A Very Useful Book!
I first found this book thru my local library. It has helped so much that I decided to purchase a copy. This book contains excellent information for both Landlords and Tenants in Pennsylvania. Almost everything I needed to know when rewriting a lease was contained in its pages, including forms and letters! I also like that there is information on the Landlord Tenant Act, and that this info is much more detailed than I've seen in other books. I would recomend this book to anyone who rents from others, anyone looking to get into the rental business, beginning landlords and experienced landlords. A Must Have!!!

The real Onate
Many have made their views of Onate and opinions clear here around New Mexico, but few have ever made even a slight reference to the men around Onate ... the time Onate lived in, but alas, Marc Simmons has a captivating impartial review of the infamous Onate.

The Late Byzantine Army by Mark C. Bartusis
Mark C. Bartusis' book is a tightly written and well organized scholarly exploration of the Byzantine army in the final two-and-a-half centuries of the empire. Divided into two sections, the first part of the work is an overview of the army's role in the political organization of the empire. The section concludes with a very well-written short essay on the fall of Constantinople. The second section is a technical discussion of the organization and financing of the army. Coming to the book as a general reader with an interest in Byzantine history, I found the glossary of court and military terms very helpful. The bibliography provides a wealth of possibilities for future reading. Bartusis' writing is scholarly but it is not stilted and overly-formal as is the work of many scholar-historians. "The Late Byzantine Army" provides the general reader and the reader of military history with a brief but well-drawn and understandable portrait of the subject.

A Fair and Comprehensive Approach to a Complicated Subject
From the perspective of a city planner representing a city considering the "opportunity" of legalized gambling, I had searched for a book that comprehensively tackled the subject from both sides of the difficult issue. This is the first such book that effectively meets that goal. Heretofore, much of what I had read had a particularly biased approach that failed to fairly represent the pros and cons of legalized gambling. This book is a good start, but should be complemented with additional readings and up to date statistics and anecdotes.

Good readable pastor-friendly commentary
Rooker does a good job of treating the book of Leviticus on a level designed for a pastor. By many accounts the best evangelical commentary on Leviticus in existence is Gordon Wenham's in the NICOT series, but that is getting more out-of-date. John Hartley's more recent one (Word Biblical Commentary) updates it well but is much harder to use if you don't have a strong Hebrew background, so there's need for a good, readable, recent commentary on this book. Rooker's is probably the best to fill this need.

It's not over-scholarly to the point of making it hard for non-academic use. At the same time it's clear that Rooker has been informed by much serious scholarship, which is especially useful in updating Wenham's excellent work. Rooker knows the literature and uses it, sometimes giving arguments and sometimes just citing other places to look for more detailed discussion.

What's most refreshing about this book is that, unlike many books on Leviticus intended for non-scholars, this treatment offers a reasonable, balanced understanding of Leviticus for the church. It's not mere law for law's sake, and it certainly was intended only for the physical Israel, contrary to reconstructionists, yet it's not as if God has removed it, as dispensationalists argue. It reveals God's character and his dealings with his people in a particular time in salvation-history. The most significant application we can take it what it teaches us about God and the general kinds of human action and interaction are pleasing to him. Rooker is good at seeing the original purpose of these ancient laws but also excellent at tying them to the New Testament.

The Liberated Gospel: A Comparison of the Gospel of Mark and Greek Tragedy
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (March, 1977)
Author: Gilbert G. Bilezikian
Amazon base price: $6.95
Average review score:

This book will enhance your appreciation of Mark
Christians in the early centuries had little regard for Mark's gospel after Augustine declared it an abridgment of Matthew. Modern scholars, however, regard Mark as preeminent in the light of source analysis, which suggests that Mark and "Q" are the earliest gospels due to their brevity. Bilezikian's work counters these views by focusing on the literary form of Mark and drawing extensive parallels between it and tragic drama. He notes that the "themes of the Son of God moving incognito amidst humanity, of the Messiah rejected by His own people, of the interplay between befuddled disciples, wondering multitudes, hostile relatives, murderous enemies, and screaming demons, of a messianic destiny requiring suffering and ransom, of the ignominious execution under the ascription of royalty, and of the final reversal from abject annihilation to triumphant vindication--all combine to render the emotional pitch of the Gospel almost unbearable." This book convincingly demonstrates the tremendous accomplishment of John Mark in using the form of Greek tragedy to express the tension between the metaphysical quest of minds ridden with myth and the "unique, decisive, and all-encompassing fulfullment" of the Incarnation.

Imagination interprets his Foreign Service experience
The Foreign Service has many would-be-writers,who want to turn their exotic overseas adventures into novels and short stories. I know because I'm one of them. It is a rare one who can transform those experiences into stand-alone literary creations that do not center on the American diplomat protagonist. Mark Jacobs has succeeded. He is an inspiration. His foreign characters come alive. The interactions of cultures rings true. His sensitivity shines. I'm glad he's a writer. I'm also glad he represents his country abroad.

Classic Twain
Mark Twain began his career writing books about travel. Life on the Mississippi is about traveling the Mississippi. It is also about Twain's life as a river boat pilot. Anyone interested in Twain or the history of the Mississippi river should read this book.

As a business person, I really enjoyed the strategy involved in the Pilot's union that is described in the book.
