Book Description
The Mississippi River and Mark Twain are practically synonymous in American culture. Known as "America's river," the popularity of Twain's steamboat and steamboat pilots the on the ever-changing Mississippi has endured prominently over the years.

Samuel Clemens became a licensed river pilot at the age of 24 under the apprenticeship of Horace Bixby, pilot of the Paul Jones. His name, Mark Twain, was derived from the river pilot term describing safe navigating conditions or "mark two fathoms" thus shortened to mark twain by the leadsmen whose job it was to monitor the water's depth and report it to the pilot.

Although Mark Twain used his childhood experiences growing up along the Mississippi in numerous works, nowhere is the river and pilot's life more thoroughly described than in Life on the Mississippi.

This enhanced ebook is a digital reproduction, As Published in 1883. Extensively illustrated throughout. This book is also avaliable as a Hardcover (ISBN 1582182647) and Tradepaper edition (ISBN 1582182639).

Compelling and interesting
An excellent inside view of what it was like for 8 people to live inside the Biosphere 2 for two years. This book sparked my interest in leading a healthier life, and in trying to live with as little impact on the Earth as possible. When you consider what terrible impact any outside toxins (e.g. pesticides) would have had inside Biosphere 2, you have to wonder what effects the toxins are having on us, out here in Biosphere 1 (Earth). Definitely a well-written book; a good read; very compelling.

An original and highly recommended work
Harold Holzer, Gabor S. Boritt, and Mark E. Neeley Jr. effectively collaborate to present The Lincoln Image: Abraham Lincoln And The Popular Print. Their work, profusely enhanced with period photographs (as well as iconography immediately following his assassination) documenting how popular prints served to make Lincoln's image of the popular and political culture of his day. An original and highly recommended work, The Lincoln Image is a impressive study of painstaking and exhaustive scholarship that will be greatly appreciated by academia, Lincoln studies supplemental curriculum reading lists, and students of 19th Century American political history.

The best thorough guide I've seen!
This book goes over in great detail of how to use Linux. It starts off basic, and works its way up to tackle the complex commands that most people overlook due to the commands limited use or complexity. (ie, EMACS, sed, awk, etc)

Since it starts off very basic, and explains how to use the basic system so that even a new computer user could start learning, you wouldn't think it also would be a great reference to the linux guru. I've been using Linux for about 5 years now, and I consider myself a Linux guru, and I DO find it very useful. The way it is organized into two parts (tutorials in one part, the lexicon which provides the lower level references, in another) allows for easy skimming for someone who just needs to look something up, or allow you to go through it and not get bored by reading a dictionary of terms and usage glossary.

Amazing Book!
This is the story of Marco Polo, told with a poets ear.
Frutkin uses this most interesting of historical figures
to explore what it means to be human. (No pun intended.)
Though this is a fictional account, I feel closer to
Polo than any sterile account could have taken me. This
story is filled with magic, and all connected to the
statue of the winged Lion of Venice that guards
Marco Polo's hometown. To Marco, the Lion is real,
a fiece guardian guiding him in times of danger.
And there is plenty of danger for a traveler in the 13th Century.
From desert sand storms to distrustful natives,
Marco sees it all. Marco Polo's journey from Venice to
China and back to Venice again took almost a quarter of a
century. He saw amazing sights, he endured illness and
difficult traveling conditions. And he lived to tell his
tale. And oh what a telling it is. I was hooked from
the first word to the last. I could have read this
book in a day, but instead I took a month in hopes
of savoring every turn of phrase and every image Frutkin
evokes. In my family there is a waiting list to read
this book, and the list keeps growing. Get this book
and you will not be disapointed.

The Lion's Roar: A Beginner's Bible Study on the Gospel of St. Mark

Found the perfect Bible study!
Synopsis:
We've found the perfect Bible study in Lion's Roar! It is truly a rare find in that it manages to accomplish all the following: an easy writing style yet full of insightful commentaries and introspective questions, an excellent format, and solid Catholic teaching!

Details:
We in our Catholic men's study group have been hard-pressed to find a decent Bible study that is appropriate for our group's format. The Bible study material we have considered have either been lacking in solid Catholic teaching, or had a format and flow that didn't quite meet our group's needs.

That is, until we came upon The Lion's Roar. Here are the reasons why this Bible study appealed to us like no other material:

1) the 1-hour format of the discussion section fits our group's format. This section is further divided into 3 subsections, with a time duration sugggested for each subsection. To further help the flow, the subsections are named so as to serve as metaphors for the steps that a carpenter (like Jesus) would take to create a fine piece of woodwork.

2) the self-study questions are smartly separated from the group discussion questions. Usually, there is a general slew of questions that are asked with each study unit, not all of which are appropriate for group discussion. Questions that elicit factual, one-line answers are great for self-study, but can be awkward in a group setting. The self-study portion does require that you do your homework beforehand, so you show up to the study armed with ideas that make for more fruitful discussions.

3) it is based on solid Catholic-based teaching of scripture, even containing both Imprimatur and Nihil obstat stamps of approval, which is rare these days.

4) the writing style is easy and relaxed, yet very insightful and full of interesting facts and commentaries.

5) St. Mark's gospel lends itself well to Bible study because of its relative brevity compared to the other gospels.

Edge of the seat historical fantasy
Combined with the breathtaking narration by Mr. Auberjonois, and the scintillating prose produced so effortlessly by Mr. Frost, this first time novel/audio listens like a breakneck roller coaster ride. I came to dread its finish. It is the sublime mixture of fantasy and adventure which propels this work into one of the best audio novels I have ever heard.

Listener In The Snow: The Practice And Teaching Of Poetry

Listener In The Snow
Mark Statmans, Listener in the Snow thoroughly interrogates the many strands of experience that inform both critical teaching and the creation of poetry. Statman meditatively charts his many years of teaching in a way that exposes not only his well composed lessons, but his motivations. This book raises questions that all good teachers face; how do we construct an environment that motivates children to achieve fluency with their own imaginations and the world that surrounds them? The anecdotal style of the book brings the reader into close proximity with the infinite possibilities of teaching literature in applicable, meaningful and transforming ways. I walked away from this book as I walk away from any good conversation, curious and reinvested in the children that brought me to teaching in the first place. I recommend this book to educators of all sorts, writers and to anyone who sees the world as a place to grow in.
