Civil War Medicine: An Illustrated History
Published in Paperback by Cedarwood Pub (October, 1998)
Author: Mark, J. Schaadt
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $19.00
Average review score:

Overview
Schaadt provides the reader with a great introduction into the field of medicine during the Civil War years. From the pages, one is able to further pursue additional works to examine the growth of the field during the time period. Well done.

An ` Illustrated` History - Very apt title !
Knowing my great interest in The US Civil War and Civil war medicine I was given this book by my brother and thought it just another title to add to the stack I already had on the subject. How wrong could I be! `Illustrated` was certainly the description for Dr Schaadt`s enlightening book. Suddenly a light went on and after reading at least a half dozen books, including old standards like Doctors in Blue, at last, I have found one that you don`t have to be a surgeon or a statistician to understand. The writing is lucid, the drawings fascenating and one can view the photographs without the use of a microscope. Unlike the photos in other Civil War medicine books they actually show the instruments almost lifesize. It gives a real feel as to how it must have been to actually hold what must have appeared to the patients as instruments of torture. Questions I have often asked after reading other books have here been answered and answered so simply. For the reader merely interested in this aspect of the Civil War or for the serious Civil War student I would highly recommend Dr Schaadt`s book over all others currently available. His great respect for the surgeons who risked their lives and their health is evident on every page, and I challenge any reader not to share that respect by the time they have reached the final page. Indeed in the prologue we learn of a civil war surgeon who died on the battlefield at Shiloh while tending the wounded. At the back of the book we read that the author is practising Emergency Medicine in Illinois, it is not difficult therefore to imagine Dr Schaadt himself wearing the insignia of an army surgeon and saving lives on a 19th Century battlefield. Well done. I only hope this book gets the readership it deserves.

Life Changing!
Every now and then you pick up a book that changes the way you see your world. Clear Horizon was that kind of book for me. Clear Horizon, along with the seminar and work book, opened my eyes to possibilities that I hadn't even realized existed for me. It helped me set goals that would take me in the direction I wanted to go in life, and then gave me the tools to see those goals through to successful completion. This book gave me confidence, and helped me apply a whole new way of thinking to every aspect of my life, from business to personal. I highly recommend Clear Horizon to anyone wanting to take control of his or her life.

Life Changing!
Every once in a while you come across a book that takes you by surprise and changes the very way you look at your world. "Clear Horizon" and the accompanying seminar affected me that way. "Clear Horizon" opened my eyes and my mind to understanding what I want from life, and then gave me the tools I needed to set goals and to realized those goals. I see possibilities where before they seemed not to exist. I realize the choice available to me that I never realized before. Read this book. It might just change your life.

Great Book !
Mark Lichterman wrote an excellent book. I truly believe that Disney or Pixar studios should do an animation movie of the book. It would make a great film that would apeal to both adults and children. I hope he writes more books in the future.

Great book
You can really feel like your part of the story. The people in the book are so real.

Also, it wasn't hard to use. I just clicked on a little icon after inserting the cd into my computer. I think this is a good e-book for people who are new to their computers.

The author Mark lictermin (spelling?) is on my list of good authors. Not too many make that list.

Concise, yet comprehensive sytematic approach to bioethics
Dr. Jonsen is one the nation's germinal thinkers in the field of bioethics. Through his experience and associations at several of the renowned medical academic institutions in this coutnry he sets forth a clear systematic approach to problems in bioethics. This includes a review of his "4-box" method for approaching ethical problems and then reviews basic ethical principles as well as legal definitions. His approach to clincal dilemmas provides a refreshing analytical process for dilineating issues and conflicts.

This is an excellent resource for those in medical settings.
The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features. Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics. I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine. --Mary Kay Buike, MSW, ACSW; Oncology Social Worker and member of a hospital Bioethics Committee

Not just a pricing catalog.
Coincraft has a series of catalogs and related information. This particular Catalog as described in the title is more than just a price guide. It features:
•Hammered and milled patterns
•Collecting Hints for each series
•Quick-Index-Charts
•Over 700 pages, with illustrations & line drawings
•Over 50,000 prices
•Numismatic Glossary

•Mysteries explained
•Index of Engravers & Designers of milled coins
•Comprehensive general index

It is time to dive into collection and what can be more intriguing than the coins that you see and hear about in old English movies. Add to that coins that represent historical events and people. It is always safer to have some for knowledge and this is the book to give it.

Has some very good features
While it is not as comprehensive as the "Seaby" catalogue, it does have some very useful features such as the rarities of the different mints and line drawings of the many different types of the Henry III, Edward I and earlier, making them easier to identify.

It does not include the Anglo-Saxon coins of before 1066, but is a very helpful resource for any English collector.

I believe Harry he is a great writer! Very underrated. You will read just the first few stories and be amazed that you have not heard of him. "Dark Eye" is a haunting story.

Petrakis' flair for the short story is fantastic!
The stories are ripe with the feeling and culture of the greek movement to America.

Next best thing to going there
Charles Calhoun's MAINE is a departure from most travel guides. Rather than just pages and pages of lists of motels, restaurants, and things to see, Calhoun focuses on the state's people (past and present), natural history, and state-of-mind. Instead of simply an address and phone number for the famous L. L. Bean's (outdoor outfitters, for example, Calhoun gives us several pages, including the story of the founder of the company.

The book opens with a chapter entitled "Learning Maine" and is organized geographically into nine main sections which cover the entire state. The final chapter, "Practical Information" gives all the usual, plus "A Dozen Fun Places to Eat" and antiquarian booksellers. Scattered throughout the book are literary excerpts and topical essays by authors such as May Sarton, John McPhee, and Longfellow. There are maps, reproductions of period art, and plenty of gorgeous color photos. Whether the reader is planning a trip to Maine or merely wishes an intriguing armchair journey, this guide is a must.

An excellent book to take along with you during your travels to Maine. The photos in this book are simply beautiful! The photographer, Thomas Mark Szelog actually lives in the lighthouse on the cover!! I was lucky enough to meet him and he was kind enough to show me some of his photgraphs. Absolutely beautiful work. This is a great book and I highly recommend it when you travel down east!

Vintage Mark Twain
There has never existed a more witty writer than Samuel Clemens, our beloved Mark Twain. Everything the man has ever written, particularly as age sharpened his sense of irony, carries a most suave and acute style of point-of-view. Every observation, every poignancy, every comment he makes is exquisitely nailed down with a genius's flair for words. While some readers of today may find some of his essays antiquated and over-worded, all I can say is that this man possessed the finest intellect ever granted to a human being and was able to produce it on paper with a resounding flourish. Not to mention the finest humor also.

I have read most books by and about Mark Twain and was thrilled to recently come across this collection of his works. Out of the essays he has written in this volume, "In Defense of Harriet Shelley" is my favorite. This essay is Mark's review of Professor Dowden's book titled "Life of Shelley". Ordinarily, I would never have heard of the poet Shelley's adultery while married to his first wife, Harriet, nor even cared if I had, but Mark, who reviewed many books of his era (including his hilarious upbraiding on the grammatically incorrect Fenimore Cooper's novels!) put it all in perspective for me - brought it right up to present time and concern, so to speak. Every sentence in that particular essay is loaded with vintage Twain-ism and he does so rightly defend Harriet that when you finish reading, you want to print a copy of it and post it everywhere in your own defense of Harriet as well! At least I felt that way.

Other essays of note in this book are "Saint Joan of Arc", "Mental Telepathy" and "The Death of Jean", the latter particularly profound since Mark writes about the death of his daughter, Jean, who while visiting him, dies as a result of an epileptic stroke. The bereaved father began this essay on the eve of her death and finished it within scant days; thus this writing displays a desperate immediacy to it - outpourings of a heart lamenting it's disbelief and shock. We see and feel with the man here in his most vulnerable state, hoping perhaps to find in his own writing, some link to his now-dead child.

This volume of essays was published in 1963 and I would love to see it reprinted again, updated with a catchy illustrated front cover, etc, (costs be damned) just to lure in a generation of readers who otherwise might never come across it.

Side-splittingly hilarious, yet...thoughtful.
Anyone who has read Twain will know that he has an unusually sharp wit and is one of the funniest men of ANY century; however, I wager that most do not perceive his grasp of issues important regardless of time, particularly the relationship of man to his (hypothetical) superiors, and human nature in general. With this book the best of both his worlds may be enjoyed: his humorous stance is in full effect in many of his hilarious essays; but the introspective character of his inner debates about man and God are also here preserved. It is recommended for anyone who wishes to see both sides of Twain's literature, and get a few belly laughs and deep thoughts while at it.
