Amelia Earhart (What's Their Story?)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (24 April, 1997)
Authors: Andrew Langley and Alan Marks
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Sparse information and inaccuracies.
The attractive, easy reading format doesn't save this disappointing entry to the "What's Their Story" series. I had hoped for more from a reputable publisher, but I'm afraid I find inaccuracies in children's materials unacceptable. The timeline in the back gives the incorrect year that Amelia Earhart disappeared, a pretty basic fact that puts the quality of the entire series in question and the capabilities of Oxford to publish children's material in doubt. Our children deserve more respect than this.

Extremely vague - written for people with no common sense.
The title of the book should be: "Tips on how to use common sense" and not "Managing the Project Life Cycle." For $60 I expected a detailed and resourceful book that would help our company develop a reliable Software Life Cycle. This book wasted my time and my company's money. I would rather use ISO 12207 or MIL-STD 498 documents as a reference rather than this book. Bottom line: there are very few books in print on the Software Life Cycle, yet this is the one you should not buy.

not a doctor
Before you read the book, you should find out a little bit more about the 'good doctor.' He was my doctor and my mom's doctor. Under most cases he was fine--as far as I could tell. However, when my mom started getting nightly, unexplained fevers and had growths shown on x-rays. He told her to get a new thermometer and never bothered to follow up on the x-rays. Finally, after going to a different doctor--it was discovered that the fever and growths were cancer. He never found that out in a month, and she died 2 months later. Maybe he was too busy with jokes and books, but it's hard to support or give too much respect for a doctor like that. My advice: avoid the book and avoid the doctor.

The Art of Military Deception

Don't be deceived by this book.
Mr. Lloyd's credibility plummeted when I began to read the first pages of his introduction to this lackluster book. The entire introduction appears to be a condensed summary of the first three chapters of Colonel Michael Dewar's excellent book titled "The Art of Deception in Warfare." In fact, Mr. Lloyd seems to have relied more than heavily on Colonel Dewar's book. Even the title is nearly the same.

Even more maddening is that Mr. Lloyd has included a fair amount of material that seems to confuse self delusion and incompetence with strategic and tactical deception. In Chapter 1 he devotes several pages to the American revolution and the Zulu and Boer wars in Africa. Nothing in that chapter has anything to do with the principles and techniques of deception in warfare.

A better investment is to hunt down a used copy of Colonel Dewar's book. It is a far, far better resource if you are interested in the principles, means, and techniques of strategic and tactical military deception.

The Art of the Maasai: 300 Newly Discovered Objects and Works of Art

The Great Kamba Con
This book is a beautifuly presented and photographed con. In my association with Maasai people since 1985 I have never known, seen or been informed of such mystical objects. The accounts of the Maasai since Hinde, Hollis, Merker through to Klump and onwards have never alluded to the existence of such items. In talking to friends in the Loita Hills early in 2001 the items were dismissed as Kamba carvings. Turle provides no provenance for these objects and does not ever appear to have collected the items personally from the Maasai - which would heve been so easy to do - always by way of an intermediary, who obviously hot-footed it to the Kamba carvers south east of Nairobi to fulfil the next order. Turle and Beard should know better given the long association with Kenya. A nicely presented book but useless.

A respected expert's advice is compromised by awful editing.
I have read this author's articles for FW (Fine Woodworking) and alway's found them to be excellent. This was the first book I purchased after getting my own bandsaw. My hopes for a definitive reference tool vanished as I plowed through too many typos. The most damaging were step-by-step sections that were incomplete (i.e. missing an important step.) and paragraphs of advice that conclude by contradicting the advice just given. (i.e. I still don't know if I should de-tension the blade after use or not.) I was very disappointed, and returned the book. Mark Duginske's articles in past issues of FW by the Taunton Press contain most of the core-content of this book, and benefit from excellent editorial oversight. Something Sterling Publishing does not have. Save your money and skip to you local library. All you need to know about caring for your bandsaw this author has already written in the pages of FW (Fine Woodworking.)

Yawn....
With a sense of style that recalls the worst of the National Lampoon publication of the 70's...how this made it to publication somehow escapes me. Perhaps the first minstrel show of the Millenium. Exploitive and needless.

Silly giggles, pee-pee doo-doo....you start to get the drift....severly lacking in any intellectual value at all. Avoid.

"Christian Marxism"
After condemning capitalism because it is "secular" and asking Christians to repent for the crimes of the market economy, Goudzwaard pleas for Marxism--just another "secular" option! He seems to ignore that leftist economic views rely on a deep misunderstanding of the subjective nature of cost & price (determined by the supply and demand, not by the "omniscient" state interventionism) and that they always lead to utter poverty and alienation of all freedom.

This was not listed as a child's book. I wanted it for an adult who cycles. I thought a history of the bicycle would be a nice gift, not at all what I wanted.
