An easy to use, comprehensive text.
As a general practitioner who uses this book to answer fairly routine questions about care and treatment of children, I recommend it highly. It is easy to read and well organized. It openly acknowledges areas of ambiguity or controversy in the field and gives what appears to be a balanced view of the issues. I feel very comfortable relying on this text for most of my pedodontic questions.

No Bleeding Chunks
This is a first attempt to establish a canon of a hitherto unrecognized body of work, the literature of food and drink. It contains most of the authors you would nominate as classics, and has long selections from their work - no snippets, odd paragraphs, or bleeding chunks torn from the body of the work. Everything in the volume is satisfyingly complete. It also has a few surprises - the classics of the future.

An excellent addition...
This 02/03 yearbook, which is designed to keep the biannual Penguin Guide to Classical Music, is similar to its excellent forebears, and even has some improvements. Of particular note is that DVDs are now included with CDs in the ratings rather than being segregated in its own section in back. I would like to see Penguin continue this format when it publishes its 04 guide next year.

Visit the year 1846 from the safety of your armchair
It's 1846 and you find yourself in Concord, Massachusetts. Who's there? And what's it like to live there? Those questions and more are answered by Paul Brooks in this fine book. He uses a humanities approach to uncover the history of culture, politics, education, literacy, and women's lives in this one particular area of New England. And you won't run into just the usual familiar families -- the Emersons, Hawthornes, Thoreaus, and Alcotts -- but will learn of other folks of Concord as well: farmer George Minott, lawyer Samuel Hoar, doctor Josiah Bartlett, and constable Sam Staples, to name a few. One chapter is devoted entirely to the operation of Brook Farm, a utopian community founded by Dr. George Ripley that was beginning to struggle by the year in question. Photos of key people and period illustrations augment the very readable text. If you like pre-Civil War American history or are enamored with any of the authors mentioned above, pick this title up at the nearest used bookstore. You won't be disappointed.

This excellent book is a must for anyone interested in the remaining hilltribes of S.E. Asia. Very well researched and photographed. The information on the hilltribe jewelry is the most comprehensive I have ever seen.

The Perception of Risk (Risk, Society and Policy Series)

Risk book purchase without risk
How often have I wished I had the publications of particularly productive scientists bound together in one document. Despite modern IT-technique, which increases the availability of such publications, an appropriate book is still superior. Now there is such a book for those who are interested in risk from a psychological point of view. Its title is: "The Perception of Risk" and it contains 26 of the most important publications by Paul Slovic from the last 25 years. It starts with an introduction in which Paul summarizes and gives his perspectives on his papers.

No one who has come across the term risk perception can have missed Paul Slovic's name. As one of the leading scientists in the field of risk perception, Paul has covered large areas and tackled various problems in order to show how we view, react to, and handle situations and problems related to what we in common language call risk.

To call him one of the founders of the psychometric paradigm is too plain a characterization of the scientific contribution of Paul Slovic. The psychometric methodology is just the means he has used to study how human beings perceive, judge and make decisions about risk in various situations. He has introduced psychological aspects of risk into natural sciences, where risk earlier has been considered as a numerical and objectively assessable quantity. Now physicists, chemists, and even engineers realize that risk perception cannot be ignored and is influenced by many factors (e.g. voluntariness, familiarity, dread, equity) relating to risk and how risk is described. For those who want to make risk comparisons, inform people about risks or do anything else regarding risk, it is necessary to be familiar with risk perception.

With his great openness, Paul has been able to collaborate with scientists from many different areas, both scientifically and geographically. In this way he has improved and enriched his work with practical aspects in many domains, particularly radioactivity and use of chemicals. Therefore it possible for most scientists to find in this book interesting reading related to their own problems. The book only contains about an eighth (but a representative sample) of Paul's total scientific production. As the papers are ordered chronologically, it is easy to follow the development in time of different ideas and conclusions and to see how later studies derive from earlier ones in a logical way. Thus, in the two last chapters of the book, the ideas and views on risk are further expanded and offer exciting vistas for the future. In the same way as many of Paul's earlier ideas have been accepted and continued by later researchers, his recent views about "the affect heuristic" most certainly will be the subject for many future scientific publications.

Review from the Publisher
This is a saintly biography full of charm and delightful surprises. About Father Lamy, his bishop said, "I have in my diocese another Curé of Ars." This holy priest had visions of the past and of the future, of Our Lord, the Blessed Mother, St. Joseph, the Angels - even Lucifer. The accomplishments of his life are an amazing proof what one priest can do. Profound and enlightening are his thoughts on religious subjects. He prayed the Rosary almost continually, slept but one or two hours a night, could smell sin even through a penitent's perfume, conversed regularly with his guardian angel, effected miracles, and made prophecies. He was a priest to rag pickers and school children, and his account of the times and life around the village where he spent his childhood is more Catholic than on any spot on earth today. Great inspiration! 224pp. PB. Imprimatur.

Great Book
This was a really cool book. Basically it's about a girl who is expected to be the most perfect, popular girl in town. But in reality, she's starting to hate it, and starts hanging out with the "Christians", the outsiders. She is saved, and shares it with her whole town, and pretty soon they're all changing. Her brother refuses to see the truth, no matter how much they try to help him. This was a really good book, for nonChristians and Christians alike!
