CD-ROM Title flakey
The book itself is very interesting. However, when you run the CD on a Windows 95 system, you receive the following error:

"The media resource is not open. Try using "mmopen" before this command."

Very dissapointing for a 4 year old who received the book as a birthday gift.

Tried to contact the company using the e-mail address provided, and it was bounced.

It's not as good as I thought!
The book wasn't what I thought it was. I was hoping that it would concentrate more on the basic director stuff instead of so much Shockwave/Internet stuff.

A Double-Barreled Detective Story
Published in Unknown Binding by Commuters Library (October, 2002)
Author: Mark Twain
Amazon base price: $25.00
Average review score:

Twain on Automatic Pilot
Twain could always come up with a good yarn, and this is as good as any, so far as plot is concerned. But this send-up of the Sherlock Holmes genre never really gets off the ground. A send-up should be funny. But there is too much in the plot that is evil and dark, so Holmes' appearance -- and his incorrect solution -- become merely annoying. The reader on the tape version does what he can to keep things moving along, but he cannot stifle the inevitable feeling in the listener that this is Twain churning out words for money. Still, it IS Twain after all, and so it does have its moments. Just not enough of them.

Disappointing
As an ecology student, I expected a sound scientifically written ecology and management tool. Although some selected studies were quoted, this book appears to have a political agenda. Every section has a "and here's why doves should be hunted" swing which I found to be annoying.

Interesting, but Not Provocative
This covers some of the ground in the Hastings Center Report special issue on enhancement printed in 1997, with very little additional material of value. Difficult to say whether it would be useful for teaching, and not especially coherent reading for a broad audience. Also not very well typeset or illustrated, unfortunately.

well-intentioned, but flawed, guidebook
This book has many typographical errors and some scientific errors as well. Intended to reach a nonscientific audience, the authors have oversimplified many topics to the point of giving incorrect information. Nonexpert secondary teachers, for whom the book is intended, will not be well-served and will convey incorrect information to their students if they rely heavily on this volume to the exclusion of other scholarly references in the areas of limnology, zoology, entomology, and general biology. Other general guidebooks, such as the Golden Guides or National Audobon Series provide better information, although not tailored for an educational purpose. Teachers should use this book with caution with respect to the scientific material. Although the science-in-action concept is pedagogically appealing, there are too many errors in this book. With a thorough editing by a knowledgeable expert, this could be a useful tool for the high school classroom.

A dramatic story minus the drama.
Disappointing. I kept wanting to like this book, but it never engaged my interest. This is the Jack Webb version of the story, "Just the facts, M'am." This is strictly documentary reporting by his MI5 case officer, not storytelling. There's no drama, suspense or intrigue. Remember the Giants-Dodgers playoff game where Bobby Thompson hit his home run? This is like reading the boxscore in the newspaper, instead of hearing the sportscaster call the play on the radio. I hope somewhere there is a better Garbo book. He's an amazing, heroic man whose story deserves to be told with all the cleverness, imagination and dramatic flair that was no doubt his.

Projects seem nice, but text needs more work
I've already built two of the projects from this book. However, I had problems with both. The authors seem to have stock in the woodfiller companies as they are consistently advising you to put screw holes through visible faces. There were parts missing in the list of materials from one project and the diagrams didn't match the finished product. Some of the ideas seem a little tacky, like the Grandmother Clock. Overall though, there are some good ideas, and it's a great way to get started. I can just see a beginner getting frustrated as pieces don't fit or don't work due to the mismatched diagrams and lack of instructions. I think a little more proofing on the part of the publishing company could have really cleared this up.

Good Effort, Overpriced!
While having some good material for anyone considering entry into the Family Day Care business, there is very little information provided which cannot be found in books selling for half the price. The only things I found in this book which was not in three others I have read on the subject were the copies of government forms which might be used by practitioneers once they have opened their home day care business. This does not add the enough value to the book to justify the price.

Very Broad Overview
I bought this book because I am an income tax preparer. I was disappointed. This book gives a very broad overview of every tax imposed by NYS, e.g., sales, gasoline, excise, tobacco, liquor, etc. The information on income taxes is very sketchy and less helpful than what is in New York's income tax form instructions. I was hoping for in-depth analysis. This book did not have it.
