Take this book to Las Vegas along with "Das Kapital"
This book contains a lot of wit and wisdom gathered from a vast array of sources. Gambling pervades the economy of the American masculine soul, so we need to study it as art and as disease, and this book is a wonderful resources in that regard. Like the man said in the pool hall, take this book to Las Vegas along with "Das Kapital" and your lucky mojo charm.

The Reader's Got the Edge
"Eat your betting money, but don't bet your eating money," may be true for some, but betting $20 of your eating money on this book will get you food for thought. The book groups quotations in categories and starts each category with commentary by editor Paul Lyons. Quotations come from writers, gamblers, sages, and whatall from all over the world and throughout history. A sure bet if ever there was one.

Widened my perceptions of the philosophy of gambling.
I've always loved gambling, whether in a friendly poker game or I'll place a trifecta during lunch so after work I can see if I hit--there's a thrill in not knowing, having the possibility--I mean, maybe you won ten grand and you don't know it. I never thought much about that thrill, but when I saw this book on the shelf in Barnes & Noble and flipped it open I came across all these passages with people's insights on why and how people gamble. I never really thought of gambling in connection to belief or religion, but this book shows how gambling goes way back into the history of many cultures and how it appeals to that contest between human beings and their destinies. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand gambling better.

A beautiful book
This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Yet I know that even 5 years ago it would not have touched me. Growing up as a mainstream Christian, I knew that there was truth in what I was taught, but there was also much that did not resonate as an adult. This book can bring clarity to anyone on the spiritual journey, and especially those who know in their hearts the the Christian journey is for them.

From the author of The Spirit of Joy
I don't know if I've read this entire book, because it one of those special books that sits on my desk to be opened in moments when I seek inspiration. It has been my experience that every paragraph is a gift, every page an abundance of truth. It shares, with profound insight, the meaning and value of life, and how we can experience that meaning and value day in and day out.

PROFOUND READING
This book just blew me away. The information on these pages is very profound and has the ability to alter the way you view life. I never knew (not being very religious) that these teachings could have such a powerful effect on me, but it does. It really helps me to become a more fulfilled and more centered person. This is what they forgot to teach us when we went to school, 101 in living! If this is the only book you read this year you are lucky!

An amazing adventure!
"The Rosetta Stone of God" is not your typical "how I found God" story. Through a combination of luck, grace, discipline, trust and effort, the author pieces together 12 startling "aspects" of "God". Each aspect is expanded upon in its own chapter and then tied together beautifully at the end in a handy "Seeker's Checklist". He cites his own experiences as well as dreams, coincidences and his research of various texts and finds a cohesive thread running through all of them. His effort, perservance and ingenuity I found very inspiring. Also, the straightforward presentation eschews fluffy, cosmic, mumbo jumbo for clarity, simplicity and even logic. It was worth several reads to me.

Also recommended:"The Secret Language of Waking Dreams" by Mike Avery; "35 Golden Keys to Who You Are & Why You're Here" by Linda Anderson; "Autobiography of a Modern Prophet", "The Living Word: Book 2" and "A Modern Prophet" all 3 by Harold Klemp.

Recognizing a miracle
The Rosetta Stone of God is exactly the book my heart was seeking on these shelves. I ran across the most amazing and healing quote on pg.230....

"Man confuses self-knowledge with the knowledge of his conscious ego-personality," say the Shariyat." One who has any ego-consciousness at all takes it for granted that he knows himself. But the ego knows only its own contents, not the psychic self and its contents. Man measures his self-knowledge by what the average person in his social environment knows of himself, not the real spiritual facts which are for the most part hidden from him."

This quote simply woke up my heart center! :-) What an amazing book James Davis has shared with us. :-)

A CALL TO ADVENTURE!
While working for a forest protection agency as part of a fire-fighting crew, the author fell through a wall of branches and found himself teetering on the end of a log as it jutted out over the edge of a cliff. Some thirty feet below are jagged boulders. Pitching forward and falling, he is saved by the firm hand of an unseen loving presence that pushes him back to safety and solid ground. So begins the first of six miracles experienced by James Davis. He calls thems gifts intended to open a different window to heaven. The book details a natural progression of insights drawn from his personal experiences, dreams, and synchronicities of a mysterious key which keeps appearing at various intervals in his path. The Egyptian Rosetta Stone is a historical key which unlocked writings of a lost civilization. Mr Davis' "Rosetta Stone of God" similarly unlocks "treasures from the vaults of heaven" by reminding us of our own gifts. The book is a call to spiritual adventure, a nudge to be more alert and aware of the synchroncities, turning points and miracles in our own lives. If you like reading " Celestine Prophecy", or books by Deepak Chopkra, James Van Praagh, Dr. Michael Weiss, Joan Grant, or Dr Michael Newton, you will appreciate this author's work. Mr Davis invites readers to document your own personal experiences: keep daily notes- a living travelog of your life, including the discoveries that are special to just you. I like this book. It is clear, timely, and highlights alternative choices, options for facing todays current challenges and issues. Highly recommended for those seriously interested in spiritual knowledge and spiritual adventure.

Extremely Helpful
Many of the books on the market today are cutesy and lack the content that someone who needs an answer now demands. This book contains a lot of hands on information. So far, I haven't run into a situation where I needed help and this book couldn't provide it. I usually don't have more than five minutes to find an answer to questions, so most of the books I've tried don't come close to helping me. The organization of this book makes it a snap to find any answer. If you want a no nonsense answer to your questions fast, this is the book to get. Make sure you contact the author too. I saw his message asking for reader input and thought he'd ignore me like other authors do. This guy is serious--he really does want to hear from you.

Very helpful and informative
Although I have used many flavors of Windows in both business and at home, Windows XP offers many new features. This book glides the reader through all aspects of the operating system with just the right amount of detail without otherwhelming you. I found the book to be very useful and have referred to it many times. The author is very knowledge of the entire suite of features built into Windows XP.

Highly Informative and User -Friendly
I learned more about a Windows operating system in a week with this book than I learned since I first used Windows 3.1 up thru last week. I'm a home user now, but this book will teach and inform users from home PC novices to office professionals. It covers both the Home and Professional Editions, and if you don't need the latter, it's easily skipped. Full of helpful tips and warnings when you might get into dangerous waters. Wish I'd have had a manual like this when I was an office administrator. One of the best computer manuals I've used!

Yellowstone 101
'Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in knowing the "Yellowstone story" at a deeper level than the interpretive signs or tourist pamphlets. This would be excellent (and easy) "pre-reading" for anyone contemplating a first trip to Yellowstone....but it is also a fascinating and sometimes surprising eye-opener for someone (like me) who was somewhat familiar with Yellowstone already. From the perspective only a former Yellowstone employee and prolific writer/researcher could bring, Schullery persuasively argues-not unlike the "new western historians" in their iconoclastic reassessment of the American west and its history)-that Yellowstone is not so much a place as a process...a process of how we as Americans define a national park. Schullery's measured tour through this process provides a sobering reminder to inveterate tree-huggers like me that a national park is not a wilderness area, as much as I might like it to be in terms of "hands off" preservation. Schullery's approach is matter-of-fact, methodically researched (I actually enjoyed reading the copious "notes" section separately after having finished the book) and myth-busting at times (e.g. that surprisingly, the total number of developed acres in Yellowstone has actually decreased during the last 40 years rather than increased). He doesn't even spare himself, needling enthusiastic fly-fishers like himself with the sad-but-true fact that if we treated the ungulates of Yellowstone the same way fishermen do a Yellowstone trout (which was probably introduced in the first place rather than native), we would be cited for abusing the wildlife. A very readable and important book.

Best book about Yellowstone NP so far
I read this book in a week and was quite impressed with the breadth of history covered in 260 something pages, not counting notes. I was glad to see that this historical account began with an "anthropological" perspective by recounting the known presence of Native American tribes prior to the EuroAmerican "discovery" of the place and the manner in which they were extricated from the ecosystem. I was also impressed with the historical information relating the misuse, management practices and policies that affected the life of the park once it was established and what changes have been implemented in recent years. The notes following the text were very helpful in leading me to other books and records that I would like to examine. A fine book that I purchased after reading the library copy!

Cuts through the hype to expose the reality of Yellowstone
It's difficult, while standing in a crowd in front of Old Faithful, to tell what Yellowstone really means to us. We often define or judge the park based on our expectations of it, but its real value in many ways hovers far beyond our narrow expectations.

In Searching for Yellowstone, newly available in paperback, consummate park historian Paul Schullery slices through human fanfare and rhetoric that surrounds so many park issues today and traces Yellowstone's true history in a methodical and understated way that lets the park speak for itself for a change. If you come to this book with an open mind, Schullery may open it even wider.

The best Vietnam Air War Author
I have read most of Mark berent's books and they are without a doubt the very best. I know that thye are based in part for sure of real events that took place. Rolling Thunder makes reference to several people and events that I know for a fact did occur, such as the person from the 354'th who shot back at a ship , the Turkestan in Cam Pha and got hauled into a court martial trial along wioht the C.O. The names and some of the story regarding that were changed. Berent makes you feel like you are there along with those guys that busted their butts to fight a war that they were not allowed to win. He has a way of creating characters and other things that are truly realistic, flight line up cards, Frag order etc. IT is very hard to start one of his novels and put it down. THe only bad thing is that you realize tha tyou are almost done reading before long. His knowledge of airplanes and creating a scen for the reader is unmatched by any writer that I know of. I've read all of the books I own several times.

Top Read
A great read for air combat fans.... Berent knows his stuff and more importantly knows how to weave a plethora of technical info into a gripping storyline. Higly recommended.

The Real Thing
So true, you just know that the author lived the setting and life. The story is dramatic without being smarmy, or ridiculous. A great read -

The Roots of Consciousness: The Classic Encyclopedia of Consciousness Studies

The Very Best Coffee Table Parapsychology Book!
THE ROOTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS was written by the world's one and only doctor in parapsychology, Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove. Few people are as well-connected with pioneers in the field of conciousness as Mishlove, and his lifetime of experience with psychic research is reflected in what is certainly the most complete compendium of consciousness studies ever.

Have you ever wondered whether people's feelings towards one another could be captured on film, or whether animals can communicate with humans? Would you like to better understand metal-bending, psychokinesis, UFOs and out-of-body phenomenons? If you answered, "yes" to any of the above, this is the book for you.

THE ROOTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS is large (wide, thick and heavy), with lots of excellent black and white photographs and illustrations, which makes it an ideal conversation-starter when placed atop your coffee table. By flipping this book open randomly to any given page, one is immediately rewarded with fascinating insights into the details of some branch of parapsychology. Mishlove's interdisciplinary expertise lends this book tremendous depth and breadth of scope, as it includes history, mathematics, physics, psychology, and religion.

I love the way this book is organized into several main sections which cover history, folklore, scientific studies, and theories to explain what is going on when people demonstrate extraordinary events and human abilities. I appreciate the balanced way that Mishlove covers the facts free from hyperbole -- and the way he includes the perspective of skeptics such as James Randi along with the point of view of researchers in the field of psi.

While THE ROOTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS is currently out of print, it is well worth finding a copy!

The History and Science of Psychic Phenomena
While researching for my own book, I was fortunate enough to talk to a psychic who led me to this book. While that may sound strange, it's the truth. This truly is an encyclopedia of counsciouness studies. From the history to the folklore to the scientific exploration of psychic phenomena, Jeffrey Mishlove has compiled an amazing resource for anyone interested in the topic.

The Implicate Order is: Glean this Tome
Whether it's Rabindranath Tagore and the autistic Albert Einstein in a great tete a tete or the little known side effects of Lie Algebras in the absurdly complex maintenance of observer created reality, Mishlove has stalwartly and never unaccidentably fashioned the great hidden thing of the nineties. Beware, kids, and work on your number theory!

I like reading Pony Pals books. I like to read them with my friends. And sometimes even when I'm alone. Sometimes I like to pretend I'm a pony! These books are great!

The Pony Pals are super duper and I can read a book in 1 day
This is a great book for the Pony Pal fan. I started my own Pony Pal group with my friends. We all read the book and then get together and talk about it. My mom used to read them to me, but now I can read them myself! I've learned so much, I even know what strangles are now! Thanks Pony Pals!

Scorched earth; Hitler's war on Russia

Average review score:

Not as good as Hitler Moves east but still nice
Tells the odissey of the 2nd phase of the invasion of Russia, and, altough not as interesting as the 1rst phase (the invasion and the failure at Moscow), the Germans keep giving the Russians a hard time, untill their horrendous defeat at Kursk. The very best on both books is the soldier's letters and comments, that places you right in the front.

Scorched Earth The Russian-German War 1943-1944
This has to be one of the best books ever written on the Russian-German War. Paul Carell has a way of making you feel like you were there with the troops. Very hard to put down. I have read this book twice, and will read it somemore

Excellent account of unmitigated disaster.
Second volume of Carell's detailed account of the hideous conflict between Germans and Russians in the second world war. The Russians lost and lost and lost, but won. They lost 20 million souls. They prevailed.
