Astonishing book
Very good book.
It has a lot of exercises and many useful day-to-day expressions that you can use in everyday life.
The layout of the book uses a very hands-on approach because all the exercises deal with examples that we can relate to.
I look forward to buy the next book in the series.
The only reason for the 4-star rating is because the cover and paper the text is written on is not of very good quality, that is, it looks and feels like a pulp magazine !!!

High Time: The Life and Times of Howard Marks

Lessons In The Drug Trade
The first, and possibly hardest descision that a biographer must make is to choose someone new and interesting to write about. All too often the focus of a biographer's gaze falls upon well established household names such as political 'heroes' or Silver Screen 'personalities'.

Praise must go therefore to David Leigh for the subject of his biography: Howard Marks; an international drug runner, who naturally, due to the nature of his business does everything he can NOT to become a household name. Leigh follows Marks' career in the drug trade from its very beginning, in the 70s, through to its present day conclusion. Writing with a clarity of prose and an intensity of purpose that creates a breath-taking pace and begs not to be put down. Leaving questions of morality up to the individual reader Leigh shows Marks as human, intelligent, fallable, but most of all likeable. A man with whom you could comfortably have a drink.

Leigh didn't have to work hard to make a story out of his chosen subject material: it is a compelling story by its self. But he did need to steer his research and keep it capped. (He has to cover nearly 30 years worth of material, with each drug run having fascinating complications and intricate requirements) And for this too, congratulations are due. He handles the subject well, informing the reader without preaching; the end result being a thoroughly good biography.

His Name Is Not God

His Name So Sweet
His Name is Not God delves into the difference between a title and a name from a biblical perspective. The book expounds on the theory that there is a difference between someone's title and someone's name. In the Old Testament, people referred to God through his attributes such as Jehovah Jireh (the Lord Provides) or Jehovah Shalom (the Lord is my peace). It is in the New Testament, where Christians become to know God as a name because of their personal relationship with his son, Jesus.

I found this book to be insightful to help a person to fully understand his or her Christian journey. This book would be helpful to a Christian seeking a closer walk with the Lord. A new members class of a church would find this book helpful to introduce the newly "saved" to building a relationship with Jesus.

Historical Commentary on Galatians

A Classic Historical Commentary
Like many of Paul's other letters, the Epistle to the Galatians spoketo an immediate controversy...Sir William Ramsay's commentaryaddresses the resulting historical perplexities: When was the letter written? To whom was it addressed? What were the precise points in controversy? Who were the opponents of Paul's views? How were the issues actually resolved by the infant Church? Or did they, as 19th Century German scholarship posited, lead to a fatal breach between Jewish and Gentile forms of Christianity?

Ramsay (1851-1939) was well-equipped to delve into this area by virtue of his extensive knowledge of the history of Asia Minor, to which he devoted his archeological career. Though the present work is now a century old, it has never been superseded as a source of background information essential to seeing the epistle in historical context.

Ramsay's most noteworthy contribution was to make a powerful case for the view that the "Galatians" whom Paul exhorted were inhabitants of the cities of Phrygia and Lycaonia (in South Central Anatolia) that he had proselytized during his first missionary journey... Ramsay's "South Galatian" hypothesis has remained a minority opinion, though a review of mainstream commentaries suggests that the "North Galatian" alternative rests largely on prejudice... particular, it is not easy to fit a Pauline visit to North Galatia into the narrative of Acts, and many modernist commentators, convinced that Acts is of little historical value, seem to see that as a point against Ramsay... Ramsay is normally a clear writer, but this particular book suffers from the fact that injuries sustained in an accident prevented him from making final revisions to the manuscript. As a result, the discussion is in places disjointed. Also, the reader will need to refer frequently to the text of Acts in order to grasp the argument fully.

This commentary is not, in short, for casual reading, nor will it profit those whose interest lies solely in the doctrine of Galatians rather than its place in history. But for those who study it with care, it will offer abundant fruit. END

Context is everything
I found Mr. Gelernter's book in the public library as I was researching a project. After reading it, I thought it was so useful that I decided to buy it for my own library.

Many art and architecture books are just recitations of dry facts, dates and theories, with no historical or sociological context. Not so Gelernter's "A History of American Architecture."

The correlation of buildings with their context, and the inclusion of early Native American architecture, make this a thought provoking introduction to the history of architecture in America.

Vivid portraits
This is an excellent set of personal reminiscences from some of the Jews who escaped Nazi Germany from the early 1930s up to beginning of the 1940s. The stories are so incredibly vivid. What really struck me was the incredible difficulties they faced - the perverse Nazi bureaucracy, friends who turned their back, the loss of both material goods and the psychological loss of family and friends in Germany, and what happened when they fled Europe . This book doesn't stop at the end of the WW2 - it examines the impact of exile, and the cost of making new lives in countries when all you escaped with was your life. Any person interested in background reading on WW2, and a vivid picture of what it was really like for the Jews, would find this a worthwhile book.

HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS
HAVING BEEN RIDING ON MY OWN FOR 25 YEARS AND NEVER TAKING ANY JUMPING LESSONS, I WAS THRILLED TO COME ACROSS THIS BOOK FROM ONE OF THE MASTERS. THE AUTHOR HAS MANAGED TO SIMPLIFY THE SEEMINGLY COMPLICATED WORLD OF DISTANCES, FORWARDNESS, BALANCE, ETC.. I TRIED SOME OF HIS CONCEPTS ON 2 OF MY OLDER HORSES AND A YOUNG THOROUGHBRED OFF THE TRACK. I WAS THRILLED WITH THE RESULTS IN ALL 3 OF THEM AND OF THE INCREASED CONFIDENCE I FELT ESPECIALLY SINCE I AM SUCH A TIMID RIDER. MY OLDER HORSES FELT MORE BALANCED AND MY YOUNGER ONE FELT LIKE A 'PRO' THE FIRST TIME WE EVER ATTEMPTED A SMALL JUMP TOGETHER. I WISH I HAD HAVE READ THIS BOOK MANY YEARS AGO WHEN THE 'FEAR FACTOR' WASN'T AN ISSUE. AS IN ALL EQUINE TRAINING BOOKS, I PICK AND CHOOSE WHAT INFORMATION WILL SUIT MY HORSES AND MY STYLE OF RIDING. I FOUND THIS BOOK HAD A LOT TO OFFER AND AM LOOKING FORWARD TO READING IT AGAIN.

An enjoyable book of "slice of life" stories.
Murphy's stories in _House of Java_ are honest looks at relationships: romantic, platonic, intergenerational, and otherwise. The only weak link in the story is a horror-type sketch that reeks of urban legend, set in the desert. The other stories held my attention, and the characters are drawn with wit, intelligence, and compassion.

I recommend this book.
