Window to a different world
Organized crime doesn't occur in Canada; that's the perception I held until I read this book. Roberts and Snider opened my eyes to a different view.

Through the one-of-a-kind experiences of Cal Broeker, the writers demonstrate that the cancerous and adaptive Canuck underworld, with its global connections, is as gripping to read about as it would be fearsome to experience.

Lays bare the heretofore murky underworld or organized crime
Collaboratively written by Paul William Roberts and Norman Snider, Smokescreen: One Man Against The Underworld is the true story Carl Broeker, an ordinary businessman who was betrayed by his partner and forced to confront a deadly, blacklist world of organized crime and illicit trafficking. Drawn into undercover work with the Secret Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Broeker found himself caught up in a deadly thrill ride of lies, deceits, crime in this compelling biographical narrative of international crime lords, illegal smuggling operations, and political corruption. Smokescreen strips away the subterfuge and lays bare the heretofore murky underworld or organized crime on both sides of the Canadian/American border.

Snowstorms Along the Northeastern Coast of the United States: 1955 To 1985 (Meteorological Monograph Series)

Amazon base price: $40.00

A book recommended by 9 out of 10 Snowmen
OK, Paul Kocin, is not the smoothest on-air personality on the Weather Channel but the boy does know his snow, especially in the Northeastern USA. Great Book for all weather geeks!

The definative record
The best single volume account of major east coast snowstorms during this timeframe. Charts and maps are clear, readable, and the analysis is succinct. The cronicaling of the evolution of these storms provide insight into the fairly small window of set-ups for SECS and provides forecasting aid for future storms.

Note that this book is aimed at serious weather followers and working mets and the focus is on how the storms formed and behaived. It is not a 'snow fan's' book of pictures and firsthand accounts of people experiencing the storms, nor is it a guidebook of how cities, DOT's, etc dealt with the storms.

Sorabji: A Critical Celebration
Published in Hardcover by Scolar Pr (December, 1992)
Author: Paul Rapoport
Amazon base price: $99.95

Admirably lays the foundation stone of a neglected creator
The scholarship on Sorabji is still in a state of infancy, yet this collection here is the first attempt at eradicating years of neglect.Sorabji had placed a ban on the public performance of his music, so this was a contributing factor to this neglect. But the music world has market designs, which doesn't help creators as recluse as Sorabji. There are focused and detailed essays here fascinating to read, almost like a time warp erased Sorabji's name from existence, only to be found now. If you are totally unfamiliar with his music, or have only heard isolated recordings, this collection will admirable fill in the blank and opaque spaces. Here you have writers who actually knew Sorabji during his lifetime, who corresponded with him, and were given reserved permission to play his work after an audition performance. If you are a pianist certainly the highlight here is Geoffrey Douglas Madge's interview with Paul Rapoport on the performing difficulties and experiences of the live performance of Opus clavicembalisticum. Wonderful how Madge discusses the timbre of different pianos he had to contend with on the threshold of a performance, as well as the sheer physical difficulty. But our minds are fixed where if something is done enough, this work in particular renders itself smaller in dimension the more one spends their time on its colossus length. Michael Habermann, who is a fine Sorabji pianist also gives a nice overview of the generative sources of the piano music, bringing his performing experiences. He discusses what represents the Sorabji sound, the source of his creations like Listz,Alkan,Busoni,Godowsky, Medtner,Rachmaninoff, Szymanowski, Reger,Delius,Mahler and Ravel.Sorabji we learn detested the classical frame as an end in and of itself, where music is almost rendered preconceived beforehand, like a cook with a recipe. Instead he wanted his music to challenge him, to allow an emotive synergism to occur almost similar to a spontaneous combustion, where the various timbres and textures of the piano would find their own emotive life.Halbermann traces the influence of these composers into the Sorabji piano language. Kenneth Derus,is a fine scholar who knew Sorabji and offers a thought piece entitled Perigraph, which is an excursion into the comprehensibility the perception of repitition, shape combinations, what constitutes change in Sorabji's music. This was a lecture which I suspect has been transformed in structure. Derus has experience in the philosophic realm which informs his piece here. More Sorabji I hope, should be thought from this perspective, giving word combination associations as point of thought. Alistar Hinton, the current Archivalist of Sorabji(and a composer) also adds wonderful reminicences of his association with Sorabji which dated back to 1969. And the editor here Paul Rapoport also includes an interview which touches the important areas, Sorabji's ethnicity, also the seldom discussed symphonic poems. What also emits itself here is Sorabji's demeanor. Most thought he was irreproacable, a stubborn opinionated man,and he was, until he heard pianists play his work at his home giving them the seal of approval for performance. There are exhaustive lists of all Sorabji's works, with performance diaries of the piano works by the growing cadre of pianists. Also letters are reproduced to the writers here to and from Sorabji as well as music examples.Sorabji worked as a music critic, and he was a fascinating writer much like his music with a high dense vocabulary of words and images.

A wonderful book about one of our most underrated composers
Just about every aspect of this very private man is captured in the incredible book. Very detailed, from his life, to his writings and compositions. One of the best books I've ever read!

This book is practical, applicable, and an easy read. It offers ways of developing and integrating one's spiritual life in and through work. The book provides helpful ideas and examples for developing integrity, purpose, courage, discipline and other faith based qualities in day to day life. I highly recommend it!

A Book with Universal Appeal
Soul Business is a book for everyone. The twelve faith-based entrepreneurial qualities should be examined in every human's life. The format of the book is reader-friendly and helps the reader to really reflect and search his/her soul no matter what type of work he/she does. One of the best "Cop" books I ever read.
If you ever wondered what it would be like to be in law enforcement this is the book for you. This is the autobiography of Paul Ragonese one of the most decorated cops in America. As a New York City Police officer, and later detective, he won the medal of valor five times and in 1986 was nominated "Cop of the Year". You may remember him as the host of the television show "Crimestoppers".

This books show you the highs an lows of being a police officer in the big apple. Once you strat reading you will not want to put the book down. When I finished it I wanted even more.

Exhilirating, I couldn't put it down..
I loved this book. I have always been interested in police work, and this book brought it all to life right in front of my eyes. P. Ragonese was a fine Officer, and all of his duties deserved to be put in such a manner, Thank you Paul for giving us a close-up look of the real world..

Excellent intro to JavaScript
In my opinion, the best "how to" book on JavaScript for someone like myself - a novice in both JavaScript and programming. I spent a fair amount of time reading online reviews and followed that by examining the books at the local bookstore. This book concluded my search for an introduction to JavaScript. If you are someone who is looking to learn this scripting language, I have no reservations in recommending this book.

Importantly, it is very well written. I have come across tech books where the author might have a tremendous amount of knowledge on the subject... but simply isn't a fluid writer, making it dry and difficult to follow. This book is well organized, the explanations are clear and easy to follow, and the writing style is not dry. The writing style also refrains from cheesy humor - a style that some might enjoy, but I find that it can get annoying.

At 896 pages it is quite comprehensive, and (to my untrained eye) appears similar to the O'Reilly Definitive Guide in this respect. (The O'Reilly is 776 ppg. and printed in a larger font) . However, "Using JavaScript" is a tutorial guide whereas the O'Reillly is not. The explanations are geared towards the novice and include simple examples of the code that can be typed in to see how it functions in the browser. The O'Reilly guide relies more on verbal explanations - which, for the beginner like myself, aren't that helpful as I can't relate the explanation to its actual working function.

The earlier chapters of this book carefully explain everything and provide easy to follow examples. The scripts become more complex as the book progresses. The included scripts cover, I assume, most of the stuff you'd need to know to add basic functionality to a web page... in this respect it acts like a cookbook such as the JavaScript Quick Start Guide. Unlike the Quick Start Guide, however, this book goes far deeper into explaining the mechanics of JavaScript and is much more useful in this regard.

Great book-apply Javascript in your web pages in a few days
This book should get anyone who understands the C programming language and HTML up and running in a few days. Do things like use Javascript to check for certain conditions, the web browser information, password protection, shopping cart and such. The book is an introduction so you don't see server side scripting, however, most pro webpages use a whole lot more technologies like DHTML,XML and there is a need for other supplementary material. Yes there is a need for a JavaScript language reference like Pure JavaScript. Anyway, I think I like it because it is well written.

Spicer and Pegler's Book-Keeping and Accounts

Spicer and Pegler's Book-Keeping and Accounts
It's is a fascinating book on accounting, especially on the part of consolidation, where the author's is direct, approachable, explicit and easy to understand. But there is hard to find a book to suit all kinds of students and needs. Say, there is not enough discussion on FRS1 Cashflow Statements. On the other hand, it would be good if the writer can issue a workbook, which he had done before, with questions set on all levels. Overall, this is a good book to keep and refer.

Thumbs Up!
Paul Gee carries on a generation of one of the best accounting titles available which was first started by Spicer and Pegler more then 90 years ago. Written in the context of UK accounting framework, this book covers all the latest introductions in the world of accounting. Recommended by most teachers due to the excellent explanation and coverage of Consolidation Accounting, Paul Gee will not disappoint you on the rest of the accounting areas. Recommended for 'Power Users'!
