Great Book
I bought this book in the mid 80's and I loved from the first page to the last.It contains letters of Advice from a father to a his son covering every aspect of life.Almost 15 years and belive it or not i still keep it next to my bed and read a letter or two every evening.Great staff and i sincerely recomed it.

Great Advice
This book is advice a father ( the author) gave his son over the years of his upbringing. My father was never much of a talker, so when I first read this book in college, it explained alot of things I wish he had been able to tell me about. Now that I am having my own kids, I want to read it again so I be a great father too. This is a book you will keep and hand down (if you can find it) !

excellent advice for young men and women
My father, a successful businessman, has long advised me and my sons to read this short but very worthwhile book. I have finally done so and have had my 17 year old read it. I highly recommend it for its common sense approach to the problems and opportunities which young people face

Excellent Reading
This book grabs your attention from the very first paragraph and doesn't let it go until you are finished reading it! The way the author weaves biblical prophecy, fiction, mystery and current events into the storyline makes it so believable that you have to wonder... what if?....

sure to be a blockbuster!
Entertaining and provocative...and positively eerie in light of current world happenings. The "big plot" behind the story is incredibly clever. The dialogue is tight with good wordsmithing. I hope we'll be hearing much more from author Martin Stone.

A story to really reach into your mind
Once you start into this book, you cannot put it down. The way the author weaves the Revelation predictions into our everyday lives, leaves you in a daze wondering if this is not really the true interpretation of scripture. An extremely amazing twist to what religion has taught.

The Mark of the Cat
This book is short, and what is there deserves five stars. However, the story feels unfinished. Hynkkel, rejected to the role of servitude by his family and despairing over the murder of his pet cat, is forced into a manhood ritual by his father. He emerges from this test of survival with a new grace and self confidence and new friends, including a feline, but still finds himself on the outskirts of society. He is dismayed when he is seemingly forced into a new and surprising path. Just when the Essence smiles upon him and he appears to be a winner, the book ends with more questions than answers in the reader's mind. Once again Andre Norton's writing is superb. Hopefully, there will be a sequel, otherwise the book is as unsatisfying as decaf.

Where is the sequel?
this story was about a young boy, who defying all odds and with a little magic came out as emperor, however the evil was not totally overcome. So Andre Norton, one of my favorite authors. I ask where is the sequel?

Initial Fantasy
One of the first fantasies that I read and I have to say one of the best. I felt that the story could have continued but I think it was still a good book.

"Mark of the Stone" teaches while it entertains.
"Mark of the Stone" is written in a modern context, but the style and presentation are reminiscent of Tribal storytellers, making the message of the story ageless. Like the stories told by elders to grandchildren, this story has a strong underlying message and it is told in a very entertaining way. I highly recommend this book for the young or old.

As Engaging As The Harry Potter Books
Rabiah Yazzie Seminole's "Mark of the Stone" really got me going. The writing style is terrific and really reminded me a lot of the "Harry Potter" books with it's detailed description and fantasy elements.

I think this is a great book for Indian kids and their parents. The book has a lot of great messages to impart -- things we ALL need to hear above the noise of the modern world.

Get it, read it and enjoy! I'm a fan!

Mark of the Stone
Rabiah Seminole has written a wounderfully enlightening book with a message for everyone. It lets you use your imagination as you follow the journey of a young boy who learns about himself and the world that we live in, the good and the bad. Once you start reading this book it is so engrossing that you can't put it down, you want to see what is going to happen next as the journey continues. I highly recomend this book to all, young and old alike.

Wonderful book, wonderful series
If pressed to mention a series of books I love more than all others, I would have to cite Library of America; this is not because I am a fan of stictly American literature, but because I have never seen a series so dedicated--and so good at--a mission of preserving and presenting a body of literature of such greatness in such a worthy manner. Perhaps some day there will be a Library of Russia, Library of France, Library of England, etc.

Twain is a delight and underrated by modern critics; here lies a good collection of some of his fine works. Especially good are Life on the Mississippi and Pudd'nhead Wilson, along with the indesposable Huckleberry Finn. Also contained is Tom Sawyer, which I cannot praise, but I cannot deny its position as a classic and its deservence to be included in this volume.

A Grand View of A Grandeur
Once they were absolute rulers - laws made to meet their needs, unstinting respect their due, their commands obeyed without hesitation or reluctance. They are vanished today, the last of their lineage in tourist boats, unremarked, nearly unremembered. Nearly two centuries ago, the Mississippi steamboat pilot was a legendary figure. Mark Twain conveys us to that time and environment in one of his finest writings. Life On the Mississippi is a superb descriptive achievement in portraying the river scene , but also conveys vivid images of the people living on and along it. It's an outstanding example of painting with both a broad brush and enhancing with fine detail.

Beginning with a history of European "discovery" and exploration of this mighty stream, Twain moves us into his own history as a "cub" pilot. Perhaps no-one before or since has so effectively exposed what it meant to "tackle the river" in learning to safely man the wheel of a river steamer. From his first astonishment at discovering he must "get a notebook and write down" the names of all the points, landmarks, snags and "crossings" through the realization that most of that information would change before his next trip, he comes to understand that a pilot must "know the river" with full dedication. As we follow him through the process he introduces us to the river's wonders and the people it supports. He explains the ranking of pilots, steamboat captains, mates and "hands." None of his observations are boring, from the most mundane river condition to dramatic events such as boiler explosions.

Those fearing that Twain's information may be "outdated" may take heart. Much of the book views his early days on the river from the vantage point of thirty years later. He is reminiscing, but Twain's excellent style brings us with him into each memory. Our feelings readily align with his as he guides us. The latter part of the book is a collection of images of the river valley in the latter part of the 19th Century as Twain revisits the river after a long absence. The only real distinction, apart from the automobile, which did for the railroad what the latter did to the steamboat, are the statistics of agriculture and industry. His descriptions of towns, villages and cities differ little from what we might encounter duplicating his journey.

During this pilgrimage, Twain brings in numerous anecdotal episodes to further sparkle his descriptive and historical accounts. Although all are entertaining at one level or another, several stand out as representatives of Twain's inventive genius. Ritter's Narrative is among the grimmest of Twain's essays in any of his publications. It's a story of a long-term quest for vengeance with a bizarre outcome. A far lighter note is struck with the story of a sleepwalking steamboat pilot. An account of the pilots organizing a "protective association" is told with light humour, not quite obscuring the serious nature of its intent.

In all, no matter that this book's focus lies in a period stretching back nearly two centuries, the writing is vigorous enough to capture today's readers. The history is related with Twain's always lively skill, something as mundane as a sunset is imparted with his special verve. This book can be taken up repeatedly; for reminders of a lost era, for an examination of values or, the best reason of all, for a prime example of what North America's greatest writer could produce in his passion for narrative.

ACCESSIBLE TWAIN IN A HANDSOME BOOK
This is the kind of book reserved for the word "volume" and by that I mean it carries all the weight of Twain's most accessible works. All of the Library of America books carry this weight but this was one of the first and deservedly so. I'm reviewing this book not just on its contents but on its sheer style and scholarly editing, its fitness in the hand (or lap), the way it will look on your bookshelf and the 10-point Linotron Galliard printing that makes the very act of reading much easier.
Now, the contents cannot be less magnificent as the river all these writings have in common. Funny, wise and as much a part of 19th century American history as you'll find anywhere, these are great examples of the best American writing in one "volume" by one of the world's most recognized authors. No self-respecting booklover should be without it.

Excellent reference to Twain and his world!
Elvis, the Beatles and Marilyn Monroe have received the A to Z treatment in which every aspect of their lives and works have been reordered alphabetically, so it was only a matter of time that the mania would spread to lesser figures, in this case Mark Twain, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. This series of three books, originally published by Facts On File and now updated and reprinted by Oxford University Press, combines facts culled from the writers' lives and works, shakes them up thoroughly, and recasts them into easily locatable entries. The result is an addictive pleasure, a page-turning odyessy for anyone interested in learning more about their favorite writer. Mark Twain's fans will rightfully go ga-ga over this 500-page slab of scholarship, research and story telling. All of Twain's major works are discussed, as well as many of his short stories, speeches, newspaper articles, essays and unpublished works. Photos of the great man himself and his contemporaries are thrown in alongside illustrations from the novels. A year-by-year multi-columned chronology charts Twain's personal, professional and public lives. In short, the breadth and depth of this book is astonishing.

It is a masterpiece of the life and times of Mark Twain!
This book helped me extensively during my search for biographical information about Mark Twain. It gives great insight to the life and times of Mark Twain. It contains anything and everything one would care to know about Samuel Clemens and his metamorphosis to one of the greatest writers ever known; Mark Twain.

Fine reference.
Mark Twain is justly regarded as the first modern American novelist, but he was also a fabulous character; one of the most prominent figures of the 19th century, who seems to have gone everywhere and met everyone, and wrote about it all.
The present work is a fitting introduction to his life and works for those new to Twain, and a boon companion for those deep into the pleasures of one of the original minds of American literature.
Rasmussen has alphabetically arranged the major works with synopses, analyses of characters, people, places, and events Clemens knew, and more, with illustrations, chronology, list of Twain's works, reading list, and an admirable index.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in Twain, American writing, humor, or 19th century life and times.

Mastered by the Clock: Time, Slavery, and Freedom in the American South (Fred W. Morrison Series in Southern Studies)

Author: Mark M. Smith

Compelling.
I have to admit a little bit of a bias. Dr. Smith was my teacher at the University of South Carolina, and his class was so skillfully taught that I felt compelled to read his published work.

In a marketplace flooded with Civil War studies, Dr. Smith's distinguishes itself in two ways: 1)With its erudition, a quality missing from many Civil War analyses. 2) The precision of his study. By choosing time as his subject, Dr. Smith rises above the pack of Civil War literature, and creates something thoroughly new.

An original and accessible look at time and slavery.
This remarkable first book by Dr. Smith has already won two of the history profession's highest awards. The historical society named it the best book of history for 1997 and it shares the prestigious Avery O. Craven Award for the most original book on the Civil War era. Smith's observations of the slaves' adjustment to and manipulation of measured time are fascinating. The portrait of plantation life and the effect of the normalization of time on the South will be a revelation to anyone interested in Southern history.

One of the most important books on the South this decade..
Mark Smith has produced a masterpiece. His mastery of theory and primary material is breath-taking. His willingness to take on such established scholars as Geonovese (and convince this reviewer that he is correct and they were wrong) is the mark of a confident historian.

Would that all works of history were as intellectually stimulating as this. MASTERED BY THE CLOCK is an example of the historian's craft at its best--something rarely seen these days.

One of our favorites...find the cat!
4 ("and three quarters!") year old Maria and I love this book. It's one of our favorites. The illustrations are great, the rhymes are clever, and there is a cat to find in each picture!

Get the whole series!
The "Maxi" books are a wonderful series for girls and boys. Our daughter first fell in love with the taxi dog and his friend Jim when she was 4. Don't miss out on all three books in this series: "The Adventures of Maxi," "Maxi The Hero" and "Maxi The Star" (when he goes to Hollywood to shoot a commercial). Great art work accompanies the fun stories.

My five-year-old daughter loves this book. So do I.
My five-year-old daughter loves this book. So do I. It's great to read, has a nice rhythm to it, and the art work is fantastically surreal. There's a moral to the story but the authors don't lay it on too thick. In fact, "crime doesn't pay" is just part of the plot. The real theme is that life in the big city can be bright, cheerful, intriguing, and there is a certain comfort in a routine job peppered with small adventures

A Must-Read!
As a student of Taoism, I have searched for a book that embodies the awareness of the need to address the human body as a whole entity; mind, body, intellect, and emotions , as well as the scientific approach to nutritional evidence that food is medicine. This is such a book. Dr. Mincolla's book transcends a mere integration of Eastern and Western healing, by illuminating the importance of achieving harmony through unity of body, emotions, intellect, and spirit, all in balance with one another. And the best part of this process is that he does this easily, with brilliant understanding of how food, your specific body type, and your "Chi" must all flow together in balance. This is true health. This book if truly a healing tool. A must-read!

Great Help
After searching for help all these years I finally found some help with my nutrition problems. Thank You Mark Mincolla
