Too Many Errors and False Information
The text of the book is full of errors and misinformation. Poorly informed Chapter 2 will give you wrong information about OSI model and internet history. Be careful with this book, verify all the important information by checking other more reliable sources. New Riders is going downhill, avoid them.

Very good book if you need more detail
This book provides more wonderful information that a NT Server book does not contain. The book covers all different types of connections from dial-in to PPTP. This book should be used if you are not getting the information that you need in an 'overview' book.

Check Your Facts
When writing a term paper about the Jesuit missions to China under Matteo Ricci's leadership, I was pleased to find this book. Easy to read and well written, it seemed a real find. Unfortunately, at least in the chapter concerning these missions, I found several factual errors and misleading statements. Make sure you check your facts if using this book for research.

A history of society of the smartest and ablest
Fascinating and intriguing, extremely well written history of one of the most successful, enduring and influencing societies of medieval ages. It looks sometimes like a collection of anecdotes, but may be it is a single way to put a history in a form a normal person can actually understand and learn from.
It is all here - treachery and faith, arrogance and humility, desperate quench for knowledge and blunt obedience. A history of a society which did it best to find, train and give a reason to live for the smartest, ablest and the most initiative people of its time.
A must read for any person, already employed or looking for employment in a consulting industry, especially in a top tier management consultancy (McKinsey, Bain, BCG, etc.).

As dissapointing as the others
One might wonder why I read so many of Mark Rudman's books if I continuously dislike what I find. I have no clue, perhaps I'm fooling myself into thinking that someday he might get a hold of some talent, after all he keeps getting his stuff published. Alas, this small book lets me down as did all the others. Nothing new, nothing truly evocative, nothing that captures my heart. Considering the subject matter, it's amazing it didn't move me at all.

I do not recommend this book at all.

forget what you hear
I don't know why the reader below keeps reading Mark Rudman either, or writing about him. Comments like his are wasted on somebody as unique. "The Killers" is an indictment of the entire Colombine tragedy/circus - instead of just assailing the trademark 'inhumanity' of the killers, it asks: why do people continue hiding in suburbs? why is the shock to such an event so ritualized? and does anybody that bothers to shout "this will never happen again, not here!" have any real say in the matter whatsoever? i.e. Questions only a poet could ask.

For Beginners
I read this book. It is not clear how to make a program because one page explains what to do but the next page (back) explains more about it. I rather to use these pages in one so that I would able to follow it. There are some examples of code sources and it is too many spaces in the sources. Another example of the source: a very few lines (start) at the bottom of the first page and the second page are displayed of the source (end). We would have missed first few lines at the beginning (or even at end of the line). There is another book that I found is: "Programming in ANSI C" by Stephen G. Kochan (new version). I really like it. This book is for IBM programmers but I am going to use this "Programming in ANSI C" book for Macintosh. (I am beginner.) Good luck.

Good for beginners
I thought that this book was helpful. I am just starting out with C and this was my first book. It gives great sample programs and goes through the source code step by step. Great for beginners. If you already know some basics of C than I wouldn't suggest it. But if you are just starting out, buy it.

disappointing
the last trumpet was great. this is not. some stories have an amazingly weak plot. some are simply not interesting. some are not horror at all. some i don't even understand. it is well written, i'll give him that. but he needs better plots than this. it seems like he wrote these stories sufferig from an overdose of literature after a vacation. perhaps he will do better next time. promising battle descriptions in one story. some regular fantasy stories a la Robert E. Howard by Rainey wouldn't be a bad thing. i'll buy it if you write it, Rainey!

A Good collection of horror from Deathrealm's editor
I recommend Legends of the Night for fans of subtle but gripping horror, as author Rainey presents a group of his own stories featuring ghosts, demons and unnammable Lovecraftian terrors, with the proficient style we have seen in many of his published tales in Robert M. Price's Cthulhu series and others. Look closely at 'Children of Burma' and 'Stalker of the Wild Wind' which are very characteristic of the author's finest work. There are a few coarse edged stories, like 'Gunhand', 'Forgiven' and 'Petey in La La Land' which seem less powerful than Mr. Rainey's usual tense and atmospheric style, but even these are above average, and commendable divergences from the other short stories in the book. As an avid reader of Deathrealm, Mr. Rainey's late and lamented but long lived magazine, I found it a treat to read a well done collection of his short fiction, especially attractively packaged like Wildside has done in this hardback. I hope there will be more offerings like this in the future and that Mr. Rainey sees much success with his future endeavors. Legends of the Night is very much worth it's price.

Not as good of a gift as I thought it would be!
The Golfer's Edition was nice but yet it still wasn't al that I had expected. It showed the thoughtfulness in it but I thought it didn't show as much of the inspirational aspects in golf as it should have. Is was to general for the Golfer that I bought it for.

NOT a power user book
I purchased this book sight unseen since it was referenced as a "Power-User" book. I've used Macs for the last ten years and consider myself savy but no tech-geek or mac expert. Yet almost everything in this book i already knew, both in terms of mac use in general and 8.5 specifically. To be fair, I did find a handful of useful tips or insight into several areas i was less familiar with, but this accounts for maybe 5% of the book. On the other hand, if you are new to Mac and/or 8.5 this book is excellent and I would give it a 5 star rating. For power users, it gets one star for the few tidbits it offers mac savy users. The included CD, like all book CDs, strikes me as pointless since its almost always out of date by publication time. For its steep $50 list price, the book offers power users little value for their money.

An essential resource for MacOS 8.5 users
At first glance, I thought that this was just another of those too little too late books that seem to be all too common. Not so, this has to be the first book I have ever had on the Mac Os, that is worth the purchase price. It covers all aspects of Apple's MacOS 8.5 and is a goldmine of information. The book is also loaded with information on many useful shareware and commercial applications that enhance the Apple system software and demonstrates many useful solutions that will greatly enhance your Mac operations The section on Applescript is excellent for people who are using or learning to use Applescript, or for those who just want to understand scripting in general. This book also describes connecting Macs to various PC operating systems including NT and Window 95 this section alone is worth the price of the book. Having used Macs and Pc's for many years I was pleasantly surprised by this excellent resource. A must have for anyone using MacOS 8.5.

Vague and ambiguous
In my opinion, heinous criminal acts must be severely punished. Crimes such as culpable homicide, rape and child molestation deserve the harshest punishment. It is vitally important that the punishment fits the crime. It follows then that crimes of gruesome nature deserve capital punishment whereas misdemeanour should result in mild punishment.
Irrefutably, the primary purpose of a given sentence is to deter people from committing criminal acts. Therefore, it is crucial that prisons act as a deterrant; otherwise the judicial system is purposeless and superfluous. Paradoxically, prisons in Sweden do not deter prospective malefactors; instead they encourage some individuals to commit crimes. This is because prisons in Sweden have frequently been likened to hotels and this is not an exaggeration. This is a fact of life. To my mind, it is preposterous to assume that these modern and sophisticated prisons manage to deter people from committing criminal acts.
A criminal has to fear incarceration, otherwise there is no point in maintaining the judicial system. Capital punishment is considered to be inhumane and ineffective. What we need to ask ourselves instead is are felons humane. Do they repent their atrocious acts? Admittedly, some felons deserve clemency due to mental disorders that may have impaired their ability to know right from wrong. Nevertheless, they should be sentenced to life without parole.
As is well known, many convicted criminals commit additional crimes upon release. Thus, given the fact that a great number of felons relapse into criminality indicates that there are serious flaws in our judicial system. There is no simple solution to this problem. However, there is no doubt that legislators need to be held accountable for making ineffective laws. Most importantly, prisons have to act as a deterrant. Vehement felons who have been convicted of odious deeds should either be imprisoned for life or sentenced to death. Abolitionists would argue that people do not commit abhorrent crimes unless they are deranged. This is true in some cases but we must not generalize. Admittedly, some dangerous malefactors had been subjected to maltreatment in childhood which later led to development of severe mental disorder in adolescence. Nonetheless, traumatic childhood does not justify psychopathy, it merely explains it. In sum, this book provides weak arguments against capital punishment.

Must Read
This book is a must read for anybody who purports to have arrived at a conclusion regarding the merits of state execution. It is not an academic examination of the pros and cons of the death penalty in America. Rather, it is a description of state execution arranged in a collection of essays written by people intimately involved in the process. The essays describe the process of state execution from the vantage points of capital defense attorneys, relatives of the victims of capital crimes, and even state executioners. It even includes the transcript of an actual execution that occurred in Georgia in 1984.

I give this book five stars primarily because I do not believe a person should arrive at a firm conclusion with respect to the death penalty on abstact pragmatic or moral/ethical academic arguments alone. One must first understand the process, the nuts and bolts, of state execution and how it affects those most directly and closely involved in either fighting against it or carrying it out. We are, after all, talking life and death. This book serves that purpose marvelously. Nor does it hurt that it is a thoroughly fascinating read.

Happy reading.

Marino: On the Record

On the record - Not too factual
It didn't seem that Dan reviewed this book before it was printed. One part of the book, Dan says he threw the trick play against the NY Jets to Fryar. That was wrong, it was Ingram. The next error is that he was making NY think he was going to throw it into the dirt. There is no dirt in NY, it is all Turf. Last, he said that the noice is so loud with all the NY Fans in the stadium. Everyone in NY knows that that stadium is 1/3 Dolphins Fans when Miami comes into town.

Great pictures, Marino speaks
Some excellent pictures of both the Dolphins and Marino. Marino speaks of both the good and the mediocre of his career from his upbringing and his family through his wife and kids. He doesn't touch on any huge surprises or vent any frustrations. A good book for the huge Marino fan. I went through it in about 1/2 an hour sitting in the store. Nice for the coffee table
