A More Than Adaquate Introduction
Unlike so many books on the Japanese Colonial Empire which tend to be quite narrow on their focus, this compulation covers the entire empire, formal and informal. Also to its credit, the essays inside are a good mixture of specifically focused and more broadly outlined writings. Overall it is a good buy for any level, from those just beginning to learn colonial history to those much more well versed.

the joy of sharing
I found the title alone to be a reason to buy this book. I have been an elementary school teacher for 4 year, and I know that sharing is difficult for children. Dana Webb's book is an excellent book for reinforcing this character quality. Jared finds out that there are lots of ways to be a help to others rather than "doing his own thing," with the string that he was given. The main character is joyful as he does various helpful things for people using his string. I think that children will enjoy this book over and over because of its simple message and for the fun illustrations. Some children will go out immediatly looking for ways to share with others as Jared did.

Jazz insights
Say the word jazz and many immediately shy away, jazz is "that other music. " Nothing could be further from the truth as jazz is a vital art form that continues to evolve and is Americas's music. In this fantastic little book some of the greatest musicians that have created or advanced this musical art form to it's current level are either discussed or interviewed. The heavyweights interviewed are the fine and diverse in style saxophonists Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter and Ornette Coleman. Included are an interesting and funny interview with Wyton Marsalis and Herbie Hancock that reveals the differences that muscial interpretations of the purist and the fusion player can be on the same page in many regards. Also a nice chat with trumpeter extraordinaire Dizzy Gillespie with his marvelous puffed out cheeks and several other notable greats. Also there are personality based discussions on John Coltrane, where the giants of jazz give their recollections and impressions of Coltrane and others. The others who are treated in this book with discussion are the late great Miles Davis , Chet Baker, Charlie haden, Lester Bowie and Tony Williams. Of particular interest is an essay by musican /artist Joni Mitchel as she wrties about one of the greatest bass players whose flame burned out much too quickly, Jaco . Besides these musicians it is unlikely and inevitable to not have a discussion of jazz without mentioning the forefathers including Armstrong and "Bird." The interviews are excellent insights into the minds of those that create the music, the reasons, the feelings, the inspiration. Taken from the magazine "The Jazz Musician" this short book is long on information about the lives of the greats of jazz. This book is especially handy since it can be read without going in order of presentation, but at will as one chooses. Recommended for jazz buffs of all ages.

Great Background Material for "The Authority"
This volume is a collection of issues from a comic book miniseries that details some of the background of Jenny Sparks, founder of the superhero group The Authority, and how she recruited its original members. It is not necessary to have read any of the issues from the core series itself (or from its predecessor, Stormwatch), but it is certainly helpful. The first few issues of The Authority are collected in the volumes "Under New Management" and "Relentless".

In any case, the individual tales show Jenny Sparks, who wields the power of electricity, encountering certain critical superheroes (Apollo, the Midnighter, the Engineer, and so forth) and convincing them in her unique way to join her group. Because the ageless Ms. Sparks is the literal Spirit of the 20th Century, she was born on January 1 of 1900 and knows she will die at the approach of the new millenium. Her long lifespan and her key role in world history means that she has been present at practically every critical event over the past few decades and that she wields enormous power in the secret government of the world. (She arranges the election defeat of Gerald Ford because she's angered at the Nixon pardon and makes sure that Reagan "will be taken care of".)

There's a whole hidden history of which we, the plebeian masses, remain unaware, complete with thwarted alien invasions, secret bases, and contacts with parallel worlds, such as Sliding Albion. Thankfully, swashbuckling heroes such as Hemingway and Einstein are around to pitch in to help the lusty Ms. Sparks.

This is a glorious full-color world that's chock full of gadgets, byzantine plots, improbable encounters, thoroughly evil villains, buckets of blood, cigarettes, whisky, and sex. The tales span several decades, and include an encounter with the occult-obsessed Nazis (and a shoutout to a certain Indiana Jones) and a time-travelling sentient city from the future that's come back to our era to destroy humanity for religious reasons.

The irreverent and sloppily-dressed Ms. Sparks hates practically all governments, and since the secret cabals that rule the world are in some cases shown to engage in human sacrifice, it's easy to see why. Primarily, she's out to have a good time, and to kick a lot of butt.

Good stories and great fun, and excellent artwork. A must-have for those who enjoy The Authority or Planetary!

White Martians return
After reading the two previous JLA story arcs from Mark Waid, which proceed this one, ("Tower of Babel" and "Divided We Fall"), I decided to pick up "Terror Incognita". I really enjoyed Mark Waids writing in "Tower" and "Divided", and although I feel that "Terror Incognita" slips a notch when compared to "Tower" and "Divided", it is still a solid book. Without giving too much of the story away, this run of the JLA is about the return of the White Martians who the JLA had faced earlier and defeated, The White Martians have induced toxins in the earths air which change the oxygen levels in the atmoshpere thereby making combustion impossible, in other words, no fire, which is a martians only weekness. They then create a plan to use all the pychics on earth to improve their mental abilities and control the universe without ever having to leave the earth which they have made fireproof. It feels like your basic "Alien Invasion" type of story, but there is so much more to it than that, also it was great to see Mark include "The Phantom Zone" and Krypto the superdog in his story. all in all a good read, but not quite as good as the superior "Tower of Babel" and "Divided We Fall". Definitely worth the money.

Battles for Chickamauga and Chattanooga
Civil War Regiments appears to be the only true refereed academic journal (quarterly) for the booming Civil War market. It was quite refreshing to see such a detailed examination of a western theater campaign. The marketability of eastern campaign themes and marquee battles such as Gettysburg is disportionately high. True scholars of the Civil War appreciate the significance of the western campaigns and the preponderance of so many myths created during the biased postwar period that have in themselves become a source for many flawed 20th century publications. This particular issue of Civil War Regiments finally does justice to one the wars almost forgotten and usually misrepresented units, the Regular Brigade of the Army of the Cumberland. Anyone who has ever been affliated with the army or the military will appreciate the complete and objective treatment given to the Regular Brigade at Chickamauga by Major Mark Johnson. At last the Regulars have been revealed for what they were. A standard of discpline and dedication that was proven repeatedly in all of the major western campaigns. A legacy that continues today in the modern army.

A Great Read
As a student of tourism planning, I found this book very thought-provoking and informative. The story is very interesting. As I worked my way through a grabbing murder mystery, I was being taught all about tourism development issues in a small community. An ingenious concept delivered beautifully. I highly recommend this book.
