Touching insight into the people who are our "angels"
This is a lovely story of the "angels" that walk among us: be they teachers, firefighters, our neighbors, our mothers... When you think you need some strength, these are the people who come through for us -- our support and inspiration. It is a great story for children, but also is a wonderful gift for your "angel." I keep giving my book away....

Captivating story and illustrations!
This book, beautifully illustrated and written in poetic form is a keeper and a wonderful gift to kids. It is a simple tale of how important we are to one another and how we all have "angels" watching over us whether or not we can really "see" them. In fact they are in smiles, and in nature and in the good things in life. This book so captivated my daughter-in-law that she distributed hundreds of them to the families of the firefighters, the police and the rescue personnel families who lost their father/mother in the Sept 11 tragedy. A mother of two herself, she and her family and friends deliverd these books to the firestations in early December for distribution. Each book was dedicated to the family and signed personally by the people who gave the donation for the book. This was a deed done out of love and this is what this book is about. A great baby present- and a keeper for your child. I am a grandmother- and I recommend this to all you. ENjoy and read with your grandchild!

Best of 2000!
This book has a wonderful story, but its illustrations are simply spactacular! What beautiful drawings to bring this book to life! I love reading the story of watching out for others to my chilren, but I really love admiring thesegorgous pages of artwork!

Everything you need to have fun...(and learn, too)
This is a great book, chock-a-block w/ very accessible experiments. One of the best features is the way the experiments are grouped together: a 'theme' (say, Acids, in the Chemistry section) will have a group of experiments of varying degrees of complexity that together add up to a pretty good understanding of the concept. Also, most of the materials are readily at hand- for many of them we really did already have everything in the house. This is esp. gratifying for the kids, who of course want to do the experiment *right now*. I would imagine that home-schooling families would enjoy this, but our school-going kids enjoy doing these experiments after school & on weekends.

p.s., one of the easiest experiments is also a real showstopper, though it takes a couple of days to complete: dissolving the eggshell of an egg, leaving the egg inside intact!

Great Resource for Parents!
I wish I had this book 15 years ago as we spent time at home playing "Mad Scientist" with our young children. Our kids are now all teenagers and have enjoyed exploring Robinson's book.
Children LOVE to experiment with their world. "The Everything Kids' Science Experiments Book" offers parents and kids alike a wide array of adventures in science including: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, and the Human Body. This book is oriented to kids ages 7-12 but offers information and exploration for budding scientists of all ages. I appreciate this book's easy entrance into the world of science and the three levels of experiments for each area of science: 1)Simple Home Experiments; 2)More Detailed "Kid's Lab Lessons"; 3)Science Fair Projects. The art layout (including multi-color printing, fun-graphics, puzzles, and side-bars), the splashy presentation of information (including fun facts, words to know, dumb-jokes, online science websites and cool quotes) and a complete index make this book an excellent resource for parents, homeschoolers and science teachers. For two other parenting resources, look into "The Family Cloister" and "The Christian Family Toolbox", both by David Robinson (...)

Science fun for kids of all ages!
Wow, what a great book! My kids love it. It is set up as a series of activities that begin with a question followed by an experiment that answers the question. Questions such as "How do you peel a raw egg?", "Does air take up space?" and "Why can't I taste medicine when I plug my nose?" are all examples of questions posed in the book. The fun is in the experiment that answers the question. I think I counted something like 30 different experiments from 5 main science areas (biology, chemistry, physics, planet earth, and the human body). Following each area is a "science fair project" for the kids to use at the next science fair at school! What a great resource it will be for our family in the years to come. All in all a great book at a great price.

Jam packed with important ideas
This might be the most valuable book I have on my shelf.
Six selected pages from each of 64 classic authors. Fantastic!
The book is divided into 10 sections,
each with an introduction by the editor, Mark Ridley.
Very helpful!
There is no way a book like this can be summarized.
It would be like trying to summarize a textbook.
The table of contents tells the story best.

Odd that an author would publish two very different books with identical titles.
I write here of the one that is the Oxford Reader.

priceless source for prompting thought
Most of us who have a professional or casual interest in evolution and the natural world gain our knowledge from popular articles, books and perhaps the dim recesses of our undergraduate textbook memory. While Dawkins' _The Selfish Gene_ or _Darwin's Dangerous Idea_ by Dennet may lay out the bones and flesh of our modern view of the natural world with wonderous analogies and often beautiful prose it's not until opening this volume that what's missing will be noticed: a sense of history, of excitement, of challenging thought.

Evolution (and its sub-branches) have been controversial, not just on religious terms (the less said about that the better) but in the normal manner of grand scientific theories attempting to explain the world in which we live. The importance of claims, counter-claims and paradigm shifts are hard to grasp without having been present, if not in person then intellecutally. _This_, with joy and a very sensitive editor's pen, is what Mark Ridly (author of the popular undergraduate text _Evolution_) has managed to give us with his selection of seminal papers in the history of evolutionary thought.

The articles, ranging from Darwin through to the present day) are superbly chosen and in many cases hard for students or professionals (let along lay readers) to obtain. An absence of maths from even the most statistical of papers (which still remain cogent) will be welcomed by those not up for weeks of scribbling.

The papers themselves are clear and thoughtful, their importance is always obvious and, through their arrangement, lead the reader on a merry intellectual dance of claim, counter-claim and converging streams of thought.

Reading this book is an intellectual adventure; no summaries of events long past, the papers (and the accompanying short essays by Ridley) give a sense of the issues, how thoughtful the responses and creative the science.

In short - this book make me re-think about what and how we know about evolution. It stimulated my research. Higher praise I cannot give.

May there be many more in this wonderful series.

Exchanging Our Country Marks: The Transformation of African Identities in the Colonial and Antebellum South
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (April, 1998)
Author: Michael Angelo Gomez
Amazon base price: $55.00
Used price: $47.65

A must read
A superb book that is a "must read" for every African African American man, woman and child. This book is the stuff of seminars, workshops and discussion groups at all levels. One of the fascinating positions exposed by Gomez was why it took the diverse ethnic Africans to achieve an African American consciousness. The depth of documentation was monumental. I always wondered why the color "red" had such significance in the African American "red clawt" tales. Gomez' book inspired me to research this aspect of African American tales. Thank you Mr. Gomez!

This work is a must read!
Gomez has done a tremendous service to the study of Africana by giving tangible evidence to what have heretofore been the answers rather than the questions on the who, what, where, when and WHY's of the African slave in America. Readers will be surprised at the degree to which something other than fact has helped form the base of their "knowledge". Suddenly the image of tobacco or rice will gain greater resonance than cotton. Virginia and Senegambia, for example, will have new and sharper meanings as we better ferret out who we were as Ghanaians, Senegambians, Angolans, etc. and how we became who we are as African-Americans.

An innovative and essential book in African Diaspora studies
Prof. Gomez has used a wealth of sources, many of which have been underutilized or neglected, to write a rich and nuanced meditation on the evolution of identity among Africans and their progeny in North America. His use of folklore points the way for new research in a field that oddly fails much too often to consider the voices of people of African descent. Every student at every level with interests in African-American studies or African Diaspora Studies must know this work.

A must read for anyone venturing into Web Services!
Given the wide spread industry hype surrounding Web Services, and the appearance that every software vendor has their own definition and perspective on what really constitutes a Web Service, what do you get - A whole heap of confusion!!

In tackling this confusion "Executive's Guide to Web Services," does a great job of explaining what Web Services are, and separating the business realities from the overblown hype. As such this book is recommended reading for anyone who is looking for a foundation upon which to really understand this emerging subject space.

In this book Marks and Werrell discuss:

- What differentiates Web Services from previous IT trends
- The concepts and standards that make Web Services possible
- The rational for using Web Services to increase organizational flexibility and agility
- Current and future business scenarios for reducing costs and increasing revenues
- How and where to begin using Web Services (as well as where not!)
- Predominant software vendors in the Web Services space, and their market positions

Overall the book avoids technical discussions, favoring a business centric perspective, from which strategic and tactical business considerations are examined. If you are looking for a guide on how to code your first Web Services program, this is not the book for you, this topics is left to the numerous implementation books already out there.

In this book you will find a solid Web Services foundation that will arm you with a good perspective on what Web Services are, as well as where and when to use them today. You will also gain the knowledge and understanding necessary to discern Web Services reality from hype - do not underestimate how valuable this knowledge is for early forays into implementation of Web Services!

Great job explaining Web Services
"Executive's Guide to Web Services" starts out by providing real world examples of how and where Web services are being used today (e.g. Dunn & Bradstreet, Dell etc). These examples are used as a backdrop from which Web services concepts are introduced. Chapter 2, "Standards, Concepts and Terminology" is without doubt the most readable and comprehensive Web services primer that I've yet to find - it's worth buying the book for this chapter alone!

CONTENT:
Using chapter 2 as a foundation, later chapters further explore what Web services are, and what they can (and can't) do for businesses. Key topics covered include:
o Web Service Adoption - Looks at the hype surrounding Web services and outlines what's really achievable today. Also, details what the authors refer to as the "Web services Adoption Lifecycle," which maps the likely adoption and business usage of Web services over the next 3-5 years.
o Where to Begin - A step by step analysis of how, where, and when to use Web services for your business.
o Strategic/Vertical Market Implications - The medium to long terms strategic implications of Web services adoption.
o Architecting for Competitive Advantage - A conceptual discussion of how Web services can be used to create a more agile and flexible infrastructure, which is more adaptive to the fluidity of today's market dynamics.

CONCLUSIONS:
Overall, "Executive's Guide to Web Services" does a great job of explaining what Web services are, where and when to use them, and how they can be used to improve internal and inter-company operating efficiencies. The book covers each topic comprehensively, and does a good job of explaining complex concepts in a plain, easy to understand language.
Whether you are only just beginning to look into Web services, or you want to gain additional insights into how your business should look to use Web services, "Executive's Guide to Web Services" will be a good choice.

Good Choice - Highly Recommended.

Excellent Business/Management Primer on Web Services
An excellent book for any business or IT executive that really needs to understand the concepts and implications of Web services. For those who need to appreciate how this technology will impact their business environment and strategic direction, but are not about to sit down and start writing the code!

This book takes the reader from first principles, laying a foundation upon which the implications and potential of Web services can be fully understood. Early chapters introduce and explain Web services basics as well as introducing a model for how they will be adopted over the coming 3-5 years. Later chapters look at the strategic and vertical market implications of Web services, before moving on to the more tactical question of how and where to begin their implementation.

Throughout the book the authors maintain a vendor neutral perspective, which is particularly helpful when they introduce and discuss the primary software vendors (BEA, IBM, Microsoft etc) wrestling for dominance in the Web services market. The book covers all the bases and should be required reading for managers and executives wanting to learn about Web services.

I give this book a 5/5 for those who want - or perhaps need - to understand Web services and anticipate their impact on business and IT operations. Overall a great Web services primer.

Existential Hypnotherapy

Fantastic
This book is so full of common sense wisdom that you may wonder why you haven't heard it all before. Yet the approach is unique, especially on dealing with addictions. Also, the use of client generated metaphors and imbedded suggestions is very well explained and interesting. I probably have enjoyed this book as much as any on hypnosis. Very enlightening!

Interesting
The chapter on addiction was unique. The approach taken about the addiction fad was different than other books I have read on the subject. While the book covers a wide range of hypnotherapy topics, including a very good chapter on metaphors as client controlled, the chapter on addictions alone would have made the book worthwile. It is a must read, and was a pleasant surprise to me-much more than I expected!

sophisticated, philo- and psychologically based viewpoint
A good treatise to help understand the very bases of hypno- therapeutic possibilities to help the patients. More a mature way of unserstanding than an elementary book for learning.

Highly unusual theological fantasy
This sequel to Zorachus, set three hundred years later, is a gripping, violent fantasy whodunnit, highlighting the author's knowledge of philosophy and theology---as a series of grisly murders rocks their order, three Sharajnaghi wizards are dispatched to investigate one Essaj-Ben-Yussef, who just might be the Messiah. First-rate.

The Expected One
I am a professional writer, and a big fan of Mark Rogers' work. I can't say enough about the quality of the writing in this book. It is a crime that it, indeed all his works, are not better known. If you like to read, period, pick up this novel.

Well thought out trilogy
With so much plug-n-chug cranking out of fantasy trilogies, its hard to be interesting and original. Mark's reputation is for his hilarious Samaraui Cat books, but here he puts out a very good serious work with some quite nice twists and turns. Credit goes to Mark for his excellent storytelling skills. This is one of those books that you'll want to have two copies of: one to loan to friends and one to keep for yourself.

I couldn't put it down
I read this book in 24 hours. This is a fascinating book about the possible nature and purpose of UFOs and aliens. A good mix of science and biblical accounts and explainations makes this an important addition to your library. It will hold your attention throughout. I highly recommend it.

A very informative book about ET from a Christian viewpoint
Hitchcock provides a very informative look at the phenomenon of ET visits to Earth and gives a clear view of who ET really is. Extensive attention is paid to Biblical references and a logical approach is used to state that ET is a threat and is demonic in nature. Numerous references were used to make a scientific subject very clear to an asthetic Bible student like myself. Very easy to comprehend and a fascinating read. Worth reading and should be a must for everyone!

finally a biblical answer to what these u.f.o.'s are.
this is a great book...finally someone uses the bible to explain what these unidentified flying objects are. the author also gives a chilling detailed account of understanding revelation 9. these aliens from outer space are not our friends. a must read..

Do not miss this wonderful book!
The Eye of the Elephant is a wonderful, adventurous journey into the heart and soul of Africa seen through Mark and Delia's eyes. From the very first page you are caught up in their heroic quests to protect the animals they are there to observe. In spite of the unbelievable odds against them, they persevered and put the safety and security of the highly endangered animals FIRST. The elephants in the Luanga Valley are very fortunate to have had Mark and Delia watch over them and be their heroes. I have loved Africa and the African elephant my entire life and I am so grateful for these two selfless, dedicated people who have become the protectors of our most precious wildlife. This is one of my most treasured African stories.

This Book Was Amazing
You will immediately be drawn into their story! I was so involved reading this book that I missed my train station stop...you'll feel like you're there with them!

Best book I've read all year
A second story of the Owens's exceptional experiences in the wildlife habitats of Africa.(The first book is Cry of the Kalahari.) The Eye of the Elephant is a warm and personal story of saving the endangered elephants of Zambia. The reader becomes as anxious for the survival of the Owens's as for the survival of the elephants, and the people of Africa. Eye opening to the problems encountered in doing something so nobel and obviously necessary.

The Face of the Tiger
Published in Paperback by Stockade Books (01 November, 2002)
Author: Mark Steyn
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Steyn's the Daddy
He's the Daddy. He speaks the truth. Just read it

An underappreciated talent
The Face of the Tiger proves just how underappreciated columnist Mark Steyn really is. One part William F. Buckley Jr. (without the grandiose language) and one part P.J. O'Rourke (without the sarcasm), Steyn takes the best of both men by being a both a humourist and insightful. Yet despite that he's not as well known as either man, something that The Face of the Tiger will hopefully begin to remedy. The book collects his columns from September 11, 2001 to precisely one year later and primarily deals with the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. You can find him in the pages of The National Post and The Jerusalem Post as well as several other newspapers...

mark of excellence
he tosses off verbal zingers with the very best, offering pungent commentary with satirical jabs. i consider him a more erudite version of p.j. o'rourke--and not as mercilessly cynical. i often find myself laughing out loud reading steyn--my brother in england would often email his u.k. columns. but it's not sophomoric humor that engages steyn's wit; he's high-brow the entire way. it would be okay to label him an iconoclast simply because his take is often in opposition to conventional opinion and what passes for wisdom. steyn puts to shame all the muttering pundits who perform combat duty at the major mags and newspapers. perhaps frank rich is in his league, but i wouldn't trade steyn for the top draft pick, ever.
