The Photographic Atlas of the Stars

A new perspective on star atlases
There are no errors in the plotting of any of the objects shown in this star atlas. Why? Because all the maps are photographs! Each map consists of an unmarked photograph, a black and white copy of the photograph marked with star names and other useful landmarks, and a text description of many of the interesting objects on the map.

The authors have made a supreme and largely successful effort to calibrate the colors and scale to match human perception of the night sky. A few notable nebulae and stars appear different in the atlas than what we would actually see due to the differing sensitivities of film and human eyes to certain wavelengths of light. Also, the limiting magnitude of the maps correlates closely with what binoculars can see, not what the human eye can see. Consequently, sometimes the sheer overload of stars and objects visible on the map can be confusing.

All 88 constellations are covered, some on several photographs. Because each map covers such a large area of the sky, many of the deep sky objects noted in the text are difficult to pick out. Also, it seems that for some maps the text was written for earlier or later exposures than what was actually published. This is evident after looking for variable stars mentioned as "bright" in the text that are not even present on the photograph!

Overall, a great work but no substitute for a "real" star atlas like Sky Atlas 2000. A bit expensive for its usefulness, but obviously a labor of love for the authors and great for casual naked-eye or binocular stargazing.

GREAT ATLAS BUT ONE GLARING IMPERFECTION.
The book is generally awesome. The entire sky is photographeddown to 8th magnitude (meaning you need binoculars to see them all inthe sky) stars. Typically each full-page photo has three back-up pages including narrative and a corresponding chart which identifies all the interesting objects. Now here's where the book is frustrating: Pages 14 through 19 contain ultra wide angle photos which together DO NOT cover the entire sky. Also, these ultra wide angle photos are miniaturized and don't get the same treatment as the photos in the rest of the book. The result is a beautiful book that shows a lot of "trees", elating amateur astronomers, but which does not show "the forest". Beginner astronomers who want to quickly, photographically see the relative positions of constellations must turn elsewhere.

Excellent Field Guide
This is a pocket size field guide. Don't expect a big or even medium size book. But for its small size it has much value as a traveler's guide. If you plan to go hiking or explore an exotic destination like Thailand, this book can be very important. We tend to forget that snakes are more common in other parts of the world. A field guide with many color photographs of snakes (in particular), lizards, and turtles can be very helpful in identifying which are venemous and dangerous. All photographs are accompanied by a brief description. Furthermore, it was made small specifically for explorers and field researchers. You will not have to carry many large books on the field. Even if you are just into reptiles, this book is a great buy because it is one of the few to touch this area of the world.

Snakes and other reptiles of southeast Asia is truly unique!
This book is a great book for a variety of reasons. Most of the pictures are good and the text is generally accurate. The reason I like this book is because Asia is so poorly researched and the wildlife, especially herps, is poorly studied and published. In general, this book provides a small glimpse to this great and undiscovered area of the world. Now, if only the amphibians were shown!

Too wordy
This book of Paul Hiemenz' could have been almost halved without detriment to its content. I would not point this out if the language were engaging, but it is not.

Review of Hiemenz "Polymer Chemistry"
Classic text on polymer chemistry. Professors usually teach directly out of this book, and are excited to discover that it is back in print. Though "Polymer Chemistry" has not been updated since 1984, by no means is it outdated. Intended for senior-level undergraduate or beginning graduate level, this text covers introductory terminology, basic chain dynamics, basic rheological characterization, crystallization, thermodynamics of the glassy state, synthesis, reaction kinetics, and solution thermodynamics.

This book is written from the chemist's perspective and meant as an introduction. Chemists wishing to specialize in the organic synthesis aspect may also benefit from "Principles of Polymerization" by Odian. Materials engineers would likewise turn to a polymer physics text and keep Hiemenz as a reference.

While this book is indispensible as a student text, its format isn't conducive to leisurely reading. A professional wishing to brush-up on skills may benefit from other texts.

Day-by-day sermon schedule
The best feature of Wilson's book is the section in which he provides helpful tools and exercises for each day in a weekly process of sermon composition. Beware of reading a chapter a day as you go through the process, as the last "day" in the process encompasses the final five chapters of the book! Beginning preachers see also Haddon Robinson's Biblical Preaching and Michael Duduit's Handbook of Contemporary Preaching.

An excellent heuristic tool.
A fine book for novice and even experienced preachers. Wilson gives an overview of the history, theory and theology of preaching to the present. He then proceeds to outline a "weekly" process for sermon development. At times, he runs on a bit with unnecesary deatil - especially when surveying present trends in exigesis - but in all, a good tool for those confronted with the weekly or more occasional task of sermon-crafting.

An ok novel of a good movie
Predator was an excellent movie. Taking what could have been an any day average action sci-fi movie and turning it into an A rate. Unfortunately, the novel does not keep up it's end of the deal. Novelizations are generally supposed to expand on the movie. Going into what the movie cannot explain and answering questions that the movie cannot show. The predator in the book and the predator in the movie are very different. The predator in the book can change shape, control animals, and see from the eyes of any creature it chooses. The book also has much more profanity than the movie, takes all of the humorous one liners from the movie and changes them into weak, boring one liners, and changes the main character Dutch from a cool, hard core guy into a mean, uncaring, almost evil hard core guy that no one really likes. I think it could have been done much better. If you like the movie, you can read the book just to see the differences from the movie, but it's not going to add much new to the experience.

A near perfect top notch sci fi masterpiece.
A much more engrossing and captivating story than that contained in the movie of the same name, Predator tells the story of an elite military rescue unit sent into the jungles of South America to rescue American hostages.

After a thrilling and bloody firefight at the enemy base, the men begin their long trip to the helicopter rendevous point. Along the way, they are hunted and killed, one by one, by an unseen creature that uses the jungle to hide. Finally, only one man remains, left to hunt the hunter and free the earth from it's carnage.

The book maintains a nearly impossible breakneck speed from start to finish. Not only is this a finely crafted science fiction story, but it is also a glorious Rambo-style novel full of big guns and even bigger battles. A great and wholly satisfying read.

A Real Princess
PLEASE NOTE! This review is for the version that is illustrated by Dorothee Duntze. Everyone knows this Hans Christian Andersen story about the bedraggled princess who shows up looking for shelter on a stormy night. She might be a good match for the prince who's been searching for a "real" princess so the queen mother runs a little test...the rest is the subject of fairy tales! This version is simply told and beautifully illustrated. The pictures, executed in soft pastel colors, have a quirky Art Deco feel to them that I thoroughly enjoyed. The gowns of all the ladies in the book are done in a collage style and are covered in intricate patterns and designs. Lovely...the real thing!

an amusing modern twist to an old tale!
In the beautiful land of Upper-Crestalia King Adolph, Queen Frieda, & their dear son Prince Ralph live & the queen is quite content until her son one day bursts into her chamber & declares that he wishes to marry.

The queen does not like this idea at all so she hatches a plan to prevent her son marrying & she makes sure that the few princesses who do audition for Prince Ralph's wife all fail.

Mad with grief, Prince Ralph tears off in his expensive car down to Lower-Crestalia & when smoke starts billowing out of his hood, poor Ralph is stranded.

To his great surprise & relief, an auto-mechanic pulls up next to him & a dirty young woman in overalls carrying a tool box, jumps out. They get to talking, & the Prince is smitten! Her name is Opal, & she is the princess of Lower-Crestalia.

On the spot Prince Ralph proposes & when her prince charming confesses that his mother has idiotic tasks in store for her, Opal only becomes more determined.

Opal passes the tests with flying colors & that's when the queen insists there be a third test which is the one from which the title of this hilarious book is taken.

Will Princess Opal pass the final test? Will the queen's crafty plan succeed? Read this enchanting book & find out!

very informative book for an advanced cook
we found this book to be very instructive towards developing a buffet for a large amount of people. It is a book geared towards professional chefs. a majority of the recipes are the basics required to create a standard buffet. the more advanced chef will use these as a guide for more inventive dishes.

At least its a start
Finally a book that tries to educate American cooks about the fabulous art of french garde manger cooking. Alas, it is best used by those who have advanced cooking skills as it presents ideas, more than formal instruction. Many of these dishes are difficult, and there are no directions, illustrations or tips on how to give these dishes the finished look they deserve
