Samuel Clemens became a licensed river pilot at the age of 24 under the apprenticeship of Horace Bixby, pilot of the Paul Jones. His name, Mark Twain, was derived from the river pilot term describing safe navigating conditions or "mark two fathoms" thus shortened to mark twain by the leadsmen whose job it was to monitor the water's depth and report it to the pilot.
Although Mark Twain used his childhood experiences growing up along the Mississippi in numerous works, nowhere is the river and pilot's life more thoroughly described than in Life on the Mississippi.

Since it starts off very basic, and explains how to use the basic system so that even a new computer user could start learning, you wouldn't think it also would be a great reference to the linux guru. I've been using Linux for about 5 years now, and I consider myself a Linux guru, and I DO find it very useful. The way it is organized into two parts (tutorials in one part, the lexicon which provides the lower level references, in another) allows for easy skimming for someone who just needs to look something up, or allow you to go through it and not get bored by reading a dictionary of terms and usage glossary.

Frutkin uses this most interesting of historical figures
to explore what it means to be human. (No pun intended.)
Though this is a fictional account, I feel closer to
Polo than any sterile account could have taken me. This
story is filled with magic, and all connected to the
statue of the winged Lion of Venice that guards
Marco Polo's hometown. To Marco, the Lion is real,
a fiece guardian guiding him in times of danger.
And there is plenty of danger for a traveler in the 13th Century.
From desert sand storms to distrustful natives,
Marco sees it all. Marco Polo's journey from Venice to
China and back to Venice again took almost a quarter of a
century. He saw amazing sights, he endured illness and
difficult traveling conditions. And he lived to tell his
tale. And oh what a telling it is. I was hooked from
the first word to the last. I could have read this
book in a day, but instead I took a month in hopes
of savoring every turn of phrase and every image Frutkin
evokes. In my family there is a waiting list to read
this book, and the list keeps growing. Get this book
and you will not be disapointed.
We've found the perfect Bible study in Lion's Roar! It is truly a rare find in that it manages to accomplish all the following: an easy writing style yet full of insightful commentaries and introspective questions, an excellent format, and solid Catholic teaching!
Details:
We in our Catholic men's study group have been hard-pressed to find a decent Bible study that is appropriate for our group's format. The Bible study material we have considered have either been lacking in solid Catholic teaching, or had a format and flow that didn't quite meet our group's needs.
That is, until we came upon The Lion's Roar. Here are the reasons why this Bible study appealed to us like no other material:
1) the 1-hour format of the discussion section fits our group's format. This section is further divided into 3 subsections, with a time duration sugggested for each subsection. To further help the flow, the subsections are named so as to serve as metaphors for the steps that a carpenter (like Jesus) would take to create a fine piece of woodwork.
2) the self-study questions are smartly separated from the group discussion questions. Usually, there is a general slew of questions that are asked with each study unit, not all of which are appropriate for group discussion. Questions that elicit factual, one-line answers are great for self-study, but can be awkward in a group setting. The self-study portion does require that you do your homework beforehand, so you show up to the study armed with ideas that make for more fruitful discussions.
3) it is based on solid Catholic-based teaching of scripture, even containing both Imprimatur and Nihil obstat stamps of approval, which is rare these days.
4) the writing style is easy and relaxed, yet very insightful and full of interesting facts and commentaries.
5) St. Mark's gospel lends itself well to Bible study because of its relative brevity compared to the other gospels.
