AFTER THE FIRE
AFTER THE FIRE is a collection of essays that are compiled by a gifted writer. "The Blind World" is one essay worth the price of the book. Mr. Zimmer was a "guinea-pig" GI during the Atomic Bomb tests in Nevada,in the mid-1950's. He writes that when he covered his eyes with his hands, his hands became an x-ray because his company was so close to the fiery blast of the bomb. That one chapter would make one great movie.

But Mr. Zimmer also writes with insight and passion about his many loves, including his wife Suzanne, and his first-hand experiences with great jazz musicians, including Lester Young, Art Tatum, Thelonius Monk and Sarah Vaughn. Zimmer writes, "They even stuffed whole bands--Basie, Kenton, Herman--onto those small stages." That essay, "Young Jazz" is one of the best pieces written about American music this side of Down Beat.

We also learn that Paul Zimmer has had a long literary career as editor and director of several publishing houses, where he introduced numerous writers, including Gary Gildner, Richard Shelton, Gary Soto, Norman Dubie, Jack Anderson, and Bin Ramke, to the literary world.

This is a finely honed, remarkably insightful and humane collection of essays. I thought I would read one essay, put the book aside and savor it, but found myself reading the entire book in one sitting.

Excellent, insightful
This book is an excellent insight to how tactics of major interest groups reacted to, benefited, or were derailed by the 1994 Republican take over of Congress. It is written extremely well with captivating stories, individualizing each interest group within its own chapter. A must-read for any Political Science major or government buff. Five stars!

beautiful look at Christian spirituality thru history
As co-translator of this book, an Evdokimov scholar and Orthodox priest, it's a joy to share the insight of this lay theologian of our time. This is a challenging, rich journey through our century's crisis of faith,Christian spirituality's development, especially monasticism's gifts, and how authentic spiritual life can be lived today.

Agesilaos and the Crisis of Sparta
Published in Paperback by Gerald Duckworth & Co. Ltd (29 September, 2000)
Author: Paul Cartledge
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A scholars masterpiece
This book contains probably every known fact about the legendary Spartan king. Numerous references are being made to other writers and many different approaches are used to create an impression of the importance of the king in his own lifetime as well as his relevance to the later military and social developments. The maps provided though, are few and slightly below standards.

The Agrarian Roots of Pragmatism (Vanderbilt Library of American Philosophy)
Published in Hardcover by Vanderbilt Univ Pr (November, 2000)
Authors: Paul B. Thompson and Thomas C. Hilde
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

A great contribution to pragmatist and agrarianist thought
The Agrarian Roots of Pragmatism gathers some of the best minds in American philosophy around a single theme: the relationship between pragmatism and agrarianism. The first half provides an excellent introduction to agrarian thought, its history, and its contemporary (and possibly future) relevance. The second, assuming a greater familiarity with the pragmatic tradition, limns the relationship between agrarian philosophy and pragmatism, often using one to advance or bring criticism to bear on the other. The result is remarkable, for the reader not only puts down this book with a better understanding of the roots of pragmatism and its historically contingent relation to agrarianism, but also with an exciting sense of how both of these traditions may be developed in the future. Those unfamiliar with pragmatism and agrarianism get a great introduction; those who already think of themselves as pragmatists, like myself, will find much they didn't know.

Air Pollution Control and Design Handbook

This comprehensive book examines all clean air technology.
The work is a little dated; however, the technology in theory has not changed in decades. I would recommend this book to anyone who practices in the environmental engineering field.

Air to Air: Warbirds
Published in Hardcover by North Shore Press (KS) (October, 2002)
Author: Paul Bowen
Amazon base price: $70.00
Average review score:

Air to Air is Awesome
Aerial photographer Paul Bowen knows the stuff that dreams are made of, at least, for pilots and aerial enthusiasts, that is. His newest book, Air to Air Warbirds is a tribute to the aircraft of many different military regimes and the men and women who flew them, then, and who work tirelessly to keep them flying in exhibitions and air shows around the world today.

The book is a 224 page coffee-table hardback with more than 500 high-quality photographs, most taken by Bowen from his favorite perch, in the tailgunner position on a specially rigged B-25 (there's a picture of that, too, in case you are wondering how he does it).

Bowen's photographs have graced the magazine covers of some of the most prominent aviation publications in the world for more than 30 years. This book is just a sampling, and I'm betting, if you buy it, not long from now, you'll be looking for more.

Alaska's Copper River Delta
This book is filled with ecological, geological and historical information. The work is superbly written to be enjoyed and understood by all readers. The artwork presented within the book is reason enough to own the book. Add to this the fact that you are supporting a great cause and probably gaining information you have never thought about before and you have a real winner. I am still amazed at the way Riki manages to get the names(sometimes in Latin)of all the flora and fauna included in the text while still maintaining the reader's interest.
