Innovative
When Switching On came out in 1981, it contained of the most innovative concepts in education -- that learning disabilities such as dyslexia, even serious cases, may not be lifelong and actually can be addressed and treated, with fantastic results, by going about educating the mind by first working with the body. In this book Dr. Paul Dennison gives unique exercises to aid anyone in accessing and speeding up mental processes by first doing simple physical movements. Drs Doman and Delcato originated the concept in the 1960s (when they discovered that crawling was essential for brain/body coordination and development) and Dr. Dennison has followed it through in a most remarkable way. Since this book was published, many advances have occurred in Dr. Dennison's research and I have taught his exercises and principles for years to musicians, actors, dancers, doctors as well as high school and college students, who all found the work to be indispensable. In my own life as a musician, chef and graphic designer I have found the exercises to be highly useful. If this subject interests you, I also recommend "How to Teach Your Baby to be Physically Superb" by Glenn Doman, and "Smart Moves -- Why Learning is Not All in Your Head" by Carla Hannaford, PhD.

Entertaining
Highly entertaining story for teenagers set in ancient Rome (story begins in 58 BCE), though adults will enjoy it as well-- I just reread it. Gaius Aemilius Durus is a "pretty man" of the equestrian class, whose dissolute life is spent-- or more accurately, wasted--on all-night drinking bouts and "calling on idle ladies of fashion-preferable married ones of easy virtue." Gaius is saved from all that by becoming friends with an older Roman, Tiberius Rufus. Tiberius and his mother are the embodiment of the traditional Roman virtues. Tiberius teaches Gaius a number of character-improving things. However, Gaius' father is murdered, the family fortune is lost, and Gaius goes to Gallia to join Julius Caesar's legions. Fortunately, Tiberius' lessons stand Gaius in good stead, and he has a number of adventures in Gallia and Brittania.

I read one of the other book in this series, "With the Eagles" when I was in junior high school-- my father gave me the copy he had as a kid and I loved it. When I was in my freshman year of high school, I discovered the rest of the series in the library and enjoyed them just as much.

For those who are recommending the series only for boys, I want to point out that I'm female (though I had a particular interest in ancient Rome as a kid). For what it's worth, "Swords in the North," written in 1935, is a bit more female-friendly than "With the Eagles" which was written in 1929: it actually has some female characters who are more than incidental to the plot.

from the illustrator of the kit...
Hi! I'm Cari Buziak, and I did the illustrations for the Book of Kells Rubber Stamp Kit. One of the most important things we tried to do with the stamps in this kit was make sure they'd print nice and cleanly, so they wouldn't close up when stamped. I use rubber stamps myself, and it drives me nuts when you stamp a design and it becomes a big smear! So most importantly I think I can say we did a great job on the stamps themselves.
When my product samples arrived, I was really eager to see how the booklet turned out, as that was one part that I never got to see the progress of. The book is GORGEOUS! They used metallic gold ink not only on the book cover, but also throughout every page, and it's just lovely with the rich purple they use in partner with it. The book gives a nice introduction to the Book of Kells and it's history, and as well goes over the history behind the different types of designs and imagery you see in Celtic art. I think with the kit you'll be able to have not only a bit of info on this ever-so-cool manuscript, but also be able to do some nifty things with the stamps in your projects. One thing I get great feedback on are gift tags I make from my stamps... I use decorative paper or handmade paper, stamp the Celtic designs down in black or gold stamp ink, and then flick some more gold ink across the whole page for a sparkle effect. Usually use Winsor and Newtons gold ink and a toothbrush for the flicking. Then I cut out my gift tags using decal scissors, and punch holes in the top.. .they're so beautiful! I've sold hundereds in sets of 5 at crafts shows... they're gorgeous! I hope you enjoy our kit too... all feedback welcome! - Cari

Buying this book is a good way to start building a library of scores. You get a fair bit of the basic repertoire in one fell swoop, as it were. Unlike as in certain other Norton anthologies, whole works are represented here, and they aren't cluttered with a primary melodic line trace. It's odd that Beethoven's third symphony and Tchaikovsky's fourth symphony are always studied in music history courses. Why not Beethoven's and Tchaikovsky's fifths? Too popular? Too good? Oh, well, you can pick up these scores later. I also recommend "Pentatonic Scales for the Jazz Rock Keyboardist" by Jeff Burns.

A Masterful End to the 20th's Cent.'s best Theo. System
Life, what is universal to us all, and God's presence throughout through his Divine Spirit, the Spiritual Community arising out of this life, and the Kingdom which rules its being through God's purity of fulfillment and vast embracing grace; all of these are beautifully portrayed in this work. It is hard to underrate this work and exaggerate its importance. Though it is not complete in the sense of lacking nothing, it opens the doors for exploring answers that perplex and confront Christianity vigorously demanding answers today.
