The Ultimate Guitar Scale Bible

Very complete
A very complete scale reference book. In fact, The Guitar Workshop, the editors of this book, have a variety of interesting books for the guitarist... check it out!

Not only for guitarists
Don't be misled by the title - this book of scales has a wealth of information and inspiration to offer to any improvising singer or instrumentalist. I am a jazz singer, and this is one of my favorite (and most useful) books. Sometimes I want to practice something specific, sometimes I just open it at random - I am always rewarded. With a little basic music theory under your belt and this book as a travel guide, you will find your ears and your ideas and your music expanding in exciting ways. Highly highly recommended.

You won't need another scale book.
When I found this book, I was finally able to stop haunting music and book stores. I can't imagine needing a scale that is not in this book. It goes way beyond the modes and major/minor pentatonics that most of us use. From Lydian Dominant 13 Pentatonic to Sus4b9b5 Pentatonic, from Banshiki-Cho to Banshiki-Cho to Zokuso, you can't find a more varied listing. It gives you an explanation and enough shapes to practice for you to be able to use the scales in your playing.
There's some theory and practice ideas in the appendices, but that's just icing on the cake, as is the low price. Highly recommended.

Poor Spider-Man is guilty until he is proven innocent
"Ultimate Spider-Man" is more than a re-imagining of the Spider-Man saga from the very beginning. Informed by our knowledge of what happened in the first decades worth of issues of "The Amazing Spider-Man" writer Brian Michael Bendis has heightened the intensity by collpasing the time frame. Even though there is never really a self-contained story in the mix, things are moving very quickly and Bendis is constantly pouring on the problems for our favorite webhead and his teenage secret identity.

"Public Scrutiny" is the fifth trade paperback collection of "Ultimate Spider-Man" comics, this time around including issues #28-32. Previous collections have focused on story arcs involving particular super villains (last time around it was the new and evolved Green Goblin). But one of the strengths of "Public Scrutiny" is that Spider-Man never fights one super villain in the entire book (even though he certainly wants to). The other is that the main focus is on Peter Parker being Spider-Man, an issue that is addressed on multiple levels, from Peter being distracted at school to Mary (Jane) having a hard time handling being constantly worried about Peter getting hurt (not calling her Mary Jane is the biggest problem I have with these revisions). This latter point comes to a head after Spider-Man has a bad encounter with the police who are gunning for him because he has been robbing banks and killing police officers. Actually, it is somebody impersonating Spider-Man, which is just another part of the growing headache for our hero.

Bendis is taking pains to explore what it means to be a superhero when you are sixteen years old and in love with the girl next door, who is ticked off that Gwen Stacy has moved in with the Parkers. Meanwhile, the whole bit with Nick Fury and the rules of superheroes in the brave new Marvel universe continues to present intriguing possibilities for the future. Again, Bendis and artist Mark Bagley are taking there time with this one; 32 issues into "The Amazing Spider-Man" Peter Parker was a freshman at E.S.U., while here he is only a sophomore in high school. We can only imagine what he is going to go through before he reaches graduation day. "Public Scrutiny" is as good of a story arc as "Ultimate Spider-Man" has presented to date, even without the standard knock down, drag out fight with a super bad guy.

Note: Harry Osborne is back and is apparently applying for the role of Pacey in the "Dawson's Creek" parallel that is clearly at work here (Peter is Dawson, Mary is Joey, and Gwen is Jen). I swear, Bendis knows exactly what he is doing with this one. This trade paperback have just about gotten me up to speed on "Ultimate Spider-Man," which has proven to be an integral part of the Spider-Man renaissance.

Should have been called MISTAKEN IDENITY
This is a great story it is not as actoin packed as Vol 4 Legacy, but still a great story. Someone is dressed up as spider-man and commiting crimes. As if spidey's name wasnt already bad. It is the first time he gets shot and has the tragic death of Captain Stacy during a armored car chase. I will not reveal the culprit. It could be the cameleon or just some crazy kid you decide.

overall good book
these ultimate spidermans just keep getting better and better. # 4 was awesome and this one definetly rocks. read this!!!

Exactly what the title promises!
This book is exactly what its title promises, it is written in pleasant language and contains much useful information for experienced and not pilots. It points out the beauty of flying, dispells popular misconceptions and it is best read by those with at least a couple of flying hours behind them. The writer is an obvious guru of flying and know his stuff!

Fills A Gap In The Ultralight Pilot's Education
This book is for pilots beyond the beginner stage. Pick any subject and you'll frequently notice that there's a scarcity of valuable information beyond the student/introductory level, or else the information is too theoretical and analytical to be of much use.

This book hits the spot for those of us who've become comfortable with the basics, but are hungry to become better pilots. There is a dangerous period that pilots go through where we think we've "got it", but don't really have enough experience (ala JFK Jr.). Jack Lambie states that we should be able to fly in any kind of weather and conditions, handle cross-wind landings, etc., just like G.A. pilots.

This book focuses on how to stay out of trouble, and what to do when you get in trouble. It also contains much practical information, such as how to handle airport traffic.

Between the time that I ordered this book and now, I've had a engine out on a full-power nose-high climbout, with just a couple hundred feet altitude to work with. The study and practice all paid off in the next 10 seconds.

Good Luck and Happy Flying!

If it had wings, Jack knew how it worked and could fly it.
Jack and I met in 1961 when he was Director of Education at the Science and Industry Museum in Exposition Park. I was a freshman at USC. He hired me as a tourguide, but he really wanted to learn how to play trumpet like me. We started trading flying lessons for trumpet lessons and became lifelong friends. Jack was a natural at everything that he did. Some people call it Zen and some call it intuition to be able to see the connections. Besides this book, I would recommend anything that he wrote because there is a casual wisdom here that should be absorbed. Jack died May 30,1999. He was the coolest guy that I ever knew. I will miss him.

Excellent Book
I,myself, do not have arthritus but a family member does. I knew nothing about it until I read this book.. It certainly helped me to understand the different types of arthritand what to do. This is a book I havereferred to over & over. Thankyou Miss Iannucci!

An easy read on a complicated subject
As a sports participant since I was a kid, I have recently found out, through MRI's, that I have arthritis in both of my knees. Since I have also had knee surgery, I wanted to learn how I could still participate in sports without adding to the pain caused by this arthritis. As a 40 year old, I feel I'm way too young to be held back by arthritis. This book provided an easy read on a complicated subject. I was able to read how I could improve my way of life without giving up sports. In addition, the book gave me some ideas on preventive care and how changing my diet could help. Ms. Iannucci presented Dr. Horowitz's medical lingo in a down to earth fashion that will make you return to the book for reference again and again, even after you have initially read it. I recommend the book and have given it a deserved five star rating. Cudos on a job well done !

writing is good - provides a down to earth summary of topic
I have read numerous articles from this writer and found her to be very down to earth in a writing style that is easy to understand. She covers this subject in a lay person terminology so that the reader can appreciate the subject while learning.

Order it from Vault.com
This is a great book, but if you need it right away and don't want to pay a special handling fee order it directly from Vault.com. The eBook version is also available there as well as the new 2003 edition that is not available yet in bookstores.

a superb book and the only one of its kind
i don't normally write reviews as i'm too busy slaving away as a lawyer...but i must add my $.02 this vault guidebook is astonishingly good. my fellow lawyers and i can't get enough of "The Buzz" which tells what lawyers are saying about various firms. this is the ONLY resource that tells it like it is in the arduous, sometimes rewarding, sometimes nauseating world of BIGLAW

The best edition yet!!!
The folks at Vault have really outdone themselves. This new edition is huge and very much expanded from previous editions. The material inside is all new as well. The have increased the detail and have done an incredible job providing the scoop on the top law firms in the country (including many that didn't make the top 50). They have included information on the quality of life rankings and their methodology. The book is invaluable for any law student as well as any lawyer considering a lateral move. I have a copy on my desk at a prominent law school and find people constantly borrowing it. Highly recommended.

Wagons for the Santa Fe Trade: Wheeled Vehicles and Their Makers, 1822-1880
Published in Hardcover by University of New Mexico Press (June, 2000)
Author: Mark L. Gardner
Amazon base price: $45.00

An Essential Contribution to the Field
"Mark Gardner, who is one of the foremost trail historians of our day, an eminent researcher, and an excellent writer, has now entered the ranks of vehicle historians trying to make some sense out of transport history and the vehicles involved therein. This contribution to both historical trail documentation and the vehicle bibliography as well is superb. No serious scholar involved in either discipline can ignore this book." -- from The Carriage Journal

Mark Gardner, "Wagonmaster"
Among the abundance of literature on various aspects of Santa Fe Trail history, Mark Gardner's _Wagons for the Santa Fe Trade_ begins a new dialog about the development and variance of Trade-related wagon technology. The book documents advances in wagon building techniques as the Trade became more complex and sophisticated. The story of Santa Fe Trail wagon making is the story of the growth and changes in the development of wheeled vehicles designed for heavy-duty long range freighting. The Santa Fe Trade was a primary proving ground for freight wagon building and adaptability. This book grew out of a National Park Service report Gardner prepared on Santa Fe Trail wagons intended for use as a resource for the Santa Fe National Historic Trail project. This version is greatly expanded from the original. From the outset it will become obvious to readers how much painstaking work and time went into its production. During the course of his research he discovered a personal side to the story. His chapter "From Shop to Factory" allowed him to connect with the wagon building business through four generations of his own ancestors, some of whom had worked in the Missouri sawmill industry, and had probably cut lumber intended for the construction of the very freight wagons he now writes about. Gardner has a reputation in the profession for sifting through mounds of paper and microfilm, uncovering lost treasures of material. This reviewer has respectfully nicknamed him "The Mole" because of his research skills. His ability to dig and root through archive and manuscript collections and find the most obscure and previously unknown, yet meaningful bits of information has earned him a place among the great names in today's western historiography. With many books and articles to his credit, Mark Gardner is arguably one of the foremost authorities on the Santa Fe Trade. This latest effort guarantees Gardner's place as heir apparent to the title of Dean of Santa Fe Trail historians. _Wagons for the Santa Fe Trade_ is a detailed, yet coherent guide to nineteenth century freight vehicles. It is a highly beneficial research tool, as well as a pleasant recreational read.

Wind Wagon's West
Perhaps the trade in wagons on the Santa Fe Trail is best summarized in one breathtaking quote from a newspaper in 1841:

"Six horse wagons are constructed in Pittsburg, loaded with assorted goods from New York and Philadelphia, transported to Independence in Missouri, and there driven across the country to Mexico . . ."

The great wagons of trade were the means by which the Far West was opened. Mark L. Gardner's "Wagons for the Santa Fe Trade," tells who built these wagons, how they were built and the changes in design as the years passed. Perhaps what comes through most clearly is that the great freight wagons were complex pieces of technology, best constructed by a factory system, not unlike how automobiles are assembled today. By means of these wagons, the South West was brought into contact with the United States, and, eventually, absorbed into the Union. An important and vital chapter of American history well told and well documented.

The final chapter deals with the adventure of the Wind Wagon. In these days of high gas prices it is charming to consider that an attempt was made to avoid high mule prices. A sailed wagon was actually patented (the patent drawings are in the book) and launched. Sometimes the stuff of legend is the truth.

really gets you walking
i've been walking for a long time but this book got me walking every day instead of once in a while and taught me how to get the maximum out of my walks. i've stopped obssessing about my weight and my whole attitude towards my body and towards the concept of regular exercise has changed. the best thing about this book is that it is a daily, weekly and yearly companion that keeps you on the exercise regime. fenton's writing is guiless and honest -- a friendly push out the door. no criticism, just encouragement to start enjoying the natural movement of your own body. his frankness and simplicity are refreshing.

Excellent Fitness Book!
This is one of the best written fitness books out there (and I've read a ton of 'em). Fenton covers topics from how to start a beginning walking program to competetive speed walking, and everything in between. It's well written and presented and is actually fun to read. More importantly, you'll learn it's fun to walk for fitness. A great start for beginners, but also a good motivator for seasoned exercisers.

Walk this way!
The Complete Guide to Walking is everthing you need to get started with (or to get better at) a walking program. Mark Fenton covers just about every topic you can think of asking about, from beginning to advanced programs, gearing up for walks, and treadmills, to stretching, nutrition, strength training, and getting you motivated and enthusiastic about walking. His easy writing style, his humor and enthusiasm go a long way to get you off the couch and out the door to enjoy all the pleasures of a good walk. The book itself is beautifully laid out with many color photos, interesting sidebars and stories, and a one-year log incorporated into the book to help you along. The resource list is comprehensive, with clubs, apparel, gear manufacturers, strollers, and walkable-community information. I am using this book as my guide for weight loss and better health, and give it my highest recommendation. If you've never been able to get with any kind of physical activity consistently, this is the book that will help you do it!

Excellent tool for ESL student verbal practice/fun.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! This book works beautifully with secondary and adult English language learners. The preview activities introduce the characters, concepts, and vocabulary using Anticipation Charts and other second-language teaching techniques. Students are also required to discuss their opinion with others. Also included are easy to teach "How to Read a Play" and "Stage Directions" pages. The characters and some phrases are geared toward Spanish-speaking English language learners but work equally well in multilingual classes since a "Spanish Glossary" of the expressions is included. The "Review" section provides perfectly appropriate and fun follow-up activities. Students really enjoy producing their own play, and the classic story has been rewritten specifically so that ESL students can relate to it. A high level of enthusiasm and participation is evident.

Great for teaching reading! Even in special education!
We used this book and "The Cowboy and the Wildcat," as supplementary reading texts for Middle School Special Education Literature and they were EXCELLENT! I highly recommend them and hope the authors produce more.

Used in ESL class. Delightfully creative play.
Fun remake of the Tom Sawyer whitewashing story. This play is for ESL instructors and students who want to do an energetic project. The Wall will encourage and lead students towards their goals without intimidation. A rich sampling of the english language is masterfully woven into a wonderful new tale, yet is simple enough to delight students of all abilities.

addiction weight loss
I am a proffesional counselor with eight years experience. I have worked with addictions from weight loss to abuse and find this book a very clean and balanced presentation. This book summarizes what I want everyone to learn and understand about the choices we all make and the thoughts that we struggle with as human beings. I recommend this book to anyone wanting a better understanding of themselves and others. I also have had a chance to meet the author and found him to be authentic and caring.

How to break the soul-impoverished downward spiral
In Wanting More: The Challenge Of Enjoyment In The Age Of Addiction, psychologist and therapist Mark Chamberlain shows how to break the soul impoverished downward spiral of acquiring more and more, even while we enjoy our possessions less and less. Chamberlain offers insightful, articulate, and practical commentary regarding the time-honored principles of self-control, patience, and awareness (regardless of personal circumstance) that will enhance the quality and enjoyment of our daily lives, relationships, and activities. Wanting More is an impressive and very welcome addition to self-help and self-improvement reading lists and library reference collections.

Phenomenal...
This book gives a candid perspective on how we dull our senses and our capacity to enjoy life...and ultimately provides a game plan to regain our sensitivity to life's little pleasures! It's a thought provoking book that is definitely worth the read...

Islamists vs Isalm
A magnificent book, all 228 pages. Huband's documentation alone is enough to guarantee the high quality of this book to anyone interested in the Islamist movement.

Underated:....
More than ever, it has become imperative for the West to understand the Arab world. Warriors of the Prophet chronicles Osama bin Laden's ascent to power during the Islamic Afghan resistance to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Author Mark Huband reveals the important role bin Laden played in uniting the Arab Muslims with their Afghan compatriots and spreading the ideology of the jihad, or holy war, to protect Islam, to all the various Islamic factions that took part in the war in Afghanistan. Although a number of recent books address the rise of fundamentalist movements in the Islamic world, none attempt to explain to general readers the emergence, character, and significance of that revival, nor do they bring together the many voices dividing both conservative and liberal currents in the region. I found this book extremely useful and quite compelling - a surefire way to get at the Middle East "problem" and ways in which we can do something about it. The tone is fluid yet serious, just the kind of perspective I needed. I recommended this with great confidence.

Huband Offers Incredible Insight
...I turned to this book with the hope that author Mark Huband could shed some light upon the enigma known as the fundamentalist Islamic phenomenon. From a layperson's standpoint, this book was an invaluable resource for understanding the complexities of the Middle East factions, including their history, motives, religious beliefs, and political alliances. Fortunately, the book takes specific notice of Osama bin Laden and the Islamic movements in Afghanistan, an eerie predilection of their role in future world events. With the author's journalistic style and personal anecdotes, the book held my interest as well as its significance to present circumstances. Educating ourselves is the only way we can begin to make sense of the motives behind the terrorist acts, and I found no better resource than Warriors of the Prophet. It has my highest recommendation.
