still relevant in many ways
Although this is a dated volume that deserves a publisher's reprint with the author's update, Satin comes quite far here from where he started with his prior book "New Age Politics". Satin has a real eye for what makes thhe culture and polity tick -- and he uses that sixth sense to get at what ails our collective governance of ourselves and each other. By taking an apporach which gets beyond left and right and which "creates new options", and by focusing on what works in the real world (using real life examples of politcal and social action that is often unnoticed but still effective) Satin does us all a great service here. He helps to highlight what's been missing from the political scense for so long, and then lays out contcrete remedies. Good swtuff.

New Testament Explorer
Published in Hardcover by Word Publishing (September, 1999)
Authors: Mark Bailey and Tom Constable
Amazon base price: $29.97
Average review score:

Following the Map
New Testament Explorer does an excellent job of mapping out the arguments of all the New Testament books. The sections which survey each book's contents are considerably more detailed than most survey books. However, the outlines are much more brief and general in comparison to the detail of the surveys. Some outlines are so general, they do not seem capture the distinctives of the Bible book. Also, the book deals very lightly with introductory matters (authorship, date, historical and cultural background). So if your desire a expedition through the content of the New Testament books themselves, New Testament Explorer is a wonderful guide. Just don't expect many extra excursions.

Norby the Mixed Up Robot

The first in The Norby series for juveniles.
This is the first volume in a series of short science fiction novels for young teenagers about a 14-year-old Space Academy cadet, Jeff Wells, and his unusual robot, Norby. Norby has skills that other robots lack, apparently due to the incorporation of alien parts in his construction. In this first book of the series, Jeff and Norby foil a plot of a villian to take over the Solar System. Norby discovers he has "anti-gravity" capabilities as well as the ability to travel through "hyperspace" and great distances. [Isaac Asimov, in another book, apologizes for using antigravity in this series: he felt that it represented poor science.] The second book in the series is "Norby's Other Secret," published in 1984. These two books were latered reissued as "The Norby Chronicles."

A good biography about O.J. Simpson
After reading this book, I know more about O.J.'s childhood and career before the infamous murders occured. It is very informative about his days as a football star and an actor. However, I was expecting more about O.J.'s relationship with Nicole. I also did not like the way the book ended. It left you wondering whether or not O.J. is guilty. I really recommend this book if you want to know about O.J. and his rise to fame. I recommend "Raging Heart" by Sheila Weller for an intimate look at the relationship between O.J. and Nicole. Overall, it was a good book.

Obeying Orders: Atrocity, Military Discipline & the Law of War
Published in Hardcover by Transaction Pub (June, 1999)
Author: Mark J. Osiel
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $20.07
Average review score:

Proposes increased prosecution for Law of War violations
In this book, Mr. Osiel contends that the military should be more proactive in prosecuting soldiers for violations of the law of warfare. Osiel contends that current policy generally leads to litigation only in cases of atrocity. To his credit, the author recognizes the complexities of the modern battlefield and the "real-world" impact of imposing new or thicker layers of control within the chaos that is war. He also recognizes the complexities that peace-keeping and peace-making operations pose for soldiers and leaders at all levels. Professional soldiers will find some of his example cases distracting, as they are clear violations of the law without imposing his higher standard to the situation. This book should be recommended reading for all Judge Advocate General officers and field-grade commanders that are participating in combined (international) operations. This book should generate some good discussion among professional officers as they digest his proposals for increased responsibility at all levels of the command structure. Any instructor involved in teaching ethics, leadership, or the Law of War will also find this work helpful.

A good source by a difficult path
Very detailed and sometimes boring contents.Question & answer format makes it more difficult to pick up key subjects.May be a good source for everyone but not for beginners.Strong references but lost in details. Many essential topics are absent. It can be a good test taken after a classic review...

fiction,but true
'Point Man' writes from experience. Although this is 'fiction', he has 'been there, done that' and knows what he's talking about. Might be a little confusing, but so is combat, esp. close quarters combat! There are many authors who claim to write 'true' books, but how many do you know who write 'fiction' that's from REAL EXPERIENCE? Good reading...ENJOY! Also, check out his Non-Fiction books! "Point Man" & "Walking Point" to read the true stories!

Useful, but not for beginners.
I bought this book in order to learn XML and how Oracle implemented it. This book assumes you know XML and Java very well, and glosses over many details. There is no reference for the myriad functions used in the examples so you really have to look elsewhere, like Metalink. I still don't know what book covers the details left out of this one! I will buy it when I find it.

I must own 8 or 10 Oracle Press books . . .

Black and white text books can cure insomnia
I had this book for a US - East Asian affairs class at my local community college. It was a decent text book and contains tons of information about Asian history and the emergence of Asian nations as strongpoints in the Pacific.

Each page of the book is separated into two columns which means that you have to read each page twice. Also, the whole book including all the pictures is in black and white. When reading about the extensive Chinese dynasties, these combined factors can make the casual reader very drowsy.

Some sleeping dogs are better left lyiing
The editors have done a very good job unearthing literature with content of some interest to gay men from centuries past, but reading a lot of this stuff confirms the notion that much writing goes out of print (if it was ever in it) for a good reason: it was no good in the first place! Nearly everything worth reading from the point of view of real literary value, contemporary interest, or entertainment in this book (roughly, 20% of its content) is in fact still in print anyway, and the rest can surely only be of interest to serious students of gay literature. On a more positive note, the editors' introductions to the various pieces are erudite and a pleasure to read.
