I think Kitten Crowd is brilliant.I espesially like thepart when one of the kittens gets stuck up a tree and nobodycan get it but then the fireman come... Read it to find outif they save the kitten or not

What a Good book
I thought this book was good!i loved the part when she writes the Diary!

Kitten Crowd is brilliant
It's about this little girl -- her parents died in a car crash -- but it didn't say that in the book. I learned it earlier. It's also about six kittens. Their owner is moving and they only have till Saturday to find homes for the kittens or else they'll be put down to sleep. I think if you're reading Animal Ark books, that's a good start.

Solid foundation, shaky building
The first 162 pages of this book are great. Steele could spin them off into a short textbook. The explanations of antibody diversity, gene rearrangement and hypermutation are really very good. The rest is a little hard to believe, and where the immune system is concerned doesn't even make sense. Adaptability and variability, not hard-coding, are key to the immune response, so it seems that what he proposes--that learned responses could be passed back into germ-line DNA--wouldn't even be benficial if it were to turn out to be true considering the rate at which most pathogens mutate. But, let the experts address that question. For an overview of antibody production, this is done well.

yet another surprise from nature
A book requiring remarckable courage in the orthodox scientific climate of today, given that Darwinian evolution is generally accepted and most views contrary are considered virtual heresy. The possibility of the passing on of acquired characteristics from a parent to an offspring was first proposed by Lamarck some 200 years ago. This new book suggests from experimental evidence gathered over decades that it is possible for immune functions to be passed from parent to offspring this prceeds via retroviruses being able to infect sex cells such as sperm and ovum. Certainly not an unreasonable possibility and given the strong evidence shown in the book not to be passed over lightly. Although the technical details of the biochemistry involved are at times heavy going the authors attempt to alleviate this through a useful glossary and explanations when necessary. Not easy to follow but worth the effort. The book certainly asks some major questions of accepted dogma.

Once again this book highlights that just when the accepted authorities are fixed and comfortable in their domain along comes something to surprise them and everyone, nature just can't stop being creative and interesting can it.

Daring and instructive
A book based on new scientific knowledge, not vague old ideas. The authors put forward precise statements and hypotheses about inheritance of acquired immunity. I find it very instructive for its vulgarization of molecular genetics and of the functioning of the immune system, which is not easy to find elsewhere. I also like its openness and its boldness, which will certainly be attractive for all inquisitive minds.

An early English novel, with a twist.
This book has less to do with slavery and more to do with the quest for middle-class status in England. For comparison, one should also read "ROBINSON CRUSOE" by Daniel Defoe and "PAMELA" by Samuel Richardson.

allows for personal reflection....
It is hard to rate a book like this...

You must read it if you're even considering it and once you've read it, you should pass it on to someone else. Life dishes us a lot. Life dishes out some people more hardship than others and sometimes we get the opportunity to give ourselves and those we love a chance at a better life. Not only does this book tell a wonderful story of a man who found strength most of us never realize we possess, but in doing so - has proven the power of language, written and spoken. The world can be full of possobilities in even the most impossible situations - to say nothing of the horror we inflict upon each other...but that's another story.

British Slavery???
In fact, there was never any african slavery inside Britain itself. i.e. England, Scotland and Wales. But this book highlights how the British went to the Caribbean islands like Jamaica and Barbados; claimed it for themselves; and from there imported slaves from Africa to grow sugar cane. Equiano was one such slave who worked hard to buy back his freedom. He eventually walked the streets of London as a free man, but he became a sailor who was once again subjected to slavery once he left England - even as he travelled and worked on his ship - much to his disgust. Slavery existed in the British Empire but was not tolerated at any time within Britain itself. For that you'd have to study the Roman rule of Britain before the British Empire was established.

Excellent reading
The Longest Tunnel, by Alan Burgess, was well worth reading. I found the book difficult to put down. His book is a well rounded story of the escape, its escapers, and the aftermath. Paul Brickhill's book, The Great Escape, goes into more detail of building the tunnel on a daily basis, but Burgess's book gives you a better overall look at what happened. Early in the book, there are a few chapters devoted to some of the major players; and it makes the book read somewhat disjointedly. Nevertheless, once one is past these short biographies, the book makes for compelling reading - especially his writing regarding the Gestapo pursuit and murder of the "terror flyers". Definitely a companion piece to Brickhill's book.

Best Book On the Great Escape I've Read Yet.
I learned about "The Great Escape" the way a lot of people did, I think: I watched the movie. While it's an entertaining film and one of my favorite WW II movies, when I discovered the events were true I knew I had to find out more. First I read Paul Brickhill's book on which the film is based and came away even more satisfied. Along the way I read "The Wooden Horse," which tells of ANOTHER escape attempt that happened at about the same time as the one depicted in Brickhill's book and the film.

While these offered a myriad of details regarding the escape itself and the events leading up to it, "The Longest Tunnel" instead concentrates more on the days after the breakout, the Gestapo reaction, the horrifying aftermath, and finally the search for justice as those who murdered The Fifty are hunted down. This is what drew me to this book, and now my sojurn into this fascinating chapter of WW II history is complete. If you can find this book, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

Comprehensive War Time Account
Reviews each aspect of the escape thoroughly from The Big X to the Compasss Makers. Also the descrbing of essential characters to the escape is superb! Burgess writes the book in such a way you almost become the character, feeling his pain and excitement. Joy and sadness. The Longest Tunnel is the best!

Why Do I Still Want?
Rabbi Plotkin's wisdom and sensitivity come through in each chapter. Whether dealing with parents or children, sickness or health, marriage or divorce, the voice of the Psalmist filtered through the lens of Jewish tradition and practice offers comfort and consolation in an all too fragmented world. For those intimidated by the BIG questions or intrigued by them this book offers something for everyone. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

A feel Good Experience
I was restintant in reading the book as I thought it was religious writing. But my wife read it and strongly suggested I read it. She was right it was uplifting and gave me a great deal to think about. I continue to re-read it when I need that feel good thought to bring me through day. A delightfull read and now I highly recommend it to others.

Wonderful
Although I don't usually read this type of book, it was presented to me and I was amazed how it touched me. The author's use of stories to convey the message of the psalmist was very effective in allowing me to relate to the material. His description of how the spiritual healing of psalms affected his life moved me deeply. I can see how people in life's transitions, such as divorce or illness, will find great comfort and consolation in this book. I recommend it to everyone.

Old family photos, described lovingly
Reading Lost Twin Cities feels like you've found that great uncle or aunt who can explain all the black and white family photos. This is a great example of the historian's art, a real case in which an author, by choosing a particular way to frame a set of information, calls a past world back to vivid life. It's a bittersweet pleasure to relive the life span of each historical building. Millet's approach is anecdotal, like that old relative's conversational voice.

Indirectly, this book also raises some natural questions about our country's urban development. The demise of the Twin Cities' streetcar system is particularly well described, for example. I could see a creative professor, teaching a lower level course on urban development, assigning this book as a text. (The same professor would also have students view "Chinatown.")

The book was also adapted for television by the local (Minneapolis and Saint Paul) public station. The program is quite entertaining, and catches the tone of the book pretty well.

Larry Millet has written a few Sherlock Holmes mysteries, largely as an excuse to present much of this same historical information in a livelier way. If you're considering which approach to take, stick to this. The mysteries are awful, extremely flat-footed and despiriting for an Arthur Conan Doyle fan; this is a wonderful book.

Excellent Find!
So far the best architectural book I've read, especially since I'm from the area of the subjects.

A great look back at how the Twin Cities once was
I have a newer version of this book, and I just wanted to say that it is a very, very interesting book. Even if you arn't originally from the Twin Cities this book is still very interesting to look at to see how things have changed over the years such as the cars, the billboards/advertisements, and the way people dressed. I think that this is definetly worth every cent, and I look forward for another edition to come out with different photos of streets in the Twin Cities.

Not for everyone
Read the workbook and found that although I'm sure that it is useful for others you really have to be of a christian faith to use this workbook. It does have many ideas and suggestions in terms of weight controll but I felt it emphasized to much on "God" and "problems with your family of orgin" and not enough on making us realized that we are in controll and we are responsible for our weight not anyone else. I would although recommend it to someone whose had a horrible childhood.

This Book Changed My Life
The Love Hunger Weight-Loss Workbook has literally changed my life. The workbook forced me to look into the issues behind Why I eat rather than What I eat. This book is an excellent tool for anyone looking to make permanent changes.

Highly recommend it ! Not a diet book-a behavior change!
The book is easy to read and understand, and easy to use -it has daily readings which help you stay focused. Excellent tips that I had actually never heard before. Explains all the inner workings of your diet behaviors. I highly recommend it, and I've already bought it for several friends too.

Macromedia Flash MX Components Most Wanted
Published in Paperback by glasshaus (September, 2003)

Average review score:

Nifty Components, Lacking in Real Technical Depth
"Flash MX Components Most Wanteed" is targeted towards designers and those that shy away from ActionScript. The book focuses on explanations of how to use each of the components -- not how they were created or the design choices made while building these sometimes extraordinarily complex components. Many of the components contained on the CD are quite useful, but I personally could have done without the "nifty graphics" and image manipulation components. It's nice to have detailed explanations of each of the available component parameters (kind of like a product manual), but the book left me wanting more about the hows and whys of creating solid, useful Flash MX components.

a darn good bargain
I still can't believe i only paid so little for this book, it's just awesome! I've been using Flash for a couple of years now, but only recently started getting into MX components - any designer (or even developer?) looking for efficient solutions should really look into using them. I'm at the point now where i'm having to reuse as much code/design elements as i can now because
work is just soooo busy, and with this book you get a cd containing 21 components (actually, there's even more than that if you count some of the neat experimental ones!). I'm not even gonna try and work out how much development time this cd will save me, but I can't advise it enough - i really hope these guys bring more of them out. To be honest i've only looked through about half of these components so far, but i'm still blown away -
check out tool tip, the dynamic text 'stringthing', and the XML/actionscript converter especially - i didn't even realize i needed these things until now! The chapter on the movie loader is just a killer too. And there are also more 'crazy-stoopid' ones, like pattern generators and image modulators. What can i say, buy it and hope these authors bring out a sequel! Tons of fully-documented components, tons of examples, i'm a happy
designer!

Great Book
Im coming from a unix/c background with over 10 years experience and I found this book to be really good introduction to Flash MX. Its written very clearly and concsicely and full of useful examples and great ideas. I got my project up and running very quickly with some very pleasing results. Keep up the good work boys!

This Book Is A Great Overview
I recommend this text in the management and supervisory classes I teach. It has a little bit of something about many topics which will assist supervisors and managers. And, to be quite honest, it provides enough buzz-words and buzz-concepts to allow the reader to sound up-to-date and knowledgeable in a discussion of organizational issues! The wide range of material in this book is what justifies an otherwise fairly steep price-tag.

Theory Explained!
This soft cover book provides information of management and leadership. Learning theories can be applied to business and education. Charts help to detail author's outline of organizational management. A worthy book for leaders.

communication
"What is the major barriers to effective communication. As an manager or supervisor, how to eliminate or reduce these barriers. Please use some examples in your workplace to illustrate your points.

Authors: Paul Wilmott, Jeff Dewynne, and Sam Howison
Amazon base price: $165.00
Average review score:

A good textbook for beginers.
This book is a very good textbook for beginers, especially mathematicians or physicists with PDE backgroud. Unfortunately, PDE is not a cure-all. It may be cumbersome in many cases. Like most research papers by the same authors, it lacks diversity.

Outstanding book!
An extremely well written, readable and thorough book. Worth every penny

Comprehensive, very readable guide to option pricing
This book offers very comprehensive review of a wide variety of different types of options and different approaches to evaludate the price.
