Back Down to Earth: The Development of Space Policy for Nasa During the Jimmy Carter Administration
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (March, 2001)
Author: Mark Damohn
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:

NASA history of the 1970s - EXCELLENT
This is a long overdue book for those interested in the history of NASA during the 1970s. The author, Mark Damohn, really catches the spirit of the times. The book is very well written and obviously a lot of research went into this book. The book is primarily about Jimmy Carter and NASA, which from an academic standpoint nothing has ever been written about. Back Down to Earth dramtically shows the relationship between the White Hose and NASA during an important transition time in NASA's history between the Moon Landings and the building of the Space Shuttle. This book is a must for anyone interested in NASA, space policy and the history of the 1970s. It is a book that is an easy read for the interested general public and book that will be respected by those in the academic community.

Ball Lightning: An Unsolved Problem in Atmospheric Physics
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (March, 2000)
Author: Mark Stenhoff
Amazon base price: $99.00
Average review score:

Still a mysterious phenomenon
Ball lightning obviously is an extremely rare event. As in the case of other rare phenomena, the investigator is dependent on reports of casual witnesses, because systematic observing programs are not possible. The reports collected over many years include reliable as well as doubtful information. Stenhoff gives a good sample of reports, photos and descriptions. These clearly show the range of observed phenomena and the questions which remain open. The summary of sightings and the review of theories to explain the variety of observations makes the book very valuable, particularly as there is no comparable recent publication on this topic. I also appreciate the list of references (up to 1998 publications) which allows to look for details regarding reports as well as theoretical papers. All together: highly recommended.

An Introduction to Police and their Jobs
Barney lovers will appreciate this very reasonably priced, factual book about the work our police do. Photographs that include Barney and BJ enhance the informative text. As a teacher of young children I very much appreciated the warning for children to tell a grown-up if they ever see a gun and that they are not toys. I recommend this book for parents who want to give a positive outlook about police to their children!

Fun with Animals!
My son recently got this book as a gift and he has a good time with it. We like it because he recognizes many of the animals and has learned many new ones. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to introduce animals to their kids or is planning a trip to the zoo.

Gently Teaches Youngsters to Share
As BabyBop finds herself in many situations with her adorable friends, she learns that she can share her most treasured possession. Our son received this gift before the birth of his first baby brother. What we like most about it is that BabyBop discovers on her own that she can share.

With its typical "Barney" style, the characters are gentle and respectful of one another. BabyBop is not coerced into sharing nor is she told that she must share "or else".

It is a great book, particularly timely when a new sibling is on the way.

CAPITAL BASEBALL
This book is an excellent visual record of Washington baseball in it's own right but is outstanding as a companion piece to Tom Deveaux's The Washington Senators, 1901-1971 (a top notch history containing no pictures). It's great to put a face to a name from a bygone era. This book is chock full of historical photos (all b&w) that extend beyond just the Senators. After all this glowing praise, why do I rate it only 4 stars? I received it a week before Ted Williams' passing. In going back through it a week later, I was struck at the gloss job that the expansion Senators (1961-1971) received. At 14 pages (out of 128), the Senators of my youth are barely represented here. One photo each of Ted Williams and Frank Howard? Reprehensible!!! Hondo isn't even given an action photo (of him crushing another homer) but a tame head shot. Sort of reminds me of James R. Hartley's Washington's Expansion Senators (1961-1971). All in all, a must have that could have been so much better.

Baseball Umpires' Guidebook: Proper Positioning
Published in Spiral-bound by Referee Enterprises Inc (January, 1996)
Authors: Mark R. Ambrosius, Scott Ehert, Matt Bowen, and Scott Ehret
Amazon base price: $32.95
Average review score:

Focussed, detailed look at umpire positioning
For beginning and experienced umps alike, this book provides detailed positioning and play coverage descriptions for every possible game situation. There's no discussion of rules, analysis of play, or information on mechanics -- just where to stand and which ump is responsible for the call. Two-man positioning (i.e., for amateur baseball) only -- three- and four-man positioning is covered in a later volume.

Very good text book of immunology
I found this a very suitable text for the teaching of entry-level immunology as it is very clearly written and also amply illustrated with excellent graphics and flow diagrams. It has been a very well received set text (adopted since 1999) for the two immunology modules that we teach in our polytechnic diploma course in medical laboratory technology. My students, in particular, very much like the short summaries which are in point form for easy revision. One possible drawback is a missing chapter on commonly used techniques in diagnostic immunology - whilst this book is not intended as a manual of laboratory methods, we would have loved to read about the various principles & applications, explained in the authors' succinct style, thus making it a comprehensive text.
