Serious Image Processing for Students and Practitioners
This volume covers the waterfront of image processing from a reasonable introductory level. Refreshingly, it is much more than a cookbook. The authors pay attention to the physical principles that imaging and image manipulation are based on. With many quality images and examples, there is much for the less mathematically inclined to cut their teeth on while brushing up on their advanced math skills. The inclusion of many well chosen problems makes the book a valuable volume in a student's library. The book's associated web-site is a major bonus for the reader. I did find that some of the figure captions were challenging to interpret but the problem does not seem pervasive. Overall, I liked the book. It is a valuable addition to the image processing literature and to the image processing textbook selection.

A non-commonly found textbook on Digital Image Processing
I've been a senior researcher in Image Processing for more than 20 years, and my opinion of the book Digital Image Processing of Gonzalez and Woods, is that it is significantly superior to current books on image processing. The contents of the books are in the mainstream of work in this field, and the level of coverage is complete and written at a level that makes it an ideal textbook for seniors and first-year graduate students. The experience of the authors shows through in the way the material is presented and illustrated. The complementary web site is an outstanding teaching aid.

A very good textbook
As a computer engineering senior with a strong interest in image processing and vision, I found this book very helpful.

The exemples are varied and interesting, the maths are easy to understand and the design is very clear. Obviously, it supposes the reader has some mathematical background, but nothing impossible for an undergraduate student.

It is also very complete: it goes from very basic image processing concepts (defining pixels, the RGB format) to more complex topics like pattern recognition and wavelet compression.

not as I expected.
By looking at the book cover, I thought that it would have lots of nude pictures, etc. And from the book title, I assumed this is a picture book about those models having fun after dark. But in reality, it is just a book of different male models in different poses. It only has a few nude pictures. Nothing too exciting, I think.

contrived
what a disappointment. mostly cliched and contrived images that lack emotional and visual impact. what should be provocative images come across as awkward and rehearsed. for the real thing, check out testino!

Yum!
"Fun ? Game: Male Models After Dark is a fascinating blend of the sexual and the silly, the enticing and the amusing: it's a collection of snaps taken by the uni-named fashion photog Lalli while casting for Calvin Klein; the bodies are mostly sheathed in slight briefs or lightly-draped shirts, and it's not a fount of full-frontal. But it is a colorful eyeful of good-looking goofs, a reminder that models have personalities. - review excerpt from RL at A Different Light Books

HOAX, this book is a fake, don't buy it!
The Book of Jasher was in fact a real book, but it has been lost for over 2500 years. It is mentioned twice in the Old Testament, in Joshua and in Samuel---it is a book that recorded great victories of the Jews. This book that is sold now is simply a hoax, made up by some fools who want to get some easy money from uneducated people.

The Book of Jasher
Having my Masters in Scripture, I was wondering why I did not know that this book existed since it was mentioned in the Old Testament and I had learned that it was a lost book of antiquity. To say the least I was suspicious when I got this book as a gift. I was right to be suspicious because it is not authentic. It is a forged work of the late 1700s or early 1800s - (even an internet search will point this out). It may be amusing but just remember that it is not based in any real historical work.

Get the right one
Make sure you get the right copy of the Book of Jasher as there are several different ones out there. The one I reviewed and recommended is orange and translated in 1840. The title is "The Book of Jasher referred to in Joshua and Second Samuel" and is published by Artisan Publishers. There is another version out there that has was first published in London and is a completely different book.

An excellent book!!!
This novel makes Paul Omeziri one of my favorite authors. He shows himself through the pages of this book to be one of the most skilled writers around. I couldn't put it down, it was that interesting. I have read many stories before, different genres and different styles, but I feel this is one of the most compelling. His ability to blend thought and plot is what I liked the most.

Well Written.
Descent is the first Novel I have read by this author. However I find it indicitive of his talent. His writing is superb. This is not only a great book for anyone who likes literature, but also good for anyone interested in life. Definately for the intelligent reader. The central character in Omeziri's Novel becomes an immortal evertman witnessing events fold around him. The story begins when the characyer is a child and continues until he is an adult. Thoughout the novel Omeziri does an excellent job at describing what the thinking of a character like this one would be like. The character's love of humanity and fear of humanity really comes through throughout.

The River of Time
This novel is about modern society's ills. The modern world is individualistic and materialistic. We live lives isolated from one another. We are surrounded on all sides, but by strangers. Hegel characterised the emergence of this form of life as emerging after the enlightenment, of a humanity that could only acknowledge the finate and empirical. Kiekegaard lamented the breaking of all the bonds that held man together. This novel provides the same picture, of the emergence of a new way of looking at the world that replaced God with man and heaven with earth. The main character Nick struggles throughout to break the isolating wall between him and other human beings, but finds himself more alone, more distanced from the world around him. He battles to see something in the world that is more than bleak nothingness and is distraught when he can see nothing beyond the bleak veil of materialism. But in the end we are offered hope, a glimpse into a possible new beginning where it all ends. The novel is also about childhood as a period of refuge before entering the harrowing world of adult life. And sometimes we long to be a child again, to be back in the womb of innocence. Ultimately time like a river takes us away from the past against our will, and we find ourselves hurdling towards a future that we do not fully understand. Such are the perils of the human condition. This novel was I think the best novel I've ever read, though I realise it may not appeal to all. It nevertheless is a stunning literary achievment. It is a lot like Michael Crichton "Sphere" in that it explores the same theme of mystery and the power of thought over reality.

Gonzo exposed
I became a Hunter S Thompson fan early on. It was high school when I was in my more radical, experimental phase. Reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a whirlwind event. I had never encountered anything like it before. It was a bit more than my teenage mind could handle. HST immediately shot up the ranks of my favorite authors. He was explosive and also more accessible than the beats. There was always a sense of awe whenever the name of Hunter Thompson was invoked. The blend of journalism with fiction was a unique blend. It also seemed at times to hit on the truth more accurately than a lot of serious journalism. But before I go off about HST, let me get back to the bio at hand. This is not an authorized biography but I feel that it does shed some light on Thompson. It would seem that perhaps Thompson is receiving a bit of his own medicine here. Perry does give us some information on Thompson's childhood. He also gets into the early years of Thompson's career before the legend of Gonzo was born. This does help explain the development of this hick from Kentucky into a world renown icon of gonzo journalism. I would grant that a more definitive bio of HST could be written. There are others that I have yet to read. I was happy to get the info this book offers. I should tide me over until I read those books. HST is a fascinating figure in 20th Century America. This book is one piece to help solve the puzzle.

Awesome Perspective
This is an excellent book, one that I am glad is not written in the gonzo style.

Hunter's life is dissected and examined by Perry, who did a thoughtful and insightful work.

If you want gonzo, read Hunter, he is the only one who can write that way. If you want to read about gonzo and the mind behind it, this is your read.

A must read for a fan of Thompson!
It is impossible to read anything ever written by Thompson without being intrigued about who this guy is and if he is for real. This book answers many of questions regarding his history as well as his interactions with those around him. It is a very well wrought and researched piece about a very interesting subject.

Some reviewers are criticizing
I am confused by some of the reviews. Many seem to think that their not agreeing with a philosophy is grounds to say that you should not read this book. I find that rather upsetting. I would not say that the Bible is a bad book just because I don't believe in god. Unfortunatly, now that I have said this, the same type of people who wrote the reviews I speak of will give me bad ratings because they do not agree with what I say, not based on the content of my review.
The bottom line is, if you are interested in learning more about Humanism, whether to defend or attack it, this is the book for you, it gives a good summary of the Humanist view of things, in a short and to the point pamphlet. But when you are reading, please remember, just because you do not agree with me is no reason to insult my character, and it is same with this book.

A Thought Provoking Proposal
This is a small but thought provoking book that deserves wider attention than it will undoubtedly get.

Humanist Manifesto is a summary of a humanist based ethical system that could be used to guide our actions in putting our species into a more peaceful and just course of action. Kurtz' organizes the principle clearly and they are compelling. Little argument is marshalled, wisely leaving the reader to figure out how it could be implemented, both in his own life and that of society as a whole. Yes, it is idealistic and envisions worldwide institutions to support improvements, but the vision is so clear and simple that the reader can actually believe that much maligned scientific naturalism could be the basis for a compelling ethical system.

Excellent for humanists who may need to be reminded that their chosen life view is a powerful tool for changing the world for the better, as well as for those who do not share that world view and need an introduction to a positive ethical framework.

Highly recommended!

not that good
Sorry, but I bought this book because I love the "if" books and I thought this would be cool too. Basically it's a pretty lame imitation of those books. Yes there are some good questions, but most of them are pretty standard. And it seems sometimes like the writers treat you like a little kid. Shoulda saved my money.

Good questions for meeting people
Excellent questions for meeting people. Some other questions books have questions that are much too intimate. This book is excellent for breaking the ice. And the questions are good for people you know already.

Tired of Making Standard Small Talk? Try These Questions!
You will find some of the most interesting personal questions you have ever read in this book. You can use the questions in several ways: to amuse yourself; to stimulate even more intriguing questions; to grow closer to those you care about; and to ask others you know less well the same questions as a way to become acquainted. As a result, you should find your dinner table conversation much enlivened! As the authors say, " . . . This book was designed to make your conversations more creative, interesting and exciting."

The questions are in no particular order, and you can browse or go through from 1-320 in numerical order.

Here are a few of my favorites (with their numerical order noted in parentheses):

(320) "If you could add any question to this book, what would it be?"

(70) "If you could change the custom of shaking hands, what would you replace it with?"

(131) "If you had to choose your own epitaph of seven words or less (besides name and dates), what would it be?"

(181) "What bit of knowledge/advice do you have that you wish you could pass on to everyone else?"

(184) "What fear do you most want to be rid of forever?"

(213) "What is something that you enjoy that is a chore for most other people?"

(215) "What world record would you most want to establish?"

(273) "What is one of the simple pleasures of life you truly enjoy?"

In a group setting (perhaps like in a parlor game), you are encouraged to give everyone 60 seconds to answer before going on to the next person, unless the people involved want more or less time. The authors suggest that if you don't know what the answer is, you should imagine what the answer might be if you knew and be as creative as possible. If you get onto a subject you love, you can just stay on it. You don't have to go on to another question.

I think these are great stallbusting questions because they can make you aware of your complacency. If there are things you love, and you are not doing them, what's wrong? The epitaph question is a good start on considering your life's purpose. Are you living it? If you have a terrible fear you want to get rid of, what are you doing about it? As I went through the questions, I saw direct or indirect attacks on over 35 stalls that drain joy and accomplishment from life.

I suspect that you will get more good out of this book if you do the more stimulating questions with someone you love. That can be a great way to draw you closer together. In a way, this can be like some of the exercises in Relationship Rescue. In that book, you are encouraged to answer the questions first for yourself, then as you think the other person will answer them. Then you compare actual results, and discuss what it all means.

Enjoy getting to know yourself and others much better! BE SURE TO ACT ON WHAT YOU LEARN!

Cape Cod Ramble
This is an excellent book about the Cape and its history.
There are lots of nuggets of interesting and original information. The book, however, suffers from its rambling and discursive format. It really is a ramble.

Cape kid liked the book despite problems
I thought that Schneider attacks this book with the best of intentions and scores on many points, specifically the history of the Naussets, Champlain's adventure on the Cape and early whaling ships (including the Essex). Where he failed was in the telling: too often he jumped from event to event in a disjointed history or re-related events in a clumsy narrative. Too skimpy to be history, too spotty to cover the entire Cape, I liked this book despite its problems because it gave me some great historical perspectives of the beaches and sea where I live.

Finally a readable book for local history
The amazing deluge of tourism each summer truly ignores the elaborate history of some of New England's most beautiful coastline. For many of us who live or travel there when time and traffic allow there is this fine book to fill in the grey areas.

Unfortunately, regional history is not as popular to most readers as a spy novel or biography. This book bounces between the author's journeys in Kayak along the islands and coastline and the chronological history of travellers and settlers to the coast. There are humorous accounts of indian encounters, misguided settlers and an all too unpleasant tale of life aboard the Mayflower. Not all as we had once been told in grammar school.

The endnotes are substantial and the book can at times seem more academic than entertaining. However, I passed this on to two friends and we have laughed and shared our favorite stories over beverages. A good book and a nice read.

Just not worth it
I had to use this book for a class and it was extremely disappointing. Don't expect Deitel to explain the code examples very well, and expect to get confused and led-on.

There is some useful scripting content, but absolutely lousy at teaching anything to someone who doesn't know it already. The book does NOT teach XHTML or XML. You will not read this book and come out with a decent understanding of XHTML or XML at all.

This book is an over-complicated tour of internet scripting. It really should have focused more on Javascript, VBScript and XHTML than anything else.

Deitel & Deitel should learn how to teach, then their books would be really good.

Internet & World Wide Web How to Program
I recently used your Programming for the Internet book and Cyber Classroom ("Internet & World Wide Web - How to Program" by Deitel, Deitel & Nieto) for a course that I took a few months ago and it was a tremendous help. I really enjoyed the tools that are employed in each course, which helps students grasp the material from several sources. I would read a section and then listen to Paul lecture on the same material. No wonder you guys are the leaders in the industry. The bar has definitely been raised, and I don't see anyone near you. Keep making those great books and material.

Understandable and Prcatical "How-To" Manual
One of very few assigned textbooks which has proven practical both inside and outside of the classroom. The authors provide numerous examples on each topic presented, and the progression of topics within the book is logical. The material is relevant to modern technologies, and this book is actually fun to work through. Where errors or difficultiesd have been found in the book or the enclosed CD, the Deitel website has been all that was necessary to fill the gaps. Hats off to Deitel!

Review of: Introduction to EM Fields
I was looking forward to using this book as a refresher course, but I am extremely disappointed in the way the book is put together. This surprises me as I have the book on Intro. to EMC and it is nothing but excellent. The problems I experienced with this book are 3 fold. 1) The authors consistently lose this reader in each and every example in grueling mathmatical calculations. I understand when studying EM the student must be adept at the mathmatical concepts, but other books seem more adept at not losing the reader in the middle of trying to teach a concept. 2) The end of the chapter problems suffer with the same problem. It seems to me you start with problems that teach the concept and then procede to more difficult ones to establish the theory firmly in the students understanding. But not this book the end of the chapter problems right away lead you into endless mathmatics and by the time you come up with the answer you are more aware of what you learned in previous math classes then the actual concept trying to be taught. 3) Finally, right off the bat some of the problems in the back of the book had the wrong answers. In any event I would suggest a first time EM student look more toward Hayt rather than this book. Once again I have been very pleased with this author in the past, but in my opinion this book fails to accomplish what it sets out to achieve.

excellent intro text
this is a great book. it is written clearly with abundance of examples and problem sets that will help you to understand this rather gruesome topic.

best thign about this book is its organization. it begins with a review of relevant topics in vector calculus then goes on to electrostatics, magnetics, electromagnetics, then various applications. topics are covered integrally so that you get a growing sense of a coherent whole as you get further into the book. its well suited for undergraduate text and for self-study alike.
