Educational Policy for the Pluralist Democracy: The Common School, Choice and Diversity
Published in Library Binding by RoutledgeFalmer (01 October, 1992)
Author: Mark Holmes
Amazon base price: $85.00
Average review score:

One of the Best Education Books I Have Ever Read
A few years ago, one of America's leading scholars on education issues and author of many outstanding books on education, Professor Diane Ravitch, recommended that I read this book by Professor Mark Holmes. I read it several times two winters ago, and have been recommending the book ever since, as it is a book full of golden nuggets of wisdom. Holmes explains why school choice is the critical education reform of the 21st century. A theme that is woven throughout the book is Holmes's differentiation of "low doctrine" versus "high doctrine" schools. This is an extremely important topic that is rarely discussed in either popular education articles written for laity or in educational research. Professor Holmes wrote this book in the early 1990's, yet his ideas are so fresh and futuristic and innovative that his book will be as appropriate to read decades in the future as it is today. I issue one disclaimer: Be aware beforehand that Holmes may influence you to change your position on many education issues. I strongly encourage education leaders and policy makers who are open-minded and willing to be intellectually persuaded to read this book. Parents and citizens who have a critical interest in education will learn much from reading this book as well.

Edward Lear's Nonsense

No Nonsense
Though Wines is renowned for architecture, his illustrations for Lear are emphatic of his talents as an artist; these are a combination of the beautiful line and sensuous watercolor qualities of Arthur Rackham crossed with the avant-garde and perverse sensibilities of Edward Gorey. An intriguing perspective on the poems of Edward Lear. Lear himself must have applauded if he'd had the chance. Provocative for adults, yet children will be tickled by it. Nice gift book. The title makes it suitable for all sorts of occasions.

Kids will like to look at this one up close!
This book has neat step-cut pages that get bigger as the pyramid grows. There is simple text explaining the process of pyramid building for young children, as well as additional facts and information for older or more experienced children. I am taking my kindergarten class on a field trip to an Egyptian exhibit, and this will be a good book to introduce them to the pyramids.. we may even make our own! I was surprised when I received the book -- it is a hardcover with sturdy pages!

The Best of Its Kind
I was practically inseperable with this book for weeks after I first got it. Well-written and exhaustively in-depth look at every aspect of the four ex-Beatles solo careers. This has all the info you could ever want on solo albums, tours, TV appearances, bootlegs, etc. The only drawback is that I got so into it I was forced to buy all the solo records I hadn't already owned!

Should be Eight Stars for Eden
One of the great unknown classics of science fiction, this novel begins with a minor problem. Contact is lost with a colony. A brilliant man which may be best described as a sort of super social scientist, though young, is sent to solve the problem. It turns out to be larger than expected, of course, with all technology and artifacts being destroyed and the minds of the colonists controlled. It turns out to be that the . . . Oh that's right, I'm not allowed to say. His originality wins out in the end with some surprizing benefits. Well, I found it very satisfying as a story when I first read it a long time ago. I still read it every couple of years.

In my not so humble opinion it is truly a great sf classic, the original from which many other stories have been um researched/derived/filched from. Written better than the previous sentence, you will find it way too short, and very enlightening.

A real Master
It is said that an image is more than a thousand words. Althought I don't think it is exact, it is what I have to say about this excellent book. Not only the quality of the images (those like the "Embrace" series, the ones about Mishima, some of the "Man and Woman" series), but the text indeed, makes this book a must for those who search the spirit behind the photographs, and who think that photography is much more than only a matter of "being in the right place at the right time".

Creativy at its maximux display.

One night when I whent to sleep I pray to my guardian angel to let me have a full night's rest and to take care of me all night.

My surprise was not just that I had sleep all night but when I open my eyes, I saw my guardian angel by my left side of my bed.

ever since then I thank the lord. for having his blessing everyday.

Wonderful Photojournalism
I would recommend this book to anyone who is moved by high quality documentary black and white photogaphy. Or anyone who is interested in the culture of El Salvador. As a photography student, I know how many thousands of exposures it takes to get one image that has a truly unique perspective and contains real power. This book has many images that would be the "photo of a lifetime" for most people I know.

It was very moving. Larry Towell does real honor to the word "photojournalist" with this collection of work. I would love to own a print from one of his negatives someday.
