Lots of value for the money
When I bought this book, I wasn't quite sure it would be all that useful to me. Once I got into it, I discovered how good it was.

I didn't find the first two chapters particularly useful, but from the third onwards it was simply enlightening. Reading chapter 3 I finally understood what Cross Site Scripting attacks were, and made clear how important it is to know stuff (HTTP in particular) in if you are serious about security (and about system administration in general).

The chapter about configuring Apache in Jail was great, and so it was the chapter about mod_rewrite . In general, the whole book was fantastic, and explained so much about security and Apache. In general, I didn't think there was so much to know about security and Apache, until reading this book that showed them to me so clearly.

I would have liked more depth in some of the chapters (like "Logging", that is very interesting but probably not detailed enough), but overall this book was a great buy.

A colleague of mine is a very experienced system administrator and said that you would find out about all that stuff slowly, working and looking up stuff quite a lot. I found that this book put my on a different level, closer to a senior system administrator.

Good buy!

Informations about the book.
Does Judaism have denominations similar to those found in Christianity? The answer to this perplexing question could clarify many enigmas for the students of Judaism, be they Jewish or Gentile. Marc Lee Raphael, a Reform rabbi and currently Professor of History and Director of the Melton Center for Jewish Studies at Ohio State University, provides insight into the labyrinth of American Judaism through his study of the Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, and Reconstructionist traditions. To a certain extent, the gamut of Jewish beliefs and practices ranging from the non-Zionist, separatist Satmar Hasidim on the right to the agnostic, Polydox Reformers on the left rivals the polarity within Christianity. But, on the other hand, there is a certain spirit of communality among the majority of Jews encompassing support for Israel and a fear of anti-Semitism which suggests that unity rather than sectarianism is a characteristic of Judaism. Utilizing a variety of primary sources, the author traces the evolution of the various movements in Judaism from their European antecedents through their latest developments in America, analyzing ideologies, institutions, and personalities. Progress in Motor Control, Volume One: Bernstein's Traditions in Movement Studies
Published in Hardcover by Human Kinetics Pub (15 April, 1998)
Author: Mark L. Latash
Amazon base price: $54.00

insights useful for robotics
The book's articles (chapters) describe models of nature's way of controlling motion. The models are built in the tradition of Bernstein, which means that they assume that the motion phenomena under cosideration are aimed at solving a certain problem based on a model of the future. The model of the future exists in the brain of the person/animal performing the motion. This approach is different from the theory of reflexes. In reflex theory everything that happens now has a cause in the past, and this completely expains motor activity. The Bernstein-inspired approach proposes that motor activity is performed with some outcome in mind - the human or animal has a model of desired future according to which the actions are taken.

A concise history of the rise of statistics in medicine
As a biomedical researcher and clinician, I rely on published literature to guide my practice and thought. Current medical literature is very statistically based. Consequently, I found the author's history of the rise of satistics in medicine fascinating. I can't recall seeing this material covered elsewhere. Further, this book is very thoroughly researched and anotated. The most important thing I learned from this book is that the much touted randomized clinical trial is a very recent invention.

Lives up to its title - best practices and sound approach
This is a completely updated book that departs from the earlier "Software Engineering Project Management" by Thayer (1997) in that it's more anchored in software engineering standards than in project management. To be sure, this book is about project management, but takes a more holistic view.

The best practices, predicated upon the view that the common thread is software engineering standards and practices, are presented in three sections:

(1)Software Systems Engineering - a critical success factor for any software project.
(2) Process Management and Control - what must be done in order to effectively scope, support and manage the development process itself.
(3) Project Planning and Management - standard fare, including estimation, risk management, and metrics.

Each of these sections contain papers that discuss aspects of the topic area, which include: Software Systems Engineering, Concept of Operations, Software Requirements Specification, Software User Documentation, Software Verification and Validation, Software Life Cycle Process Management, Software Process Improvement, Software Reviews, Software Configuration Management, Software Quality Assurance, Maintenance, Software Engineering Project Management, Software Cost and Schedule, Software Risk Management and Software Metrics.

Personally I completely agree with the book's approach (standards and processes are critical to successful development projects). However, even if taken as individual papers, each chapter presents excellent advice and insights that will benefit not only project managers, but all members of a development team. If you do agree with me that the overall approach is valid you will also find " SWEBOK: Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge" by Alain Abran(ISBN 0769510000) will complement this book by providing more foundation material about key areas of the software engineering process.

Project Skills
I am just starting out as a project manager of systems implementations so and keen to learn as much as I can on the subject. A friend of mine recommended Project Skills by Sam Elbeik and Mark Thomas. So I got it out of the library to have a read.

It is an excellent book! It is so good I have now ordered 2 copies (one for the friend who recommended it and myself) [...]. It will take a prominent place in my bookshelf for reference and I'm sure I will be using on a regular basis.

It has practical, real-world steps to managing projects such as: defining the project, planning, team building, leading, motivating team members, control, communication and review. There are plenty of hints to help you to become a good project manager. Not only in managing the project itself but also about the people involved in the project. What personality type they might be and how to handle them. This is an important part of project management.

It also has some very helpful and usable templates to use for each stage of the project, such as terms of reference, project plan, etc - I will be using these!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone starting out or needs a refresher on project management skills. I can’t wait to have a copy for myself!

An espionage sabatage attempt on the Manhaten project of ww2
The Manhatten Project and the development of the atomic bomb is at risk when Germany's best agent is sent to find out what the project is. Unknown to the agent, however, he is being set up to be caught or killed by the Americans but through intellegence and perserverence he still manages to evade the CIC's best attempts to capture him. Mark Elder has spun a fast paced story here of the highest caliber and should be commended for his excellent writing. The Promethius Operation is one of his best novels and deserves much more recognition than it has recieved as do all his novels. This novel is a real page turner.

Easy to read...
Mark Homan is my teacher so I'm a little biased. His book is very straight-forward, easy to read, and funny. It is definitely a must-read if you are going into the Social Services field. A lot of what Mark talks about in his books are common sense, but they are things that people don't generally spend a lot of time thinking about. Mark uses his 25+ years of experience to give us a lot of valuable advise.
