Although Mark Harris' Henry Wiggen baseball books were written many years ago (starting in the early 50's with "The Southpaw" and "Bang the Drum Slowly," and finishing in the 70's with "It Looked Like For Ever") these are great books that are timeless.

In some ways, "For Ever" is the best of the lot, because it deals with time and aging and how we deal with that. Henry becomes even bigger and more real as he grows fallible. I remain touched to this day.

I am very sorry to learn that this small, beautifully put together
book is out of print. If you have ever vacationed in or worked in or
simply visited Italy or if you have dreamed about doing it, you'll
want to, somehow, find this book. Leavitt and Mitchell have collected
famous writers thoughts on Italy (D.H. Lawrence, Nellie Melba, John
Ruskin, Mark Twain, etc.) and then written down their own wonderful
musings: (What makes an Italian ragu?, The thing that Italian boys do
better than any other boys in the world, Is there a cure for chicken
pox?, Speaking "opera" Italian, et al).This is a charming
& fascinating book which ... is definitely not an ordinary Travel
book. This is a book about living in Italy and loving and relishing
every moment and sharing those moments with us. I hope Chronicle
Books is smart and generous enough to reprint it or, perhaps, publish
a paperback edition.

Gives McSweeney's a run for thier money. I am now eagerly awaiting works from several of these contributers.

This loving biography is written by Jack Benny's widow, Mary Livingstone Benny, her brother and Macia Borie. Reading this biography takes you back to a much simpler time, when you could listen to the radio without hearing shock jocks and stupid promotions every 10 seconds. It's also a love story, one that is made sweeter by the lasting quality of it compared to the current crop of celebrities that are out now (Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley splitting after less than 4 months of marriage - who even has the thank you notes finished by then?).
If you enjoyed Jack Benny on radio or tv, get this book and get an intimate portrait of this wonderfully funny man.

Jackson's book is the definitive reference for the serious collector of English silver. It clearly explains the English silver standards, and provides a basis for understanding the silver standards of the world. It provides an in depth history of the development of the English system of hallmarks and provides a detailed study of intricate hallmark variations. A must in dating English silver.

I have never taken the time to review a book before, but this one definitely deserves the kudos. It is well-written and nicely displayed. The recipes are exactly as described. The vast majority use ingredients that are easy to find (even in my rural town) and the instructions are easy to follow. Everything I have made from this book turned out wonderfully and most require only an average amount of effort in the kitchen (nothing too complicated!!) The dishes were truly beautiful and delicious.

This book is a great resource for new initiates as well as veteran jazz lovers. It will help anyone to get a clear understanding of what jazz is all about -- individual expression and passion. Gridley fills in gaps that you can't get from reading liner notes alone. This overview breaths life into each stage in the evolution of jazz in America.

Author Matt Newell set out to pay homage to the great 19th century adventure writers when he penned the first of this series of adventure novels set in the 1870s and built around Jebediah dane, an ex-Confederate officer and archaeologist. He takes the reader from the afermath of the Civil War in the South through an amazing journey in the Andes where Confederate renegades plan to revive the War against the North. A rich list of characters race through a series of 'high' adventures culminating in a battle between the US Federal Government and the Rebels in a valley high in the Andes. Not content with this amazing feat, Newell then reveals the true enemy, an underground group of Inca survivors whose machinations surround Dane from the beginning of the novel. The final chapter is true high adventure as Newell's lead characters escape a hidden Inca City high in the Andes. Its a great read! Also a great set up for his next novel, set in Augusta Georgia and based on a secret confederate weapon - loved it!
