Introduction to Sport Psychology Made Easy
Doing Sport Psychology is edited by Mark B. Anderson who has worked with athletes for many years in both Australia and the United States. He is the first and current editor of the Professional Practice section of the international journal The Sport Psychologist. Hence he has a sound practical working knowledge of applied sport psychology. The authors of the book are well respected in the field of sport psychology and the book provides a fantastic opportunity for readers to sample their practical style rather than simply reading chapters on theory and principles. It is invaluable to read about what has and has not worked for other practitioners. The chapters provide learning experiences, which can only be of benefit to readers.

Doing Sport Psychology aimed to focus on the process of delivering sport psychology services to athletes and performers. It covers applied issues such as the planning of and note taking for initial and subsequent psychology sessions, the implementation of skills such as relaxation, self-talk, imagery, goal setting, and addresses problematic issues such as depression, suicide, eating disorders, injury, career transitions, and grief. Furthermore the book outlines supervision arrangements, internship experiences, and working as a sport psychologist at the Olympics. Additionally there are chapters on applying the skills learned in the sport psychology domain to coaching and performing artists.

In every chapter the authors identify the relevant and prevalent issues for the topic and provide insight into their experiences working with the issue. This process is complimented by the inclusion of dialogue from their own case studies. These case studies provide a reference that very few, if any, sport psychology texts provide. Anderson (2000) has used Doing Psychotherapy by Basch (1980) as model in developing this book and it has proven to be successful. The book is extremely easy to read. The language used is clear and concise. The authors write in a relaxed and natural way that makes reading enjoyable.

The main strength of this book is its practical nature. This is vital for psychology students who are trying to specialise in the sporting domain. Moreover it can provide refreshing advice for psychologists currently practicing in the field. The emphasis on dialogue promotes the importance of the working relationship between psychologist and coach, athlete or allied health practitioner.

Throughout the book Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was discussed and utilised, however it is important to point out that other therapeutic techniques such as a psychodynamic approach were advanced. The application of alternative approaches is often an overlooked concept from postgraduate training in sport psychology and thus their inclusion promotes a multidimensional field. Despite the clear importance of the dialogue and the brief mention of alternative therapeutic approaches, the quantity of dialogue may be excessive at times, especially as it does not provide examples of therapist-client interactions that are unique to the sporting domain. The dialogue would be enhanced by reducing the superfluous exchanges and demonstrating a variety of therapeutic approaches.

The differentiation between sport psychology and other branches of psychology was beneficial in clarifying the unique circumstances that sport psychologists can experience during their work. Despite the apparent differences the book still emphasises the importance of adhering to ethical standards. These words of advice are very useful for students who are undertaking their internship or externship placements. A particular aspect of the book which was simple but had practical relevance to sport psychology was the concept of asking yourself why a particular method or intervention was chosen. Furthermore self-monitoring was another concept that is a particularly helpful tool in the practice of sport psychology.

Doing Sport Psychology is aimed at students, supervisors, and practitioners of sport psychology. This book is valuable to students undertaking specialised education and training in sport psychology. In particular, the book is useful for those students who have limited practical experience. There are examples throughout of how service delivery is accomplished. Doing Sport Psychology is a valuable resource for each of the aforementioned target groups.

"Doing Sport Psychology" Opens the Door to Sport Psych
"It is the first book to accurately depict the complex and dynamic work of everyday sport psychology. . . The most impressive quality of this book is that it focuses on the process of sport psychology interventions," wrote Shane Murphy in the Afterword of this excellent text. This is a ground-breaking book that lets the reader in on sessions conducted by a variety of sport psychology practitioners. I found myself captivated by the discussions of professional and substantive issues raised by the twenty-two contributors and their editor. The chapters gave me ideas and caused me to reflect on my own work with clients. The attention given to the specific actions and choices we make with clients was intriguing. In a few instances, authors referred to the notion of "biblio-therapy," or giving a book to a client as part of the intervention. Doing Sport Psychology could be viewed as "biblio-supervision" or as an essential learning tool for developing practitioners. Remarks on the back cover state that this is the book that Andersen wishes he had when he was in graduate school, and I echo his sentiments and recommend this volume highly for graduate applied sport psychology courses. As Murphy suggested, it is somewhat surprising that our field has not had a book of this kind until now. It is a much welcomed addition to the literature. A great strength of the writing is that authors showed their human side, their mistakes, and vulnerabilities. For graduate students and new practitioners, this is a rich learning ground. Although the authors varied in the extent to which they revealed themselves, the overall work takes much of the mystery out of what sport psychologists do. Many of us got involved in sport psychology out of an interest in people and the processes they go through in sports. The sundry case studies give us a window into individuals' dynamics and the work being done. "Doing Sport Psychology is about what practitioners have found to be helpful out there on the playing fields, and it focuses more on the effectiveness side of the ongoing debate in treatment outcome research" (p. xv)

A valued book for my favorite film
After 20 odd years of studying this film over and over (at least 25 viewings), I was glad to find Sanderson's book filled with pictures and interesting commentary, although he seems to skirt over the film's considerable suggestion of Jungian concepts about synchronicity, etc. He does make a firm case for DON'T LOOK NOW being one of the best films about grief and grieving ever made, and, moreover, uncovers its gothic text intelligently. Not highbrow in any sense, just thorough and smart, and good reading to boot! It's also great to have a list of the opening and ending sequences in this shot by shot format, since there's never been a montage anything like Roeg's jewel created since 1973.

A Haunting Film...A Fascinating Book
This is a great book for anyone who loves the film, "Don't Look Now," by Nicolas Roeg. The film itself is an extraordinary and powerful thriller and love story--anyone who has seen it can never forget its beginning and ending scenes, or its beautiful sex scene between Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland. The movie is filled with hidden secrets and little details which this book does a good job of pointing out. It also goes through, shot-by-shot, the opening and climactic scenes. A very interesting book. It also helps that the author writes on a personal, intimate level without being stuffy or confusing.

Good Pictures, but no really early users
This book is really GREAT, but there is hardly any mention of the first users of the airplane, especially the DC-8 section. the rest of the book is very good.

Not just a hobbyist book
Given the book's size and colorful presentation, at first glance it appears to be a benign coffee table book. But it provides a clear and detailed explanation of the rise and fall of Douglas Aircraft. Guy Norris' enthusiasm for the saga of aviation is infectious. Worthy as both a technical and social history.

A very good overview
I read this book shortly after my son was born with Down Syndrome. It was not as "mushy" as the Stray-Gunderson book. It has wonderful information on the joys of raising a child with down syndrome, while giving very specific information on potential health problems and what to be sure your pediatrician is aware of. I liked the fact that he recomends that the parent is the child's biggest advocate, and that we prepare ourselves for that role.

Positive and informative
Written by an Australian pediatrician, this book is both positive and informative. The book presents a great deal of material but does it in an clear and accessible style . The author is extremely optimistic about the future of people with Down syndrome and this optimism shows in his writing. The material covered includes early childhood development, school, adolescence, and adulthood. Laws in the US, UK, and Australia are covered.

Skimmed it once, then read it cover to cover. Informative.
The first time I picked up this book I just skimmed it. It was so interesting that I then read it from cover to cover. Informative, interesting. The author covered the subject very well. I would read parts of it again and again.

Absolutey superb work of nonfiction.
This book should be required reading for the members of the human race. An absolutey enthralling account of how man's fixation with his sexuality has helped shaped society and history. Strage did an outstanding job in his research, and his analysis is nothing less than brilliant. I guarantee that you will never be able to look at the world in the same way again.

Economics
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall Trade (June, 1999)
Authors: John Sloman and Mark Sutcliffe
Amazon base price: $40.50
Collectible price: $29.95
Average review score:

Very good.
As far as introductory economics texts go, Sloman is about as difficult as it gets. Nonetheless, it is very readable, and explains (relatively) difficult concepts in a straight-forward, lucid style. Also, it is an ideal text for those students planning to study economics further because within each chapter it has a 'basic' treatment of the issues at hand, and then follows it with an optional 'intermediate' treatment that builds upon the former one. This is an excellent idea in that it gives students the option of advancing far more quickly and easily than by using a 'standard' textbook approach. Further, the content is 'more intelligent' than in your average text - e.g., its chapter on general equilibrium contains material on Pareto Optimality (often left out of texts), and it has an entire chapter devoted alternative theories of the firm (always left out of texts).

In short, this text will challenge first year university students, but will also reward them with greater insight than will the average introductory textbook.

Excellent Economics Text
I concur with the assessment of Mr. Mariyani-Squire. This is an excellent text. Although quite challenging in places for an introductory text, the author organizes material in such a way that students can cover the basics and then extend/apply them. For students who want to go beyond the basics, the book provides additional material and illustrations. Particularly helpful are: the many sections throughout the book where concepts are listed in summary form; and the definitions of key terms printed at the bottom of each page. I use this in an International Baccalaureate (Higher Level) economics class with IB Diploma high school seniors in their second year of economics study. Since the book is written primarily for students in the U.K., it allows U.S. students to apply concepts using examples beyond their own country.

EDGY LITTLE THRILLER
Mark Olshaker's "The Edge" is a gripping, tension-filled whodunit with lots of graphic violence and a feisty heroine named Sandy Mansfield. However, Sandy isn't quite so smart when she finds herself falling for the prime suspect: Dr. Nicholas Ramsey, charming, debonair and perhaps a hard-hearted killer. Ramsey also had a brother who was a demented serial killer, and it is his motifs that a new killer is using in homage to the crazed Neville Ramsey.
There are some major inconsistencies, however, that keep it from being a true "5" thriller. For instance, letters are being sent to Mansfield after each of the killings, urging her on. However, when it seems as if one of the killings is a copycat crime, she still gets a letter with the main killer taking credit. A big plot faus pax in an otherwise tightly written medical thriller. The ending is rather overblown, but it works okay, and I guess one can't help but wish Ms. Mansfield well.
The book moves well and the dialogue is terse and believable.

RECOMMENDED.

The Edge is absolutely an unforgettable thrill.
The details of the murders, the cunning connections the chemistry between a suspect and detective Sandy Mansfield are just a few things that give the story its course and non-stop action. The use of medical science as portrayed in this story is hard to put away from the mind. The force that pushes the murderer to butcher and "play with the body" lasts mind provoking. The end leaves the reader stunned yet fully satisfied with each detail and concept given. Olashaker contribution to the story is fully present in each aspect of The Edge. It is a non-stop thrilling, unforgettable experience for a human mind.

Excellent overall information for all levels of experience.
The newest book by the same authors is actually even better. Both are excellent in the approach to the subject, advice given, and readability. I have learned a great deal from each of these books...as a student of elk hunting must always strive to do!

An excellent source book for beginners and veterans alike.
This book is easy reading and packed full on tips. The authors reveal tips about elk that unless yu have spent years among them in the wild you will never learn. I have bowhunted for 6 years. This was only my 2nd year bowhunting elk. I read the book to give me a little edge and it worked. I won't be one of the people these guys refer to that go years without getting an elk. The tips in this book and all of the information about elk refreshes your memory about what you CAN do to improve your chances of having a successful season. I plan to read it again next year before I head out after these elusive and majestic mammals. Get it, read it, try it. Good luck!

helpful tool for devotion and discipleship
Out of his popular courses on the life of Christ comes another book designed for the student and disciple. 'Encounters with Christ' is a book about those who encounted Christ in the New Testament, but more so about how we can take these encounters and use them to gain a deeper commitment to God. There are symbols throughout the text that cross reference this book with the two volume work 'The Chronological Life of Christ' , also by Mark Moore, so that the reader can pursue further study of any particular encounter. The format allows this book to act as an excellent tool for personal study, classroom study, and personal devotion. It's full of personal illustrations and keen insight. I recommend this book to anyone who takes the call of discipleship to the Lord Jesus Christ seriously.

The only negative comment about this book is that the font seems a little awkward while reading and may appear to be cheaply printed.

The best way to give devotion
this book has awsome segements about ways to understand christ. It is like opening a world that you won't understand until you read it. I understand who christ is and how he works and loves us all!! This is the best book for devotional time. Not long reads, but the readings are full of insirational feelings and thoughts!

Encyclopedia of the Mexican American War

Encyclopedia of the Mexican-American War
This handsome encyclopedia is an excellent and useful reference book, its publication nicely timed for the sesquicentennial of the end of the war and a renewed interest in that conflict. Introduced by a short summary of the war and a resume of its causes, the alphabetically arranged entries range from Abolitionists to Zozaya, MarĂa Josefa. The almost 500 topics covered include: battles and skirmishes, military leaders, Indian participants, the role of women, medical practices, casualties, desertion, navies, Manifest Destiny, political figures, pro and con sentiments about the war, armistices, and peace treaty negotiations. All of the entries, many of them illustrated, are followed by suggestions for further reading. Some of the entries contain colorful, direct quotes from eyewitness accounts. In addition to maps, a chronology of the war, and a comprehensive index, this book has an extensive bibliography with references in Spanish as well as English. Besides books and articles, the bibliography lists a number of pertinent dissertations. Buy a copy for yourself and recommed it to your local library.

It is About Time!
IT IS ABOUT TIME! someone took the time and effort to write an encyclopedia on the Mexican War. As a student of the Mexican War over the last eight years, I have often wondered when a qualified scholar and writer would "fill the niche" so sorely needed in this community. Mark Crawford deserves the credit and praise of all students and "buffs" of the topic. I wish he would have produced this marvelous volume years ago which would have saved me weeks of work in graduate school. I found it to be a perfect blend, a middle ground between Col Mark Boatner's in-depth classic, Civil War Dictionary and Patrcia Fausts' artist Historical Times Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Civil War. It is balanced, thorough and well-written with just the right amount of detail but not getting bogged down in the details. The only major criticism I have of this outstanding research tool, it is very lacking in maps! There are only three maps that does not come close to illustrate the scope and breath of a very broad and comprehensive conflict. The period photos and artwork perfectly captivate and enhance the very readable narrative. I highly recommend this great work to all students of the profession of arms, especially Mexican War types like me.
