Enjoyable but... there is better
I find that some topics are not explained very profoundly.
I truly prefer Futuyma's book.

If you are serious about evolution, read this.
I have the 1994 edition. It is a textbook, but it was no act of masochism to read it through. This is a compliment to any sizeable textbook, but do not think it reads like a novel. If you skim it, you will be missing a great deal.

I liked the writing, which is clear, pleasant and efficient; no waffle. The book is carefully structured and the aim throughout is to convey the successive themes; there is not much stopping to sniff the flowers. Examples and illustrations are effectively chosen to illuminate specific points. The history of the subject and of views on the subject matter is carefully interwoven with the development of the themes, to give a powerful insight into the respective status of major current schools of thought. The book is exceptional in its dispassionate discussion of rival opinions.

I should have liked a more comprehensive index. Several times when wanting to refer back to points, I was reduced to paging and searching. The CD version must be a real luxury.

Strongly recommended to students, professionals and serious evolutionary dilletants. Creation scientists have no one but themselves to blame if they burn their fingers on it.

Dazzer's review of 'The First Doctor Handbook'
Marcus Hearn's exhaustive research in the early 1990's provides the basis of most of the information in this comprehensive guide to the formative years of Doctor Who, yet nowhere in the book does he recieve even pssing credit. Rather than being presented as a dry 'info-dump',the book's accessibility could have been vastly improved by more user-friendly approach to conveying its wealth of material, some of which is interesting, some mindlessly dull. Unforgiveable, too, is the insulting 'What others said about William Hartnell' section, which is not used in any other handbook in the series, woefully implying some kind of inadequacy, or unreliabilty in Hartnell's own words. Equally annoying are the reviews offered by David Howe for each individual story, which are vapid and predictable in the extreme. He awards 'Marco Polo' and 'The Crusade' 10/10, despite both being broadcast some 35 years ago, claiming 'he really can't find anything wrong' with either story. Is this really the point of being a Dr. Who fan, as Howe claims to be? Strangely enough, the stories that remain intact in the archives (and thus accessible for review) such as 'An Unearthly Child', the classic first ever story, favour less well, suggesting, as John Nathan-Turner once infamously stated, 'The memory cheats'. Although, as usual, it's sheer wealth of information is indispensible, this is by far one of the weaker handbooks in the series.

A must for all Doctor Who fans who want to know more!
This book is a must for any Doctor Who fan. From the inception of the show in April 1962 to the end of October 1966, this book looks at the William Hartnell era of Doctor Who. These handbooks are really good. I've only seen these stories recently, but the book brings back the memories of them. It even thoroughly helps out on the missing episodes that can't be seen, by summarising these stories. So you get a sense of how it might've been like to have seen them. The attention to production details is excellent. You learn about interesting facts about the episodes: budgets, originally intended actors, location and studio recordings, original titles, original direction of some stories, etc. The book is divided into 8 chapters: William Hartnell stuff, the Doctor, the stories, establishing the myth, production diary, a focus on the making of the classic story "The Ark", and selling the doctor. The First Doctor Handbook is a great reference source of information on Doctor Who's early years. These handbooks are all great (there are 7 volumes in the Doctor Who handbook series), but the fact is that the first doctor handbook was actually the third one made in the series, published in 1994.

The co-authors trio of David J. Howe, Mark Stammers, and Stephen James Walker have proven themselves to be the definitive historians on the Doctor Who TV series. Besides the handbooks, they have also written three volumes focusing on the three decades of Doctor Who's television run: The Sixties, The Seventies, and The Eighties. I highly recommend all of these books to any fan of the world's longest running science fiction TV series!

Picture of the Ford Mondeo in the UK
Given that the Ford Mondeo is actually a Ford Contour of the UK, there was no information about the pictures that were used. In the section were they talk about changing the radio, the picture shows the climate control dials aren't the same as the Contour's, but of the Mondeo. They should have mentioned that the picture didn't match

Disapointed
Book #2 in my read through the Hugo's. While I thoroughly enjoyed "The Demolished Man" by Alfred Bester, this novel comes across as being way too preachy. Seeking a telepathic companion, Joe Carter orchastrates the building of the first super-computer, named Bossy, that has the ability to renew mankind. Wash away their prejudices and preconcieved notions. And, I guess in the view of the authors, create a race of zombies with no convictions. Skip this one if you're looking for classic Sci-Fi.

Typical novel of the fifties
This book was originaly called :"They'd rather be right" and won Hugo in 1955.The book is typical for those years. The idea is simple: We created something new and of course we do not know what to do next. Should we destroy it or should we worship it or maybe it's just something that should make everybody's lives better? .The book answer those questions and more. If you do not read much science fiction or read only the NEW "STUFF" and you do not usually use your brains , this book is not for you. You would not simply understand why this book was in top twelve most important Sci-fi books ever. However, if you like to think for a change and like the genre, read it and you will not be disappointed.

Warning: Not ALL Islands Listed
I usually LOVE Frommer's books. Their book on Costa Rica is outstanding and so is their Europe on $50 a day. However, I was a little disappointed with this one. My husband and I are about to travel to the Greek Islands and we wanted to at least see a one page per island description -- even if the description just says "uninhibited, don't travel here.' This one only goes through the main islands. I'm sure it's still a good guide but we wanted to see at least a listing of all the islands. It does give good tips and stuff and I'm sure we'll find them all helpful.

Great reference
I went traveling in Greece 2 years ago and found other travel books to lack info on the Greek Islands and had to struggle my way through the islands. As I am planning to return this summer, I have found this book to be a good reference to prepare, and one that I will bring with me. When most of us think of Greece, the Greek Isles are the place most of us invision. This book gave me a good reference as to where to go, where to stay and what there was to do. I would reccommend this book to others.

Average on basics, weak on prevention
My impression was a review of what I have heard from each therapist I've visited such as ice, stretch it, strengthen it. If I had never head that advice, I would find the book better than 2 stars.

An ounce of prevention...
This book is the best book I've ever read on golf related injuries. This book is a must for anyone who wants to enjoy playing golf for a lifetime. This book not only prescribes treatment for existing injuries, but also gives valuable advice on how to avoid them. Pick it up.

Not much help
Pretty much contains a lot of recycled material in simplistic form from other, more detailed, sources. Not enough meat to feed a Merlin (small raptor).

For MS-Win95x platforms only
("There is no language- or platform-specific information here") says the editorial review. i.e. this book is not a syntax guide.

But nonetheless this book is solely about designing Windows-9x GUIs.

Without having read the others, only Susan Weinschenk looks like being an intelligent platform-neutral book on this topic.

A basic intro to the subject for non-electrical engineers
This book, a fairly short paperback, is a good first exposure to the subject of power line harmonics in an industrial or commercial setting for electricians or non-electrical engineers. This book is NOT for the electrical engineer designing or planning line harmonic countermeasures.

Excellent guide for the non-engineer
This is an excellent guide for the average 'Joe' technician/electrician which is what it is meant to be. It gives a very clear and concise explanation of the basics complete with graphics. I certainly recommend it as a good starting point for those interested in this subject.

A wide-ranging but slightly schizophrenic approach
I bought this book as a unix fan wanting a broad technical overview of modern networking, and to some degree got what I expected. The book covers just about everything from 10base-2 to ATM but never actually goes into sufficient detail to provide anything but the broadest of detail - not enough if you're looking to set up a new network (look at Spurgeon's "Practical Networking with Ethernet" instead). Some of the technical details are a little, umm, "shakey" too. As the book is composed by many authors, each bringing their own prejudices, its opinion on issues such as unix veer wildly from total dismissal to full-on smooching, which is rather tiresome. All in all, a decent introduction, but nothing more, despite the book's manic proportions. Too many writers spoil the text.

A solid reference guide for the beginning LAN Admin
This book is a decent starting point to networking. It not only introduces the reader to the different theoretical, logical, and physical aspects of networks, but also gives practical advice and solid guidelines for choosing appropriate network options. As often happens with many technical manuscripts, the book sometimes wanders without a logical flow. In essence, it makes a much better reference manual than a tutorial. The examples given are also trite--leaving the reader with little enhanced understanding at times of some of the various topics covered.

Confederate Flag on the Moon?
This book takes the reader out on a limb and trys to build a hypothetical story as to the South winning the war starting at Gettysburg.

At least it was entertaining, at most it's a lively spin on events that actually took place with the addition of a more Southern slant on history.

Good for those with a vivid imagination and a thirst for "What ifs"

If the South won Gettysburg
I liked it because it had a happy ending, unlike the actual historical event.
