Strong and the Weak

Another thought provoking book by Tournier
In his usual style, Dr. Tournier takes the time to develop his subject matter very thoughfully, thoroughly and compassionately. In this book, he contrasts the events and dynamics that lead some to become "weak" and others "strong". The compelling truth he reveals is that ultimately, we may act very differently but we are so much the same in our inner selves. A great book equally helpful for "strong" leaders to understand themselves and those they may be tempted to look down upon, as well as for those who struggle with self-doubt and insecurity, intimidated by the "strong"; also good for couples to gain insight into each other and how these common dynamics may play out in their relationships.

Strong and the Weak
This Swiss Doctor has written a very important book for all of us who want to better understand and appreciate others. Paul Tournier contrasts the terms "weak" and "strong" as they define the way we percieve ourselves and others.

He elevates persons who a utilitarian society might judge inferior and defines for us the sometimes misleading projections of a "strong" person. Very balanced and inclusive of all personalities types.

It was twenty years ago in Holland that I first read this book and it was for me a life changing encounter. It impacted my marriage, my parenting and my service and leadership around the world.

For two decades I have recommended it to others. I came to Amazon tobuy yet another copy.

Obviously I highly recommend Weak and the Strong. Also, the Frenchman, Jean Vanier's book, Community and Growth hits the highest mark.

CD ROM
I am looking for a cd rom of thisbook, may be you can tell me if this cd exists? if yes how can I get it?
best regards Dr` Roman Korobochka MD

obstetrics,high-risk,maternal-fetal medicine
As a woman who has had a history of difficult pregnancies (including unexplained fetal demises), Williams Obstretrics was indispensable to me in my search for the causes of my missed abortions (late miscarriages). Many doctors feel the less patients know from firsthand sources (such as this book), the better it is. But for me, Williams Obstretrics answered many questions not only regarding my losses but also in my uncomplicated pregnancies. OBGYNs don't need to be told about this book; they swear by it. I think their patients should too.

Nation of Nations is a history book that reads like a novel.
Nations of Nations tells the history of our country in a very tangible way that is accessable and interesting. It is a rare history book that focusues as much on the culture and the people from different time periods as the country's leaders and law makers. Which, when studying American History, is of the utmost importance.

AN EASY TO UNDERSTAND BOOK THAT HELPS OUT THE READER!
NATION OF NATIONS VOLUME TWO: SINCE 1865 WAS A FABULOUS TEXT BOOK. THIS BOOK HELPED ME TO BETTER UNDERSTAND ALL ASPECTS OF THE INFORMATION WITHIN. AS A FRESHMAN THIS YEAR I HAD A HARD TIME ADJUSTING TO MY CLASSES BUT WITH THIS TEXT I HAD NO PROBLEMS UNDERSTANDING MY READING ASSIGNMENTS AND ENDED UP DOING VERY WELL IN THE CLASS. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK IF YOU HAVE A HARD TIME PICKING OUT THE IMPORTANT PARTS OF A PARAGRAPH BECAUSE IT HAS GOOD OUTLINES. IT WAS A FANTASTIC TEXT BOOK!

Wow, I needed this book!
As a business owner I seek out all the business advice I can find. This book was jam packed with tons of useful information that I was able to put into immediate use. I loved the personal stories that illustrated the advice because then I knew this was real-life stuff and not just book knowledge. I highly recommend this book to business owners and anyone who wants to be a business owner.

A must if you want to start, sell or buy a business.
Nothing succeeds like success, and this is a marvelous vade mecum to steer you through the pitfalls of the complex jungle of accountants, lawyers, liars, and crooks any new venture is certain to encounter, especially if it is necessary to raise money privately or publicly.

Sugar Rain

Intricate, moody, and fascinating
I managed to collect and read all three books in the series a few years ago, and when I saw only one review, I had to jump in if only to encourage others. As an avid Sci-fi reader, after a while, all apocalyptic societies can run together. Not this collection. This is a brooding, complex world full of rich detail and lots of thought - both by the author and as a result of the reading. You'll be amazed by the callousness that exists in this world where science and magic and delirium and art are on equal footing, jumbled together in a well paced, conceptually terrifying, and just downright amazing series.

A brilliantly morbid, decedant fantasy
I stumbled on Paul Park's three book in the "Starbridge trilogy" at my local public library, and since have read and re-read them a few times. They chronicle revolutionary times in a planetary culture ruled by decade-long seasons. The atmosphere is exotic and lush, yet shot through with extravagent morbid decedance.

The planet was apparently settled by a single human astronaut, but again that's not at all clear; you find that out only in bits and scraps. The most fascinating quality of the books is that they present a moment in the life of a culture, where you catch glimpses of distorted bits of the culture's origins. There is a certain amount of humor in this palimpsest -- a very dour, draconian state religion arises from misinterpretation of the human astronaut's psychotically erotic poetry.

While the book has obviously been inspired by the author's travels in India, the real India is but a starting point for Park's delightfully diseased imagination.

Park's book reminds me of both Nabakov's "Pale Fire" and Wallace's "Infinite Jest" in that the text on the page is only half the story; the other half is the blurred and corrupted text behind the text that the reader can infer from the primary text.

Syssal Kipican
I love this book. My favorite character is Syssal Kipican. But it disappointed me when I heard that the First Quest series was no longer being printed. They're all very imaginative and fun to read. My dream was actually to be able to write a First Quest book myself, but I guess that's out of the question. *Note: DUH. It's a TRIad, so why would it have a fourth book?

Great
Like the other book this one iss absolultly great! By the way if anyone knows if there is a book four then please let me know

Tremendous!
How many politicians take the time to sit back and think about their career, the world around them, and the state of affairs in general? How many take the time to then write what they are thinking and share it with the world? Few; almost none. That is what makes Havel so special and this book so inspiring. By the time you read it many of the arguments he makes for and against certain laws or policies may be largely moot. But that isn't the point! The point of the book is to look at Havel's sense of morality and his philosophy of politics and government. Every politician should be required to read this book!

A breath of fresh air in a world of political smog and smut.
Havel's heart is placed on each page. His masterful ability to break down complex issues with his personal moral code inspires hope and resolve in the reader. A true world leader and example in a world of fallen leaders and stained examples. The reader leaves the book a better person. And in the final analysis, isn't this what it is all about? Havel thinks so.

Sun Prints

Authors: Linda McCartney, Paul McCartney, and Robert Lassam

every photo a story
Sun printing relies on natural sunlight to produce an image on paper brushed with a mixture of minerals. Linda's sunprints have a mystical & elusive quality & in this modern woman's perspective we see combinations of spontaneous poses with still backgrounds; overlays & tonal changes in cyan & sepia.

Such gently detailed, whimsical & earthy sights of a boy print or an amarylis; a castle reflected in its watery moat; a terrace balustrade casting sunny shadows upon snow; a stalwart cactus in a desert or a triad of lanterns on a London bridge; of lively faces & ancient hands; of birds & beaches & seasons' abundance. Meditative, heart-warming, peaceable pictures, some simply swatches of brush strokes offering glimpses of what her eyes had seen.

Linda McCartney's photographs always have stories to tell & make me want to talk about them!

Painting with Light
To photograph well is to paint with light: to see what the fall of light on common or uncommon subjects can reveal, and then to capture that image. Linda McCartney photographed mostly by natural light, and her effort to find a way of developing images in the simplest and most natural way fit in with her basic philosophy of life. I feel sure she was pleased with the notion of making what she called a "strong image" (a good "contrasty" photograph) with the sun's light, and then developing it with sunlight and non-toxic chemicals. At the beginning of her career, she photographed rock musicians with unusual insight--she captured the essential child in some of them: the wicked little girl in Janis Joplin, and the sweet, shy boy in Jimi Hendrix. By the time she was experimenting with the process described and illustrated in this book, she was able to photograph people with the same insight she had always had and to find a sort of classic beauty in the commonest household scenes and landscapes. There are a number of striking photographs here, all enhanced by the "limitations" of the developing method. Photos of her son James, at about the age of ten or eleven, reveal a sturdy elf who glows from within. Her portraits of famous and anonymous people capture their presences with enormous respect, tenderness, and some amusement. One of my favorite juxtapositions places a serious dog named Merdock opposite a shot of her husband peering through a magnifying glass. The dog has much more dignity. This is a book of photographs by a master of her art--she captures a rainbow of insights in earthy browns and true blues. I bought this book second hand for more than twice the price of the new edition. We are fortunate to have a new edition, and, if we like photography at all, real stupid not to buy it right now.

essay writing at its best
This is a wonderful collection for fans of Theroux and writers who want to study the craft of essay writing. The range of topics is wide, covering everything from travel (of course) to politics (Nixon) to Tarzan-as-expatriate. It's also a great window into Theroux's development as a writer as it spans two and a half decades of his career.

I had the pleasure of reading these when I was in the Peace Corps myself, stationed in the Nepal highlands. Thanks for the fun and inspiration, Paul!

A quirky, evocative collection.
Even without taking my copy of this down from the shelf, a mental vision of the cover conjures up brief mnemonic wisps of mental perfume: sailing on Cape Cod, his memories of Africa, the tale of the unironed shirt and the burrowing mites, the essay on extended family that has always made me wistful for the experience or at least envious to have a doctor and lawyer available for free consultations. Influential stuff from a more or less acerbic personality.

Extraordinarily Clear and Useful
I've used a number of this author's books and they all share in common lucidity, utility, and rigor. This book makes it easy to grasp complex ideas, provides comprehensible examples, gives sample SAS code so that implementing the methods is as straightforward as possible. Plus, it is clear that the author is a subtle and first-rate methodologist, who innovates in this area as well as teaches it.

Best how-to book on survival analysis using SAS. Very useful
This book is well-written, well-organized, and very practical. I found it invaluable in conducting my research. My only recommendation for the author for his next edition is to include a chapter on dealing with correlated event times, like time-to-promotion and time-to-quiting in his policemen example (pg 249).
