The Gay 90s: What the Empirical Evidence Reveals About Homosexuality

Quackery, Pure and Simple
Our friend from Finland writes:

>>The author, an established psychological researcher whose contribtions appear regularly in scholarly journals, makes an overview over studies concerning homosexual behavior.<<

Cameron has lost his standing and was removed from the American Psycoholgical Association because of his completely unscientific approach to homosexuality. The only ones who take his writing seriously any longer are the extremists on the Christian Right. The man is a quack.

>>Evidence abound that the homosexual life-style is associated with numerous pathologies. Consider these examples:

* 20-30% of all child molestations are homosexual in nature, although gays comprise 1-3% of the population.<<

Not true and Cameron presents skewed statistics. Pedophilia, regardless of the sex of the victims, is not scientifically defined as either hetero- or homoxexual behavior, per se.

>>* Gays are dramatically overrepresented in crime statistics. According to one source, about half of the young murderers in Washington state have been involved in homosexuality.<<

Most of which was prison rape. Not a homosexual act, but an expression of power. The vast majority of incidents of that type of rape is committed by heterosexuals.

>>* The average life span for homosexuals is 42 years - aids-victims NOT counted. Taking into account those who die in aids, the average is 39 years.<<

This assertion by Cameron is simply a lie and he presents no verifiable evidence to back up his assertions. This is one of the statistics most beloved of the Xtian Reich, and it is simply not true.

>>* Two independent surveys show that aids has caused gays to reduce the number of partners from about 70 to ca 50 annually. Most gays say that more than half of their partners have been one night-stands. Only 4% claimed to have had only one partner during the past twelve months.<<

True, but improving. And your point is? Are you jealous?

>>The author does not claim that most gays are dangerous, but points to the fact that various abnormalities, including violent crimes, are highly overrepresented among homosexuals, which suggests that it is a harmfull disorder.<<

Again, a complete fabrication. He has no evidence to back up this assertion.

>>He also shows that sexual orientation is not immutable - in fact most gays report having changed sexual orientation one or several times during their life.<<

Again, a lie. Simply not true and Cameron knows it. He just makes it up as he goes along. Those lecture fees from the religious reich are hefty and this is the stuff they love to hear. They don't care a bit if it's true or not. Sad.

If You Aren't Afraid of the Truth, Read This Book
Hooray for Dr. Cameron! - not many people are strong enough to stand up and speak the truth these days. He uncovers flawed studies that have hurt our Nation for years.

Revealing findings; an undispensable source
The author, an established psychological researcher whose contribtions appear regularly in scholarly journals, makes an overview over studies concerning homosexual behavior. Evidence abound that the homosexual life-style is associated with numerous pathologies. Consider these examples:

Of related interest is the books by Gerard van den Aardweg, a Dutch psychotherapist who has worked with therapy for gays for thirty years.

Geostatistics : Modeling Spatial Uncertainty

A fatally flawed variant of applied statistics
Geostatistics is a fatally flawed variant of applied statistics because it violates the fundamental requirement of functional independence and ignores the concept of degrees of freedom. Without degrees of freedom unbiased statistical inferences are impossible to obtain.

Highly recommended!
Highly recommended! This is easily the most comprehensive, scholarly, and up-to-date work in the area.

The authors cover the entire range of geostatistics - structural analysis (variogram fitting), kriging, multivariate and nonlinear methods, conditional simulation, scale effects, and inverse problems. The chapter on geostatistical simulation is particularly impressive, and much unpublished work of Georges Matheron and the Center for Geostatistics at Fontainebleau, France, is made available here for the first time. Practical and theoretical aspects of geostatistics balance each other very nicely.

This is not an introductory text - there are other books in the area which are custom-tailored to beginners - but it is an invaluable, and very carefully written, reference. For anyone applying geostatistical techniques in environmental sciences, earth sciences, engineering, or related fields, this book is a must-have!

the reference book in geostatistics
There are a large number of books on geostatistics, usually introductory books dealing with parts of the subject. The volume by Chiles and Delfiner is THE comprehensive reference book in geostatistics that has been missing up to now.

It covers every part of geostatistics. After a useful introduction and preliminaries, different chapters are devoted successively to structural analysis, kriging, the intrinsic model of order k, multivariate methods, nonlinear methods, conditional simulations, scale effects and inverse problems.

Within each section, the book offers an accurate perspective of the different geostatistical methods. Practical approaches as well as theoretical developments are jointly considered, providing a sound basis to the user.

The writing is fluent, with an extensive documentation and a most helpful index.

The book will benefit those who want to know more about a specific method, as well as those who are looking for different approaches to a given problem. It will be valuable for academics and students, as well as scientists, engineers and practitioners from different domains such as mining, hydrogeology, oil exploration, soil science, forestry, and environmental sciences.

Brodeur scared the public about a non-existent risk
Brodeur is a powerful writer, and his book launched a series of investigations of possible effects of magnetic fields from power lines. In the last couple of years, the verdict is in: power lines do not have a detectable health effect. Brodeur was wrong. Brodeur caused authorities in several countries to waste enormous amounts of money: estimates range from hundreds of millions of dollars to the billions. He's a scaremonger. John W. Farley Professor of Physics University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Incredible reading
I found this book possibly the most provocative reading ever. I did extensive research to validate Mr. Brodeur's claims and am forever in his debt for bringing to light the hazards of the power line industry. Despite the pundits, the research is there to support Brodeur's exposé. I can't recommend this book enough to ANYONE who cares about their health, and that's all of us with a brain.

MUST READING!!!!!!
The verdit is far from "in" on Brodeur's subject. Indeed, recent (1998) studies reveal that he is quite right on numerous counts. Anyone that remotely cares about this subject should read Brodeur's books.

Whiskey... and some other spirits too
A lovely cover, interesting (albeit cliche) anecdotes, and a blatant bias toward whiskys and industry leaders (sponsors?)combine to make this one of the least interesting options to the person looking for a comprehensive guide to spirits. One rather obvious example: when ranking a list of over 70 rums from almost 20 different regional sources somehow every single rum from Puerto Rico & the U.S. Virgin Islands was listed as "superior". Considering that Bacardi was included in the list as one of these exceptional nectars one must raise a skeptical eye. 88 of the just over 200 pages are devoted to whisky making all of the other "high spirits" seem little more than an afterthought.

Great Book to Appreciate Fine Spirits
This book is a great book to learn the lore of the different classes of spirits. Mr. Jeffers covers all of the spirits in the title and also has chapters on Rum, Gin, Tequila, Vodka and Liqueurs. This book really helped me understand the differences between the spirits and gave me an appreciation for spirits other than Whisk(e)y and Rum. Mr. Jeffers recommends what a well stocked bar should have. He also offers ratings of many brands of spirits in each classes. His ratings are limited to three levels, though. In the section on liqueurs, he discusses the great varieties of them and explains many of the differences. He explains that Cognac and Armagnac are Brandies distilled in specific regions of France. This book also has some color pictures of the different spirits and their advertising. An excellent book for someone who wants to appreciate fine spirits.

Terrific book!
After reading the Cigar book.....Kevin Gordon is the finest illustrator in the biz.

Directions to trailheads leave you confused!
Beware, although the descriptions of the actual hikes are average, the directions given to the trailheads are terrible!

I used this book to climb Mt. Handies, Redcloud, Sunshine, and Sneffels (all 14,000' peaks) and was utterly confused on how to find the trailheads! Located in the Alpine Loop that connects Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride, we spent many precious hours searching in four-wheel drive terrain for the trailheads. In the end, the trailhead was a simple location and could have been described in a much better way. The result was that we nearly ended up stuck in the mountains due to running out of gas! We only made it because of a kind stranger.

To Pixler's credit, the description of the actual hikes are good, although the distances seemed consistently off. I especially appreciated a few hints on shortcuts for the Redcloud hike, as it saved about a mile and a half of hiking!

There are definitely better books out there, but this will do if you can't find anything else.

The classic SW CO hiking guide
As the other review states, this is the classic SW Colorado hiking guide.

One caveat: the difficulty ratings are for SW Colorado climbs *compared to each other*. I have run across many tourists on trails in the San Juans who tackled a "moderate" climb from the book only to find it extremely difficult.

I think the ratings are accurate, *if* you live in the area and hike regularly. If you're not used to altitude and not in good shape, take this into consideration.

Outstanding Hiking Guide to Durango and Beyond
Since I've moved to Durango, a ratty copy of the 2nd edition of this book from the public library has been my hiking bible. The 3rd edition is completely revised, chock full of great maps and is really THE reference for day hikes and backpacking trips in the Durango/Silverton area.

If you're visiting or living in Southern Colorado, you need this book.

Thanks Paul!

Hobbyist Guide to Catfish and Loaches
Published in Hardcover by Tetra Pr (April, 1994)
Authors: Paul V. Loiselle and David Pool
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

If you like loaches, this is not the book for you
Many things are disapointing about this publication if you are not a catfish enthusiast. The text covering the loaches is not even close to an adequate assessment of this group. It seems as if the author simply needed to fill some space or broaden the material covered in the book. One chapter is devoted to captive breeding of the clown loach (Botia macracanthus), but this too is a let-down. If you are a serious loach fanatic you will probably find a few tidbits of information helpful, but for most others it simply isn't worth purchasing.

Hobbyist Guide to Catfish and more Catfish
If you're into loaches, this book lacks in information. Most of the book concentrates on catfish. There is a section recounting an incident of clown loaches bred in captivity, but that's about it. A little disappointing for loach lovers.

Exellent!! Outstanding everything you need on loaches!!!!
Perfect book!!! Loaches Rule!!!

This is one terrible book!
This book is the worst. Anyone trying to learn electromagetism on their own or even in a class should definitely steer clear of this book. The writing is very terse, there are very few examples, and the few examples included are complicated, poorly done, and poorly explained.

I'm from Raleigh too
And I find this an okay book. Hey other guy from Raleigh, was it really that bad? Do you think it's worse than the previous book, by Griffiths? Do you know of a much better EM textbook?

this is one of the better books on E&M
the last reviewer doesnt know what he/she is talking about. this is one of the best books around. the explanation is very clear
and is always geared toward understanding the physics of what the hell is going on. the examples are all practical and emphasize the physics. not just calculate "this" or "that" "here" and "there". just
go to a bookstore and take a look at the book and u see what i
mean. i was trying to understand what is the magnetic pressure
and i looked at 10 books, this one has the best illustration.
also the special relativity is very clear.

John McLaughlin deserves better
There is almost nothing interesting in this book.

Go Ahead John: the Music of John McLaughlin
The book starts off very well with interesting antecdotes of McLaughlin's early years. As it progresses, however, there is very little information about McLaughlin the man. There is also very little discription about his years with Miles Davis and the time he spent in India with Shakti. Most of the book seems to focus primarily on reviewing each album one after the other, but many of the reviews are not positive.

Granted, the book is subtitled the "music" of John Mclaughlin, and there is definitely some worthwhile information in the book for McLaughlin fans. A book about his life is long overdue. Its unfortunate that it could not have been written by a closer source or perhaps from the man himself.

Excellent account of McLaughlin
This is a tireless history of John McLaughlin and the amazing places and experiences that he has had. Paul Stump has some great insight, as well.

Pretty tiresome reading.
Standard DC type story with the new Green Landarn and Green Arrow hopeing to avoid a gang war that will tear a city apart. Both lousy writing and lousy artwork on hand.

great idea-not so good story
what a great idea for a book, team up the new emerald heros.to bad the story writers didn't do more with it.i found that the story was long and drawn out.it was cool that they went places the original heros went and battled some of their old foes.i just didn't get hooked on the plot.the art work was good.as much as i wanted to get into this book it let me down.i was looking for some action but only got it in small(very small)doses,i would recomend buying this book just so you can compair the adventures of both the old and new.

Lantern's Light Shines Bright
While the 3rd generation Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) has often seemed something less than stellar, his partner in this book (Green Arrow, Connor Hawke,) makes him shine. Kyle and Connor prove to be perfect foils for each other: one quiet, reserved, analytical, and wary whereas the other is loud, headstrong, and quick to jump into any danger presented to him.

But what is great about this book is that they don't JUST go around beating up bad guys. Part of this book, Green Lantern is looking for his father with Green Arrow's help. For the other part, Lantern and Arrow have to fight a potential racial war in New York.

These stories are far beyond your average "Find his secret hideout and beat him mercilessly!" These are actually WELL WRITTEN and thoughtful. The art is great too. And while "pro-Hal Jordan" fans may not like Kyle Rayner enough to buy this book, they are really missing out.

Hegel in 90 Minutes (Philosophers in 90 Minutes)

Author: Paul Strathern
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Dreadful!
Strathern's book simply reproduces the ignorant prejudices against Hegel that have bedevilled Anglo-American philosophy. Who should read this book- anyone who wants to make a few dismissive remarks about Hegel in order to give the appearance of learning at a cocktail party. Who should not read this book- anyone who might want to learn something from Hegel.

A fun and helpful 90-minute course in Hegel
This is a witty account and overview of the life and works of Hegel, a challenge for anyone who thought Kant was difficult. The book keeps its promise to tell you everything it can about Hegel in 90 minutes -- the problem is just that you can't learn all that much about Hegel in just 90 minutes.

Strathern hits the mark again!
Strathern is a master at this kind of work, which mixes biography, critical analysis, historical context and humor all in a concise, informative & entertaining package. He lists a time line for the philosopher, his place in world/philosophic history & a selection of works for furthur reading. This series of books by Strathern is a wonderful course in Philosophy 101 without ever having to go to college, all presented in plain, easy to understand English without being bogged down with philosophy's often confusing vernacular.
