Good Sight Seeing Guide for Rocky Mountain Area Travel
This is a good sightseeing guide that should help anyone who is interested in traveling the Rocky Mountain States by car.

Arranged by state, the book highlights different attractions in each area. It also suggests driving loops, designed to hi-light the highlights while traveling a circular route along major highways. This is certainly designed well for someone who is unfamiliar with the area and wants a travel itinerary laid out with suggested sights and attractions.

Accommodations or restraints are not listed, so one would have to look to another guide or the internet for those. This book can get you started with your destinations, however.

Lots of insight, too few images
I bought this book expecting a sort of National Geographic pictorial - and therefore a lot of landscape shots of the Rockies. I was dissapointed.

Though the book is well put together and the photographs are decent, this is not a good book to get if you're looking for photographic examples of the rockies.

If you're looking for the story behind the rockies, 5 stars. If you're looking for pictures, 3 stars (at most).

Good, but not great selection of essays.
In light of recent documentary discoveries in a number of European archives, I had high hopes that this volume would further the body of research into the Rosicrucian movement. Ultimately, it did, but in ways I did not anticipate.

There are some essential works here (Joscelyn Godwin's excellent meditation on Michael Maier and Rafael T. Prinke's article on Michael Sendivogius immediately spring to mind: both of which demonstrate the varities of meaning Rosicrucianism took on to those who sought to perpetuate the movement in different contexts) but also much filler. Too many of the contributions collected in this volume re-state a body of knowledge familiar to all students of the subject. Due to the original format of these contributions (i.e., speeches) this knowledge is -understandably- not communicated in a particularly useful fashion.

Having said that, this volume is worth its price of entry. However the content is certainly a mixed bag.
Lastly, the translations of the Rosicrucian manifestos contained in this volume are those of Thomas Vaughan's mid 17th century edition of the Fama and Confessio .

Enlightenment is eye opening
Before the 'New Age' there was the "Rosicrucian Enlightenment". At the beginning of the 17th century, a new awakening was heralded throughout Europe, announcing the universal reform of all known areas of human activity - religion, science, art, and society were to become one being. The chief proponents of this great awakening were the mysterious "Rosicrucians". Nearly 400 years after the first seeds of this movement were planted, over 100 students, authors, and scholars of traditional Western esotericism, of which Rosicrucianism is the foremost exponent, gathered in the medieval town of Czesky Krumolv in the Czech Republic, to discuss, explore, and in someway, reopen the 'Vault of Christian Rosencreutz' once again.

"The Rosicrucian Enlightenment Revisited" contains nine essays on the early Rosicrucian movement presented at this landmark conference sponsored in part by The New York Open Center, and copies of the first two Rosicrucian Manifestoes, the "Fama" and the "Confessio". It is a great read and ideal for anyone interested in what is truly the heart and soul of Western esotericism - the Rosicrucian Enlightenment.

A Great Collection This is Not
This book is not one of the best among those in the Dover Art Library. A handful (about a half-dozen) of pictures are good with sufficient details and/or a tight organization to be appreciated. Most are so-so. Some are definitely fillers. It does not help that Rubens himself, according to the Publisher's Note, did not think highly of his own drawings and did not even sign a single one of them. All told, this selection is not impressive.

Rubens's paintings, rather than his drawings, should rightly be his legacy.

excellent
This is an excellent book on the drawings of Rubens. The works are very diverse and a whole range of different media are used. This is a great book to study for an art student.

The Scream Museum
Published in Audio Cassette by Recorded Books (November, 2002)
Author: Paul Zindel

Good Story, Poor Logic
Zindel does not meet his usual quality of writing in this book. In the first chapter, P.C. says that his father left town yesterday, then says that his father's been out of town for a week. I also doubt that P.C., a high school junior, would have Jesus, a 13-year-old computer wiz, for a best friend. And the relationship with Jesus seems to be for P.C.'s benefit primarily. I will warn my junior high students that this book is not as good as others by Paul Zindel before they read it. I don't know whether I will invest in the rest of the series for my classroom library or not. The story was entertaining, but I feel that Zindel did not take the time to think carefully during the writing process. Take your time, Paul - you have great ideas to get kids reading!

The first book in a great new mystery series.
P.C. Hawke wants to be a professional detective when he grows up. His dad works at the Museum of Natural History in New York City, P.C. and his best friend, Mackenzie, have already helped solve one crime. When the chief biologist at the museum is murdered, P.C. and Mackenzie's friend Tom, a custodian who wouldn't hurt a fly, is apparently caught red-handed, they know he's been set up. They suspect that it may be either Mirsky or Congers, the two museum employees now fighting over the suddenly open position. P.C. and Mackenzie are determined to clear Tom's name by finding the real killer. But in the process, they uncover a web of deception that may put their own lives in danger. The first book in this new mystery series is full of thrills, chills, and more. I highly reccomend it.

Part History, Part Essay
Perhaps the most relevant thing I can say about this book is that it is now on a short list of books I recommend when people ask me what they need to read in order to understand racism in America.

That said, I'll explain why I recommend it:

First, most books that teach something about racism in America fall into one of two categories: 1) History books, 2) Contemporary commentaries. This book is actually a hybrid: In the early chapters it is a history. Later on it uses that history to construct a commentary. Because most contemporary commentaries lack a solid historical grounding, this is one of the book's primary strengths. One cannot, I maintain, understand racism, without understanding its history.

Second, in writing the "history" portion of the book Paul Griffin liberally uses one of my favorite historical devices. Rather than simply telling us the history in his own words, he faithfully reproduces the actual words written or uttered at the time, and let's those words speak for themselves. If only for the value of the quotes assembled, this book is well worth its price.

Third, at less than 150 pages, this book is easy to digest. Because I surmise that most people never finish the books they start to read (particularly non-fiction), this is one book that folks can actually start - and finish.

That said, I think there are a few caveats to keep in mind. Racism is a mighty-tangled bush that did not sprout from a single seed. In that sense, this book is not an entirely comprehensive analysis of all the root causes of racism in America (as perhaps its title would suggest). As an example, there is not much said about how capitalist ideology contributed to the establishment and entrenchment of racism. To his credit, however, Paul Griffin deftly handles two important seeds: theology and science, with a primary emphasis on the former. Hence, this book will be most relevant to those who are interested in knowing how theology -- bad theology in particular -- played a pivotal role in the expansion of racist constructs in America. Toward that end, it offers a depth of analysis I have yet to find elsewhere.

Finally, apart from his obvious interest in theology, Paul Griffin is also obviously interested in the modern intersection of sexism and racism, which is where he ultimately takes this work. The final chapter, "White Feminism and the Black Quest for Racial Justice," shows again that there is a relatively narrow prism guiding the book's contemporary discussion. While that is not a problem per se, the reader should be aware that his final analysis is not a comprehensive look at how racism plays out in America today. Rather, it is a more concentrated look at some of the particular ways that certain forms of racist ideology have been reincarnated, especially in "liberal" circles.

All in all, I recommend this book to any serious student of racism in America. (....)

Review of "Seeds of Racism"
Paul has courageously provided an evocative thought and stimulated conversation at a place where heretofore has been limited, especially as it relates to racism in America. He systematically traces and shows the influence of the periods of Awakening and Enlightenment on the institution of slavery and, especially its impact in colonial America. The "seeds of Racism" provides additional literature that expands and challenges many traditional thoughts and assumptions that slavery was created and nutured by the agricultural south. Additionally, this text presents an interesting analysis of how white liberals, feminists, and the multi-cultural focus has impacted this issue.

A Self-Made Man: The Diary of a Man Born in a Woman's Body

The book that makes dreams come true!!!
A Self Made Man was a very well written book.
The emotion that was there was fabulous, it was funny, interesting & sad but most of all, for me it was heart warming.

The book gives a very good account of a day to day life of a female to male transsexual, the ups and downs.
The best thing i found was that Paul was really honest and didn't hide the not so good parts of being an FTM.

I would say that the only thing missing from this book was some finer detail....How did he choose the name Paul? Who did he first go to in a medical capacity for help? Were they any good? How long from that point did it take to start testosterone?
I think in a book of this nature the whole point is to try to help others in that situation, which it does, however as i have detailed, i don't think there was enough info about the lead up to starting testosterone.

Paul Hewitts, A Self Made Man gave me the courage to believe that it was time that the little boy that had been inside me for 28 years should come out and breathe for the first time.

So, come on Paul, whats been happening since then? It's time for another!!!!

Not just a pretty face
This book was as inspirering as it confronts the transition between women and women. Paul Hewitt writes a very honest and from the heart account of his early life, his loves and the steps which led him to change his gender, and fulfill what he ahd always beleived himself to be. I read this book as recommended by a friend, this book is very importnat to the FTM transsexual community it has been ground breaking in the way Paul has addressed differcult issues.

I would highly recommend this book for anybody who needs advice and additude from a very confident writer and person.

The book fills my world with hope and admiration every time I read it.

The only way that I would improve this book would be to MAKE IT LONGER. And Paul if you are reading this it would great to see and read a follow up, perhaps telling the stories of how you see yourself in 10 years, your surgery and of course the neverending stream of women in your life.

Paul is a credit to the male community and may he and his fellow FTM's live in peace and happiness. I admire him greatly for putting his feelings on paper. Thanks Paul

OK book, but more for troubled marriages
I had hoped that this book would be more like "Intended for Pleasure," but it is more about case studies of troubles marriages and how negative emotions can affect the sex life in a Christian marriage. It's less of a manual, and more self-help.

Truly Becoming One
Problems in the bedroom? Never fear. *** BEGIN HERE*** Whatever you do, please don't go $pending thou$and$ of dollar$ on marriage counseling (like me) BEFORE you check out this handly little "how to" book written by the experts. Sex in the Christian Marriage is an excellent resource for any Christian couple interested in achieving the true spiritual oneness that God intended marriage to be. New and old Christians (even the really old ones) will benefit from the anatomical and practical information regarding the differences in the sexes. The content has a distinctly straightforward medical spin and lays out the kind of information you would expect to get in a good premarital sex education class or at a marriage seminar, but you probably won't because most people are not willing to teach others the detailed educational info you will find in this book. Plus, the M.D.'s are shrinks and at least one of them is bolder than the average shrink.

Since lack of knowledge may be a hindrance to some couples I'd recommend reading it just to be on the safe side and to be certain both mates have the same intentions and are fully committed to a healthy biblical oneness in marriage. Authored by two Christian M.D.'s and ex-pastor, Richard Meier, now a Marriage and Family Therapist practicing at the Paul Meier New Life Outpatient Clinic in Richardson, Texas, along with his wife, Lorraine, they've utilized many years of counseling experience to provide sound medical knowledge on a variety of disorders and encouragement through case studies with some very happy endings. Those who did not live happily ever after, however, have not been included. If you have a resistant spouse, don't waste another moment waiting for them to see things your way, read this book and make practical applications in your personal behavior which will affect your marriage. God will sort things out. You may find your spouse pleasantly surprised when you take the initiative to spice things up a bit. Locate the local candle shops, bath and body shops, Christian music store and pick up a new nightie or two while you're busy filling up that shopping cart.

This book is a MUST for all couples with young children in the home. The Enemy likes to attack young fathers while young mothers are busy focusing on the needs of small children. Men are often working longer hours in order for their wives to stay home with young ones and men face many temptations in the workplace. Every father of preschoolers ought to carry a copy of this book in his briefcase for some light reading at lunchtime. Some men may need to carry it in their front shirt pocket as a reminder or as a badge of marriage. (Great stocking stuffer too, the book is just the right size for your love's Christmas stocking!) Some men may get fresh ideas after reading this book and realize that women would prefer their time and attention versus material items.

Those dabbling in cyberporn or who think just one visit to Hooters or the Cafe Risque' for lunch won't hurt anything are deceived. (It's much like Lays Potato Chips, it's impossible to stop after just one visit to the chip & dip bowl but those thin chips deceive the eye and when you take a look in the mirror the results begin to affect you sooner than you think). Any married man who is surfing the net in his spare time looking for pornsites or exploring the Sports Illustrated swimsuit video should seriously be focusing that attention upon his wife INSTEAD, that is, if he doesn't want to be the Enemy's next target. It can happen to you. You don't know what you have until you've lost it. Consider this paperback to be preventive medicine. I recommend this great little guide book wholeheartedly to all newlyweds and oldyweds alike. It's certain to motivate you to celebrate with your very best friend the marriage God blessed you with and to assist you in achieving true oneness as God intended. Submitted by V.L. Wight

Essays of an Ex-Lefty Hammering His Old Ideological Brethren
To be honest, I'm not sure exactly why the title for this book was chosen. A more appropriate title would have been "A Collection of Essays by David Horowitz." There are some essays that allude to Clinton's sex, lies, and conspiracies but this seems incidental rather than planned. Nevertheless, the essays are quite enlightening and enjoyable. As an ex-lefty myself, I'm able to appreciate what Horowitz has to say. I'm not quite sure whom this book would suit. I suppose conservatives could use it to gain insight into the mind of a liberal as described by a former lefty. And I suppose there is also hope that a liberal will read it and realize what an intellectually bankrupt and politically dangerous ideology they hold. But I'm under no illusion that many liberals will be open-minded enough to admit to being wrong as Horowitz has so bravely done.

Fiesty, fun, and on-target
In this collection of columns and essays, 60s radical turned neocon David Horowitz turns his attention to Bill, Hillary, Monica, David Brock, Latrell Sprewell, Sydney Blumenthal, Matt Drudge, AIDS, racial politics, muliticulturalism, feminism, and the rest of the characters and issues that have made headlines over the last several years. Horowitz combines a hard-hitting fiestiness with an ability to see the big picture--always mindful of the long-term implications of day-to-day political ideas and events. This book is lighter and breezier than his recent (superlative) autobiography "Radical Son" and the insightful new "Politics of Bad Faith"--here he seems simply to be enjoying the political fray. The last section, "Conservatism with a Heart," explains how the "compassionate conservatism" so much in vogue today can be not just a slogan but also a political that works, and wins. To sum up: "Radical Son" and "Bad Faith" are better main courses, but "Sex, Lies and Vast Conspiracies" is a tasty appetizer.

A good all-around guide to the island
I just got back from my honeymoon in Sicily and I used this guide as well as one or two others. The book helped me with some interesting tips on restaurants and out-of-the-way places, as well as finding me a really nice hotel in Siracusa--something that made our stay there one of the nicest parts of our trip. A little light on maps if you're driving or like detail in your maps, but overall this guide was an asset on my trip.

Best written travel guide I've seen.
More perceptive sense of place than any of the standard guidebook series, with witty histories one wants to read. Less discussion of precautions than student or Lonely, Rough guides, needed for completeness. I recognize those places I've been, and they've found each favorite spot I had to dig to locate. They describe how to stay with locals on remote islands where other books can only suggest you bring a tent. Beautifully printed hip-pocket paperback, complete with an (unattributed) "Italian oldstyle" typeface confirming these are the most cleanly attractive and readable typefaces ever designed.

Great intro to Visual Basic.NET
A great place for anyone to start with programming. If you're already a seasoned programmer you might get bored quickly, but if you're learning VB.NET from the ground up, this book is perfect.

The book is application based, which means that in each chapter you either build or enhance an application from the ground up. This is a great way to see how the concepts translate into reality. You also have to run the programs, so likely there will be the inevitable debugging problems (which is good to get used to if you want to program).

It's slow paced, as it should be for the beginner. There are entire chapters devoted to text boxes and variables and checkboxes. To give you an idea of the pace, Control structures don't appear until chapter 10 (200 pages into the book); Classes and Objects aren't discussed until chapter 19 (400 pages into the book), and Database programming doesn't come along until chapter 25 (almost 600 pages into the book). If you're hoping to learn VB.NET quickly, this is not the book for you. This book is for the programmer who wants mounds and mounds of detail. Persistence will pay off, and when you've eyed the final text on page 752 you'll be well versed in the basics of the Visual Studio.NET IDE and the Visual Basic.NET language (including the basics of Object-Oriented programming and the .NET class libraries). There are even 4 chapters dedicated to ASP.NET to give you a taste of the web programming capabilities of Visual Studio.NET.

I read this book for a refresher (I have previous experience in Visual Basic 6 and Visual Basic.NET) and I was able to complete about 2-3 tutorials from the book per day, which computes into less than a month's time investment. Now I feel pretty confident that I have the fundamentals down.

If you're new to programming, or if you want a back-to-the-basics VB.NET book, this one is a good read.

A good book for begineer
I love this book very much. Colorful, user-friendly and simple to read. If you are the begineer of VB, I recommend this book. You do not need to spend a lot of time to study those thick and professional level in this moment. Get the concept, do more exercises and then you will become an experienced programmer. After that, start to read the professional and thick one.
