A great popular science book on the field of motor control
This book is an extraordinary combination of a piece of history with the state-of-the-art research in the field of motor control. It contains a translation of a popular-science book by the Russian physiologist Nicholai A. Bernstein, and then a few commentaries describing the current state of the research in the field of motor control. Bernstein is one of the pioneers in the research of motor control and his book describes in a simple language the main properties and problems that are to be solved in order to understand the amazing dexterity of human motor control. Dexterity is in finding a motor solution for any situation and in any conditions. Bernstein describes many nice tails and legend to illustrate this ability, such as the Bible legend about the giant Goliath and young David, who defeated the giant with dexterity. Then he describes the origin and construction of movement and the problem of the excess degrees of freedom, which is referred to in the scientific literature as the Bernstein problem. This problem is due to the biological system being redundant. Redundancy is by no mean redundant, it contributes to the flexibility and reliability of the system, therefor I prefer to relate to the redundancy as a virtue rather then a problem. Bernstein considers redundancy as the main distinction between the motor apparatus in man and the higher animals and artificial devices, and after half of a century this problem is still open and we keep trying to understand and imitate the great dexterity that nature developed in controlling redundant systems. This book is recommended for the general scientific oriented public, such as the readers of Scientific American and especially to students in engineering and in medicine that are interested in the field of motor control

Laughter truly is the best medicine
This book is a healthy dose of wry, sly, wit. "Merry tales -- pills to purge melancholy at plague time", according to the editors, Mark Bullen and A. H. Bullen. The first edition of this work was written in 1564 by Dr. William Bullein, with later editions coming in 1573 and 1578. This text incorporates all three editions, pointing out the differences between the volumes. Although the editors have preserved the 16th century flavor of the text, I find it remarkably easy to read. The work is set as a dialogue between various characters. This seems to have been a novelty for the time, and the technique was copied by at least one later writer. From the dialogue between the characters comes a very good look at the practice of medicine in 16th century England. Dr. Bullein (or, "Bulleyn", or "Bullen" as he sometimes wrote)has "hidden nothing from you that maie be a meanes to your health". Instructions are provided for the making of ointments, pills and potions to cure a variety of ailments. Dr. Bullein will also tell you the signs of plague, and which segment of the population is likely to fall victim. The book may be considered a bit pricey by some, but I think it is priceless.
Dialogues With a Modern Mystic

Comprehensive Introduction to the Mystic Path
Written in the form of an interview with Mark Matousek, Andrew Harvey brings his knowledge of eastern religions, the Christian mystic tradition, and modern scholarship to bear on virtually every issue pertinent to bringing a mystic perspective to contemporary Christian life. Harvey makes it clear that mysticism is not the private domain of monastics but actually an imperative for the "ordinary" Christian wishing to make a real difference in his or her world.
Diamond Rock

Red goes out with a bang.
This was the third and last of Schorr's loving parody of the pulp detectives in his Simon Jaffee/Red Diamond series. In this no holds barred, no punches pulled thriller former cab driver Simon Jaffee, or "Red Diamond, 1940's Private Eye" and tough guy as he believes himself to be, meets up with his former wife Milly (who's suing him for divorce), his genius All-American son Sean (who's searching for his underage slut runaway sister, and wants dad's help)and a host of music industry moguls and rock stars who are worried that someone seems to be methodically murdering them one by one. The irony of all this is vividly conveyed by author Schorr, who paints a sympathetic and believable picture of "Red" who refuses to believe either his son or ex wife's lawyer, but still helps the boy while trying to guard a group of obnoxious, spoiled, male rock stars. All throughout of course he's always on the lookout for his beloved moll "Fifi" and the evil "Rocco" criminal mastermind. The only bad part of this book is that Schorr stopped writing the series with it, but read it and judge whether or not he did well by his hard boiled multi-personality hero.

This volume bridges gap between medicine and diet
Messina is a well-known name to vegetarians through her cookbooks, and to the science of nutrition through her scholarly articles. This book, though erudite and intended for dietitians, is valuable to everyone interested in vegetarian nutrition. I would recommend it to physicians, owners of diet salons, nurses, as well as every vegan who wants to understand the value of full nutrition. Great job!
Digging in Cumorah: Reclaiming Book of Mormon Narrative
Published in Paperback by Signature Books (February, 2000)
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:
Breaks new ground
I enjoyed this book because it breaks new ground in terms of Book of Mormon scholarship. Most scholarly works pertaining to the Book of Mormon fall into two categories (1)those which support its historicity as an ancient document, versus (2)those which relegate it to religious fiction. This work focuses on the meaning of Book of Mormon passages by intrepeting the rhetorical forms and narratives found within the book. Skeptics who read this book may find themselves intrigued by the sophisticated narrative styles of the Book of Mormon as elucidated by Mr. Thomas. Believers, on the other hand, may find the resemblence of many of the narratives to King James Version counterparts unsettling. For those seeking a confirmation of their belief of disbelief, look elsewhere. This work shows that the Book of Mormon itself, whether historical or not, is a "good read". The Book of Mormon, like its originator, Joseph Smith, is difficult to "pigeon-hole" and those who read this book will understand why.
