A new civil war?
Nuclear winter drives northerners south with the inevitable coflict. It's told from the viewpoint of a compassionate but tough sheriff's deputy who is torn between the snowbirds and the locals. In the middle of the books is a flashback to the aftermath of a nuclear war. That the author is able to make this warning of the future palatable within the context of a great story is what makes this book not only hard to put down, but important. As a literary reader I usually don't find thriller-type novels engaging, but this one, perhaps because the author is so confident of his storytelling ability he feels no need to impose his ego on the book, really got to me. Florida will never look the same to you.

From the Horse's Mouth
So Far, So Good is a superb read. It is the autobiography of Mark Todd, New Zealand's equestrian icon, and international event rider of the century.

It is fascinating to read of his early life in New Zealand, and of the sheer hard work and detirmination of his early years on the international three-day eventing scene.

This book also reflects the early years of New Zealand eventing, as Todd and his contemporaries were the forefront of a wave of New Zealanders who have since dominated the international circuit for over a decade.

Todd has a relaxed 'one-to-one' writing style, and is not afraid to state his opinions. I enjoyed this aspect of So Far So Good the most, as it is rare for riders who are still involved in the sport to make their opinions known so widely, for fear of controversy. Not that Todd is in any way vindictive or spiteful, merely that he writes about the way he sees things, without fear of offence.

Readers do not need to be involved in Equestrian sport to enjoy this book, as Todd is an inspiration to any person who wants to be inspired to succeed in their field, whilst still retain their values and sense of place.

Good introduction to the sport
I bought this book for my mother so she could understand what rock climbing is all about. Now, when I come back from a climbing trip she is clued into to all the lingo. This book does a very good job of describing (with pictures) how rock climbers scale a wall. If you are intersted in the sport as a watcher, or a participant, this the book for you.

Social Perspective
Residing in a international, cross cultural environment, I required a comprehensive and concise study of the social perspective on emotional and behavioral studies. This book was recommended by my advisor. I recommend it here.

The editors bring the structuralist and interactionist perspectives of sociology into psychology with the contributing writers in the most illucidating manner. Even if I weren't a student of psychology, this book would make a very fascinating read.

Social Science in the Crucible: The American Debate over Objectivity and Purpose, 1918-1941

Insightful and well-researched
In this highly useful book, Dr. Smith, a professor of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, provides a powerful historical lens onto questions fundamental to social science. Looking at fascinating, representative thinkers--Wesley Mitchell, Charles Merriam, Robert Lynd, Charles Beard, and Harold D. Lasswell---Smith asks "Knowledge for What?", i.e., should social science be the quest for understanding the world "objectively" or "scientifically" or remaking the world through a passionate commitment to social justice and research as advocacy. Well worth the time of scholars and students in US history, American Studies, and various social sciences.

Maintaining Competence in Old Age
This compilation of important issues in the field of Aging is authored by several renowned researchers. It is a volume which covers a broad range of cutting edge research findings and commentaries on research conducted within the last decade. This interdisciplinary look into the societal mechanisms that affect older adults includes support systems, cognitive training, and environmental supports. It touches on active life expectancy, disability, institutional life, and more. These treatises, brought together in one volume, add validity to each other on these cutting edge research topics dealing with maintaining competence in old age. I not only found this book to be informative for my independent research studies, but also rather enjoyed reading it. I think it is an important volume to have on your shelf if you are interested in the field of Aging, whether you are a current researcher, undergrad or grad student, or involved in the field of Gerontology in any way.

One of the most important anthropology books ever.
This book builds on the kinship theories of Wilson's sociobiology, applying these principles in a startling and radical way to well known anthropological data--the cultures around the globe and through the ages as recorded by ethnographers. This book is a classic, and a MUST for those interested in the story of mankind

Worlds apart: the story of the Methodenstreit
This excellent book is a must for anyone interested in the historical roots of the dominant economic school today (noeclassical economics) and how it shares foundations with sociology. This may come as as a surptise for most students of either economics or sociology, but these approaches used to unite in studying the dynamics and mechanisms of society. However, due to fundamental disagreements pertaining on how to study this phenomenon, economics and sociology separated in the 19th century (the methodenstreit) read all about why and how these schools mnow wide apart maybe are reuniting in a neoinstitutional framework. This book is really well-written by one of the really great authorities in social network research: Richard Granovetter. I can only recommend this book which will make you feel much wiser on the social sciences when you are done with it
