What An Action Filled Read
Mark Crockett has done excellent job in penning this story, which will have you on edge the entire time you are reading. Two homeless men Chickenhead and Jamaica set out to find the killer of Mimi Driver. Mimi, also homeless was the girlfriend of Chickenhead. The police department becomes nerved and on edge after finding out Mimi is the daughter of a prominent Mayor. Chickenhead and Jamaica outraged at the fact the police cannot catch this brutal murderer; they decide to take matters into their own hands. They get so close to the killer they can touch him. Will they find out who the murderer is or will the murderer them out first and murder them? If you like an action pack read, this is the book for you!!!

Excellent Read!
From the first page to the last...I was glued to the story line, sympathetic for the victims, hating the perpetrator! This story had all the elements of a good book! ...great storyline, developed characters, pacing, realistic dialogue! Although this was a first book, it appears that Mark Crockett is a seasoned writer!

I could lose myself in this book as the author brought words, and pages to life. It was as if the reader was right in the scenes with the characters. The dialogue was extremely fitting for the characters, and the anguish, pain, and love from the main character, "Chickenhead," could be experienced.

I enjoyed Mark Crockett's approach of showing the reader the murderer early on, it increased the anticipation as the story cleverly unraveled. His writing abilities are representative of precise and methodical skill. It was an excellent read, full of surprises, and full of perfect timing! Great job, Mark, I can't wait for the next one!

Great book - for someone who knows a little about Unix...
I use this book as additional reading for my college Unix course. It is great for teaching advanced concepts, such as shell scripting and Unix administration fundamentals. However, it lacks in the introductory-level material, assuming the reader has a basic knowledge of Unix under their belt. I find this a great add-on to the "Unix System V Primer" by Waite, et al.

Mark Sobell is a god
A god is someone who can take something dense and uninviting and distill/explain it so that everyone from novice to expert benefits. Sobell does exactly that in UNIX System V: A Practical Guide. His Programming Tools chapter in particular provides an in-depth, clear explanation you will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. Two recommendations for the next edition: Sobell needs to 1)include more examples in the vi chapter, and 2)include an appendix with answers to review exercises. If you buy one book on the UNIX OS make sure it's this one!

why nobody ever recommended this book? it is really great!!!
I got it from our library, and found it very useful! very comprehensive and clear, best of all, unlike most of other unix book out there, this one has a lot of very illustrative graphies... you will benifit from that feature alot! I promise you!

Visual Guide to Lock Picking

Shows lock picking very well, but nothing new.
This is a pretty good book. It isn't as thorough as the MIT guide to lock picking on the web, but the pictures are better. This is about on par with Steve Hampton's book on lock picking. They cover the same locks and the same techniques. This is a good first book to learn to pick locks with, but it is short, and it doesn't have many methods in it. I got "How To Open Locks With Improvised Tools" at the same time, and that has about 10 times more ways to open locks besides just picking them.

Beginners Will Love It, Experts Will Reference It Everyday!
Most lockpicking books throw around technical terms without explaining to the user what exactly they mean. Not so with "The Visual Guide to Lockpicking". Not only does the author explain what a "sheer line" is, he shows you with well-drawn illustrations and in-depth depictions.

Beginners will find this book to be an valuable, hands-on guide with plenty of information, but experts will benefit even more. The book will likely replace every reference on their desks with this slim, knowledge-packed title.

One of the very best books on lockpicking I have seen in some time. I recommend it to my customers every time they ask "What book should I buy to learn lockpicking?".

Quite useful
Every now and then i would become interested in lockpicking and buy a new book. Unfortunately they would all talk about some shear line and wards without really explaining what they are or where they are inside the lock. I struck gold with this book since their illustrations clearly show where everything is and how it works. For the first time i was actually able to visualize the parts of my lock move. I would actually close my eyes and think of whats going on inside the lock and feel slight movements inside it. I must complain though, this book left me yearning for more, now i can't wait for the second volume.

enamored of Millay
Daniel Mark Epstein, like so many men of her own time, is obviously enamored of Edna St. Vincent Millay. He urges that she be restored to the "canon",although her work has not been lauded in recent years.

The intense, highly emotional poet comes alive in the pages of his well-researched book. She comes to us as a rebel, determined to live on her own terms, to make love with the freedom of a man,to explore the ecstatic heights of feeling. (Shelley, the author tells us, was her idol.)

A central point that I feel Epstein misses is that, although she may have escaped the feminine role dictated by conventions of her time, she did not escape her own compulsion to make the search for love the driving force of her actions. Her poetry also has as its overriding theme, romantic and sexual love. For this reason she missed achieving stature as a great poet. Even though she possessed a great facility for language, her works are too limited in scope.

Her eventual descent into alcoholism and drug addiction can serve as a cautionary tale against the wild self-indulgence and perpetual adolescence that plagued Millay. It must be said, however, that her verbal gifts were so great that even in the midst of her addled despair in later life, she was able still to produce, although the work then was of lesser quality.

Kudoes for Epstein's carefully researched, comprehensive biography.

Comprehensive Survey of This Poet's Life
This biography was a fast and furious read, due to the great anecdotes as well as the tightly-written analysis. Ms. Millay's life was a whirlwind and many heretofore unknown facts and episodes are revealed, adding richness to the typical chronological description of this writer's life. Ms. Millay was more than a writer, she was a full-blown creative personality, in a time when to do so as a woman from a modest background was virtually unheard of. Even for those who do not know her poems or do not usually read literary biography, this book documents a fascinating woman's life and is well worth picking up.

Terrific reading
Daniel Mark Epstein brings a special understanding to Edna St Vincent Millay's biography by virtue of being a poet himself. I think that's why this book is in many ways superior to the Nancy Mitford book.

Edna St Vincent Millay was not only a great person of words, but a great seductress and everyone, male and female alike, fell under her spell. Apparently, accordingly to this book, she managed to live up to their expectations quite well. Mr Epstein matches the love poems to the folks they were written for and gives the details of the various affairs. It may not sound interesting, but it is quite interesting - especially since M's Millay seemed to have a weakness for men who were not quite as talented as she was. The background behind "Fatal Interview" and the story of her (apparently) one love she lost before_she_ was ready to is quite an interesting read by itself.

Mr Epstein focuses on M's Millay as sort of a self made goddess and how her various affairs shaped her writing. M's Mitford focuses on how M's Millay's relationship with her mother shaped her life. Both of these are very interesting and I'd advise reading them consecutively and draw your own conclusions. In some respects, I think Mr Epstein is correct in what he presumes, but the same can be said of M's Mitford.

Throw yourself into the words and life of Edna St Vincent Millay - you'll find yourself awash with her beautiful poetry and prose and this book will help you make sense out of it.

(Caribbean) basin full of personalities
Truth is stranger than fiction. Not always. When penned by Mark Kurlansky both are equally extraordinary. Not satisfied with being a Caribbean reporter for the Chicago Tribune, he became a successful non-fiction writer (COD and THE BASQUE HISTORY OF THE WORLD). Now, with THE WHITE MAN IN THE TREE, it's fiction and very obvious that he is equally at ease in the imagination, and also very much at home in the Caribbean.

THE WHITE MAN IN A TREE is a novella and collection of other witty - sometimes wickedly so - short stories; all about life in the Caribbean, principally Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and French Guiana. What makes the book so enjoyable - besides Kurlansky's easy prose and comfort with the vernacular - is how he tackles the sociologically complex and serious issues that arise in such a potent admixture of people, places and cultures. Miscegnation is frought with portents of political correctness; rather than being shied away, Mr Kurlansky uses it as the theme to explore the misunderstandings and mistakes that are the common denominator of the humanly rich and diverse Caribbean.

For anyone who has lived in the area the tales will ring true. The complexity of motives and resulting eccentricity of behaviour that seems so weird to visitors is perfectly captured and explained, with a locals' shrug of the shoulders by Mr Kurlansky. Underlying all is the constant rhythm of the Caribbean sense of humor, which Mr Kurlansky has in abundance and with which he writes with abandon.

Misunderstandings and misjudgements aside, a sense of play is the one thing in common in the Caribbean; a necessary ingredient for living there and required of anybody who wishes to understand the region.

Sail Away With Kurlansky
A friend gave me a copy of Mark Kurlansky's THE WHITE MAN IN THE TREE while I was planning a trip to the Caribbean. Get this book. It's guaranteed to double your travel pleasure wherever you go and whether or not you leave your armchair. You'll come away from Kurlansky's delicious romp knowing yourself and your world better. And that cast of characters! This book will remind you of Graham Greene. Kurlansky sees intently, like the visual artist he is, & forgets nothing, like the journalist he is. The combo makes for some wonderfully memorable writing.

A joyous read
I had approached Mark Kurlansky's White Man in a Tree, a book of short stories by a white Jewish man about non-whites in the Caribbean, cautiously if not with trepidation. Could a white man write appropriately about Caribbean culture? Could I read this book without feeling terribly uncomfortable? Could this journalist write engaging fiction? A fact that complicated things even further, and that should be revealed in all candor to readers of this review, is that Mark Kurlansky is married to my cousin. Being a fairly critical reader, I did not want to have to conceal either my dislike, boredom, or both, to my cousin and her husband. What a wonderful surprise! I finished White Man in about four days; reading it on the subway going to and from work, in the restroom, while lying in bed late into the night. In other words, I opened it up whenever I had a free moment. When I was finished, I wanted nothing else but to sit Mark down and cross-examine him about how he came to write each of the stories--in other words, to get the stories behind the stories. The stories are all engaging, educational, moving, and beautifully written. I sometimes felt they had qualities of Sholem Aleichem, sometimes Marquez. Each story takes place on a different island, and draws the reader in almost immediately. One of my favorites, The Unclean, is about a new rabbi in a Caribbean Jewish community who discovers that even the seemingly most observant members of his congregation are oblivious to Jewish dietary laws and eat shellfish with impunity. As a result, the rabbi engages the non-Jewish islanders in his quest to bring kosher meat to his congregation. In sum, I loved this book and have been recommending it to everyone I know.

A fun look at the space shuttle
I commend the person whose idea it was to come up with this book. It provides an overview of the space shuttle's systems as well as some of the tasks of the crew.

I enjoyed the book's fold out pages of the space shuttle control panels. The launch checklist and systems schematics were of particular interest for me as well.

While it's fun to look at every once and awhile, I would have liked more detail on the space shuttle systems. Also, while the book offers some explanations regarding individuals steps in the launch sequence, I would have liked more information on each step. I think the title, "The Space Shuttle Operator's Manual," is a tad bit ambitious since it's such a cursory look at the space shuttle. Nevertheless, I still consider it educational.

Overall, I think those whoare interested in the space shuttle will get something out of this book.

A handy reference for mission simulations at Space Camp.
Recommended reading for space cadets of all ages. Study up! The information packed in this manual will come in handy for those nerve-racking mission simulations at Space Camp/Space Academy.

Especially good are the pull-out schematics of the orbiter's control panels.

And the diagram of the improved field joint on the SRBs is helpful in understanding the Challenger accident. Although it would be more helpful if they also showed the original joint construction.

The Perfect Shuttle Reference
This book is the best overview and reference manual on the shuttle. As you can see from the "Look Inside" function, and by the index, it covers the whole nine yards. It focuses specifically on the orbiter, and covers all aspects of shuttle missions from launch to landing.

As an aspiring sci-fi writer, I found this book to be the perfect reference. It has raw statistics, such as orbiter length, cargo bay volume, and it even goes over the meals and menus and how they are prepared. It also goes in to the history of the orbiters, and the names of the ever shrinking shuttle fleet.

Several sections deal with the now-defunct Spacelab modules. The Spacelab was the shuttle equivalent of a camper shell that sat in the cargo bay. It turned the shuttle into a mini space-station, and had several interchangeable modules. One section was a pressurized module with a battery of experiments, which was connected to the shuttle cockpit. Other sections included a multi-use pallet, and an experimental pallet. This Spacelab was retired in 1997, and has been replaced by the Spacehab modules, which was on the Columbia when it broke-up over Texas.

This book is written in the normal "Basic English" of instruction manuals, and can be understood by elementary school children. It also has many diagrams and pictures, which save many thousands of words of descriptions.

By the way, this book does explain how the space lavatory. In case you are curious, it is a normal commode with vacuum suction, although I have heard stories that it can smell at times.

This book's one weakness is that it is a bit impersonal. If you want to know about the emotions and reactions to life in spaces, another book may be better, such as Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff," of Homer Hickam's "Back to the Moon.". As you read this book, you must supply your own excitement and emotion to this book, since it is an operator's manual. It reads a bit like an encyclopedia, or dictionary, and not a novel.

After reading and referencing this book, I felt as if I had been on board!

Storyboards: Motion in Art
Published in Paperback by Nomis Creations (December, 1994)
Authors: Mark Simon and Jeanne P. Simon
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $16.00
Average review score:

A terrific resource
This is by far the best (of the very few) books on storyboarding available. It is clear, concise, has plenty of illustrations, and even addresses the business side of storyboarding for movies, television, and commercials. It also gets at the heart of the matter, which is: the storyboard artist is often a film project's first (uncredited) director by sketching set pieces, camera shots, and plugging plot holes. Highly recommended.

An Excellent Text.
The experience and practical wisdom that Mark Simon shares with his reader is what makes this book special. He offers an exceptional understanding of what is needed to start a career in animation and storyboarding. He then continues by presenting an overview of his own patterns for entertainment industry success that are relevant in nearly any career field.

In addition to his own ideas, I especially enjoy the sharp contrasts he draws by comparing how his colleagues would handle similar projects. This is an amazing chapter that I often re-read to keep my own thought process open.

I do teach a program in animation, and we do use Mark's book in our classroom. It has been a valuable part of our curriculum. On occasion we have even invited Mark to present chapters to our classes and are never disappointed.

Good explanation of the bigger picture
This book addresses several subjects that are all relevant to individuals who want to make a living from, or involving, storyboards. It is fully illustrated by a variety of artists, a feature that is important for up-and-coming artists to have exposure to. There are many diverse styles of illustration out there, but successful storyboard artists all share an awareness of certain principles of filmmaking, that this book also covers. By virtue of its many explanations and illustrations, it presents a broad and clear description of the business of storyboarding. People who want to pursue this field need to know that being able to draw is not the exclusive interest of a production artist, but also cinematic conventions and marketing of their product. I recommend this book to my students who express interest in the field, and for further exploration of specific concentrations I suggest "Directing: Shot by Shot" by Katz, and "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" by Stan Lee.

Mostly Disappointing
I loved Jarman's previous book, "Questions for Ecclesiastes," so I was looking forward to this one. Although many people seem to be wildly impressed by the fact that Jarman is writing sonnets, it seemed to me that the form often detracted from the work, rather than adding to it. Forced rhymes and stilted rhythms ruined more than one of these sonnets for me, and the relatively abbreviated form often seemed to cut short complex thoughts and ideas before Jarman had any real chance to explore them. The poems that work best for me are the longer ones, usually composed of multiple stanzas in sonnet form. Here, given enough space to let his thoughts breathe, Jarman not only has more to say, he also handles the form itself much more fluidly and flexibly. "The Word 'Answer'" and "The World" are the long poems at the beginning and end of the book, and both are superb reflections on one's relationship to God and to grace. The final sestet of "The Word 'Answer'" shows what Jarman is capable of when he doesn't get too caught up in the form:

God, I am thinking of you now as snow,
Descending like the answer to a prayer,
This prayer that you will be made visible,
Drifting and deepening, a dazzling, slow
Acknowledgment, out of the freezing air,
As dangerous as it is beautiful.

The rhymes are there, but they don't get in the way of the imagery, and the image here picks up on the previous imagery and language and thoughts of this poem. What's good in this book is enough to make it worthwhile, but don't expect every page to take your breath away.

Unholy and Holy
Paradoxically, "Unholy Sonnets" are at once Christian-based relgious poems that challenge conventional christianity. A gifted poet, Jarman balances the hum-drum and the monotony of every-day life against the transcendence of Christianity. These poems present the paradoxes of Christianity also, the least of which being how one can both worship Jesus Christ and cast him in human form.

The sonnet form is perfectly suited for this investigation, as it, like conventional Christianity, is bound by rules and conventions. Jarman, however, moves fluidly in the framework of the sonnet form, railing against at times and settling into it comfortable at other times.

"Unholy Sonnets" bypasses "Questions for Ecclesiastes" by leaps and bounds. Those who miss the beauty of these poems simply don't know how to read poetry. There are no forced rhymes here. There are no forced themes here. These poems break with the standard workshop-model tripe that pollutes today's literary magazines. Mark Jarman may very well be this century's answer to George Herbert or John Donne.

Poems that can save lives
Spiritually powerful poems that are so timely and unforgettable! Mark Jarman us a lyric genius and a great storyteller. His meditations reflect and enrich my own struggles with the meaning of God and life. This and his previous, award-winning collection, QUESTIONS FOR ECCLESIASTES, contain some of the most important poetry written in our lifetime. A must read, over and over again.

Better than I expected
In knowing Mr.Delaney (I go to the high school where he teaches), I decided to read his books. I was oddly suprised at what I read. Whoever knew that the same guy who plays the guitar and sings John Denver songs could be such a good writer! I was suprised at how the story never got too "dry". Mr.Delaney, Kudos. Keep up the good work!

Review of the Chip
This is the first story of the Misfits Inc. A computer chip had disappeared in front of people's eyes. Peter, Byte, Mattie, and Jake investigate in order to save Mattie's proud grandpa.

It's a pretty good book expect that it didn't have much supense. It kinda tells you who stole the chip and all you gotta find out is how.

Queen's Gambit
The book is really fun. This group of high school misfits goes on a couple exciting adventures. To find out the real thief of the new multimillion dollar computer chip. You will have to find out if they survive their life-threating explorations. This book is a five star read.

You'll Laugh, You'll Cry...You'll poke someone in the Eye
This book cracked me up. I read this in one sitting, and nearly fell off the couch, laughing. The "poetry" is absolutely atrocious, but the book is so funny the "poetic" curses are forgivable. I bought this kit as a joke, and found the helpful booklet to be amazing Stress Therapy.

I didn't really need to poke anyone in the eye--the book relieves your stress with humorous scenarios of revenge, listed in a convenient format which enables quick-reference for various situations that may arise. Feeling Stressed? Yeah, me too.

The author conveniently provides instructions for making your own "Voodoo" doll--however, I suggest purchasing the Kit, instead: ISBN 1402700512 ( "The Voodoo Revenge Book & Gift Set" )--have it delivered to your work address, for added effect.

go get em
i went to the website at voodoorevenge.com and left a few ideas for the next book. that's a really good idea for a book to ask its readers for input. gets my vote for a great book.
