These guys are good!
Even though I am not unbiasied, (I do, in fact, love Lefty O'Kane), I would have to comment on the deep-down good feelings that the author has for these men, and also for their women. Happily, they all hold him in the same high esteem. They/we, see him as a 'Good Guy', and therefore read his words with love and warm humor. Even though each of us recognized our spouse, (and ourselves), we knew that we would all be treated with respect, along with great affection.

Could we use a lot more of this positive stuff?

Science Snacks are good nutrition for your students!
This book was one of the luckiest finds I've ever happened upon! It is full of quick, easy, and low-budget ideas to give your classroom an exciting, hands-on boost. My favorite snack was the soap film painting, but there were dozens of others to captivate my students' interest. I was so inspired by this book that I have started having Friday "snacktime" in my class each week. The short experiments in this book make excellent stand-alone enrichment projects that provide opportunities for inquiry-based learning in a short time frame. They also make great introductions to larger-frame studies of light, color, reflection, refraction, diffraction, etc. I found the activities to be appropriate and adaptable to a wide range of grade levels, from elementary through highschool. This book is a must-have for anyone teaching science, or for parents who want to do kitchen chemistry with their children at home.

Horrific , violent existentialism at its most absurd.
Genet based 'The Maids' on an actual event, one he felt a certain kin-ship with. In 1933 french police found Madame Lancelin and her daughter face down, in their living room, utterly mutilated. The eyes had disappeared, all teeth had been knocked out, fragments of bone and flesh were strewn about the floor, walls covered in blood. Upstairs the two servant-maids, the Papin sisters, were found naked, huddled together in one of two single beds. Immediately they confessed. Immediately, also, the papers picked up the story. The public was facinated how these two soft-spoken, mild-mannered girls, without provocation could have acted with such wild brutality. Senseless, irrational violence - Genet's speciality. He uses this story as a means to attack conformaty. A massive revolt against obedience, servitude, and the upperclass. A bloody triumph of individuality . Like other of Genet's works, it primaraly is concerned with Man's free will, or lack there-of. It is an existential story , revealing the darker sides of freedom, and the horror of the responsibility that comes with it. A tale worthy of Genet's genious. Exellent translation. Fans of Genet should also Check out Octave Mirbeau.

Christianity's Origins and Today's Marketing Know-how
An intriguing, highly plausible theory of how Christianity was created by Jews, but only succeeded outside the Jewish faith. The teachings of Jesus were not embraced by the community in which he was born. To be a Jewish Christian you had to keep ALL the laws, including the restrictive dietary ones, and be circumcised. Tough requirements. To be a Gentile (Pauline) Christian you only needed to have faith. This ultimately made for a winning marketing strategy. This superbly researched, thoughtful book will rattle traditionalists -- though not scholar's -- cages. Clear on the impossibility of ever knowing if a man named Jesus even existed, the author elects to write with the working assumption that he did. He then traces the struggle between James, the brother of Jesus, and Paul, the newcomer from the north in their fight to create a new religion, something that Jesus himself never even considered. There were compromises, but Paul gradually began to win the day. First James ceded interest in Gentiles, the largest market, to Paul. Paul had the energy and drive to grow the numbers of people embracing his religious ideas. He made conversion easy for men by dropping circumcision, replacing it with the far easier to take baptism. As an outsider he was not hung up on the issue of Jerusalem. He had no notion of exclusivity and embraced all peoples -- Jew, Gentile, Greek or Roman -- who could be reached from within the Roman Empire. And then the roof fell in on the Jewish Christians directed from Jerusalem. The city was destroyed during the first Jewish revolt, and no Second Coming occurred to save them. James's hope for "his" religion, and James himself, died as a result of the revolt. Paul's Gentile Christians thrived in the wake of their adversary's destruction. The religion Paul invented would rise to become the most powerful monotheistic religion in the world. If you share the author's fascination with this topic, buy the book. His scholarship is excellent, and it's a darn good read.
