The only book to question Asia's "rise" before 1997
Mark Berger and Douglas Borer have produced an edited volume which merits significant praise in the scholarly community. The central theme of the text is that most Western "visions" of Asia are highly contestable. Both the editors and the contributing authors believe that mainstream perceptions and discourses regarding future political stablity and economic prosperity (and the concurrent rise to global power) of East Asia are too simplistic and overly optomistic - ignoring the vast diversity, the potential for domestic unrest, and the possiblity for conflict amongst countries within the Asia region.

Most notably, it is the only such book to question the so-called "Pacific Century" published before the traumatic economic crisis that infected the region in 1997. Although some chapters are less powerful than others, for the greater part the editors and authors have succeeded where the overwhelming majority of social scientists fail: their attempt at future gazing has proven to be be largely correct - a success last seen by Paul Kennedy's now-classic work "The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers" (1987). This is a book definately worth buying.

wish I could afford to buy it.
thumbed thru this great book at Barns and Noble and was hoping it would be less expensive on the net. I knew Prof. Carleton and took his history class at LSU. The book "The River" is seriously the best I have seen considering the real history of Baton Rouge as I know it to be. All of the "recent" characters that are noted are real to me. Mr. Lloyd Collett was my neighbor back in the 50's when he first invisioned the company that he founded. United Companies was born on Eugene Street in the 50's and has blown into a mega company. Others noted in the book are just as acurate to my knowledge and I've known them all at one time or the other. It feels like my history in this city - from 1942 to present. Prof. Carleton was in command of a wealth of history regarding this area - politically and otherwise. I wish he had not been taken at such an early age. The pictures are beyond great. Have one for me Tom - wherever you are.

Reading River Stories like visiting a favorite neighbor
River Stories is a timeless and universally appealing collection of articles. Although the writings are set in Northeastern Minnesota and reveal personal feelings of the author and his family, they can be easily sensed and understood by a person not familiar with this particular geographical location. Just as a person does not have to live in Hannibal, Missouri, to appreciate Mark Twain's writings, the reader residing outside of the Arrowhead of Minnesota can certainly enjoy this collection. These stories are comforting and pleasant to read. Unconsciously, the reader is drawn to the author and his family, as well as the land and the life along the river that they love. Reading the stories is visiting a friendly neighbor and his family in their home. The stories are well written and enjoyable to read, and the "down-home" folks in River Stories leave the reader with a comfortable smile on his face.

THE book to start learning about industrial robotics
Having read this book from cover to cover, I can easily conclude that this book is surely THE start for anybody who wants to learn more about industrial manipulators. As a student in Mechatronics at The Fontys Hogeschool Eindhoven, I was supprised by the simplicity in witch the authors explain real 'hardcore' manipulator problems. The book starts with a very good basic explanation of motion represenatation witch are common used in manipulator engineering. To understand the book, you are to read all the chapters after eachother. The best thing about the book is that the methods and techniques are very 'compatible' to other resources (unlike most of the book about manipulators). Another very usefull thing is the ammount of references given after each chapter for the people who never stop thinking when they are interrested...

A great book just like the others in the series!
I have every book in the series and when I heard that a new one was out I started saving to buy it.Willie and his grandfather were coming home from a fair and got hit with a rock slide. After praying about their problem they fell asleep. The next night they heard voises. The next day a sheriff unit came and rescued them. I like it because it shows how we can pray to God and He will help us. It is a very good book and it keeps you in suspense. I recomend it to everyone.

The original and still the best
Roget was born in England of French parentage and made the development of an English Language Thesaurus his life's work. He gained little recognition in his own lifetime but the results of his endeavours have been diligently embellished and supplemented by generations of academics so that now, when we need another word for the one in our mind, when we are seeking a word but it won't come to mind, when we want to put together that "catch phrase" that will bring our customers running to our door, we reach instinctively for Roget's Thesaurus. They're even a standard part of the kit for most Word Processing programs.

Organized both by subject matter and alphabetically, my Thesaurus is a pleasure to dive into. If I have one problem with it, it's that, having found the word I want, I keep reaing for the pure joy of the language. It's my firm belief that Roget has help keep the English language a rich, multi-cultural language that is understood worldwide.
