Excellent bio,seperating myth from stereotype
Satchel Paige is an enigmatic figure in american histroy. Mention his name, people inevitably think of the negro leagues,or thta terrible bingo long movie. In fact, Paige was ,in many repects, the first modern ballplayer. He played for a percentage of the gate, would only pitch a couple of innings in these contests, had no compuction about jumping from team to team{or country to country}The minstel show, stephifetchit aura that he calculated with the all too eager white press was, of course, a huge ruse. He was a sometimes bitter man{quite understandably so}He knew, instinctively, that he was the best pitcher in the world{although, curiosly, his peers voted Smokey Joe williams better in a 1950 vote in the Pittsburgh Courrier} He despsed the Jim Crow laws, and what he had to do to get around them. HIs civil rights stands were taken in the 20's 30's and 40's, when such things often meant death. He pitched for what might have been the greatest team of all time{the Pittsburgh crawfords of the early 30's] Dimaggio called him ethe toughest pitcher he ever hit against. All of these nuggets are in this book. Mr. Ribowsky did a fine job here. Paige is a figure who should be celebrated for what he was:an american original,a species often sighted but rarely seen. A wonderful book!

Demi-God
After reading this book, I am utterly convinced that Satchel Paige is as much of a baseball legend as a Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. This book not only entertains but it fascinates, so much that I would'nt be suprised if someone mistook this biography for a peice of baseball folklore or a non fictitious work designed to capture the imaginations of baseball fans. This book portrays the life of Robert Leroy Satchel Paige in a most interesting way. In some cases he stands biggerthan life portrayed as a demi-god in the face of the gods of Major League Baseball and in some cases his mortality is revealed in the very midst of his immortality, and this is what makes this portrayal so unique.

Doomed Bourgeois in Love : Essays on the Films of Whit Stillman

Scholarly Examination of the Stillman Films
This is a very good collection of scholarly essays examining the films of Whit Stillman. Presumably, this mean the films are being studied in film classes in our colleges and universities, which means academia is giving these films the respect they deserve.

Essays look at the Stillman's ability to persuade typically reluctant audiences to accept many of the values and conventions educated people are usually taught to scorn. They range from American foreign policy in the Cold War, to disco music, to the writings of Dale Carnegie.
While obviously written for use as a film studies textbook, these essays are also easy enough to understand and enjoy for the average reader as well.

Here's hoping the book soon becomes outdated as Stillman turns out a series of additional films. But until then, these essays look at three of the most brilliant movies of the 1990s. Enjoy them, and then enjoy reading about them, too.

The WASP Woody Allen
Critical reaction to the films of Whit Stillman seems to be divided between those who detest his sympathetic treatment of "snotty preppies" and "yuppie scum" and those who find his characters' ironic dialogue so intelligently amusing that they have dubbed him "the WASP Woody Allen." If like me you are among the latter group rather than the former, this book is for you. The nine main essays are written by academics--but only a few of the writers seem to have a background in film criticism, and the essays have an elegance and freshness all too rare in academia today. These are the kinds of essays Cleanth Brooks or Robert Penn Warren would have written had those old New Critics turned their attention to film rather than poetry. And what was surprising even for a Stillman fan like me is that they have sifted the films so carefully that there now can be no doubt: Whit Stillman is not merely an intelligent comic writer/director, he is a major artist.

Unique to say the least.
Dorella is a great read... couldn't put it down until I finished it!

I really enjoyed this book! Garland writes great stories.
This is the first of several great books written by Mark Garland. All the ingredients for a good story are in here: action, adventure, strong plot, strong characters. I would love to see more books in this series.

A Dove of the East

A Wonderful Collection of Stories
Helprin truly is, as a friend observed, one of our greatest living writers. These stories are sublime and affecting. Katrina, Katrin' is as moving a story as I have read, and A Dove of the East does extra duty - it's a thought-provoking examination of the human condition on one level, and a look back in time at the Middle East.

These stories do what good stories should: Make their impact during and immediately after reading, and then reappear in your consciousness at a later time, triggered by a tangential event perhaps, or an emotional shard.

Helprin's short stories are lovely.
If you are wondering if it is worth while to read one of Helprin's mammoth novels (they are all, uhm, Big), you can get an idea from reading either a book in the Swan Lake trilogy (hard-to-find children's books, illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg), or one of his short story collections. I cherish his short stories, and this collection is one of my favorites. The variety of time, place, and subject matter, the vividness of the telling, and the kindness and sympathy he gives his subjects - all make the stories worthwhile.

Mark Helprin's novels, and many of his short stories, make me feel as though constellations are coruscating in my mind. Richard Powers's novels, e.g. The Gold Bug Variations, also have this effect on me. I wish the whole world would read their books!

Perfect For Every First Aid-Kit
The best all-around medical emergency book has got to be this one. It dispels any medical myths you might have, and it will help you identify what is really wrong with you, instead of worrying about what it might be.

Just about every common medical emergency is in there, from the correct way to treat a nosebleed, to how to figure out if your child has appendicitis, to knowing when back pain is serious. I wouldn't go on a family vacation without it, and it personifies my motto: "Always Be Prepared."

This book can save your life!
This book should be on everyone's shelf. At Home, at work, in a restaurant- even in every taxi in America. Bravo Dr. Fischer- and thank you for putting out this outstanding little book.

Terry Bolin, Springdale, AR

Excellent mental approach towards the sport of drag racing.
This book is an excellent approach towards the sport of drag racing from a mental standpoint. Numerous examples, demonstrations, and mental tactics that are keys to success are reviewed, and they work! Also there are chassis tips, sponsorship techniques, and other aspects discussed. If you're a drag racer, or even just a spectator, this book make a great reading material for a true insight ito the mind of a drag racer.

A fine free-market textbook
Readers of Thomas Sowell's excellent _Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide to the Economy_ may want to tackle this fine textbook next. Skousen presents basic economic concepts and principles in clear, crisp prose, and his presentation is the next level up from Sowell's: whereas Sowell eschews graphs and charts altogether, Skousen uses them sparingly and well in order to introduce, illustrate, and explain how markets work.

The text is suitable for anyone with approximately a high-school education (and I'd love to see it used in actual high schools). As such, it's well adapted for self-study.

Economics Finally Made Sense in the Real World
Reading Economic Logic gave me a profound new understanding of how economics applies in the real world, especially in business and personal finance.

My college economics courses, filled with perplexing theories like the paradox of thrift, GDP and Keynesian fiscal policy, were completely refuted in this excellent free-market textbook. Economic Logic focused on important, real issues like business profit-loss statements, entrepreneurship and the advantage of saving -- something my college professors never even touched.

Although I am not currently a student or professor, I thoroughly enjoyed learning economics "right." I have found it helpful in gaining more insight in running my business -- as well as the wisdom of fiscal conservatism in our government policies.

I highly recommend professors use this text in their economics classes. And students, if your professors don't use this text, get it for yourself so you can really understand the concepts and principles of sound economics.

Software architect
This is an excellent book. Not only is it clear the authors are extremely knowledge but the organization of the book makes it easy to find the information you need quickly. The recipes not only provide the needed information to solve problems but also lead you to better overall design decisions. Also the intoduction to XDoclet was appreciated.

Excellent quick reference
This book does just what it claims. I don't need to read the whole thing to learn something new, I can open to any recipe. I just bought this book, and I really like it. I keep it handy while I am coding. It has a great index that makes it easy to find what I need. Definitely recommended.

Still A great resource after all these years
This book is a definite must have for the true Empire Deluxe Fan. It does a fantastic job explaining how the different models work and has some wonderful tables on optimizing production.

It also gives various strategies and insights by the designers.

The "modem play" sections may be dated, but with Killer Bee Software's new release of Empire Deluxe, it still will prove quite helpful.

If this book is still out there, you want to buy it.

This book tells you everything you've been wondering
Having played Strategic Conquest on the MAC and the original Empire game, then later buying Empire Deluxe, I was thrilled to get a copy of this book through Amazon.com's used item web site.
