Middle Eastern Sketches
Published in Paperback by University Press of America (05 June, 1997)
Author: Mark N. Katz

Used price: $14.00
Average review score:

An enjoyable read and an excellent reference!
'Middle Eastern Sketches' is a highly enjoyable text recounting the travels of an American academic and international relations expert through the Middle East. It is a superb reference for any individual interested in the region. Katz delivers cultural insight from a Western standpoint through anecdotal recaps supported by sociopolitical and ethnographic explanations. His balance of humor and seriousness make for a good backdrop to the characters he introduces throughout his journeys. From careening down the Nile in an attitude-run Egyptian cruiser to an unusual primer in Sufism in Iran, Katz engages individual Middle Easterners from each end of the socioeconomic spectrum, describing their lives and views of America in a clear and understandable manner. A constant theme, anti-Americanism, arises again and again in conversations he has with individuals throughout the region. His answers to these people are impressive, grounded in fact and logic, and fair in their delivery. He also details the hinderances and pitfalls of an American travelling through the Middle East, especially with the express interest of politically-oriented research. Aside from the general (yet ever important) linguistical and cultural hurdles, his outlines of dealing with visa officials, university heads, and government bureaucrats offer an insight into the difficulties inherent in internationally-oriented research. It is an especially essential text for students of international relations as it would undoubtedly be one of the few books that is as informative, in both a formal and an informal way, as it is entertaining. For those not students of international relations, it adds color and a personal relativity to the otherwise colorless Middle Eastern affairs which Americans find themselves subjected to daily. I highly recommend it and feel confident that it will satisfy any taste.

One Man, Dispossessed
This powerful follow-up to The Murphy Stories convinced me in no uncertain terms that Costello is one of the greatest short story writers of this century. Middle Murphy actually brackets the previous story collection by following Michael Murphy from his childhood trauma of doing his first friend his first favor and receiving his first punch, to a completely dispossessed man throwing his own first punch in a compelling and defining act of self-reification. Costello uses his familiar style of color iconology (reminiscent of Garcia Lorca) and his phenomenal poetic sense--recreating a painful specificity of voice--translates high energy moments into whirls of confusion and a constantly throbbing sense of iterative loss. All that, coupled with his ability to create complete unreliability in his narrator while leaving all the clues for the reader to decipher this coded language continue to remind me of Joyce's Stephen Daedaelus and Nabokov's Humbert Humbert. Perhaps the final testament to Costello's skill is that Murphy, for as self-destructive and despicable as he is, remains a sympathetic character who the reader can't help but cheer while watching in horror as he shreds up his life. It the Mid-Western American Tragedy at its finest.

The Millennium Hotel (Wesleyan Poetry (Cloth))

A Must
Again, a must; Mark Rudman continues to write some of the most daring poems today. The juxtaposition of prose with verse forces the reader to ask how poetry should be read--what constitutes a line of poetry? The lyrical beauty inherent in the poems included in the second installment of Rudman's anthology defies any simple answer, and makes for a compelling read.

More than just a price book
This book is more than just a price book. It uses a series of questions to help you nail down just what you are looking at. In the BASICS section you find the different ingredients in Water-glass, Soda glass, Potash glass, and lead crystal. The book is small enough that I carry this with me.

Some of the highlights are:

Uses a unique question-and -answer approach to help you identify and date genuine antique glass

Deals with fakes, copies, condition and other factors that may confuse even experienced collectors

Analyses typical items that collectors can find in shops and auction houses

Gives Guidelines to values

Contains a wealth of background information, including an extensive glossary

Is a thorough introductory course for the beginner and also a superb refresher for those with some collecting experience.

A must have for collectors of Antique English Silver
This book is a must have for anyone who collects antique English silver. Not as comprehensive as a lot of others I have seen which is actually a plus since it fits comfortably in your pocket when you go antiquing. I keep my copy next to my computer so I have it handy while surfing the silver listings on eBay. Well worth the price.

A very good book for Natural Therapy Basics
I found this book very informative on different therapies for common problems - some of them which i wasn't even aware of. I bought it as a novice for herbal remedies and aromatherapy but am now learning Tai Chi from a professional and practice my Yoga. It is a very good book for those interested in natural healing processes.

Very interesting read!
The concepts in this book continue to make me contemplate my beliefs. Pally offers a cutting-edge look at the relationship between neuroscience and psychoanalysis. Though it is elegantly filled with detail, the concepts are easily accessible and engaging. Certainly a must read for anyone interested in the conscience and the brain.

Best Dublin Guide Yet
I have read several guides to Dublin and the Rough Guide is the best by far. It is packed full of information in, and unlike many of the other guides, it includes information on off-the-beaten path destinations and day trips outside of Dublin.

It has lots of practical information that the first-time traveler to Dublin should know, like what buses you can take from the airport, the (new) location of the Dublin Tourist Office, and the costs of public transport.

The style of the Rough Guide is very enjoyable as well. Instead of just a few recommendations for rooms and restaurants, the guide includes many suiting virtually all tastes and budgets.

Highly recommended.
