Algorithms, Data Structures and Problem Solving with C++

Thorough, but NOT for people new to advanced data structures
This book is very thorough, but thats really all I can tell you about it's content, because the material (both the algorithm analysis and the data structures material), is presented in such a way as that the author expects you to already have a basic understanding of these concepts. Worst yet, the author's code is extremely poorly documented. Stay away from this book if you are new to advanced data types or algorithm analysis.

Many details missing or left unexplained.
Tries to cover all topics but leaves many details that are needed by a beginner. Examples of code are difficult to comprehend.

This is one book every C++ Programmer should purchase.
This book should be on every C++ programmers list. Of all the books I've read on Data Structures and Algorithms using the C++ language this is the most comprehensive. This book also built my knowledge on the C++ language. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Junk Food Eroticism
This is an extremely thick book, so I suppose you get more "value" for your money. However, more isn't necessarily better. The book is cheaply bound, on cheap paper, with cheap looking photographs. The color photos are washed out, and there's nothing particularly interesting about the black and whites. It's the same poses over and over, same lighting, same angles. There can be a certain nostalgic charm about period models, but in the case of this book, once you've seen the first few photos you've essentially seen them all. There's not much editorial vision here. If you would prefer a jumbo bag of m&m's to a few imported chocolate truffles, then this book is for you--a thick compilation of generic images.

Size isn't Everything
While the subject is interesting the approach brings nothing new to the subject. The numerous illustrations are not organized in an interesting or novel way.

As if to reflect the poor quality of the material and editorial approach the physical product is shoddy. The reproductions are poor, the book is not solidly bound.

On the bright side it should not last very long.

Fun and Fascinating
Mark Roternberg's enormous, exhaustive exploration of cheesecake photography is an amazing window into our cultural life. It's also a good hot stare at many beautiful women.

The fact that many of these shots are clearly the work of amateur photographers who got their girlfriends to pose, not only nude but quite suggestively, rips the lie off the myth of the propriety of the 50's. The themes (and the excellent thematic organization) of the book are a visual catalogue popular sexual fantasy. The women themselves, in the shape of their bodies and the expressions on their faces, tell us a lot about their lives, and about the lives of men who gobbled up these images. Also, it's rather nostalgic to see all those natural, un-enhanced breasts. Lastly, the strict line between what is shown and what is not is, of course, a fascinating study in the difference between "acceptable naughtiness" and what was then viewed as perversion. These are the social limitations from which sprang the sexual revolution.

I find the organization and presentation of this book excellent. The material is fun, funny, sad, somewhat innocent, and occasionally very erotic. Also, the book is witty, simply by its organizing principles, even without saying a word.

Confession of a Killer
Mark Brandon Read (Chopper) is a self-styled, self appointed avenging knight for the oppressed, the weak and the enemies of truth, justice and fair play. Of course this is what he wants us to believe. In reality, he is a murderous thug with delusional albeit grand ideals.

This book can be read on many levels. As readers, however, we are positioned from the outset to see the book in a particular way: "From a civilized view, Read is a monster. The question is: What made him like that? Was he born or made that way? These are interesting points to ponder." After reading these lines from the editors, apart from the anemic nature/nurture theory they propose we ponder, I couldn't help returning to the word "civilized". As a so-called civilization, we are conditioned to see violence as something separate, an aspect of ourselves that is somehow unnatural, but can be unleashed when it suits us. As Read says in his book, "Posh people love gangters." What I find curious is Chopper (with a little marketing help) has positioned himself squarley in this tradition; and has made the image fit firmly in Australian popular culture.

In a way this book is a paradox: on the one hand it exalts violence to romantic proportions, then, weakly, condems it. "Don't do as I do, do as I say." "Don't live a life of extreme violence and crime like me, kids, but aren't I a really cool gangster?" Dangerous.

For those of you who would like to gain greater insight into Melbourne's underworld and prisons, then this book is for you. If you're the kind of person who enjoys graphic violence in the extreme, buy and read this book.

Otherwise, skip it.

Not bad, but definitely see the movie!
If you have just stumbled upon this book, you might be interested to know that there is now a movie about "Chopper" Reade, which is what got me to buy this book. Frankly, as between the book and the movie, I prefered the movie but that was entertainment afterall, and this is reality, presumably. 'Chopper, From the Inside' is the autobiographical reminiscences of one of Australia's most notorious criminals. This book actually helped to make Mr. Reade into something of a celebrity if not quite a hero in his native land. One may ask oneself how a sociopathic brute of a man with decidededly homicidal tendencies could attain such status? Well, I suppose that it helps that Mr. Reade has both the talent for telling a good story and a well-developed if dark sense of humor. It helps too that the war Chopper wages is primarily directed at other members of the criminal world and the flotsam and jetsam that float into and out of this world. In other words, he seems perfectly harmless so long as you, personally, don't cross him. In addition, if he is to be believed, he is loyal to a fault, a romantic when it comes to the honor of his mates and lady friends, and just generally the type of fellow you would want around if it ever came to a bit of bother. This isn't the kind of book that one walks away from with deep insights into the humanity that lies within all of us. Rather, it is a well told tale of murder, mayhem, casual violence, friendship, loyalty, love, and honor, by and about a fellow who knows better. It is this knowing better, that helps to explain why even when his activities go beyond the pale, the depravity seems logical and, in this protagonist's queer world, somehow fitting. This book was an interesting read, but not quite good enough for me to pay full retail for the second installment of his story, if that tells you anything.

I wouldn't Mess with Chopper!
Mark "Chopper" Read, Austrailia's most Notorious Criminal Character! You want True Crime? With a Twist? Pick up this, his Best selling memoir. His life, exploits, opinions, and a cultural history of the, in america almost unknown, world of the Austrailan Underworld. I Cringed, Sweated, Laughed and felt I was there throughout, from Chopper's very Personal & very Unique writing style. See the Film, it's Excellent! But read the story too! But don't stop there head on to Chopper 2!

Stereotypes lead to illogic
This is the ultimate demonstration of GIGO (garbage in; garbage out). They start with defining all readers as a stereotypical babyboomer husband and wife team who are so work driven they get nothing out of life. Authors as lawyer-savior-savant advise them to quit their jobs, or at least think as if they quit, tear up their credit cards and work the rest of their lives while spending all they have and dying broke. Not every baby boomer, much less average American, is what they describe as the party to whom they are giving advice. While there is good advice in some of the book, the idea of proceeding from a stereotypical description of a person leads to a conclusion that might be of value only to that stereotypical person. The conclusions and advice given cannot apply to most people, much less all people. There remain in the society hard workers and slackers; brain surgeons and dullards; computer programmers and ditch diggers; driven producers and fourth generation welfare recipients. Ovbiously, this book is not for food stamp recipients or clients of the welfare system. Never the less there is good advice that is worth taking and understanding. The credit card system, whereby one obligates himself to pay without the pain of shelling out hard earned cash, allows one to build debt without feeling it. This book is really for those much too busy to read it.

Redundant, repetitive, and sometimes he even repeats himself
My opinion of this book changed a few times while I was reading it.

First, I thought that this book was pretty good in that it gives a "radical" new approach to personal finance. I enjoyed this book because of this. It takes a topic that can be very vanilla in its ways, and gives a brand new thought process. I guarantee you that you will see some ideas that totally contradict what other personal finance consultants would say. For example, the author actually makes an argument for leasing instead of buying a car. Seeing that argument was a first for me, especially in this type of book.

Then, the author became very repetitive, and actually started to use examples and paragraphs that were previously used in this book. This was quite annoying.

Finally, the book finished it's 4 part radical plan, and began to add commentary about various topics in personal finance. After being annoyed, this section kind of got me back on track. Again, it was interesting to read opinions that were not necessarily mainstream, on topics that have been discussed to death in other books.

Overall, I would say that people should give this book a try. Beware of the redundancy, and go in with an open mind.

You won't read about having to live under your means, or about how accumulate the most wealth to give to your heirs. Instead, you will see how to make the most of you money, live at your means, die broke, and leave people a minimal estate. Through the use of annuities, insurance, and reverse mortgages, one can have money till the day they die. However, the book does come up short when it talks about actually implementing this program. For example, there was no mention on the typical price of an annuity, nor how one would actually purchase these annuities with a minimal savings account. If it was mentioned, it was given the justice it deserved.

Enjoy!

Financial Planning for Stunt Pilots
Die Broke is an extremely seductive book. Stephen Pollan's idea is that you'd be a fool to save your money for a rainy day. He says spend it now, which is contrary to what evey other personal finance expert advises. Take a round-the-world cruise, buy that new Mercedes, or better yet, lease it. This advice goes against the grain, and I found myself fascinated by such an original approach. It's tempting to adopt his methods and live for the present, but my advice is listen to the book, but don't take it too seriously.

A lot of errors
It looks very informative, however it has a lot of errors. Most of the examples do not work. The book has a CD providing an online registration and discussion form. I completed the registration, but there is nothing on the website.

Excellent Book for Serious Starter
Every book has his own target reader. It is impossible to have a universal 5-star book for every-level reader.

I had been looking for a book which can let me learn VB seriously as the starter for a while. Further, I already bought 2 books about VB and, but felt not good. However, this book is the book I was really looking for. Here is the features I feel good.

1. Very concise--The lines are the stuff I want to read and I can understand, no showing up, no joking, no academic garbage.

2. Very good balance between the explaining and code demonstration. This will make reading very effecient and effective.

3. With good exercise which is simple and not tricky and make you feel that you did learn something and you can do something.

I must say again, this maybe the garbage book for experienced VB developer, but it is the excellent to me!!

Great!
I've never programmed before, this book has taught me everything I needed to know and have made a few rather large programs now.

The examples are good (there is heaps of work to do!) and logical.

The book is big! - The online stuff I haven't worried about really.. It's just tests online - I dont know if you get a certificate or something at the end, but if you did it would be cool.

If you know nothing about VB6, this book is for you!

A Somalia Journal

Author: Mark Rausenberger

Average review score:

You suck-I'm great or How to win-my way by Barney Fife
Another book on the failings of others. I thought Bowden's book was a pathetic look into what's wrong with our military today. At least the guys pointing the fingers in his book were there and involved in the fight. You, you were on the cleanup crew monday night quarterbacking. Sadly the heroic actions of ALL those involved, from the beginning to the end of the operation, have been marginalized or cast in doubt. There was plenty of blame to go around. For veteran soldiers as Delta Force to belittle those they fought along side shows a lack of grace (and memory). Instead of showing leadership they showed contempt. Now back to you. Write about something you have first hand experience with and remember this: Pee-on medic is not = to brilliant commander.

A young soldier's journal
Mark Rausenberger's personal journal of his six-month tour of duty in Somalia was an interesting and provocative read. His eye opening account, although peppered with sarcasm, gave the reader a glimpse of a spirited young man, who willingly served his country. Bravery in the face of adversity is admirable and it is likely that Rausenberger's strength and sense of humor benefited his fellow soldiers.

The intent and reason I wrote "A Somalia Journal"
I have read the most recent review of my experiance in Somalia. I will make a few short points. This book was written in the attempt to give the average reader an insight into the medics role in the military. There are a multitude of books, movies etc. that cover the combat arms soldiers experiance. There are only a handful written from the medics viewpoint. All though I have a sarcastic streak in my personality, I would be hard pressed to believe that anyone spending any amount of time in the military does not have "Cluster F***" stories to tell. I felt they had a place in my book. I wrote this book several years ago and in hindsight I realize it could be improved on. But that was how I saw things at the time and I can make no apology for that. If someone else has a story to tell I would encourage them to take the time and write it down. Then they too can put forth the effort to get a manuscript published. Everyone has a story to tell.

Disgusted, too
Fleischer desribes the awful conditions that these kids live in and then places the blame on the police, Division of Family Services, the Juvenile Court system, and finally the "entire community of Kansas City." He not only was irresponsible for his failure to hotline these kids, he actually condones their drug dealing. He said he didn't see any other option they had. Give me a break! There are four social service agency willing to help within walking distance of these kids and Fleischer never mentions that.

Overall, a poorly written book by an irresponsible professor.

Disgusted!
Fleisher vividly describes the abusive treatment the children of these gansters received from their parents and their ganster friends, the filth they lived in, the lack of food and the overall dangerous living conditions. Did he report this to Family Services? Professor Fleisher is a mandated reporter and conducting research for a best seller should not discount his responsibility to those children in helping to make them safe. I am appalled that a Criminal Justice professor would write with such coldness and lack of concern: "It always took me a week to 10 days before I stopped recalling in my mind's eye the sight of Amy and RoniRo sequestered with Teresa and Kevin." pg. 97 I hope Professor Fleisher sleeps well knowing these children will soon be teenagers and his contribution to their well-being.

I'm a sucker for Oprah-esque sociology books
I rarely ever come across "page turners" when it comes to reading sociology works -- but I was not able to put Dead End Kids down. This book is a real gem because it does two great things -- 1) puts one rawly in touch with other's lives, and 2) sets forth social policy suggestions based on the research. Having stumbled across this book in the library by random, I now plan to reading more of Fleisher's work.

A Great Disappointment
Having read and studied the author's book carefully, the most accurate way I know how to describe it is simply as "factually challenged history." That there are many omitted facts from Nesbitt's book one wonders why the attempt was made in the first place. If someone is looking for a well reasoned treatise on the Lee-Stuart issues at play in the Gettysburg campaign, they need look elsewhere.

A Very Poor Defense of an Indefensible Action
Nebitt's SABER AND SCAPEGOAT redefines the depths to which an author bent on historical advocacy is willing to stoop. Nesbitt's attempt to explain why "Jeb" Stuart should not be blamed for any part of the Confederate failure in the 1863 Pennsylvania campaign could not pass History 101, let alone be considered as serious military prose. The author's incredibly narrow criteria that employs only selective use of some portions of certain documents, while ignoring vital evidence such as the historical context in which ALL of the orders were written, Lee's important restraining orders, Stuart's own actions at Haymarket, Dover and elsewhere throughout the ill-fated eight day "raid" that show he was following an agenda all his own, and much much more, reduce this work to a poorly organized, intellectually shabby exercise. With such a spotty and incomplete use of all the available evidence, Nesbitt's work should be viewed with greatest amount of caution and skepticism possible.

Who's to blame? Not Stuart
It's about time someone has taken the initiative to defend Stuart's rightful actions during the Gettysburg Campaign. Nesbitt's book explains fully what I have known all along. Lee had cavalry with him and failed to use them. That is Lee's fault. End of story. These people that feel the need to keep the blame from Lee and continually find "scapegoats" need to get over it. This was an excellent book that I will recommend to anyone who wants the real truth of the battle of Gettysburg.

Adding to the previous negative reviews, how can one take seriously a book which, on page 2, cannot even get the location of Whitefield's birth correct? Stout makes him a son of Bristol instead of a son of Gloucester (35 miles to the north). If he makes such a mistake this early what confidence can one have in the rest of the book?

Whitefield as Actor and Promoter
Harry Stout does a marvelous job with the difficult task of assessing George Whitefield's career with respect to his skills as a dramatist and promoter. Before reading this book I was very skeptical of the often undue emphasis historians in recent years have attempted to place on style rather than content to revivalists' preaching. But I found Stout's arguement to be very convincing. This is a very helpful volume for anyone interested in George Whitefield, the Great Awakening, or American religion.

wonderful
What a great book! Stout is a wonderful historian and it shows
