SPADA - Anthology of Swordsmanship
SPADA is a journal that contains some of most current ideas on historical swordsmanship by a number of the field's leading researchers. As a student of historical swordsmanship myself, I think it is an excellent step in the right direction for the progression of this school of study.

As far as the contents of the book are concerned, my hat goes off to the editor, Stephen Hand, for distilling such a diverse, and yet interesting range of papers from the vast array of excellent treatises available.

The book also features some interesting reports on some of the most recent activities undertaken in the WMA community. This provides the reader with a very good 'big picture' perspective into what advances are being made in what fields, and an appreciation for the vast range of people who are now interested in historical swordsmanship.

With regards to it's practicality, the book caters for many different tastes - whether you are interested in the finesse of renaissance fencing, or simply a medieval re-enactor using the trusty 'sword and shield' method. SPADA provides useful insights and a greater understanding of historical methods of fighting.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining a greater appreciation of historical swordsmanship, and anyone who is curious to know what the swordmanship community out there is doing. I rate it as a 'must have' item, and I look forward to more SPADA releases in the future.

cheers

A very informative book for intense studies
Spanish for Mastery II provides you with excellent Spanish daily-life situation to get into the use of the language in a very easy way for either a stundent learning in class or anyone who wants to acquire idiomatic knowledges in self-study. As an exchange stundent from Germany I think, in contrast to other study materials, this is a rather vivid study material in combination with the tools like the S. for M. II workbook. The grammatical part is in my opinion placed well to the student's progress of learning making the student build up a good tight knowledge to apply. Nevertheless, it is required to work with the book regularly. Also, the books provides the student with important cultural aspects and historical information.

The story of an incredible life
I was so pleased to finally read Tommy Wu's completed life story that takes you through the turbulent times of recent Chinese history. I was especially delighted because I met Tommy at the Central Institute of Fine Arts in 1987 and read his incomplete manuscript and wondered how he would get his story out. Tommy is an incredible person and a delightful storyteller. His book will share the pain, suffering, and turmoil of life in China but his bubbling optimism brings hope for the future. This book is a must read for anyone interested in China and the spirit of survival.

Sparta and Lakonia: A Regional History 1300-362 BC

An extensive history of Sparta
Paul Cartledge of the university of Cambridge is arguably the foremost authority on ancient Sparta in the entire world. His erudition of this culture is unmatched and the bibliography of this book is quite a read in-itself.

In this work Cartledge undertakes the massive task of tracing the history of Lacedamon from 1300-362BCE. In other words, right around the time of the mythical / quasi-historical Trojan war (1283BCE) down to the time of the decisive Spartan defeat @ the battle of Leuctra (371BCE).

The reader should be advised that the opening stanzas of this book are difficult to follow. Cartledge casually alludes to endless archeological digs all over Laconia at such a rapid pace that it's apt to make the reader feel like it's information overload. While grad students in archeology and anthropology might feel right at home, the rest of us may feel a bit lost.

When Cartledge arrives in the more familiar historical territory of Herodotus and Thucydides the book seems to improve a great deal. At least for me, anyway. The exegesis of historical records has always been easier for me to comprehend than the interpretation of pre-literate societal structures.

One of the highlights of the book is Cartledge's discussion of the 3 classes of Spartans (Homoioi, Perioikoi & Helot). I had some degree of knowledge of the Homoioi & Helots before reading this work, but virtually no understanding of the Perioikoi. Thanks to his chapter on these people I now have a much better comprehension.

I would recommend this book only to those who have an ambitious yearning to understand the history of the Spartans. For those who would rather have a more concise and slightly more reader-friendly work I would recommend A HISTORY OF SPARTA 950-192 by W.G. Forrest (ASIN: 0393004813). Forrest's book also goes a few hundred years past Leuctra while the present book does not.

Also, it is imperative that prior to reading the present text that the reader first peruse Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon & a little Plutarch mixed in wouldn't hurt. I do not think it prudent for someone to undertake the present work without at least a working knowledge of the primary sources.

A pretty good textbook with material not found elsewhere
If you are considering buying this book, you will probably want to do so. If you are interested in applying regional analysis or the "new" spatial economics that they present, you will have a good starting point. The necessary background is probably be a year of Ph.D. level economic theory. Specific high points are the exposition of the Dixit-Stiglitz model of monopolistic competition and the evolution of urban systems. All new Ph.D. students will have a use for chapter 4, which is an easy-to-read discussion of monopolistic competition. Further, the book is rigorous enough to be used in academic work. I recommend it to anyone interested in regional or urban economics. It is useful to students and practicing economists alike. Its rigor makes it academic, but its ease of exposition makes it useful for those without extraordinary math backgrounds. Compared to similar books, you get a lot of value for the price.

If you drive you speed and if you speed then read this book!
Well written, logical, easy to read. All points make good sense.

I am someone who drives over 30,000 miles per year. When you drive this much you WILL get a ticket. Since I have read this book and begun applying its principles I have been able to get out of more tickets than you would believe. The author plainly clarifies what motivates a cop to give you a ticket and gives you excellent suggestions as to how to prevent getting a ticket in the first place.

At one time, I thought that there was no use fighting the system. Reading this book inspired me to learn more on the subject and now I fight EVERY ticket and win almost EVERY one, even when the cop shows in court. Even if you only learn one new tip (and you will learn many more that that) you will never be sorry that you bought this book.

This is a wonderful book
The authors present an exceptionally clear treatment of Clifford algebras, Clifford C*-algebras, and von Neumann Clifford algebras, their Fock representations and related developments. The proofs are concise and to the point.
