Christian theologian and philosopher Francis A. Schaeffer (1912-84) wrote this pamphlet (38 pages) as a warning to fellow believers. Beginning with Jesus' admonition in John 13:33-35 that his followers should love one another, Dr. Schaeffer goes on to explain the love that a Christian *must* have, and how that love should be manifested. In particular, this book is advice on how Christians of differing denominations should love each other, and how they can avoid the pitfalls of showing their love in the wrong way. The book ends with a poem selected by Dr. Schaeffer to accompany this text; it is quite moving, and worth being read in its own right.

Although written in 1970, this book could have been written yesterday...I suppose you would have to say that it is timeless. This book is quite touching, and should be required reading for all followers of Christ. I highly recommend this book!

Schaeffer's tiny booklet is a must for anyone who calls themselves a Christian. In it, Schaeffer shows that Christianity is not simply about right answers or intellectual belief, but about a deep, heart-felt love. We may be able to share a perfect gospel presentation and logically and concisely answer all objections, but as Schaeffer says, our "final apologetic" is that the world sees us love each other. Christians can do infinitely more harm with all our bickering and in-fighting that we could ever do good with mere words.

The same problems plagued Francis Schaeffer in 1970 that continue to plague Christianity today. This little book is a mini-exegesis of John 13:33-35. The question being, even in our differences, can a world of non-believers see Christ's love in our dealings, one with another? If you've never read Francis Schaeffer this is a great introduction. If you've already read Schaeffer, then this is a great addition. In either case, 'The Mark of the Christian' is must read material!

An outstanding, deeply moving book,The Mark of the Horse Lord is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It is the story of Phaedrus the Gladiator, who poses as Midir, Lord of the Dalriadain (a tribe of Northern Britain). Set during the Roman period, it describes the customs and beliefs of ancient civilizations clearly and believably. Its realistic inclusion of cruelty and death, however, makes it inappropriate for very young readers. I highly recommend it for ages 12 and up--it may be classified as a "children's book," but it far surpasses many adult books I have read. Its central theme--the true meaning of kingship--is powerfully and beautifully developed as Phaedrus gradually grows in love for and understanding of his adopted people. Phaedrus himself is a very real person, as are the others--Midir, the true king of the Dalriadain; Liadhan, the woman who blinded Midir in order to take his throne; Conory, Midir's closest friend, who alone recongnizes that Phadrus is an imposter; and Liadhan's daughter Murna, who Phaedrus loves. In the end, Phaedrus recognizes the deepest meaning of kingship, and becomes the Horse Lord in truth, and not just in seeming. And, as in all the best books, the reader is left with the feeling that it all really happened--just that way--and that nothing could have happened differently.

Who can weave a story of history, suspense, excitement, danger, heroisim, and drama with more skill than Sutcliff? I have read 9 of her books, but so far this surpasses them all! Former gladiator Phaedrus is made king of the Horse People, a northern British clan, impersonating Midir, the true Horse Lord whom the wicked queen Liadham blinded and so disabled him from coming to power. Phaedrus and his followers try ridding themselves of Liadham, but she escapes. Many battles against her follow. The Mark of the Horse Lord will draw you into the days of ancient Britain with the adventures of the new king. A superb piece of work, a must-read!

To me, this is the best of Rosemary Sutcliff's many fine books, and my personal favourite. I suppose I should find the basic premise that one man can successfully impersonate another from an entirely different culture with only a brief period of indoctrination, but somehow it hardly seems to matter! You see Phaedrus the gladiator growing into the kingship he has assumed, and finally dying for his people as he has lived for them over his scant year as ruler. As with all Rosemary Sutcliff's books, it works on one level as a really good adventure story, with all the fine detail of battles and riding and chariot driving, but it is far more than that, and every time I re-read it I see something new.

Mark Danner has written a marvelously researched and page-turning account of one of the larger attrocities in Central America committed by U.S. trained, supervised and funded armies. After the American War in Vietnam, the U.S. made a strategic decision to pay the locals to do our fighting. In other words, a proxy war. Lieutenant Colonel Domingo Monterrosa, the crafty, spirited and charismatic officer who commanded the Salvadoran forces at El Mozote, trained in Panama at the U.S. training installation later moved to Ft. Benning, Georgia and named the School of the Americas. Graduates of the SOA have been implicated in the murders of thousands of civilians, Archbishop Romero and American nuns and priests.

What I found most interesting, contrary to my previous opinion, is that the Ambassador and at least several American officials in San Salvador believed something terrible had happened in El Mozote. Without access to the site - it had been recaptured by the FMLN rebels - they could prove nothing. Nevertheless, they attempted to communicate their fears to Washington. Washington decided not to believe. Instead, the New York Times recalled one of the reporters who had been to the site at FMLN invitation and had seen the bodies. The story seemed unbelievable.

The story was, of course, Communist propaganda and therefore not to be believed. Well, yes, the FMLN did broadcast the story with the intent of influencing Salvadorans and Americans. It was propaganda. It was also true.

There is a parallel in U.S. history. (There may be more than one.) During the 1920's and 30's and even later, the American and European press was rife with reports of mass murders in the Soviet Union. The press reporting these attrocities had for years been reporting and editorializing against the Soviet threat and Communist revolution, many times exaggerating or being more than a little creative. They had also supported the American-British-French invasion of the Soviet Union after WWI. Liberals regarded these sources as unreliable and untrustworthy, and continued to defend Stalin. The liberals were right, of course, just as the Reagan Administration was right: the reports were propaganda. The reports were also true.

Sometimes the enemy is right. We should take care to listen.

What a shame it would have been to the writers of the American constitution to see the policy that the US took in El Salvador and the Latin American region. How could a country with the ideals of liberty and freedom of oppression support a government whose army killed and cruelly repressed its innocent inhabitants? I was a young girl when El Mozote massacre occurred but I remember the fear that infused every sector of society. Where was the liberty that the US was promoting if the only emotion allowed in the population was fear? Dissent, protest even ideological differences were brutally repressed! Mark Danner is an excellent journalist and a corageous human being by bringing to the attention of the American society the barbarism committed with the funding and support of the US government. Danner tells the truth about events and violations of basic human rights by the US. supported Salvadorean regime. Danner wins 10 out of five stars in my rankings.

What compelled the army to decapitate infants, hang children and wipe out an entire village of 800 civilians? Why did the U.S. support a government that massacred nuns, priests, social workers and catequists? Danner's book presents in clear and undeniable form the insanity of U.S. policy in El Salvador in the 1980's. I am a U.S. priest working in El Salvador not far from El Mozote. Every day we work with survivors of the war, and see the results of the trauma still evident. Danner's book gave me a great insight into the decisions that led to the Mozote massacre, as a keyhole to the broader conflict.

I remember the first time I touched this book, i fell so in love with it that it was very hard for me to remember how many other things I had to do during my day. It really illustrated how every problem you solve (or at least try really hard) can be an entire lesson you can use later on.
It is very well organized, even the problems in each section are set in a way that each one helps with the previous one in case a more creative solution doesn't show up...
I love this book, and I really recommend it for any student studying for any math contest around the world. It really helped me, and I'm sure it will do the exact same thing to anyone with the desire to spend countless hours solving beautiful math problems. Good luck, God bless you all :)

This is a marvelous book for lovers of mathematical problems. Scattered about are wonderful problems in Geometry, Trig, Algebra and Analysis, Invariants, and Number Theory. A truly delightful read that will have you working on some problems for hours. Each section introduces the reader to the concept or technique needed to solve the problems in each section. The problem sets start off with a few "warm-up" problems that quickly build up to some that require keen (some brilliant!) insight. A true gem among most problem books since this book is not merely a book of problems, but also contains clear presentations and introductions to various concepts in mathematics. The solutions are a true delight, the ingenuity and beauty of mathematical problem solving is captured exquisitely in this fabulous book. Highly Recommended. A++

The book, Mathematical Olympiad Challenges", is a delightful book on problem solving written by two of the leaders of the craft. Mathematical problem solving is a skill that can be honed like any other and this book is an ideal tool for the job. Problem solving usually involves elementary mathematics; this does not mean "easy mathematics". An elementary mathematical problem is one that is easily stated and can be understood by anyone who has had basic training in the subject (up to calculus). The solution, though, may be quite hard and may require a great deal of ingenuity and thought.

It should be noted that being an exceptional problem solver does not necessarily make one a good mathematician, but it helps. This is certainly true of the second author who is also a renowned mathematician in the field of knot theory and three dimensional topology.

As mentioned the two authors have a sterling record in the arena of problem solving and in coaching would be problem solvers. I am more familiar with Razvan Gelca who led the University of Michigan team to a top five finish in the highly competitive and extremely challenging Putnam exam. This exam is administered yearly and is open to all college students in North America; usually around 430 universities and colleges send teams to compete in the Putnam. The exam has been offered since the thirties and finishing at the top carries a great deal of prestige. Razvan's superior abilities led to the spectacular success of the Michigan team which was no mean feat.

My own experience with the book has been one of revelation with each passing page. I used the book to teach the problem solving course at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and it helped me immensely. The book possesses a variety of topics in elementary mathematics, ranging from algebra to geometry to trigonometry to number theory. Each chapter is divided into sections and each section has a theme. In keeping with the theme, the authors mention some useful formulae and/or facts that may be used in that section. This is followed by a demonstration of some dazzling problem solving techniques applied to a couple of problems. This is then followed by a list of challenging problems of varying levels of difficulty, all related to the theme of the section. There are roughly 18 such sections and many, many problems to think about. The rest of the book, which is the bulk of it, is dedicated to providing elegant solutions to every problem posed in the first part. Occasionally a problem merits more than one solution and sometimes the way is pointed to some interesting mathematics. The authors also acknowledge the source of many of the problems in the book which is a good indicator of the pedigree of the problem. Almost every solution is a gem and each problem demands its own style of solution. As noted earlier, problem solving is a skill and the authors try and succeed in conveying that idea in the problems and solutions they present.

In summary if you are interested in figuring out puzzles, if you are a problem solver of elementary mathematical problems, or if you are just plain curious how a large fraction of mathematicians got hooked on mathematics, I would highly recommend you give this book a try. You may learn something and may even enjoy yourself in the process.

To all those who are looking for a photographic atlas of anatomy, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN McMINN's. This atlas has dissections and photos that are the epitomy of anatomical science. The book itself is beautifully organized into logical sections that integrate osteology, myology, and anatomy into a comprehensive package. After I read this book, I was ready for anything my professors could dish out on practicals. However, for written (theoretical) anatomy, you will need a descriptive atlas (I recommend Grant's). All in all, this book is extremely useful, and I recommend it to any allied health student who has to take anatomy.

The photos in this atlas could be exhibited in an art gallery: the dissections are pure class and the photography is breathtaking. I had no problems whatsoever identifying what was what because (1) there aren't arrows all over the place (the features are labelled with numbers) and (2) the size and resolution of the images are life-size or close (not those tiny pictures in other atlases and previous editions of this atlas). For the head and neck, no atlas can come close: the photos are exceptionally good (even for an atlas of this class) and show different perspectives of the same aspect in good quantity. Quantity however is the downside for the rest of the atlas. Although the photographs are great, there aren't really enough pictures for you to have a satisfying review session. It's probably this fact, and the high price of this book, that has caused Rohen & Yokochi's colour atlas to head the market in its stead. Rohen & Yokochi is a great atlas, but McMinn's is a GREAT atlas. If there were only more photos in McMinn's, all other atlases would be out of print.

This CD is just fantastic ! Being a medical student... I was in total awe when Professor Peter Abrahams presented this to our class. Never was my attention so focused on one thing. I highly recommend this CD to any person in the medical field and who is interested in having an excellent grasp on the Anatomy of the Human Body. This CD gives a 3D aspect on every aspect of the human body - bones, muscles, joints etc and that's just the beginning. This is definitely one you should have as part of your medical resources.

Excellent book for inspiration! One that you keep with you!

With so many books on the market professing to be catalyst for change and growth, where do you draw the line and say enough? I would suggest doing it after you add this book to your collection. This book will be your best friend in any difficulty. It will not justify, excuse or have pity on your circumstances. It will however demand that you take responsibility, buckle your belt tightly and simply change your mind about things. Isn't that what best friends are for?

Since September 2001 "Messages from God" has been my book companion and inspiration. I have read it almost every day, and I have always found a pearl of wisdom, so poignant, so true, so clear... Messages.. comfort me when I was probably in my worst year, I was unemployed, my relationship of more than a year was interrupted without reason. I start to visit the Unity on the Bay School of Christianity and I have found the book in the booskstore. It was heaven sent. I have found the answer to so many questions! I found reassurement, peace of mind. As a result of the "couching" of Lynn Marks my confidence increase. I start to hear "that still little voice" and my life start to change for the better. I have started to understand what happened and I gather myself and call my ex-boyfriend. We start to talk about the book, I e-mail him some of my favorite quotes, we start seeing each other again. We talked about our feelings, and finally we admited that we love each other. Lynn's book helped me doing it.
Since then, I'been studying the book and have copied some quotes that I take with me and share with friends. By e-mail, I have translated the most useful quotes for a given situation, and send it to my friends in Spain, Cuba and Brasil.
I cannot wait to see what else Lynn have in store for us.

I can't stop thinking about it. I wan't sure what to think when a friend got me the book for my birthday. I've read it at least 10 times in the six months since I got it. It's both hilarious and insightful.

It's been a long time since I laughed out loud at a comic strip, but Mr. Lowe had me grinning and laughing from beginning to end.

As a current classroom teacher myself, I especially related to the troubles and joys of Mr. Lowe. Even though I teach high school, and Mr. Lowe is a new 4th grade teacher, I found that we have much in common. Mark Pett has done an amazing job of capturing the universal issues of teaching and working with children, and has done so with a keen sense of humor. His cartoons provide much-needed levity in my over-stressed life. After reading a bit of Mr. Lowe, I find that I always feel better.

I think any teacher or school worker would find this book to be a real treasure. I also think anyone who has children will greatly appreciate it. Even if your only relation to school is as a student, Mr. Lowe is sure to make you laugh. Mr. Lowe the teacher and Mr. Lowe the book are both winners!

This book can make the most hardened student and burned-out teacher crack up. As someone who has taught elementary school, I can appreciate the trials and tribulations of Mr. Lowe. The poor guy just can't catch a break, but we love watching him try! Every teacher has had to put up with rascals like Quentin and goodie-goodies like Shanika, and we all know folks like Mrs. Stickler.

"Mr. Lowe" captures the spirit of teaching, with all its hilarious hijinks, depressing doldrums, and touching moments. Anyone who has spent time in elementary school -- as a teacher or a student -- should pick up a copy.

The Trib Force must jerney to Grece to rescue believers captured by Global Community forces. Mean while, the Trib Force begins planning for its most dangerous mission yet. Much like any tablature book on the market, you have to take the info within the book with a grain of salt.
These tabs are not transcribed by the actual musicians, but by people trying to figure out the easiest way to play these songs.
With that in mind - upon viewing the S&M video, I discovered that "The Thing that Should Not Be" is not in drop-D tuning as the book says, but rather in standard tuning tuned down a whole step (much like "Sad but True" or "Whiskey in the Jar" or "Sabbra Cadabra")- as far as I can tell, the only Drop-D tuning song that the mighty metallica does is "-human" from the afore-mentioned S&M.
these books are great to help you through trouble spots when you are trying to figure out certain difficult passages, but nothing beats figuring it out for yourself.
Still... could not have figured out some of the parts from this momentous album without the help of this book (especially considering what a novice I was when I first bought this - remember kids - downstrokes only... otherwise you won't be as cool as your Uncle James)

The Master tab book is definitely a must-buy for not only the avid Metallica muso-fan, but for those wishing to upskill themselves in various guitar techniques.

As mentioned elsewhere, take all tabs with a grain of salt, however, the solos are a near-enough note-by-note transcription and each riff is intricately tabbed to include even the most subtle of variations.

Includes a very well-written introduction, outlining some very important and helpful tips to assist you in your mastery of one of Metllica's finest albums.

In a one-line verdict: A definite must-have, even as a collector's item!

Sometimes, you can find tablature on the net that isn't always accurate, but you know that these cherry lane books are gonna sound right, cause they are!
