Solid, solid, solid. This book is very resourceful. I have never picked up one of these "Dummies" books before but got this one as a gift. It covers enough about investing in stocks and the securities industry in general so as to ease the befuddled neophyte. For the rudiments, start here. Then afterwards, you can move on to that other junk promising you the secrets of Wall Street.

STOP HOMOCYSTEINE through the METHYLATION PROCESS: The Key to controlling homocysteine and SAM and their effect on heart disease, aging, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, AIDS and other diseases

Book is very well written and easy to understand
I started reading my copy on a TWA flight from St. Louis to Sacramento and finished somewhere over western Nevada (a little over 3 hours).

This book is very well written and easy to understand. I really liked the "Take Home Messages" and the detailed information that explained the messages.

The real eye opener in Stop Homocysteine is the enormous size and complexity of the methylation process. Lowering homocysteine levels through methylation is only one part of this amazing biochemical story. I am a victim of cardiovascular disease and it is a very important process in my life, but I am also nearing retirement and the diseases of aging are gaining prominence.

The back cover of Stop Homocysteine sums up the whole book when it states: Methylation is a whole body process. Learn how it can be used to:

. Help the Heart . Heal the Liver . Improve your mood . Strengthen your bones . Prevent Cancer . Improve Antioxidant Activity . Live Longer . S! low Aging

And people, you can take that message home.

Stories and Parables for Preachers and Teachers

A Collection of Stories for Preachers
This is a small collection of brilliant stories, 101 of them classified under 4 categories.Short narratives are very valuable for preachers and teachers in bringing home the point and Fr Paul Wharton as a preacher and collector of stories knows it too well. He has done a service to humanity by bringing out this collection so that these anecdotes and stories are available at ready reference. Under 'Acknowledgements' he gives the sources where these stories originally appeared. I have found the book very useful.

California through children's eyes
This book intrigued me because I didn't grow up in California, and so only know it as an adult. It's a wonderful collection of tales ranging geographically from the redwoods to Mexico, historically from the old west to present day, and topically from fun adventures to environmental concerns to adolescent insights. Though sold as a children's book, this collection of short stories and poetry will rekindle memories of discovery and growth in readers a "few" years past childhood. Had I read it as a pre-teen, it would have sparked my interest in the "California Coast" for all the right reasons.

Strayers from Sheol
Once again, Ash-Tree press has resurrected a set of ghost stories that should not have gone out-of-print. I read some Somerset Maugham stories at the same time I was reading this collection, and there were many moments when the voices of the authors sounded the same. Wakefield is very polished in his story-telling. This is not his complete works, but the contents of this book may be his best. "The Triumph of Death" will have to be read twice to catch all of the subtle hints left before the climatic death scene (it's alwasy great when the author can close a story with the climax - no "wrapping up" needed). "The Middle Drawer" is a predictable murder/ghost story, but the telling of the misery of the protagonist is fantastic. The book is rounded out with 4 never before published stories. These are as good or better than the more well-known stories preceding them. "Appointment With Fire" is a story of criminals getting their justice that rivals Robert Bloch's best work. The price is worth the possession of some of the finest ghost stories of the early 20th century. You won't find any of these stories outside of a few ancient Weird Tales anthologies. And who likes to buy an anthology only to find they already own half the stories inside ?

Stride, the Music of Fats Waller

Well worth looking for
Although difficult to track down, Machlin's tome on this under-appreciated (and delightfully entertaining) jazz musician/songwriter/composer is an excellent exploration. Machlin takes one through the music of Waller thoroughly. A must for any fans of Waller's work.

A very interesting book
"The Structure of the Universe" is a very good book with a lot of interesting information. It presents many of the intruiging questions that cosmologists ask today, over such topics as dark matter, the structure of the universe, and the expansion of the Universe. Through many graphs and charts, they show many of the processes that happen today and also explain possible outcomes of the Universe. It is a very good book for any novice who would like to know a little bit about cosmology.

A Rewalding Experience
If you have a great love for Impressionist painting and want to know about the artists and the people that surrounded them you will enjoy this book. Mr. Rewald had previously written very in-depth books concerning the histories of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. This book is a collection of essays concerning the Impressionists and does repeat some of the information contained in Rewald's "History Of Impressionism" but also gives a more detailed look at some topics in that book, such as Cezanne's relationship with his father and his friendships with the collector Victor Chocquet and with his fellow (and pretty much unknown) artist Achille Emperaire. There is also an essay about Paul Durand-Ruel, the dealer who stuck with the Impressionists through the early years when you basically couldn't even give their stuff away and there is a short essay about the oldest (and least well-known) Impressionist, Camille Pissarro. Pissarro pretty much lived a life of poverty until he was in his 60's but had a very fulfilling artistic and personal life (he was happily married and had many children) and his modesty and easygoing personality enabled him to get along with his fellow artists and even to be somewhat of a mentor to the notoriously difficult Cezanne. I would say that this book is not for the person who is going in with no previous knowledge of the artists and the movement, but if you already know a bit and want to learn more or if you have read other books by Mr. Rewald you will not be disappointed. For those of you who are new to Mr. Rewald I think you will enjoy his style of writing. He writes with the descriptive flair of a novelist and he does not use art-world graduate school style jargon. If you really want to immerse yourself in the world of these great artists I would suggest you also check out Mr. Rewald's "History Of Impressionism" and his excellent biography of Cezanne.

Studies in Paul's Epistles
Published in Hardcover by Kregel Publications (June, 1984)
Author: Frederic Louis Godet
Amazon base price: $15.99
Average review score:

Good introductory to Pauline theology
This study takes Godet's thoughts on the New Testament and narrows the scope specifically to Paul and his doctrinal stances. It's more of a generalized summary on Paul's letters, and doesn't get very deep or overly technical. It's a good resource for introductory level Bible students looking to go deeper into the Word. I recommend this with his other study on the New Testament, which covers tother themes and the four Gospels. Both are great suppliments for busy pastors.

For the serious study on Paul, Godet's commentaries on 1 St Corinthians and Romans are excellent, but are decidely for those with an aptitude for Greek.
