great!
i've taken a few pictures before ive gotten this book. but i loved the way it broke down everything and basically taught u from scratch. everything u need to know about underwater photography. when i got this book it was my bible for about a year i read it in and out multiple times and still use it today as a reference. i think the best part about this book is the pictures. and the fact that he tells u different techniques and shows how it ends up on the exposure. and how every single picture in the book (hundreds) was obtained, from shutter speed to strobe setting was also very helpful. lots of time underwater and film was used to make this book. i suggest this book to anyone who is even thinking of taking a camera below the surface. or someone who already has. because of this my photoalbum is stunning and better than i ever thought it could be.

All-in-one for beginning as well as advanced photographers.
As an amateur surface photographer, I truly enjoyed reading this book. It provides me comprehensive basic knowledge on the subject as well as more in-depth knowledge to build on down the road. The photos throughout the book greatly help convey the author's ideas and the readers to quickly grasp the concept. I recommend this book to anyone considering taking up underwater photography. Note: Since the book was written by a British author, at the beginning I was bit confused with the measuring system (meters instead of feet) and the currency (pounds instead of US dollars). To know the conversion rate at the start would be very helpful.

Beautifully illustrated book
With over 250 photographs and illustrations, each with a fully detailled description on strobe and apperture settings. If you own a housed camera, this book is a must.

Dense, incisive exciting first novel...
I can't say enough how much this book impressed me. It is the one of the most accurate and chilling insights into the mind of an adolescent that has been written in the last 15 years. Asher himself bears comparison with the icy protagonist of Amis' Rachel Papers, but where the Rachel Papers stops at being an entertaining insight into callow youth, Mark Fyfe's debut is underpinned with a distubingly thourough debunking of the falacies of modern sociology and culture. A deeply significant concept, superbly made flesh and elegantly handled.

Intellects need apply!!!
Fyfe casts a spellbinding tale...nothing of the sort has ever been written so well. Where he came from is unimportant when you realize where he is going. Expect more from this hidden gem.

Mark Fyfe has a knack for telling it like it is.

quintessential philosophical novel about amorality & taboo.
This book says more in 200 pages than Brett Ellis, Blake Morrrison and Iain Banks have said in all their related literature. For myself, this text is one of the better intellectual statements on sociopathy since Dostoyevsky's "Crime & Punishment" with Mr Fyfe's - whoever he is ?- brilliantly condensed description of unconscious fantasy. I reccomend it to other health professionals in adolescent psychiatry.Incidentally, does anyone know Mark Fyfe's e-mail for correspondence?

An excellent book full of original, well-presented ideas.
Contents summary: Introduction (4pp). The Moon: reparenting the inner child (16pp). Moon signs delineated (33pp). Moon phases and eclipses (18pp). Moon's Nodes (45pp, including interpretations of the six possible sign pairs on their axis). Transits of the outer planets - discussion without very specific interpretations (49pp). Neptune - discussion, with images for its house placement by transit or natally (35pp). Pluto - discussion (28pp). Depth astrology (36pp). Misuses of astrology (12pp). Tables of eclipses (1980-1995) and lunations (1960-1998) (4pp).

This is an intelligent, wise and therapeutically-oriented book. It is one to read and absorb from beginning to end, and to refer back to repeatedly. It may not be the most focused book in its organisation, and treats some fairly diverse topics, but there are plenty of little gems of wisdom to be found, and the writing is serene and free from filler. Very worthwhile for its Moon sign and Moon's nodes material alone, but goes far beyond this with its other essays to enhance general astrological consciousness.

a must read
I came across this page when searching for some other astrology books and felt I should write a review.

It's been nearly fifteen years since I bought this book and it remains on my bookshelf, well-read and dog-eared from use over the years. It is wonderfully insightful, with practical and wise advice about handling planetary energies. I thoroughly recommend it, as well as Tracy's other books (particularly 'How to handle your T-square' - if you can get a hold of it).

Astrology as a Path into Internal Depth/Self-Discovery
This book is a must-read and a must-have, both for practicing Astrologers and for any student of Astrology. Any reread will always catalyze fresh insights for the reader as Tracy Marks has succeeded in creating a dynamic and definitive work covering such topics as principles of depth astrology, the nodes of the moon, astrology and life purpose, dealing creatively with transits, the healing power of things lunar and unlocking one's potentials. In my opinion, The Astrology of Self-Discovery also contains one of the definitive pieces of writing on the planet Neptune, the subtitle of the chapter being aptly named "How to swim through cosmic waters" Ms. Marks explores Neptunian states of consciousness by helping the reader to work with the elusiveness of Neptunian experiences and possible resulting "fog" in very concrete and extremely useful ways. The Neptune worksheets are particularly helpful. In addition, her work on the nodes of the moon and their respective issues and lessons is outstanding; in fact, let me state again that I find this book to be one of the classics of Astrology. I urge you to have this book in your library!

The World's Best-Loved Dinosaur Helps Kids Cope With School
The aging process takes us through countless milestones--not all of which are pleasant. Many of us have to think back 20, 30, 40, or more years to recall one of our most disturbing ones. At this stage a number of us felt trapped and helpless. Some became victims of insomnia or stomach disorders, and probably far more than are willing to admit it now considered packing our bags and making a late night get-away. Yet, somehow, we all survived our first day of school. For many little children, going to school is the first major trauma life offers. Seeing how enjoyable this seemingly terrifying ordeal is for Baby Bop should alleviate their unhappy confusion. This book describes the juvenile dinosaur's visit to a preschool where she partkes in one fun activity after another. Whether finger-painting, building a sandcastle, playing with blocks, or feeding the guinea pig, the story shows school as a non-threatening place to be. Through a series of bright color photographs, not illustrations, the tale presents schoolmates as friendly and the teacher as kind and supportive. As further reinforcement, Barney is shown bringing Baby-Bop in the morning and picking her up in the afternoon. This cute narrative will make children feel secure at a very unnerving time in their young lives. Unfortunately, it came along three decades too late for me.

Over and over and over and over
I do believe I have read this book at least a million times. I have two children, ages 5 and 3, and they love the story. The pictures are beautiful and the content is relevant to this scary time in a child's life....school!

Perfect for kids that are a little scared of starting school
My son loves this book. It helped him learn about starting school and things that can occur during the school day. It also helped him getting over the fear of starting a school that he was unsure of. This is reading book that kids and parents can enjoy together.

This book brings together Past and Present Baseball History
This was a great way to commemorate the end of a fantastic Baseball season. It contains some great stories of Bobby Thompson, Babe Ruth and Roger Maris as well as the stories behind McGwire's 63, 67,68 and 70 homerun balls and Sosa's 61, 64 and 66 homerun balls.

The catalog also makes a great coffee table book.

It brings together past and present Baseball history
This may be your only chance to see present baseball history. There are great photographs of McGwire's home run balls 63, 67, 68 and 70 as well as Sosa's 61, 64 and 66. Along with the photographs there are the stories behind each one.

This is a great way to commemorate the fantastic 1998 Baseball season. It also makes a great coffee table book.

Tops them all!
I have been collecting Guernsey's catalogues for years and this one tops them all! Informativive, factual, and quite imaginitive, too. Guaranteed to become a collector's item!

Great Story!
This book tells a great, fun story! I'm not even in the position to join the military but I started to read this book and found a great story. I highly recommend this book to anyone, not just people who want to join the military. If you know anyone who has gone through this training, this is invaluable to understand what they have gone through.

Great Conditioning Outline
I'm a Physical Education teacher who is getting ready for Basic Training. As part of my students exercise routine we use the program in this book. Talk about a pump! The boys love it, and the girls love the ab work. On days when we can't get into the weight room we do the workout from this book. Nothing fancy just good push ups and sit up. What a workout, try it and you'll see.

Bulls Eye!!!
I found this book to be right on the money. I have spoken to Drill Sergeants during my pre basic training and they have been amazed at how much I already knew. This book covers it all. The workouts for the PT test are very good. I scored 235 on my first test and 270 on my most recent. All by following the workout tips. Read this book and learn before you go.

What?!?!?!? Only 3 reviews?!?!?!?!?
I received this book as a gift from my aunt just a couple days ago. It was late at night and I was cramming for an exam. I noticed the book's title and discovered that it was a book of unbelievable accomplishments, which I love. I decided to leaf through the book and read just a few anecdotes of these noteworthy accomplishments by both man and nature....

....and I couldn't put it down. It didn't take long for me to push all those history notes clear out of my head. I only intended on reading a few stories and I wound up reading hundreds! They are absolutely hilarious! Like the story of the "best pen":

One day a guy paid $400 for steel-banded tires that were said to be bomb-proof and spike-proof. But later he wound up puncturing them by running over a ball-point pen, and the pen still wrote afterwards!

Are you hungry for more of these stories? Then pick up this book! It's got stories on movies, literature, food, science, technology, nature, psychology--anything you want to know! Just don't buy it if you have a exam coming up. I haven't gotten mine back yet and I don't think I did very well on it.

You'll flip through it again and again . .
Felton and Fowler's hilarious volume citing the best, worst, and most unusual in movies, music, sports, art, literature, etc. (according to the authors, their own book is the worst ever). This book has long been a favorite of mine, and I was thrilled to find out that this book was still in print and highly recommend it to anyone who is intrigued by the unconventional.

Some of the articles include: "The Most Unusual Jazz Band" (the Hilton Sisters, Daisy and Violet, siamese twins joined at the hip); "Most Unusual Reformer" (an imposing woman named Carrie Nation who was active during the turn of the century; her mother thought she was Queen Victoria); and "Most Unusual Auction" (a certain body part belonging to Napoleon cited as a "dried up object", which was set to be auctioned for a staggering amount). One of the funniest and most absorbing reference works ever (once you get into it, it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to put down), well written and filled with illustrations which serve to verify some of the far-out stories. To anyone who enjoys the "Guinness Book of World Records" and the like, I heartily recommend it.

i Love this book
It is sooo good and sooo funny

Simple but deadly!
Wow! After playing various guitar styles for years and years, I decided to learn a little fingerstyle guitar and boy am I glad I picked up this book. While only 56 pages, the book includes a CD and some GREAT practice pieces to learn. Hanson lays out the material in a format that is simple enough for a beginner but also challenging enough for the intermediate to advanced player. Highly recommended.

Buy this book!
This is the fourth book I have purchased by Mark Hanson. I also have the Travis Fingerpicking, Solo Fingerpicking, and Christmas Noel. This book gets into basic information real fast and will have you playing some "REAL GOOD STUFF" fast. I was able to play the first song in about an hour. The book has many difficult appearing chord names--BUT--most of the chords are two fingered and can be moved up an down the neck to make for some really great accompaniment. You will be playing all over the guitar--and sounding like a pro real fast. The book gets into more complicated material towards the end--but this book is not as complicated as the earlier mentioned books--so I would recommend this one first.

Fingerpicker
This book is superb. Hmm. Wait: it's flawless. I had heard that Hanson was a great teacher. Now I see why.

I've been playing about four years, I have a certain amount of ability, and I was able to start picking things up from this book right away. I was playing the first song in an hour or so. It uses all kinds of complex-sounding chords (Amin6, Dmin6, etc.), but Hanson ingeniuously uses very simple-to-play chords. As in, most of them require only one or two fingers!

I recently recorded myself playing one of the book's first songs and posted it to a message board of guitarists. Several people commented that it sounded "really complicated." Little do they know how easy it is to play! (They wanted me to post tabs--I gave them a link to come here and buy the book.)

The book's songs start at the fairly easy level, but by the end of the book, the material is extremely challenging. (Some high-speed ragtime.) If you're brand-new to the guitar, you'll struggle even with the first songs--but they would be learnable even by a novice. It will be a mighty struggle for me to learn the later songs in the book.

If you have any level of fingerpicking experience at all, you will jump into this book like a fish into a river. You will find excellent material to build your chops.

The book contains very little in the way of theory, but those two-finger chords I was telling you about are a great way for an advancing guitarist like me to sit and think about chords and the notes that go into them, and how to build them all over the neck. So you don't really get any theory about this book, but with a little dedication on your part, you can use it as a sort of launching platform. That's what I'm doing.

... It has vaulted straight into the "top 5 most valuable books" category for me--and I've bought a lot of guitar books.

...

Makes it look simple
Makes it look pretty simple and straightforward.
I hyaven't done anything yet.
Although I have found a slip up in the book; They recommend using this one form of foam insulation for the basement wall but then neglect to tell you how you are supposed to run wires through it.

Clear and concise
Book has many clear pictures and covers all areas of remodelling a basement. Easy to follow with lots of help. This book is cheap and all you need.

Wonderful
If you are staring down a flight of wooden basement steps leading to the cells where you keep your crazy aunt, and if you are wistfully picturing a cheerful downstairs game room with lots of clean, well-lighted spaces where the kids can scalp each other, where Bud and Sis can take their dates to play Twister with lime Jello on those nights when Mom and Dad are out at the shooting range, meaning you're contemplating a full basement renovation, BUY THIS BOOK. It will save you thousands of dollars, hours of anguish, and it may save your sanity.

Even for hardened do-it-yourselfers, the task of renovating a basement is dirty, dark, and difficult. In this case, knowledge is not only power but illumination. This book takes you by the hand and shows you how to do each step.

This is a damn good book.

Biochemistry (Board Review Series)

BRS Biochemistry
Dr. Marks' biochemistry board review series is quite informative. It gives a good foundation for those who have never had a biochemistry class and provides great review for those who have. It is a great supplemental text that helps to clarify and test the student's knowledge of the information. The book often helped to provide a guideline by which studying could be approached for the course. However, students should understand that the book is not meant to substitute their syllabi or their texts.

great review
This is a concise review of biochem for the boards. Dr. Marks explains things and is able to put them in an outline form so you are not reading endless text. The questions at the end of each section are really helpful.

Some words about Dawn Marks
I just want to say that I knew Dawn Marks. I was part of the last class she taught at Temple University School of Medicine. She died on Spet 6, 2000. She was one of the best teachers I've ever had. She worked tirelessly for her students... Giving organized review sessions, impromptu reviews for any student with a biochemistry problem, and overall a way of making us understand. This is echoed by Temple's performance each year on the USMLE in biochem. She will be missed by not only her family, friends, and students, but by medical students across the country.
