What did civilization do to our health?
The central message of this book is easy to convey: With the rise of civilization, health deteriorated. Of course this doesn't hold true for all of civilization all the time. But even to date the health of the less privileged in many Third World countries, and may be even that of the less privileged in our own big cities, is not better than that of hunter-gatherers from Paleolithic times. Contrary to current ideas held by many, the rise of agriculture, which allowed the birth of civilizations of ever increasing complexity, meant a step backward as far as health and nutrition is concerned.

The main part of the book is rather short, some 140 pages. Written as an extended essay, this part reviews the evolution of human society, the history of disease as related to this evolution, and the impact this evolution had on nutrition. Two chapters, one on present day hunter-gatherer societies, the other on palaeopathology, then evaluate evidence for the views presented in the earlier chapters. Cohen is clear to point out the weaknesses of the various forms of evidence, but taken together the evidence substantially supports his case.

The next 80 pages are notes, while another 25 pages contain references, all in small print. These notes contain a wealth of detailed information; sometimes they are more like a small review on a particular topic than a simple note. This level of detail would certainly detract from the line of argument if it were included in the main part of the text. So I found this choice for presenting the material a happy one.

The main text is particularly well organized and well written too. Despite the fact that the information content is dense, the text is surprisingly readable. All in all, the author has done a particularly good job. For anyone interested in the history of health, this is a must read!

Great book!
This book is excellent! It shows real understanding of a young girl growing up in Japan--though her case is special because of her mother's shameful lifestyle. She endures the taunts and criticisms of her peers, the abuse of an older man, and the agonies of hatred, jealousy, and desire for revenge in her own heart. She finds the answer to her suffering in Jesus Christ. The book, largely autobiographical, I believe, does not give pat answers to difficult questions. I found this book very powerful not only in my own life but also as a junior high school teacher.

a devilare in rebellion
this play is the IDEAL MAN in America. He is trapped. Doesn't know where he's going. Works day to day:with memories that stitch him and make him go violently out of control.

The main character represents the common anger ideal man in society...trapped within his own hell hole and not knowing how to communicate with the outside world. This defintely is one of the best plays I've read.

The best strategy guide of 1999
Even before I bought the game, I knew I would love it because I've been waiting for it for nine months. But when I bought the games the first day it came out, I had some trouble learning how to beat the levels, but when I bought the book I flew flew the game. I still had some trouble, but It helped me out so much. I recommend this book to everybody who buys Heavy Gear 2 to also buy the strategy guide by Mark H. Walker. It is definitley worth it.

Thank you, Michael Ricottone

Cute fun with pull tabs
Actually for ages 2-6, not 4-8. A plump hen goes shopping to various stores for her friends and neighbors. The reader watches her work down her list, and then can fill her basket as she moves through the pages by pulling down the pull tabs. In addition, there are cheeky, funny flip up tab results, like worms appearing under the apple-pull-tab, or a satiated mouse in a flip up bread box. The reader can name the fruits at the stall, name the shapes of the baker's breads, the colors on the florist's blooms, name the sizes of the dairyman's milk cartons, or the countries' flags on his cheese wedges. And then you can guess what is missing on the last page.
