Thinking Through the Body: Archaeologies of Corporeality

Review from the Cambridge Archaeological Journal, Vol. 12
"This is the first archaeology book to focus on, and in doing so to systematically challenge archaeologists to think about, the human body as a site of experience and social structuration. Others have, of course, broached such issues, but none have done so from the varied angles attempted here...The book's major strength is that it invites us to 'think through the body' as the title suggests from the beginning... I recommend this book to students and professional archaeologists interested in approaches to the past and in archaeological theory and practice." - Bruno David, Dept of Geography & Environmental Science, Monash University, Australia

Excellent!
I think this book is an absolutely wonderful introduction to a particular subset of Buddhist philosophy, and done so in such a way that it may benefit our own lives as well as the academic and practices of psychology today.

Specifically, the examination of the Buddhist Realms of existence (of which there are 6 I believe) and its relation to our states of mind. In doing so, we are treated to stories of the personal struggles of his patients as well as their parallels to Buddhist concepts (most notably the 6 realms).

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good INTRODUCTION (as the depth could be expanded further of course)to Buddhist philosophy within our current scientific concepts, as well as psychologists looking to expand their world view and see ancient Buddhists as their predecessors. A well written and caring book.

Charming! And humourous... okay, just read my review...
This story was about two characters, Andrew and Victor (I just read this last week - I can't remember if the name is correct or not...). Andrew and Victor have just made friends, Andrew moving into "town"... they spend most of their summer together... Victor, tho' he seems daft, is crazy about planes, and loves the Lightnings. Andrew is worried about how Victor will take it once the Lightnings are scrapped and replaced by Jaguars...
There were a lot of emotional parts... and I loved reading about the descriptions of everything... I hope this makes sense! Victor and Andrew's mum are comical - I don't know how to do this! I hope it's posted up anyway, and that you all can read it...

To Mark Our Place: A History of Canadian War Memorials
Published in Hardcover by NC Press (September, 1987)
Author: Robert Shipley
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $120.03

Informative for the first-time reader.
The author is careful to include a brief history of the war monument, he has also done his homeword and places obvious emphasis on monuments of WWI. All in all, I strongly recomend this book to anyone ineterested in Canadian memorials. On a more critical eye, the author does not state the problems that arose in provinces that were felt to be less nationalist (i.e.: Quebec City), another problem is his passing interest to the war experience as women saw it, and the Myth of the War Experience. Complementary reading will remedy this.

3 Cheers for the Bicycle Corps! Oh yeah, and for Twain.
"Tom's Lawyer" is the sixth in Heck's series featuring Samuel Clemens. All the books are at least mildly enjoyable and sometimes are a lot of fun. The basic premise of the series is that Clemens has hired recent Yale graduate William Wentworth Cabot as his traveling secretary. Inevitably, the pair meet with murder, and Clemens (known to everyone in the world as "Mark Twain" with the exception of Wentworth who apparently has never read any of Twain's books) emerges triumphant as the detective. In this installment, Clemens, Wentworth, Mrs. Clemens and one of the Clemens' daughters are in Montana, taking a week's rest from the first leg of their project round-the-world tour. Also in town is Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Show, featuring Annie Oakley. Another visitor to town is Tom Blankenship, the boyhood friend of Clemens' that was the inspiration for the character of Huckleberry Finn. Theodore Roosevelt shows up, too, to help investigate when Blankenship is accused of murder. Also on hand is the Buffalo Soldier Bicycle Corps, and I was immensely pleased to see them featured (and incredibly smug about having read about the Corps the previous year in Sorensen's "Iron Riders"). The mystery itself is okay, although Wentworth and Clemens never get around to questioning witnesses under their noses until Clemens' daughter gets into trouble trying to take over the investigation. Wentworth (is he ever going to read one of Twain's books?) is the brawn of the pair, although he has acquired at least some street smarts since his first outing. It's the character of Twain himself that is, as always, the strongest and most enjoyable aspect of this book and the series. By no means a great book, "Tom's Lawyer" is definitely readable and re-readable.

Torts according to case law not language
Professor Grady's casebook is intended for law students, but the approach he takes is strikingly different from that of other casebooks. Professor Grady believes that appellate cases have two salient aspects: facts and holding. Thus, he edits the judges' opinions mercilessly, often reducing a multi-page case to a few lines. For the most part, doctrinal matters are not the focus of the book. Prof. Grady's approach is not to have students learn the application of "danger invites rescue" but to predict how a case will turn out. The theory is that the case law is, essentially axiomatically, consistent or discarded and that by knowing enough cases, one can predict the outcome of fact patterns. All of the important cases (_Palsgraf_, e.g.) are included, but Prof. Grady has a fondness for bizarre cases, and the book includes a large number of cases with bizarre fact patterns (the little boy who put newspaper down another boy's pants and set fire to the paper, e.g., or the circus horse that evacuated itself on a spectator). One obvious omission from the casebook is the area of defamation (including slander and libel). Overall, though, the casebook presents a wealth of cases, and the reader can predict case results with great accuracy. Topics covered include: strict liability, negligence, *res ipsa loquitur*, intentional torts, and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

Toyland

Flawed work of genius
How is it possible that Mark Smith, that great blazing star that for one glorius moment seemed poised to light up the entire firmment of American Literature has so quickly burned himself up and disappeared without a trace over the horizon? Make no mistake, Mark Smith could have been one of, no gawddammit, THE greatest American writer of the late 20th century. Nobody can read Death of the Detective and not walk away awestruck by the man's sheer unfathomable genius for writing, creating supporting characters more complex and real than any thousand lead characters in any thousand books, overall emerging in a work of hallucinatory power now, tragically, like Toyland out of print. As for Toyland itself, it was like a first draft of the Death of the Detective, irritating, annoying, repetitive, and yet just verging upon the wild and powerful genius that would so suddenly appear in Death of the Detective and the fabulously intricate personality sketch, the Middleman, now, alas, forgotten as well. Please, somebody out there, read read Toyland, read read Death of the Detective, read read the Middleman if you can find it somewhere anywhere - but don't read anything else by him, because if you do you will have no choice but to weep as I have for the impossibly brillant talent so inexplicably squandered in the later years in tomes of amazing triviality that read as if parodies of the greatness which was once Mark Smith.
