A very good source of easy to understand information
Mary Horowitz does a great job providing powerful empowering information to Lupus patients and their families. Lupus is complex and affects so many different parts of one's body (and mind). I date a lady who has had Lupus for many years, but was only diagnosed about a year and a half ago. Prior to the correct diagnosis, doctors weren't able to pull together all of the different symptoms and positive ANA test. Even though I have been involved in medicine all my adult life, I had never "seen" a complete Lupus patient until I my friend was DX'd. After reading Horowitz's book, I feel much better able to support my friend and understand her symptoms and effects of Lupus on her body. I recommend this book for family members as well as Lupus patients.

My rheumatologist is Dr. Mark Horowitz
I was so happy when I finally read this book. Dr. Mark Horowitz is one of the best rheumatologists out there and when he diagnosed me with Lupus 3 years ago, I never thought I would understand any of it. Thank goodness he took the time and effort to participate in this book and actually sit and explain everything to me. Any time I have a question, I have no problem going back to the book and if it is not there I call his office and he explains anything I want to know. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for some answers and not because my doctor wrote the book but because it is a GOOD book.

Good info for starting out
When I was first diagnosed, and had little to no clue about lupus, I bought this book. More because of the pink edging on the cover than its applicable title. It turned out to be very useful & filled with good information. Think of it as a "starting off" point though. It isn't as "nitty gritty" medical as it could be, nor is it a female empowerment book. It's for getting good footing when you're lost in the first icy swirl of diagnosis.

Good book
This is a huge book with lots of information. I liked the presentation and the author knows what he is talking about on a very large subject.

My only complaint is that I wish the author had written more from a tips and tricks style, or added a section like that.

Great Book - a bit of everything
Used it to study for the exam (70-229). Wish it had a little more on installation options and directions - but great reference. Great overview of everything. May not be ideal for hardcore in-depth stuff. Definitely would suggest it!

Must for DBAs
Last week I had to migrate from Oracle 8 to SQL Server 2000 and this book came in very handy. The chapters are well composed; especially about networking is easy to read and understand. The examples throughout the book are excellent and the case studies are good too. It could have more questions based on real life settings for prcatice. Anyway this is a great reference book.

Death- The Great Imposter
The subtitle for this review should be re-enacters the great story spinners! In the chapter A Wrinkle In Time, Nesbitt relates a story that I've heard many times from Civil War Re-enactors. It happens in different places on the battlefield to different people but essentially the story is always of meeting a lone soldier who gives them two live rounds of ammunition, walks off and then fades away. Of course, the rounds prove to be authentic! This story is either a well-crafted battlefield legend or a very expensive practical joke. A ghost cannot hand over something that no longer exists in this time period. If this were possible, I'd have our ghost loot his own time and have an apartment full of antiques, heck I'd open up a shop!

There's also a story where a ghost is referred to as a poltergeist, which does mean noisy ghost, only a poltergeist is really an energy force coming from a living person not a ghost.

This volume is as well written as the first volume. While his historical research is topnotch, his paranormal understanding leaves a bit to be desired. Still it is an intriguing read and well worth the monetary investment!

Haunting, chilling and entertaining to read!!
Former Park Ranger Mark Nesbitt has over the years gathered many ghost stories from other park rangers, visitors and people who live in the area. Nesbitt tries to gather factual data on the stories he receives so he can offer a background as to why these ghost stories may have evolved. His stories are usually quite interesting and do not just talk about battlefield soldiers, civilians alike are also involved in famous ghost stories in Gettysburg! Buy all 5 books, there worth it! Each has many short stories that are easy and fun to read.

Chilling Page-turner
Very good ghost stories of the spirits that reportedly haunt the battlefields of Gettysburg. I couldn't put it down! His other volumes in the same series are equally good! Very well told stories.

A good overview of nanothech
It's a tad bit technical for the lay-person, but it will definitley give one a solid grasp of what nanotech is all about.

Intro to Nano
What a nice, easy introduction for the lay reader to an important new field of science that will be a part of our lives for years to come! I am a professional, non-scientist, and I found this intro to nanotech to be an easy-read that provided a perfect survey of the breadth and potential impact of this field. I have listened to a couple of lectures on nano-applications in medical science, but in comparison, this book was a more lucid and entertaining preview of this field.

A thorough and excellent book
The book is tailored for the non-specialist who has been yearning for an insight into a field that seems to mostly exist in rumor. The breadth of topics is astonishing, discussing the physics, the engineering techniques, the economics and even the philospophical implications of this new technology. The prose is also excellent - its casual and often humerous style helps make a conceptually difficult and technically demanding field approachable.

Ortona: Canada's Epic World War II Battle
Published in Hardcover by Stoddart Pub (October, 1999)
Author: Mark Zuehlke
Amazon base price: $27.95
Average review score:

Nothing New Here
A readable precis not just of Ortona, but of the entire Moro River campaign (the title is a bit of a misnomer). Covers ground ably covered by Daniel Dancocks in D-DAY DODGERS and by Gerry Nicholson in the official history THE CANADIANS IN ITALY, but really offers no new insights into how the battle of Ortona itself was fought. A good book for anyone looking for a general description of the Canadians in the Moro, and some good interviews with vets, but again - the appendices are strewn with errors, there has been almost no research done regarding the German side of the story, and the actual fighting in Ortona isn't touched until page 251, and takes up less than 100 pages of this 400 page book. Anyone expecting a detailed study of the house-to-house struggle tht came to be known as "Little Stalingrad" will be sorely disappointed, as I was.

Very little here that hasn't been covered in other volumes already.

My Dad Would Have Loved It
When I saw this in a bookstore in Toronto this past summer, one of my sons knew it would be the perfect birthday gift, as my dad [and, of course, his grandfather] fought with the Canadian Army throughout the battles of Sicily and Italy.

Dad was a sergeant with an anti-tank battery with the 1st Anti-Tank Regiment, and while he was reluctant to discuss the war in any detail, there were times - especially with a few beers under his belt - when he would open up. Even then, however, the horrific battles at the Moro River and Ortona were off usually limits.

Then, in the early days of his brief battle with Alzheimer's disease, he spoke of those days in the halting, limited vocabulary that is the bane of the disease's sufferers. And I remember him telling how his AT battery would be called in to blast away the top floors of some high buildings in the town and open up gaps in the rubble for the Shermans.

He also spoke of the spooky German withdrawal, saying one day they moved into position only to find them "all gone ... all gone."

How thrilling it was to see these events covered in Mr. Zuehlke's book. Thank you, sir, for the one of the best volumes on the Canadian effort in that theatre of the war.

He should be proud.
A gripping story of one of Canada's important contributions in WWII. Hard to put the book down once started. An excellent illustration of what is perhaps the classic Canadian experience of the war. The author calls upon all possible sources in order to present a complete account of the overall battle, including the complete Canadian advance from the Moro, leading up to the streetfighting battle itself. A fine job by Mark Zuehlke, who could be the Stephen Ambrose of Canada.
P.S. My father was at Ortona, for him it was just another job. He should be proud.

Coming out of hiding.
A Past in Hiding is the story of Marianne Strauss-Ellenbogen and her extraordinary survival during the Holocaust. Presenting us with one young woman's real life story, Roseman does not paint a picture of a saint but that of a real flesh and blood person who, like us all, had great strengths and also weaknesses. She was, after all, in her teens when she was confronted with events too difficult for her to comprehend. She was only a couple of years older than Anne Frank, but what a different reality! Roseman's investigation into Marianne's history engages us deeply in the day-to-day life of herself, her family and friends. We can follow how and why they misjudged the increasingly dangerous environment they lived in.

The book has a lot more to offer than that. Given Roseman's extensive knowledge of modern German history, he is able to draw a multi-layered picture of every day life for the Jewish community in Germany during the Nazi period. The investigation into the role of the Abwehr in protecting selected Jewish Germans is pertinent for the recent debate around the complicity of the regular army with the SS and Gestapo. Moving between historical chronology and present day commentary and personal reflection on Marianne, the author pieces together a mosaic like a jigsaw puzzle. For most readers it will shed new light on the complexities of this period in recent history like very few other books I have read.

Roseman writes in a style that combines the historical with the intimate personal. He conveys his assessment of the characters and situations with empathy for their situation and struggles. At the time he reflects on discrepancies in their statements and recollections of the past. One of the most dramatic documents in the book is the diary of Marianne's fiancé, Ernst. He was able to smuggle it out of the concentration camp Izbica thanks to an unconventional courier. One of the family acquaintances with probable links to the Gestapo, was nevertheless willing to act as courier for parcels from Marianne to Ernst; he also brought back this very rare contemporary account of life in the camp. Roseman digs into historical records to verify and complement the description. As part of his investigation, he interviewed the courier's widow as well as others who could add to the story.

I started reading A Past in Hiding primarily because, as a child growing up after the war, I knew some of the people connected with Marianne and the "Bund". It was Bund members who provided shelter to Marianne while she was on the run from 1943 to 1945, thus risking their own lives and security. The Bund was a small but committed group of humanitarians and socialists who helped numerous victims of the Holocaust. One of the survivors protected by the Bund, Lisa Jacob, became a friend of my family. She influenced my life more than she ever knew and also much more than even I understood for many years while growing up. However, my interest in this extraordinary book grew with each page that I was reading. It was difficult to put down.

A Past in Hiding has a lot to offer to the reader. Roseman's research into the life and times of Marianne brought him together with her and her family members as recent as the late 1990s. He also interviewed numerous other "witnesses" of her life and survival during the Nazi period. It was fortuitous that so many family documents as well as official records survived. Roseman studied diaries, correspondence and countless historical documents. His notes and the comprehensive bibliography reflect the thorough research that has gone into the book. As a result, at some level A Past in Hiding reads like a detective story, fully absorbing and dramatic. At another level, it is a very personal and critical account of Marianne and her contemporaries. At a third level, it is a study into the changed memory phenomenon, which can occur as a result of traumatic experiences. Last but not least, Roseman introduces the reader to the almost unknown movement of the "Bund" and their role in supporting victims of the Holocaust. An extraordinary book that should have a place in the mind and heart of many people.

Extraordinary archives well assembled
More than the focus on Marianne, I came away from this book thinking about Ernest. Marianne's story is better than most fiction in it's ability to illustrate a time and place gone, to breathe life into people we've never met and to serve as a larger parable for the history surrounding her. Ernest has his own place in this narrative. He is a look at the soul of a loving person trying desperatly to remain himself in impossible times. Both people of extreme character, Marianne and Ernest are worth knowing. Far beyond that, is the author's exploration of oral history and the pitfalls it contains. (That alone recommends this book to the casual family historian.) The inadequately documented actions of ordinary Germans of decency is given a boost by Marianne's papers and shines deserved light on many. If you've read several dozen testimonies already, this book still offers a great deal of new information to consider.

Poignant Biography of a Holocaust Survivor
Professor Mark Roseman's "A Past in Hiding" is a fascinating, often riveting, scholarly account of Marianne Strauss Ellenbogen's life in Nazi Germany. I suspect that this fine book will be remembered as one of the best written about the Holocaust. Its excellence stems from Roseman's analytic, almost psychological, portrayal of Ms. Ellenbogen's childhood and early adulthood. She comes across as a willful, headstrong person who sought solace more in her identity as a German than as a German Jew while the Nazi extermination of her family, friends, and countless others proceeded at a relentless pace. The book also introduces us to "The Bund", a hitherto unknown socialist anti-Nazi resistance movement based in Essen, Ms. Ellenbogen's birthplace, and describes how its members protected Ms. Ellenbogen during the two years she was in hiding towards the end of the Second World War. Professor Roseman also describes how other Germans, including some loyal Nazis, acted heroically to save Ms. Ellenbogen and to delay for nearly two years the eventual deportation of her family to Nazi concentration camps. We read eventually of her mundane life after the war in Great Britain, married to the Orthodox Jewish doctor who rescued her, keeping her tragic past hidden for decades to both family and friends.

Advanced book for popular piano enthusiasts
Keyboardists can use this book as well. The first part details basics (chords, scales, etc) real quickly (I guess experienced users wont need the basics in detail) The second part goes through genres specifically. (pop ballad, rock, r&b, gospel, country etc)

Parts are split up among accompanying and melody leading. A beginner with no background will have no idea how to use this book. It is not a manual, more of a reference book for popular piano styles. Not for beginners, for the experienced. There isn't too much text explaining things. More of it showing and the reader to understand, digest and improvise. So you need some prehand understanding.

Excellent book no doubt.

I do have complaints though. First the binding is terrible. My book's pages started falling apart very quickly. I needed to go to a publisher friend of mine who took it apart and rebinded it for me. I may have had to lose the pretty cover but now it is sturdy. Second the paper is made of somewhat heavy stock making the book itself very large and weighty. I'm sure this contributed to the book falling apart.

This book has more than meets the eye
This could be a very good technique book as well for people who want to learn popular piano if it is read and used carefully.

He has an abundance of technical exercises in rhythm patterns, which is something that cannot be gained from Hanon, the king of technical exercise books.

Many teachers are not very good at teaching popular piano, instead preferring to reinterpret it as classical music (which is not appropriate given its different rhythm patters and key signatures--often less complicated than those in classical). This was written by a man who teaches popular piano and has a very clear idea of the rhythm patterns that make that unique. For example: He makes extensive use of the tie line and syncopation in his examples of R&B, which is what one finds in real music of this genre. But it is very hard to get that type of practice if learning classical songs.

As it has been noted before, the binding for this book sucks. But there are ways to get around that.

Also: This seems to encompass almost everything in other basic theory books that I have read/ own. It has actually obviated my other theory/ rhythm books. It will be a good saving of money to invest in this before any others.

Finally: The book CAN be used by beginners (in tandem with learning some scales) if it is used as he recommends. He says in the opening pages that it was written/ designed to be used by people at myriad levels.

Excellent book on learning the patterns of each style
I've been working out of this book for a few weeks now and it's excellent. I consider myself an intermediate at piano, I'm completely self-taught and never taken piano lessons. I just got fake books and taught myself. However this book fills in a huge whole (for me). It gives patterns in different styles. So after completing this book, when I read a fake book I'll have lots of patterns to chose from.

As the others said, this isn't a book for beginners. Someone with years of piano lessons can probably go right through it, whereas I spend 30 minutes just on a couple patterns. If you're a novice and don't mind spending a lot of time praticing, you can greatly benefit from this book as well.

Finally, I purchased the MIDI files from Mark Harrison's website. I strongly recommend these if you're not a really good piano player. I mute each hand while playing the other while learning each hand. It's very helpful.

disappointing
This book has plenty of errors. Page 80 says import to library streaming.fla (file provided on their website). FlashMX chokes.

I was hoping to pick up this book and write a crude web based non linear editor with FlashMX within a few hours, but this book is disjointed.

By the way, page 58, MPEG is Moving Pictures Expert Group.

Overvalued
This book may be good for beginners in a business course. In reality, if you're in a management position of any significance and don't already know everything this book talks about, you must be hurting.

Really Opened My Eyes
Look, everyone knows the management buzzwords. We must embrace change; we must empower the employees; we must listen; we must plan; we must maintain focus. If everyone were doing it, a lot of people would be a lot less dissatisfied. The problem is, you may not know how your behaviour makes you a less effective manager.

The stories in this book (all true) tell about companies where they've got it right and companies where someone is clueless. When you recognize your own behaviour and realise (as you've never realised it before) how you've been sabotaging yourself, you've taken the first step toward fixing it.

I don't usually like to read books on how to improve my business style, and this book taught me why, and why I'm hurting myself instead of allowing myself to grow. It was a real pleasure to read, I've got a few action items to work on, and I'm going to approach future books on this topic with a whole different attitude.

Avoiding Business Pitfalls
The more clearly you can know what doesn't work, the greater clarity you can have about what works.

You will find it refreshing to hear the thoughts of someone who understands management mess-ups and can shed light on 57 pitfalls you can avoid in an engrossing fun read that pushes his points home through powerful stories.

Instead of just walking you through the fog produced by problems, Eppler helps you clear the air with his Turning Failure into Victory at the end of each of the 57 pitfalls.
