Ordinary detective and ordinary sex
If you are interested by Domination/Submission or SM, forget this book. If you like stories of private eyes intermingled with sex, rather try the series of novels with the character Alex Kane of John Preston.

Definitely For Adults Only as the by-line suggests
For a first glimpse into the 'Idol' world of homo-erotica this book could be seen as a must. Although a sequal (to Chains of Deceit) the reader loses nothing from missing the first novel.

Although the ending is slightly disappointing the levels and variations on the sexual scenes should more than make up for it.

I read the entire novel in one train journey, and bought another from the series for my return.

Collecting Classic Bolt Action Military Rifles

Author: Paul Scarlata

Collectible price: $42.31

Broad but shallow
This book is a broad and moderately detailed history of the development of the military bolt action. For someone just getting interested in the subject, it would provide a useful general guide, but it lacks sufficient detail and depth to be useful as a reference for anyone other than the most casual collector. In fact, I was quite dissapointed by the paucity of information related to actually collecting these rifles, given that that is what the book purports to be. If the book were titled as a history it would certainly have fulfilled my expectations, but even with that it is too expensive for what it delivers. I returned mine.

Collecting Classic Bolt Action Military Rifles
I couldn't disagree more with the earlier review. This book is quality work. Mr. Scarlata does a good job describing the primary weapons of the major and minor powers of the late 19th to the middle 20th century. He then goes on to describe the major variants of each type. As Scarlata desribes the firearms, he points out with word and photo the unique features that he and, hence, you will find interesting. I almost didn't buy the book because of the earlier review. I'm glad I did. If you want to know everything about every variation of the US Krag get Brophy's book. If you want good meaty info on most of the world's bolt rifles here is the place to start. By the time you need more information on your rifle of interest, just flip to the comprehensive bibliography in the back of the book.

College Majors and Careers: A Resource Guide for Effective Life Planning

Too brief to be useful
If I had flipped through this book first, I wouldn't have bought it. For each major the author gives a one-paragraph description, a list of related occupations, a list of skills necessary and a list of "values and attributes", and other related information such as related extra curricular activities. There is a glossary at the end of the book to further explain the cryptic words in the occupations, skills and values list with 2 to 3-line sentences. For example, in describing "Marketing and Distribution", the "value and attribute" list is: achievement, prestige, wealth, desire for recognition and appreciation from others, creatitivy, outgoing, polite and friendly attitude, desire to serve and please others, tendency to be alert and ambitious, competitiveness and flexibility, energy, patience, poise, neatness, and self confidence.

As you can see, the content is extremely brief and most of it is just common sense.

The way that majors are listed is also not quite complete and logical (arranged alphebatically).

For a much better reading, I recommend "The College Majors Handbook : The Actual Jobs, Earnings, and Trends for Graduates of 60 College Majors", ISBN 1563705184. It has much better narative descriptions.

An excellent resource for the college bound.
This book is packed full of information - I wish I could have benefited from it years ago, before attending college. It categorizes by field, gives a description, then lists numerous related occupations and training required for each. Additionally, it includes related activities, skills, organizations, etc. Salary information is not included -which, in my opinion, makes it an even more effective resource for finding ones genuine career interests.

The worst computer book ever written
This maybe the worst computer book ever written. The authors have a way of making even the simplest things complex. I surely can not recommend this book.

Very well written! Worth the price.
This book is massive and the price tag is a bit heavy as well, but trust me, it is worth the price. I'm a VB6 developer trying to make the transition to VB.NET. I analyzed a number of different books, including those published by Microsoft Press, and ultimately decided on this one for its thoroughness. Overall, the book is very well written, organized quite logically, and doesn't miss any details. On top of that, the bonus CDs you get with this "complete course" over just the book alone are incredible! I found most of the audio commentary extremely dry, and didn't really add much to the printed material, but the extra exercises and having all the code and answers right inline with the text was amazing.

The exercises at the end of each lesson are extremely challenging and really sound down the concepts into your mind. For example, on the chapter dealing with arrays, including sorting and searching, one of the exercises is to rewrite the QuickSort algorithm that Microsoft uses natively in the Array.Sort method. This exercise really impressed on me how to get the most out of recursive functions, and how to build efficient procedures.

Currently, I'm only about 400 pages into this 1500+ book, but I'm eagerly looking forward to finishing it. To be honest, I think this book is better than taking an instructor-led course. I can't wait for Advance VB.NET to come out from Deitel so I can tackle that as well.

Bottom line, buy this complete course. You won't regret it.

Questionable Customer Review
The first review of this book is by one of the authors and not a customer. It seems a little self-serving if you ask me and should not be listed as a "customer" review.

A note from the authors
The Comprehensive Russian Computer Dictionary is intended to be a reference for computer professionals, translators, students -- anyone who works with computers using English and Russian languages.

This dictionary distinguishes itself by: a) comprehensive, yet concise, modern lexicon; b) inclusion, in a single volume, of complete English-Russian and Russian-English sections; c) linear-alphabetical structure with multiple cross-references to contextually related translations.

Numerous new terms are included in the dictionary -- terms that did not exist, particularly in Russian, as recently as a year ago. Russian entries include both, native expressions and widely accepted Cyrillic transliterations of foreign terms. Preference is always given to usable translations readily applicable to written and spoken word. Brief explanations are provided to clarify otherwise ambiguous translations.

For the convenience of our readers, the latest version of the dictionary database can be accessed on line at the same website as e-mail address.

If your course requires it, nothing you can do
I had to use this textbook for a class, which you probably do to. So you probably have to buy this one. It was okay, not hard to read, but I won't be keeping it as a reference work. The authors definitely have an agenda, promoting certain kinds of nutrition over others with very little reasoning, also seems to act like a lot of alternative medicine couldn't possible work even when there are studies to the contrary. I guess it handles the rudiments of biology okay. I will be selling this when I'm finished with this semester.

Oh, and there appears to be both a hardcover and a paperback. I bought the paperback used, and it seems to have matched perfectly with the hardcover. Never even used the CD.

Very easy read
This book was very easy to read, I read the whole thing in a little over a week. Highly reccommended.

Conceptual Physics: Practicing Physics

Useless without the solutions.
The idea of a workbook to be used in addition to the textbook seemed like a great idea. Too bad it was so poorly implemented. There are no solutions to any of the problems. To my way of thinking, not to provide positive feedback to the student makes the thing useless. If your instructor does not use the workbook or review it in class DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!

What about studying?
Why people just wait for solutions? What about thinking? Discussing with others? with your instructor? It is called "Practicing Physics". Not "Reading solutions to problems". Even though your instructor does not use the book, you can discuss the questions. I am sure that they will be happy when s/he sees that you are trying to solve a physics problem, you are PRACTICING... For teachers; there are lots of sources in the book. You can use them to enrich your instructions.

Mockery
I think that no person that even thinks of him/herself as being a christian should study this 'bible'. In my opinion it is a very huge mockery of Christ and his life and doings here on earth. I have not personally read the book, but i have heard about it. And as a christian i don't even think it should be thought of like that book puts it, much less on shelves for anybody to be influenced by it.

A must read for the thinking person!

The author must have a relative in the publishing business
This one will not keep you up at night unless you teach writing. The awkward constructions and clumsy exposition look like the kind of work which would be handed back by your Composition 101 professor. I'm still not sure how this PR man turned alleged detective found out whodunit. The ending was thoroughly unsatisfying. The willing suspension of disbelief just never happened. What can I say? Don't bother!

Bert Swain is on the case so rest easy
Bert Swain is a public relations specialist at Westside General Hospital who has solved two previous murder cases at the hospital. His reputation for sleuthing is well known throughout the hospital, but for once this backfired. Dr. T. Gordon Stokes, the director, forces Bert to help his sister, Anne De Villiers, who has been threatened by an unknown assailant. Reluctantly, Bert accepts the case. He soon visits an ecological think tank where Anne is the chief. Suspects spring up all over the place, including staff members and opponents to the institution's research and position of several controversial social issues. As he struggle to contend with his fiftieth birthday and his teenaged daughter suddenly assisting him on his investigation, Bert also must deal with increasing violence and the potential use of deadly force. If he fails to uncover the identity of the culprit(s), someone(s) will be soon dead. The third Bert Swain detective story is an interesting tale that will thrill fans of the amateur sleuth investigation sub-genre. The mystery is okay, but it is Bert struggling to contend with a major mid-life crisis ( turning fifty) that turns COUNT YOUR ENEMIES into a novel, way above the typical sub-genre tales. Crash Course in C

A bad way to begin learning a programming language.
Like the title suggests, the book is fast paced. It quickly goes through basic principles and then gets into heavier data structures. Inadequate time is spent on the harder material, and there are no exercises anywhere. It is not possible to gain a working knowledge of C from this book.

Good for a quick reference library
I've used this book in preparing a three day "crash course" in C. I found the reference material invaluable when creating my presentation. The easy access to information and the clear, concise descriptions were just what I needed when preparing slides. I would recommend this book to any moderately experienced C programmer who has to teach C to others. I have also encountered one of my peers who used this book to learn C and he found it extremely helpful in learning C from the ground up.
