Interesting and informative, but...(my but about it)
The book was quite clear and informative. It had many experiences that were shared and communicated well. It did give me many interesting tid bits and pointers, but -

I started to get the feeling that the author was really full of himself, and it seemed after a while that he kept saying: "only after I stepped in did things improve most of the time because I am such a smart guy..."

That started to wear me down and it started to get a little annoying. If it wasnt for that, the book was good.

I would not recommend this book to any friend of mine because I think there are other books out there that tell the reader more with less personal glory attached to it.

Perhaps I should read biographies more?

A Refreshing Perspective
I started reading business books with Mark McCormack's "What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School" years ago. So, I couldn't resist "Never Wrestle with a Pig," and am glad I picked it up. McCormack reminds us of the fundamentals and basic goals of business in order to succeed and prosper - whether today, tomorrow or way back in the 20th Century. I'm done wrestling with pigs, but I am going to give humans in business more chances with my refreshed knowledge from McCormack. It's a quick read with long-lasting benefits.

It caught my attention
I usually tend to find career development/strategy books simplistic and mind-numbing. After having my attention caught by the title of this book though, I decided to give it a try. I couldn't put it down and have already recommended it to many people. The format is very reader-friendly with McCormack's having done a great job of packaging his points in morsels that are easy to absorb. You'll probably find yourself nodding in agreement with his bits of common sense as you're reading. It's the kind of book that you want to share with everyone, but on the other hand keep it to yourself because what you learn from this book will make you appear like a genius. The only detraction from the material is that the author does come off as pompous at times, but looking at his accomplishments, I think this attitude is warranted.

A good review of the MGB, but from a European perspective.
This is at base a good book, and certainly important for MGB owners. However, the book is written from a distinctly European perspective. With the vast majority of MGBs having been sold into the North American market, the European slant is rather a negative. The author is almost distainful of the aforementioned reality. My message to him would be: "Deal with it!"Also, as was true with his tome on the MGA, Clausager has the tendency to focus on the unusual at the expense of the cars owned by the vast majority of owners. My view is the time to include information of only passing utility is after all critical information has been included. The author would do better if he could focus on his readers' interests more, and on his own less. All of the basics should be included before mention of the fancy stuff begins. If you are not an American, but are an MGB fan, buy the book straightaway. If you are an American, you probably still will want it - but you have been warned.

Excellent, but very Eurocentric:
This is an excellent book, and I recommend it to everyone who owns and/or loves MGBs.

I agree with "Pennsylvania" though, that Clausager's perspective is very rooted in England and Europe. I feel there needs to be a full section for the differences in every major market, with North America, especially the US, being the largest. In fact, on page 126 Clausager says: "North American cars have not been split into US Federal, US Californian, and Canadian cars -- there is a limit to what even I will do!" (notice Mexico isn't mentioned), but on page 127 he states: "There is little doubt, however, that apart from the USA and the UK, some of the biggest markets were Australia, Canada, and Germany..." With the US and Canada being two of the biggest markets, more North American centricity is appropriate.

I do understand the enthusiest's disdain for the US market though; it 'mandated' all British cars into floaty, bloated, tall, weak mushballs, which is why Mark I cars are so valued.

Also, I have only found one discrepency, and that's one example of the piping of interior trim for Mark I cars. The second-from-top-left picture on page 40 shows a white 'B which has red interior with white piping (but Clausager does not note it as incorrect, which he does often about other details throughout the book). But, the Colour Schemes chart on page 131 shows Old English White or Snowberry White to have an optional red interior with black piping, which does not match with the picture on page 40 (should say white piping, or the picture should be noted as incorrect). Is this nit-picky? Yes, but that's what this book is all about.

Buy it, enjoy it, and write the publisher to make a future edition with more US information.

Message to previous poster --deal with it!
Well it seems that some of us don't like the way Mr. Clausager, who, in BMHIT circles is regarded as an authority, writes. My advice would be to get over it. Mr. Clausager has spent countless hours researching and writing about some of the world's most loved automobiles. The compromises that these automakers had to make just to satisfy the U.S.' federal regulations could be seen to bastardise the "original" designs of these cars. Unfortunately, the previous poster can't get over that fact.
This book is the rosetta stone to those who seek to find out what an "original MGB..." is after discovering that all of the unknowing previous owners chose to augment their cars with their ideas of improvements. Maybe you just want inspiration for your restoration from the excellent photography. Or, to those seeking a concours restoration, this is a valuable resource. Yes, I'm mad because there is only --one-- "Original MGB..."

Very Good but not the best
This book has a very good discussion of Photographic Composition covering all the basics needed for those desiring to improve. The pictures are excellent and illustrate the principles well. However, some of the discussion lacks the depth that I would like.

The best book I've found is "Image:Designing Effective Pictures" by Michael Freeman. This has a thorough discussion of all the techniques with excellent illustrations and diagrams. Unfortunately, it is no longer in print. I was able to get a used hardcover copy in very good condition for [$]. It's a must read for those desiring a firm grasp of the basics. Worth treasuring.

Strong on Design Hints & Tech Data, But Some Photos Weak
As an intermediate amateur photographer, I compared this book with "Learning to See Creatively" by Bryan Peterson and "Photography and the Art of Seeing" by Freeman Patterson. I found chapter 2 on graphic controls (e.g., lines, shapes, patterns) quite valuable and not covered in much detail in the other two books. For example, the discussion of "lines and their meanings" on p.31 is thought-provoking. The technical data (e.g., camera, lens, exposure, film, and darkroom techniques) on pp.137-141 were also useful. I agree with the July 30, 2000 review that the text is "meaningful" but disagree that it is "limited"; I thought there was exactly the right amount of text. Unfortunately, some of Grill's photos were unremarkable (e.g., pp.48 & 87) or borderline ugly (e.g., p.92). Hey, buy all three books at Amazon.com!

Well organized, and professional
This is a very well organized and concise book on photocomposition. It has a very thoughtful progression of the covered subjects, taking the reader from basic concepts of graphic design to the practical presentational and psychological principals. From the 5 main chapters of the book I found chapters 2 "Graphic Controls" and chapter 5 "Total Control" the best chapters from the point of view of richness of presentation and its practical value. The other chapters seemed to me shallower and less focused. I share the dissatisfaction of other reviewers with the presented photographs. Even though I understand that those photographs are carefully selected not for their extreme photographic value, but rather for their association with the subject of the topic they are presented for, I assume that the authors could had done a better job of finding or making more appealing pictures. Without a rich set of photographs this books seems to be a bit more "theoretical" then a book on photography, I believe, should be.

On the other note, I noted that despite the very careful selection and sequence of presentation of the main subjects, most of them are not covered as deeply as they deserve to. This being a disadvantage on one hand could easily be considered as an advantage, because the book does not overwhelm the reader with details, leaving enough space for creativity.

Overall I consider the book to be very useful and educational, especially for high end amature and beginner professional photographers.

Despite some criticism presented, I still rate it with 5 stars, which I think the book fully deserves.

Bring back the "Exit Authority"
Compared to "The Exit Authority" (More expensive, but worth the price) this book is garbage.

The paper is newsprint, so it tears easily, and doesn't hold up well in the cab of my semi. The layout is on a state-by-state basis, not continuously by freeway, so you have to change pages when you change states, not when you change freeways. For interstate driving, this is very annoying.

As a professional truck driver, I do not buy this book, and I do not recommend it to anyone else.

Fabulous resource for Interstate travelers
I purchsed this book to have along for a 6,000 mile family drive across the US and back, and found it incredibly useful. I had planned to buy software for my laptop or PDA but when I found the same comprehensive info in a cheaper, easier-to-use book form, I bought it instead.

I certainly wasn't disappointed. Although the notational scheme is a bit cryptic, once you get the hang of reading the exit-by-exit entries it's easy to scan ahead and spot places to eat or gas up, or just find a rest area for a quick break. The listings are well organized and very thorough -- I'm sure I can use this book far easier than I could access a software version, especially in a fully-packed moving car.

This book helped us avoid running out of gas in Arizona, and many times let us find just the right exit to stop and feed the kids (who love Sonic drive-ins). Don't take a long trip on US Interstate highways without this book!

Next Exit : USA Interstate Highway Exit Directory
Traveled from Seattle to L.A., Mapquest internet map would have taken us 14 miles off course to get to our halfway point hotel in Williams,Ca. We would have take the wrong exit, and traveled in the wrong direction after that. We used Next Exit instead and were taken right to the door of the hotel. Which incidently was within sight at the very next exit after the one Mapquest instructed us to use. Next Exit saved us many hours of aggrevation and the resulting family arguments which would have ensued. This book is worth far more than the tiny price we paid. Please, Please, buy this book !!!!!

yes, but no
Everything you've ever wanted to know about Baum's Oz career, written, alas, by a perfectly dreadful stylist who can't synthesize information, can't shape a thought, and, basically, can't write.

The photos are nifty, though.

Impressively Researched and Finely Focused
Oz Before the Rainbow (L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on Stage and Screen to 1939) is an amazingly well researched and thorough piece of work by archivist Mark Evan Swartz. This piercing view is directed at the 1902-3 stage version and the three subsequent incorporations of the story into the silent movies, often rather loosely incorporated in odd and often surprising ways for those familiar only with the book. All of these versions of Baum's first book have fallen out of public consciousness, pushed aside, as it were, by the memorable 1939 film verion (the version that remained the truest to the spirit and not just some of the ideas of the book). Concepts from the previous incarnations do leak into the 1939 movie and it is fascinating to watch this evolution. This is a tremondous piece of research that is a must for fans of Oz.

What a Surprise!
Prior to reading this wonderful book, I was somewhat of a newbie to the works of L. Frank Baum. I was familiar with the Wizard of Oz movie, but had never bothered to read the book from whence it came. Reading Mark Evan Swartz's "Oz Before the Rainbow" opened my eyes to Baum's additional works as well as the 1903 stage extravaganza based on "The Wizard of Oz".

Before the 1939 Judy Garland film, the 1903 stage adaptation was THE definitive version of Baum's first book. David Montgomery and Fred Stone were the definitive Tin Man and Scarecrow. In fact, the play made the team of Montgomery and Stone household names for several years after the play's successful run. While the storyline of the musical did differ from Baum's original work, you'll be surprised to find out how much of it translated over to the '39 movie.

Several adjustments were made to the story in order to get it to the stage, rendering the story vaguely recognizible, but way off from Baum's originial work. While wary of the many differences, Baum and songwriting partner Paul Tietjens composed several tunes for the show -- none of which carried over to the film versions. But through extensive research, Swartz provides the words to many of these forgotton melodies -- a real find for any Oz fan.

There are also many other interesting revelations concerning the 1903 play as well as the other film versions that followed. For instance, did you know Oliver Hardy (of Laurel & Hardy fame) played a part in one of the early versions of Oz?

This is a great book for any fan of the Oz books or movies. It's all beautifully arranged between text, documents and pictures. It'll make a wonderful addition to your Oz colletion and make you want to discover more about Oz prior to 1939. Highly recommended reading!

Missed it by that much
I liked this book overall, and it was interesting to see the changes and deletions between te script and the finished film. The big problem I had was the omission of the ending scene in the screenplay, it just seems like a cop out to protect a secret that was already out at the time of the book's release A WEEK AFTER THE MOVIE CAME OUT. I wanted this book in hardback but for somereason it never came available, and I ended up settling for the paperback version. I have a feeling the Cinefex magazine covering Planet of the Apes will be much more informative for a lot less money.

decent book, but ENDING IS MISSING
The copy of this book I have does NOT have the surprise ending that is in the film. I won't spoil the ending, but neither will this screenplay....

A beautifull Collector's piece.
This is a beautifull book about the 2001 version of Planet of the Apes directed by Tim Burton.

It is varied, with lots articles on many aspects of the film and richly illustrated througout with incredible film and "behind the camera" images. Additionally you will find the complete screenplay with related photos. All those elements combined make it an excpetional piece of film memorabilia.

Overall, this book does a great service to a movie that continues the great myth of "Planet of the Apes".

If you prefer your Odinism served with an a exotic side dish of occultism and secret society mystagoguery-here it is!

But be forewarned, Prof. Mirabello is not nearly as entertaining as Carlos Castaneda.

Bon Apetite!

Good or Bad?
Okay so the book has some nice information about northern european heathenism, However the idea of an ancient secret society is an utter load. All the so called "facts" about this group that the book presents are just conspiracy theory nonsense. I would say buy the book if you already own other more important books on Asatru and Northern European Heathenism. Its a sad shame that in a religion with as much tradition as Asatru that people still think they need some historical validation in the way the wiccans do.

Where's the fun?
Ah, spiritual warfare books. Some read them and believe. I read them to laugh at the stories of how D&D turns teens into murderous zombies or how you need to burn every item in your house that ever came from the entire continent of Africa.

From the recreational Christian perspective, this book is sorely lacking. It spends more time pounding the same old 'armor of God' Bible verses in your eyes than getting into the juicy stuff. If you really believe in spiritual warfare, this may actually be a good book. If you're looking for entertainment value, skip it.

THE POWER OF GOD'S TRUTH TO FREE US
This was a life changing book for me. Far from being a sensationalistic book about demons etc, the focus is on Jesus Christ and God's truth as revealed in the Bible. While reading it, I understood for the first time that I needn't be subject to the emotional-spiritual-psychological baggage of my past. God's Truth is "true" and His character doesn't change. He is reliable in spite of the emotional "reality" to which we are subject at a particular time in life. Through knowing that truth, we gain a perspective of life and reality which puts all else into true perspective. He addresses satan as a real adversary, yet makes it clear that he, too, is subject to God's truth. I thank God for Bubeck and the work he composed. Highly recommended.

This should be a fundamental resource in any Christian's library. The fact that people who glorify witchcraft and satanism give it one star on Amazon should be a clue. Satan is concerned about this book because it is clear, simple, and exciting. It's a classic. It is perfect for building a solid foundation in a society that rejects the beauty and love of Christ. And it's cautionary, exposing the results of following a very real Satan.

Acrobat for people who can't find the online documentation.
The windows/mac duplications is a waste of space. A number of errors of fact. Useless discussion of graphics compression formats. If there was something useful here that isn't in Acrobat's online documentation, I missed it. I'm still looking for a useful advanced book on Acrobat.

Best Reference book available for Acrobat 3.X
I strongly diagree with the Toronto reviewer regarding the compression discussion in this book. If you are deliverying PDF via the web you need your PDF files as small as possible without sacrificing graphics quality.

I still use this book for reference although I have upgraded to Acrobat 4.05. Outstanding explanations of all settings for Distiller and important information on print drivers and PostScript printer definitions (PPDs). I hope the author updates his book for the latest Acrobat 4.05 version.

A great book if it was 160 pages shorter
dissappointed to find that 160 pages of the 420 are essentially duplicates. The only difference being windows or Mac screen dumps. The index is very short and does not detail many of the topics covered. Such a good idea for a book with a captivating name but not quite as much a 'Bible' as I would have hoped for.
