Great Fun. Pretty Factual.
I recomend the book. Written well. Nice and factual. Fun. Good at putting the reader in the place and time.

the guts, the glory, the gobbing...it's all here.
An excellent document of a time long-gone, "Sniffin' Glue: The Essential Punk Accessory" takes you back to the days of attitude, spit and projectile pint glasses. In existence for a mere 12 months, the UK fanzine "Sniffin' Glue" rose from humble beginnings (an initial print run numbering just a meager 50 copies) to a circulation into the thousands, just by the third issue. Of course, Mark Perry, S.G.'s creator, urged readers to tear their copies to shreds in reaction to this sudden success. I assume they didn't, and now we've got this handsome and distinguished volume, which is a welcome addition to any self-loathing punk's bookshelf. They're all here, from well-knowns like the Clash, the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, to more obscure but equally excellent bands like Eater and the Adverts. Even the layout and design of the book is spot on: the front half is chock-full of glossy pix of the bands and informative texts to go with them, and the back half is every single issue of the zine, printed authentically on smelly newsprint-ish paper. All in all, this is a gloriously raw and authentic trip back to punk's heyday, and one of the better punk books to come along in a while.

Tapes are Excellent, Book is ok
I thought the tapes were very well done and would highly recommend them for a beginner or someone needing a review. I took a few years of French over 10 years ago and these tapes brought be back up to speed very quickly. The book, however, is full of little errors that indicate it was not quality checked before printing. As long as you can deal with that, it is still very helpful. I would ask the publisher to edit and also update the style of the book - it looks like it was printed in 1970.

Real Communication, Really Fast
Language Dynamics courses are the only courses I know of that are truly dedicated to effective and immediate communication in the target language. Academic courses often reflect the literary interests of professors, many of whom never had the experience of learning the target language as a second language. With these courses, you can hit the streets after every lesson knowing you can say more than you could yesterday.

Looking for spirituality in the workplace?
My ongoing professional development involves a commitment to read books that have nothing to do with my profession. I chose this book for two reasons: It is the textual basis for a faith-sharing program in which I am involved at my church. I also thought its subject was far a-field from my job as a preceptor/facilitator.It appears I was mistaken on the second reason.

Gregory Pierce is in the publishing business, he's a husband and father, and he's active in his church and civic communities. The subtitle, "10 ways to balance your life on the job" is really what the book is all about. As he puts it, "It is pretty clear that God is present on our workplaces. Yet the workplace is a difficult place to 'be spiritual.' It is noisy, crowded, complex, competitive, materialistic, tiring, frustrating, dangerous, busy, [and] secular. To find God there, we have [to work hard at it], and most of our traditional spiritual disciplines are not well designed to help us do that."

This is the belief that forms his thesis and Pierce's life experiences provided the motivation for his writing. The writing is crisp and clear, and, unlike similar spiritual books, is not aimed at changing one's belief systems about God, but it's rather a 'how-to' book on achieving a higher level of spirituality in the workplace.

Pierce establishes some common language for us about work, defines spirituality, and he adds some ground rules about how he wants us to focus on what he refers to as spirituality disciplines. He presents ten disciplines, or practices, for spiritual improvement and invites our examination in the context of what we do with each area daily.

This book revealed more about leadership than I first imagined. Woven into each discussion on each of the disciplines are anecdotal quotes concerning how each person practices their spirituality and why it's important for them to do so. Although he didn't use the term servant-leader, Pierce shares this from a social worker who was talking about her boss:
"She was direct and honest but never disparaging of others. She was strategic but not conniving. Her power came from her vision, not just from the authority she held by virtue of her position. She was gentle in her correction or direction of others- affirming not mushy. [She] was passionate but not emotional, smart, tolerant of other views but always clear about her own. She treated others like she wanted to be treated, and others who worked for her eventually began to behave that way too." This reflects that notion of Robert Greenleaf's servant leadership plus the "modeling the way" espoused by Kouzes and Posner.

These ten disciplines remind one of Stephen Covey's Seven Habits, especially Pierce's last discipline entitled "Engaging in Ongoing Personal and Professional Development." This was almost a carbon copy of Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. The book is simply constructed, with just enough thought provocation on each spirituality discipline followed at chapter end by a section prescribing real-life methods of practicing each discipline discussed in that chapter. Great stuff!

This was a well-conceived and well-researched book by an author who convinced me that he had experienced the same kinds of issues and problems faced by those searching to practice spirituality at work. I recommend putting this book on your leadership bookshelf for the practical lessons it teaches and for the timelessness of the author's prescription for a balanced life.

Spirituality for the Rest of Us
This wonderful little book could be aptly subtitled "Spirituality for the rest of us." Pierce, who confesses himself "piety-impaired," has written a practical, day-to-day handbook for discovering the divine presence as it lurks in some of the places we may least expect it.

This is not a book about how to cope with jobs that overwhelm and diminish us. It is rather a step-by-step set of instructions, which Pierce terms "disciplines," through which we may actively transform our daily grind (whether we're priests or poets, doctors, lawyers, butchers, bakers or candlestick-makers) into our own best crack at co-creation of the world. It is not a book about getting away from the world, but rather a book about getting really into the world with our spiritual wholeness intact, about remembering to remember that God is present among the daily hum and rattle, if only we have the personal discipline to look. Not a book to read and put away or pass along, you'll want to keep it desk-side, a User's Manual for the spirit, available for ready reference.

A summary of the Spanish American War.
At a little over 200 pages, this book covers the main battles of the Spanish American War. These include the two naval battles off Santiago and Manila, and the land campaigns in Puerto Rico,Cuba and the Philippine Islands. So if you are into the military aspect of the war, this is the book for you. If you need the political reasons, see Trask's book about the war or another called Empire by Default. This is a good summary of the war, but not an explanation for the reason of the war. However, the book is well written and very readable.

The Bible on The Spanish American War
This book by Frank Freidel is my favorite on the subject. "You may fire when ready, Gridley," says Commodore Dewey at the battle of Manila Bay. And so does Frank Freidel. That action took place just five days after President McKinley signed the resolution for war with Spain and Freidel puts the reader there. Freidel puts the reader right in the midst of the twin battles of El Caney and San Juan Hill in Cuba on July 1, 1898. The outcome of these battles spelled the success or failure of the American expeditionary force. Of San Juan Hill Theodore Roosevelt stated bluntly that "The battle simply fought itself." This was a direct criticism of General Shafter. It's this type of writing and research by Frank Freidel that makes this book so interesting and an enjoyable read. This book has been around for a while. If it weren't good it wouldn't be around today.

A relatively comprehensive though dogmatic reference.
As a professional sprouter I have plenty of experience - and - have read every book under the sun on sprouts. Mark's book is full of terrible puns but when it comes to information on a wide variety of seeds is better than any other I have seen. It still suffers from the same problem as all the others - it states THE WAY to sprout. I have found that there are many ways to sprout and very few hard and fast rules. The result is that newbies follow the written advice and refrain from experimenting - thus limiting their sprouting experience and, I fear - the joy of that experience. It seems to me that everyone who writes books on sprouting must have read a book before they ever sprouted and that they eventually pass on the same misinformation they originally took as fact. I on the other hand didn't read a book until I'd sprouted for a year or more, and when I did I read that things that worked well for me couldn't possibly work at all. So, take what you read with a grain of salt and know this: seeds want to germinate (sprout). If you expose them to moisture they will do it, so sprouting is nothing more than making the the conditions good. Experiment freely. Happy Sprouting :-)

Sproutguy's revised review of the Revised Edition
Mark did a great job of updating this book! It is packed with a whole lot more info (not that the 1st edition wasn't packed as well) and is layed out beautifully. All I said in my review of the 1st edition still goes, but I now kinda enjoy the puns and the additional info makes this book even more indispensable. This is the BEST BOOK ON SPROUTING that currently exists! When all is said and done this is what remains: We (The Sproutpeople) have grown over 180 tons of sprouts (by hand) - from over 70 types of seed - since 1993, and when we have a question that we don't know the answer to, we pick up THIS BOOK!

Holocaust picture book
An elderly lady retells events from her childhood. She describes her confusion and fear when her best friend has to wear a yellow star, her sadness when her friend mysteriously disappears one night and her enduring hope of finding her again. Great introduction for learning about the Jews under Nazi Germany. Reading level is third grade but good as a read aloud to younger children. Very moving.

Wonderful Teaching Tool to discuss the Holocaust
Each year I do a thematic unit on the Holocaust and this is one of the picture books that I use with my sixth grade students. They enjoy the story and the pictures portray the writer's feelings were very.

Buy the updated version!!
It is a well written book, but this edition is plagued with print errors, and mistakes in at least one chart. Don't make the same mistake I did; buy the last edition (I bought mine on the store with very little time ...) Anyway, I guess the last version is corrected and updated. I like the fact that mixes personal experience with academic and corporate studies about the market!

Good Content / Great Value
For the price this is a great book to learn and help understand the specifics that make up all the basics in trading commodity-futures. After reading this book, I felt as if I had taken a formal college course on the subject of Futures and understood it much better from various angles now. There's no "hype" in the book, no agendas, no further products or services to buy being pitched to you, just plain vanilla (ok, french vanilla) basics being laid out for you in textbook fashion for you to digest in your own terms. I like that - it's refreshing in a way. It is probably like this because it was really written 20+ years ago (don't worry, it's been revised many times to be modernized - 5th edition, 1993). The book was originally written and printed in "Commodities" magazine as a popular mini-course series (before the magazine changed it's name to the modern "Futures" magazine we know it as today). Even though I knew much of the content from personal experience (the most costly way) or from other readings, my CTA, etc, I did not always understand the "why" behind the rules I was following & how the markets work the way they do from both a technical and fundmental perspective (dynamics). Of the some 28 chapters, I really took interest in almost every one. I can't say that about most of the other trading books I've read. Put it this way... if I could keep only 5 trading books, this would be one of them. You'll likely dump more than that on the commissions for 1 trade - or, worse yet, even more than that on 1 bad trade. ** Beginners, I recommend the following: If your goal is to have deeper pockets from trading - then you must first go deeper in your understanding of futures markets & trading them (i.e. Read the book).

Steamboats & sailors of the Great Lakes
Published in Unknown Binding by Wayne State University Press ()
Author: Mark L. Thompson
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Intersting, well researched with some innacuracies.
As someone who has sailed on Great Lakes steamships, I found this book to pretty well capture the essense of the trade. One innacuracy in the book deals with women on board. The author states that women are more likely to sail on freighters these days because there is little if any hard physical labor. While many women would be more than capable of working shipboard, I can assure you there is PLENTY of physically demanding jobs to do on board. Also note that the industry is constantly evolving so many of the fleets have gotten smaller in the years since the book was penned. All in all, though, if you have ever been intrigued by Great Lakes shipping, this book is the most comprehensive review I have ever seen. A good book.

Great Information/ Great Book
Mark Thompson is a excellent author that tells things how they are. He does not "sugar coat" life on the lakes or about the Great lakes Shipping industry. If you want a easy to read truthful acount of Great Lakes Shipping then this is the book for you.

Steel Tiger is a great war story.
Do you like a book that is able to take you to the front of a war and able to make you feel that your there with the characters? If you do, then you'll love STEEL TIGER by Mark Bernet. This book is able to put you in the cockpit of an F-4 and in the heat of battle in the air and on the ground. Mark Bernet is able to give you the feeling that you have known the characters, your their best freinds, and they are telling you the story as you sit and have a cold one. Court bannister is the main character and the most believable: he si a major in the air force serving our country in the Veitnam War. STEEL TIGER is a book about the special bonds that are fromed between pilots an d co-pilots in the air and on the ground. It teaches that if you don't trust the person you fly with, than its most likely that you may end up dead or a prison of war. It portrays that the war is about people, those on both sides,(good or bad) and the stories that they can tell you. It shows that even though you have to fight the other side that they are not all bad people. The book was well writen and full of exiting dog fights and bar room fights that make you feel like you are in the air force and with the men of the Veitnam War.

Vietnam ---Tom Clancy style.....
More than mere paperbacks novels, reliving of a painful though now fabulously nostalgic era. A tale of good men in a bad war, I think i saw someplace,or on the review comments on back jacket, to be honest I didnt expect as fine a read as I ended up with from both 'Rolling Thunder' and 'Steel Tiger, having bought the second at a Sunday market 2nd hand for a song, I soon realized I had 'discovered' Mr Berent, who is a decorated USAF Vietnam pilot, someone who flew F4 MiG CAP over Hanoi, for those who know what that means. Mr Berent weaves fictional characters like gifted pilots but troubled souls Bannister and Parker, Special Forces rough-n-tough 'Wolf Lochert', who calls people 'ScheissKoph' for those with high-school German, but will punch your lights out for taking the Lords name in vain, and senior Pentagon AF-command types like 'Whitey' Whisenand, into the fabric and knit of a tale and an atmosphere with real characters such as Lyndon Johnson, Robert Strange McNamara ( an auto company civilian president who was placed in charge of Americas forces and war, echos of Mr Rumsfeld) and real-life Vietnam Airforce ace Robin Olds. Many chapters begin with a tom Clancy style geo-political or techical background preface, and like Mr Clancys chapters this really works, the depth of research, as well as the reminisce. The tale rollocks along, through triumph and tragedy, with a Vietnamese double-agent among Locherts special forces cadre, and Berent is able to take you in wind-whistling ride through Bannister and Parkers air combat missions, with loads but not too much technical explanation of jet-fighters, weapons and dogfights, and why not, Mr Berent went there and did it himself, with a silver-star and DFC in recognition.
I am a fan of Mr Berents Vietnam air-war series, his characters and his writing of this Hendrix/Animals/Byrds war and era, I wound-up sending to Amazons 'Fiction Addiction' bookshop in SC to get 'Phantom Leader' and 'Storm Flight', the remainder of a 5-part trilogy? and which were hard to obtain in Australia. I commend that store and what I bought. If you like a comparable writing style with Clancy, you like credible though exciting fictional characters combining with a historical President Johnson deciding war strategy as he sits on bathroom ceramic furniture, and if you are fascinated by the halcyon events and atmosphere of Americas most divisive and lamented war, youll like Berents long punctuated saga.
