You can derive pleasure and profit from other books on Richard Strauss, notably Michael Kennedy's (my review of Kennedy's latest Strauss tome is already on Amazon.com) and Norman Del Mar's; but nobody can claim to know Strauss the human being who has not read Kurt Wilhelm's magisterial account. Wilhelm brings the day-to-day behaviour of Strauss and his family to life, in a way that no previous biographer -- however diligent -- has managed to do. You finish this production feeling as if you have met the man. Wilhelm appears to have been given the run of Strauss-related archives at Garmisch, Bavaria, which earlier chroniclers either couldn't or simply didn't use. Old enough to have corresponded with Strauss in person, Wilhelm (who spent part of the Nazi period in jail) is neither oppressively autobiographical nor mindlessly sycophantic: just quizzical, fair-minded, and courageous in his judgements. I don't imagine Strauss himself would have wanted any other sort of tribute.

I can't think of any other book that could have so brilliantly told a real story about autism in the family...in such an imaginative and poignant way. Until you've seen and read this book, it is difficult to comprehend that the searing edge of storytelling could be by means of the duality of child/adult personal recollections -- combined with original graphic-novel illustration. To bring this kind of imagination to this important, elusive topic of our time is a truly miraculous achievement. There is a lot of pain and a lot of joy of family strength, and you really don't feel that marzipan coating that might have gotten in the way.

What a beautiful, amazing book...I sat down to read it and found myself finishing it all in an afternoon, something I rarely do. I'm not an activist, but I must say I have spent time trying to tell friends about this book. I'll probably be giving a number of copies as gifts. Somehow, I hope this book receives a much wider audience so that people might see and understand the power and value of writing (and drawing) about something REAL in a society which seems so consumed with pop topics and lavish, vacant overproduced books that never get read or are rarely worth saving, passing on to others.

In Rievaulx Abbey, the authors have given us a splendid portrayal of life in the Cistercian monastery. The personages of Aelred and Walter Daniel truly come alive in this work. In addition to the historical perspective of the book, we are given insight into the methods of architectural historians and come away with a better understanding of how great historical buildings are interpreted. The prose of Fergusson and Harrison is awe-inspiring. This book is a must-have for the student of monastic architecture.

Only Don Paul could write such a book. It's really fantastic. From the first page, you get info from a real pro, former Green Beret Don Paul. As a combat veteran and former officer, I can tell you that no other book on rifles is as good, complete, easy to read and understand and, above else, clear. And it's inexpensive! What more a really good book can be? Buy it ASAP is my advise.

In a world that unemployment is the great fear of all of us, think about the right to be lazy may seems senseless, but it's not. Written in the 19'th century, Lafargue's book is a claim for individual liberty of our ill society, that is a system created to stole all of our free time by slavering our minds in an compulsive obsession of being productive. It's a good book to think about this great anathema of our time: the eternal need to show our disposition to work to be socially accept.

This pamphlet bears a humerous name, but is a serious arguement for the eight hour day and the 40 hour work week. It was written in 1883 while the author was in prison and at a time when business leaders around the world were absolutely opposed to any shortening of the work week or the working day.

It is a short and easy read and adds much to the readers understanding of the late nineteenth century.

Make no mistake - the "Boston Massacre" and "Boston Tea Party", while celebrated milestones on the road to Independence, were riots. Rioting has been a popular mode of expression for the common man from the beginning, and no doubt will continue to be.
Gilje carefully traces the phenomenon from our earliest roots to the present, finding four broad historical phases, with differing causes and, perhaps most importantly, differing levels of violence. The fourth, or latest, stage has been characterised by relatively mild violence - until recently.
Admirably researched and very well written, Gilje's work is a welcome light into a dark corner of American life. Highly recommended.
