A delight!
I just bought this book for a friend's child, but I fell in love with it first. It is a delightful story, with absolutely wonderful illustrations. I think I'll have to get a copy for myself now!

A great new musical tale!
This is a wonderful story with beautiful illustrations. A great book for children!

Share this with your children -- you will enjoy it too
This is one of my five year old son's favorite books. We read every night before going to bed. So, we read lots of books. This one always stays at the top of the stack. The illustrations are magical and make the story come alive.

"My Life With the Wave" is extraordinarily imaginative
I love books that begin with a fanciful, "what-if" premise. In this case, what if a sliver of the sea -- a wave -- followed a family home from the beach like a stray animal? The illustrations, humorous in a borderline-grotesque way, capture the muscular spirit of this fantasy. I need not convince my children to read this story again and again, and they need not waste time coaxing me. I love it because it permits every reader to imagine the delightfully surreal.

What happens when a boy bring home a wave from the ocean?
Kids are always bringing things home from the beach, but you have probably never seen a kid who brings home a stray wave. "My Life with the Wave" is based on the story by Octavio Paz, the Nobel Prize winning author from Mexico. At first the boy finds it is great fun to have a wave in the house; the sun comes to play with it and there are fish adorning the wave's hair. But waves are affected by the moon and the sun, and the boy discovers that the wave can get very moody at times. How do you get a wave to go back to the sea? This charming and imaginative tale has been translated and adapted for children by Catherine Cowan and illustrated by Mark Buehner, who has skillfully hidden a cat, a dog, a mouse, a whale and a sea horse in almost every picture (just to drive us even more crazy, I imagine). The best thing about this book is that no matter how much you kids are inspired, they will never, ever be able to bring home anything like a wave. At least, I certainly hope not.

A Truly Wonderful Children's Book
My Life With The Wave is, by far, my favorite children's book and just fascinates my 6-year-old daughter. The story, the writing, the illustrations are all wonderful. We've taken this book out of our local library many times. Now, we are buying our own copy, one for my daughter's teacher and one for a friend.

My TA is a good writer.
Mark Rackers is an excellent writer. His piece completely engrosses as it takes you on a journey through relationships, adulthood, and parenthood. I read it so late into the night that I couldn't wake up for Mark's class in the morning. That's how great this book is. Everyone can relate to at least some part of this novel. It is both easy to read and very fulfilling. Pay the 15 bucks, and help this guy out.

A really great book!
This is one of my favorite books, I couldn't put it down.
I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys truly excellent literary works. I can't wait to see what Mark comes up with next.

WOW.
This book is one the most gripping commentaries on life as a 20 Something that I have ever read. Mark is irreverant, funny, and heartbreakingly honest. One heck of a book from one heck of a writer.

Human Behavior Exploration
The Neurophysics of Human Behavior is a must read and resource text for anyone in the profession of personal change artistry. Vital work which was done years previous and had stagnated have been given new life by a whole new approach to the working of the human brain. Read it once and you will have to read it again. It is a text book, treated as such, it provides many an hour of thought provoking ideas and new insights. I gave it a 5 star rating, because there was not a ten star rating. It is a wonderful text that I look forward to using throughout my practice and in working with people. A job well done and I look forward to the follow-up text.

Destined To Become A Classic
Too many books about human behavior and thought simply aren't worth the time it takes to read them. Most are like celery at dinner, an apetizer with more fiber than taste or nutrition. In contrast, this book is like dining at Maxim's of Paris every Saturday night for a year and only having sumptuous dishes galore. If you are interested to know what memetics, evolution, entropy, chaos theory, biology, neuroscience, psychology, information theory, brain function, thought field theory, state theory, cybernetics, and persuasion have in commmon -- without any psychobabble -- then buy a copy. This book offers the reader a deep, thoughtful, well-documented exploration of numerous subjects as they relate to human behavior. It is a challenging read. You won't be able to read it in one sitting, nor will only one reading be enough to probe the surprising depth of the material. You will however be rewarded with a provocative tour of the fundamenttals of thought and human behavior. I know of no other book that succeeds in tying so many disparate fields of inquiry together. It even provides a way of mapping the nuerocognitive system called NeuroPrint that will help you determine effective interventions with others. Beware: the ramifications of the material are profound and will reverberate through your current beliefs. On a side note, I wish the book were shorter and less expensive. But I am at a loss as to what could be cut that would not damage ther overall presentation. I am grateful the book is so well bound -- my copy is now filled with yellow highlighter and marginal notes, and is and will be referred to regularly. Those issues aside, I strongly recommend that every professor, parent, spouse, therapist, salesman, or individual who interacts with others buy and read a copy as soon as you can. In the future no one will be able to consider themselves knowledgeable in the field of human thought and behavior that has not read and carefully considered the material in this book. It should become a classic.

The Neurophysics of Human Behavior.
This is un unavoidable text for every practitioner of energy psychologies, NLP, psychotherapy in general and excellence performance modelers. Its 355 pages are not ligth reading, becuse every paragraph is packed with information, scientific terminology and rigorous logical reasoning. Our team of physicians and RN's have studied (not readed)"Neurophysics" several times, because it speaks our own language. No occult energies or spiritual jargon here, just plain reasoning based in hard facts of natural sciences. Its three sections and nineteen chapters aim at establishing scientific basis to justify the use of a given intervention tool. In my opinion, this is the only way by which established science can start to consider accepting energy psychologies as legitimate intervention tools. Chapter 1 provides a rational discussion of NLP. This discussion continues in other chapters, looking for the scientific basis of modeling, eye movements, metaphors, submodalities and anchoring. This is the most lucid discussion of neurolinguistic interventions that we have found in all NLP bibliography. The rest of Section II establishes the basis and makes a detailed description of the Theory of Pattern-Entropy Interaction. Section II is the most important part of the book, because guides the reader, step by step, in the design and operation of Neuroprint, a very useful clinical tool that graphically models neurocognitive patterns of information and leads the clinician to use the most appropriate tool for the patient. The authors don't limit their writing to theraputic applications but use 5 chapters to describe Human Performance Modeling and Engineering. A glossary of scientific terminology and more than 500 references (textbooks and scientific references)completes the book Furman, a neuroscientist and NLP Practitioner is the author of 18 scientific papers, and Gallo, a Ph.D. psychologist, founder of EDxTM is the author of several seminal books on energy psychology.

We look ahead to future books by these authors.

Gospel messages
The New Interpreter's Bible is a twelve-volume series, updating the popular Interpreter's Bible from a few decades ago. There are several key features common to all of the volumes of this series. First, each includes a two-column, double translation of the Biblical text (NIV - New International Version, and NRSV - New Revised Standard Version) arranged by topical unit or story. Then, they provide commentaries that look at the passages as a whole, as well as verse-by-verse. Third, interesting Reflection pieces that relate the passages to each other, to history, and to current concerns occur at the conclusion of each passage. Fourth, introductory articles for each book are provided that discuss transmission, historical background, cultural setting, literary concerns, and current scholarship. Finally, there are general articles about the Bible, each Testament, and various types of literature (Narrative, Gospel, Wisdom Literature, etc.) are provided to give general placement and knowledge about the text overall.

The list of contributors, editors, and consultants on the project is a veritable Who's Who of biblical and theological scholarship, representing all major traditions and schools of thought liberal and conservative. Leander Keck, of the Yale Divinity School, is the primary editor of the series.

The volumes were published individually, and can be purchased individually, which is a good thing, given that they are a bit expensive. But for any serious biblical scholar, preacher, student, or enthusiast, they are invaluable.

--Volume VIII--

The eighth volume of the New Interpreter's Bible is the volume that introduces the New Testament, and the Gospels in particular. After an series of introductory essays concerning New Testament literature and background, the volume continues with the books of Matthew and Mark.

Introductory essays look at the topics of Ancient Texts and different versions of the New Testament, the Greco-Roman cultural setting of the New Testament, the Jewish and Ecclesiastical (Church) settings of the New Testament. It follows up with two essays discussing issues of the gospels - a look at narrative literature, and a look a the image(s) of Jesus presented in the gospels.

Just what type of literature is contained in the Gospels is a subject worthy of study. Preachers explore different aspects of the Gospels because they are open to lending inspiration. But they refuse to be boxed in. Gospels are more than simple histories or biographies. 'The genre of the Gospels continues to be a subject of debate. Adela Yarbro Collins, for instance, denies that Mark is a biography. Although it may be concerned with the identity of Jesus and present him as a model, these are not its main purposes. Basically, it records events that changed the world - eschatological events. Thus she classifies it as apocalyptic history.'

M. Eugene Boring of the Brite Divinity School provides the commentary on the gospel of Matthew. The introductory article looks at history, structure, literary criticism, sources, background of textual transmission, and theological emphases. There are interesting charts and graphics as well as outlines showing intricate chiastic structures and triadic patterns.

Pheme Perkins of Boston College addresses the gospel of Mark. Many scholars see Mark as the earliest written gospel, and one that provides a basic framework for Matthew and Luke. Her essay looks at historical background and audience, authorship and composition date, and literary genre issues.

High praise goes to the general editorial staff for working with such strong authors/scholars, that their work fits together well as part of this set while retaining their individual characteristics (much like the writers of the Bible itself!).

Genesis explained with incredible commentary.
I have been a student of the bible most of my life, and have compared numerous commentaries and translations over and over, without finding very satisfactory explainations for most of the passages. I just acquired the complete set of The New Interpreter's Bible, and have read some of the general articles and the Genesis commentary from Vol. 1. I am extremely picky- but absolutely love the commentary, and find it right on the mark with my independent thoughts (I had lost hope that anyone would ever see it the way I do; most commentaries seemed to me not to ring of the truths in the passages). In addition, many more things are brought to light that I had never thought of in detail before, as well as things I had overlooked. I have renewed faith in the Bible due to this very enlightening commentary. The author is exceptionally good- my only complaint is that there are a few too many 'seminary' terms the general public is not familiar with.

The Best of the Best
Most people understand that the study of Scripture is an enormous task; and that there is a considerable theological heritage to even the most benign of passages. Unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult to translate that understanding into a willingness to genuinely delve into the vast pool of material out there. In addition, it's hard to know who to trust.

You can trust the New Interpreter's Bible series. All of the scholars who contributed are the best in their field. In addition, the layout (which includes two complete translations - the NIV and the NRSV) is conducive to both scholarly and spiritual study of the texts.

Each text is broken down into discret units (i.e. the Tower of Babel) followed by general commentary on the passage, verse by vers analysis of key issues, and then an overview of study questions. The commentators address issues of authorship, historical setting, translation, theological history, and personal application. In addition, they graciously point to excellent sources for further reading.

Speaking as a pastor, it is my strong opinion that every English-speaking Christian who is serious about Bible study should own the complete set.

MARVELOUS, MARVELOUS, MARVELOUS
This book truly captures the essence of New York at Christmas. Mr. Crosby has done a remarkable job of capturing the known and the unknown, both of which make Manhattan a spectacular place to be.

The presentation is wonderful, the content is great, and the author/photographer is to be thanked for sharing his art with us.

I look forward to future books by Mr. Crosby.

Makes me want to be in Manhattan.
Being in New York at Christmas is one of my favorite things...and now I can relive that time whenever I pick up this book. The selection of subjects for the photographs is fascinating, the quality of the photography is excellent and the comments throughout the book are illuminating. I recommend New York Christmas as an ideal book for your library or as a gift.

Stunning Collection of Photos
This is an amazing piece of work which deftly displays a wintry charm that I never knew New York City possessed. It's funny that only by looking at familiar places through someone else's eyes can we really see what's there. Whether you're a New Yorker, a transplanted New Yorker, or just an occasional visitor, this wonderful collection of Christmastime photos surely deserves a prominent place on your coffee table. Hats off to Mr. Crosby for a job quite well done.

If you Can't Take Mark Harvey Camping, Take His Book
As a carefree college student,I camped quite often, but today, as a thirty year old business owner, I prefer to enjoy the outdoors by day, and to sleep in my warm, safe, familiar home by night. Harvey's Wilderness Guide has not only helped me to more thoroughly enjoy my day hikes, but it has also served as a catalyst to reignite my enthusiasm in camping for more than a Sunday afternoon. Harvey delivers intelligent, informative information in an easy to understand and enthusiastic style. The Wilderness Guide is packed with information, but it is far from bland reading, for Harvey is not only intelligent and well written, but he has a sense of humor as well. I live in Aspen and have spent time with Mark Harvey on numerous occasions. Possibly I will be able to camp with him one day. If not, I always have The National Outdoor Leadership School's Wilderness Guide.

Excellent!!
A very good coverage of a large variety of topics. Learned a lot.

The best book for serious outdoor adventure
I read the book in preparation for a mountaineering course - it's great - informative, well written, a good balance of solid content and easy readability. He would be a great person to go up a mountain with - but the book is a little easier to fit in the backpack!

An absolute must for anyone who camps in the non-RV sense of the word.

Great Neuroscience Book
I just finished using this book for an undergraduate course in neuroscience. It was one of the best biology books I have ever obtained. I have since read the sections the course did not have the time to cover and enjoyed them all. The figures are excellent and greatly aid in your learning. The authors are even somewhat comical at some points. In all, I would highly recommend this book for the introductory neuroscientist!

Great overview of neuroscience!
This book is a great introduction to neuroscience, and a good review of the field for those who need to brush up on basic knowledge. I majored in neuroscience at Brown University, and am now a graduate student in the field, and I still occasionally use this book as a quick reference. The figures are one of the best features of this book.

Excellent for Fundamental Knowledge of Neuroscience
This book was key for me in undergraduate neurobiology work, and even as a great supplement for graduate studies. It breaks down the neurological system in a clear, concise, and simple method, using excellent diagrams, illustrations. It actually simplifies neuroscience and I found it easier to understand than some of my more in-depth graduate books.

A Quantity of Strategies and Patterns
Shows you how to create object models (analysis models) through indepth examples and guidance by presenting strategies and patterns as you need them as you work through the examples. The strategies tell you how to approach a task such as how to select objects. Strategies are short, focused. For example, a strategy may have three or four one-sentence things to do to accomplish a goal. The patterns present template objects and their typical interactions.

The examples are relevant to business analysts.

After working through even just one example, you will be able to create object models and using the strategies and patterns.

Includes reference section containing all of the strategies and patterns.

The book uses COAD notation to present the examples, so for people familiar with UML it takes a little getting used to.

The strategies and patterns mentioned in the book are really helpful. They improve the object think. The examples explain the author's point of view clearly. This book complements other books in OOAD and patterns by Craig Larmen, GoF, Martin Fowler etc.

One interesting point is that the author shows how same strategy or pattern helps in design in various problems. Most of the books do not show this. For beginners, it is often difficult to grasp a strategy or pattern with just one example.

One drawback is it uses UML notation very less. But Coad notation is simple and we can easily grasp to understand the diagrams in the book. If you want to learn from solid examples, this is a good choice. If you are very new to OOAD, this is NOT the one you can start with.

This book makes a significant contribution ...
"This book makes a significant contribution to the world of business computing by providing familiar business application examples. The strategies and patterns make it easy to extend the practitioner's current knowledge and mental models. Working professionals in business who want to learn how to 'object think' will find concrete examples of applications development, along with practical 'how to' guidance. The result? Accelerated learning!" -- Peter Fingar, Dir. of Information Technology, U of Tampa,
