This book is a must for anyone who works in this field. Remley's work is definitely one of the best publications in Anglo-Saxon studies of the past decade.

Paul Remley's scholarship in this work is characteristically brilliant. Cannot recommend it highly enough, even at the eighty-dollar ticket price.

Dr. House's book is one that should be on the shelf of every Sunday School teacher. This survey is concise, helpful, easy to read, and it remains true to Scripture. It will open the eyes of the one who has always wanted to know more about the Old Testament but was too afraid to try on their own. It leaves you wanting more, and it leaves you knowing where to find more...the Old Testament itself!

I read this book in my studies at Taylor University 7 years ago. I since have lost the book through all the moving and minimizing since then, but have now found myself in search of a book this good for a refresher. I remember how little knowledge I had before the class/book and how much more educated I was after the semester. This is a great beginning study tool and will also serve it's purpose as an outstanding refresher on some of the details you've forgotten. I'm so glad I found this again.

I bought this book when I took Dr. House's course on Old Testament Theology during my seminary studies. When I read back through the book, I hear his voice. His writing is as clear as his teaching - it is excellent. Even more excellent is this work that probes Old Testament theology from a conservative, evangelical point of view. He explains his methodology as he unfolds the historical development of the discipline. Around page 90, he enters the Scriptures at Genesis 1. He approaches the Old Testament in the Hebrew order, since that would be the order from which Jesus, the Apostles, and the early church would have read and understood it. This approach does make a difference, as the Hebrew ordering is based more on literary genre than is the Christian ordering of the books. House derives sound conclusions throughout this presentation of his field. This book helped me to put together many key themes of the Old Testament and see how they continued to work into the New Testament. An example: in Genesis 1, God is presented as the Creator. House's book helps one to see the theological arguments of Isaiah and the Psalmist(s), among others, who base their teachings, praise and prophecy on the fact that God created. Do not let the length of the book intimidate you - it is well worth the read. It is far better than any other book I have read on Old Testament Theology or Old Testament thematic study.

In a characteristically perceptive and graceful introduction, Paul Goldberger suggests that the world has caught up with the good sense and refined sensibility of this Seattle firm. This is a handsome, expansive study of a dozen houses, built for people of means and taste-a rare combination. All but two are located in the northwest, and each immerses you in the natural beauty of its site and its inner serenity. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

This book wisely does not try to show all the work of Olson Sundberg Kundig and Allen, one of the Northwest's leading architecture firms. Instead it focuses on a small number of selected homes designed by the firm, and then guides the reader through the creative process, from design through construction to finished product. What emerges is an elegant book of even more elegant homes, each quite different from the other, but all seeming to harness to the max both the power of line and the nurturing complexity of light.

Just finished this book. It was a very excellent summing up of the great one's work, and I especially enjoyed the author's personal takes and commentaries on Sartre's ideas. I really enjoyed reading it and learned a great deal even as I found my mind being refreshed with much of what I was taught years ago in courses on Existentialism. I found the writing to be quite fluid and the theses, summations, arguments and commentaries to be highly understandable and enjoyable to read. I discovered a great deal in the 'Life and Works' section that I had not known before, and the presentation of Sartre's defense of direct realism was very cogent. The author's section discussing Sartre on Nothingness was excellent, and I felt an old thrill running through me as I was re-acquainted with 'the theft of my world', 'le regard', 'shame and pride' and 'the body'. The 'Ontology' section really helped focus and clarify Sartre's ideas for me. The author's discussion of 'free will and determinism' and his presentation of Sartre's ideas on these concepts was excellent. That "the being of human beings is freedom", the concept of bad faith, Sartre on theology and ethics and humanistic Existentialism all made the blood rush to my ears. I had a lot of powerful feelings reading these wonderfully profound and moving insights again. I am quite taken with the author's final statement "Although I agree that obligation to others is central to ethics, I believe this focus needs to overlap with an ethic of self-realization. It would be a shame to lose sight of the imperative of Existentialism to confront our freedom and create ourselves." This speaks so much to us of how we should be "in the world". The author answers beautifully all those endless and careless remarks that are constantly being made by those with no knowledge of Existentialism, who use the word to infer a philosophy of despair, gloom and hopelessness. It is, as the author says, so much the opposite... what could be more stimulating, challenging, thrilling, promising and ultimately 'human' than confronting one's freedom and creating oneself? Could there be anything more important or meaningful in a human life? I want to thank the author for a wonderful book. It goes on my favorite bookshelf.

I'm no expert on Sartre, but I decided to "review" this book because I found it a throughly enjoyable, informative and well-written introduction to the best known existentialist of the 20th Century.

The book starts out with an introduction to Sartre and his place within existentialism. [pp. 1-6.] The second chapter is called "life and works" and is an excellent overview of Sartre's life which deals extensively with his literature and politics. [pp. 7-40.] The final chapters deal with Sartre's epistemology, ontology, psychology, and ethics. [pp. 41-95.] In these chapters, Prof. Kamber quotes extensively (but not excessively) from Sartre's works. The book contains equal amounts of praise and criticism and strikes me as fair and balanced. Although everything is cited, the book doesn't contain footnotes (which I find generally distract and aren't necessary in an introductory work).

I have only a couple of criticisms of this work. First, Prof. Kamber is too easy on Sartre for his support of the Soviet Union. According to Prof. Kamber, Sartre did not break ties with the Soviet Union until the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. [p. 35.] Since the crimes of the Soviet Union were well-known (such as committing genocide in the Ukraine) one would think there would be no excuse for having any ties with such a government at any time. Why Sartre decided to offer at least partial support for years to a nation that committed crimes greater than Nazi Germany's is a question worthy of some discussion. Second, the book doesn't contain a list of recommended books about Sartre.

Prof. Kamber clearly put a great deal of effort to make this book readable and informative. I recommend it highly.

I am very glad I found this paperback at the library and took a chance on it. The first novel, Fong and the Indians, concerns a hapless petty merchant in East Africa. It is delighfully politically incorrect while maintaining a sympathetic opinion of the underlying humanity of all the characters. The third, Jungle Lovers, could have been written by a heavy drinker attracted to African women, because, well, the protagonist has these characteristics. It is also well-paced and mixes politics, plot, and character quite well. I am currently reading the "second" placed novel and it is also delightfully juicy and descriptive. Overall, these books made me want to read more novels set in Africa, by Africans as well as visitors.

This is actually a compilation of three previously-published novels, set in sub-Saharan Africa. To the best of my knowledge, all three are out of print, so the publisher has done the reader a service by re-printing all three in this volume.

Each of the novels in this volume has certain merits, and all three are worth your time. As a whole, they serve to encapsulate the experience of being a foreigner in Africa, in the 1970s. By foreigner I don't just mean Caucasian; the stories are told from diverse points of view. My personal favorite is the one about a group of women running a boarding school in upcountry Uganda, but anyone who either likes the writings of Paul Theroux or has an interest in Africa, would find that all three stories are worth his while.

Like suspense, drama, the unknown. Take a trip through this book, Once Again. On the surface it is deceivingly simple but then... Wow... It pulls you in and takes you to the mysterious. Great book!!

Serving aboard the U.S.S.Eldorado in San Diego shortly before the Gulf War, Petty Officer Cheevers becomes involved in a shipboard scandal that ruins his career, endangers his marriage, and threatens his life. He's been blamed for inciting his shipmate, Seaman John Trout, into hanging himself in the ship's brig. Only Cheevers knows the real story--that Seaman Trout experienced a past life vision of dying in the battle of Waterloo nearly two centuries previously. Although Cheevers explains these details to the ship's captain in an investigation, still resulting in a demotion and his dismissal from the ship in disgrace, he withholds the key information that has shattered his perception of reality. Seaman Trout predicted Cheevers will die, too, in a trap set by fate that is impossible to escape. Cheevers learns that his life hangs in the balance of being able to circumvent destiny by proving his shipmate's prophecy wrong, and surviving the conflict that erupts in the Persian Gulf initiated by Saddam Hussein.

The clarity of the studies and writing used to explain Asia's consumer markets pre and post-meltdown, makes this book a really easy,and enjoyable read. I would recommend it to anybody who, like me, is trying to sell into the vast Asian market and needs some guidelines on the current consumer trends. I am most impressed with the authors' style as well as the thoroughly accessible lay-out and chapters headings that enable the reader to dip in and out at random. I have used this book as a resource for a number of trips and presentations that I have given in the past few months. Better than most.

I'm a frequent traveller to Hong Kong and the surrounding area, and the authors have really hit on something. South -east Asia is still in recession, but it's not a recession as we know it. It's merely slowed-down to a less frenetic pace.

My last visit to the area was in late December when I visited Hong Kong and Macau. I found this book really reflected what was going on after the 'meltdown', and is packed full of really invaluable info.

I picked up the book for the great photography of the beautiful individuals! Yet, after I got the book home, I began to read....and the enjoyment was so satisfying. Delightful tidbits of real life secrets for us all, no matter what age we are experiencing. In a society that does not honor the elderly, this book gives the reader insight into the real jewels of life we forget to honor.

Easy step by step in detail description and graphs to make a masterpiece. Anyone could master the art of opal cutting with this book. Keeps the best fire to be awed instead of in the drain pan.
